MEDITERRANEAN CULINARY VOYAGE WITH CELEBRIT Y CHEF, UMBERTO MENGHIM O N T E C A R LO - S A I N T T R O P E Z - MA R S E I L L E - S E T E - A LU C I D I A - C A S T E L LO N - B A R C E LO N A

September 16 −23, 2016 aboard the luxurious Silver Cloud

MONTE CARLO, MONACOIn 1297 the Grimaldi family seized this fortified town and, except for a short break under Napoléon, they have ruled here ever since. The Principality of Monaco covers 473 acres; it would fit comfortably inside New York’s Central Park while its 5,000 citizens would fill only a small fraction of the seats in Yankee Stadium. The Grimaldis made money from gambling and attracted a well-heeled, monied crowd, but the whole world watched as Hollywood princess Grace Kelly wed Prince Rainier ruler of Monaco to put this place on the map.

SAINT TROPEZ, FRANCEBrigitte Bardot kick-started the rush in the early 1960s, and she was followed by the likes of Liz Taylor and Sophia Loren. People still flock to St-Tropez for the sun, the sea, and, the celebrities. The new generation includes Elton, Barbra, Oprah, Jack, and Uma, though they stay hidden in villas, and the people you’ll see on the streets are mere mortals, lots of them, many intent on displaying the best-and often the most-of their youth, beauty, and wealth. Still, if you take an early-morning stroll around the pretty port or down the narrow medieval streets with their candied-almond hues, you’ll see just how charming St-Tropez can be.

MARSEILLE, FRANCEMarseille may sometimes be given a wide berth by travelers in search of a Provençal idyll, but it’s their loss. Miss it, and you miss one of the most vibrant, exciting cities in France. With its cubist jumbles of white stone rising up over a picture-book seaport, bathed in light of blinding clarity and crowned by larger-than-life neo-Byzantine churches, the city’s neighborhoods teem with multiethnic life. Its souk-like African markets reek deliciously of spices and coffees, and its labyrinthine Vieille Ville is painted in broad strokes of saffron, cinnamon, and robin’s-egg blue.

SETE, FRANCESete is a large, cosmopolitan town between the Etang de Thau and the Mediterranean, referred to by the locals as the Venice of Languedoc. It is the largest fishing port of the French Mediterranean coast. The town falls into two parts - the low town, with the port, and criss-crossed by canals and bridges; and the high town on Mont St Clair. In the low town, the harbour front houses, canals and the fishing activity itself are the main attractions, along with the lovely ‘village within a town’ - the Pointe

Courte sector. Along the edges of the canals are attractive buildings housing shops, restaurants and bars and strolling along these streets edged with small boats is a real pleasure.

ALCUDIA, MALLORCA, SPAINSet on Majorca’s north-east coast, Alcudia has two parts. Inland there’s a historic old town, where shops and cafés fill the streets behind the 14th-century city walls. And then there’s the coast. Here, the long stretch comes with hotels, bars and a marina backed by restaurants – plus 7 kilometres of sand. A dramatic way to start a tour of Alcudia’s old town is through one of the 2 gates built after the conquest of the island by King Jaime I of Spain.

CASTELLON, SPAINCastellón de la Plana is a historical city dating back to medieval times (13th century). It is situated between the sea and the ‘Desert de les Palmas’ mountain range and has a population of 140,000. The capital of the county of La Plana, situated on the Costa del Azahar, has countless attractions. Many squares in which to enjoy its gentle temperatures, gardens with orange trees and a walk leading down to the sea fill this city of medieval origin. Aristocratic houses and beautiful churches draw you to the eastern city, a good starting point for getting to know part of the Spanish coast.

BARCELONA, SPAINCapital of Catalonia, 2,000-year-old Barcelona commanded a vast Mediterranean empire when Madrid was still a dusty Moorish outpost on the Spanish steppe. Relegated to second-city status only in 1561, Barcelona has long rivaled and often surpassed Madrid’s supremacy. Catalans jealously guard their language and their culture. Barcelona has long had a frenetically active cultural life. It was the home of architect Antoni Gaudí, and the painters Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Pablo Picasso also spent his formative years in Barcelona. Native musicians include cellist Pablo (Pau, in Catalan) Casals, opera singers Montserrat Caballé and José (Josep) Carreras, and early-music master Jordi Savall.
