INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER ONE - Who Are You as a Leader?

Welcome to the Brave Leadership Book Study Guide! You are welcome to use this free resource however you wish—as a Twitter chat, on Google Hangouts, in-person with your book group, or simply as a means to delve deeper into the conversation.  However you decide to engage in this conversation, may it lead you to your best, most authentic, and powerful—BRAVE—self!  - Kimberly Davis

- DANIEL H. PINK, author of Drive and To Sell is Human

When Kimberly was a kid, she was fearless. She put herself out there for anything she wanted without giving it a second thought. When in your life have you felt fearless and how did that show up?   Is there a specific time in your life when you felt like you “misplaced your brave?” If so, when was it and what did that feel like? Do you have a “safe place for self-expression” and, if so, what is it? How has that made a difference for you? How could you create this kind of safe space for others? What are some of the ways you think vulnerability plays out in the workplace?  Think of a time when vulnerability has kept you from owning your brave at work. What was the price you paid?  Why did you decide to join this book study, what do you hope to gain from it, and how can we support you?

If you were to define who you are as a leader in less than 280 characters, what would you say?  Kimberly defines a leader as someone people WANT to follow, not HAVE to follow. How would you define what it means to be a leader?

Do you currently think of yourself as a leader? Why or why not?  How has your life outside work influence your leadership?

A common nickname for today’s work environment is the “VUCA environment” – volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. What big changes have you seen in your workplace over the last 10 years?

How have expectations changed around what is being asked of you in the past 10 years? Have you seen a change in leadership style in the past 10 years? If so, what changes are you seeing? If not, why do you think that is? I define brave as being your most confident, authentic, and powerful self. How do you define brave?   What do you see as the link between retention of top talent and leadership style?

When you think of the whirlwind that is today’s work environment, how are people FEELING and how do you see those feelings manifesting in terms of behavior (in your meetings, in your one-on-ones, in your conversations, on your calls, etc.)?  What’s your point of view about emotions in the workplace?  What is the price organizations pay for not addressing the real emotions in the workplace? What does “game-playing” looking like in your organization/work, and what’s the cost? Do you feel like you can be yourself at work? Why or why not? Is there a price you pay either way?

If you could experience full #engagement, self-acceptance, and ownership of your future, how would that change things for you?

How do you feel about your responsibility to model a new kind of #leadership for tomorrow’s leaders and why do you feel that way?

Think of someone who has had a positive influence on your life. What was it about this person that had the biggest impact and/or what did they do that made such a difference?  How do you show up differently when you WANT to do something vs. when you HAVE to do something?  Think of a time when someone else’s emotions hijacked the success of your How does “carrot-and-stick” motivation show up in your workplace? How well is it working and why?  Do you think the leaders in your workplace “harness the want” of the people they need to lead and influence? What is your evidence one way or the other?  [if you prefer to answer this question more broadly – applying it to your community, country, etc – that is totally okay]

CHAPTER FOUR: Redefining Leadership

CHAPTER FIVE: Unlocking the Want

Have you ever been tricked into believing there was a “formula for success” and if so, did you get the results you were promised? If not, why not?  How do you define and determine authenticity?  What do you think is the difference between WANT to and HAVE to? Explain your thinking.  Think of a situation in which you did NOT unlock the “want” of the person you were hoping to lead or influence. Why do you think that happened?  Think of a relationship in your life that is not going as well as you would like. What do you think they need from you to experience you as authentic?  What questions might you ask yourself, before entering a situation, to better understand the needs of the other person/people in the situation?

Can you identify some of your lines that have become barriers to you being and bringing your best, most authentic, and powerful - brave – self? What are they?  How has your #mindset shaped your bravery?  What is the price you’ve paid for focusing on your lines?  It’s so difficult to see our own lines, but often easy to see when others are up against their own. Why do you think that is?  What are the signs that you might be bumping into your lines? How do you typically feel and how do you act when you’re up against them? What would be possible for you if you could push through your own lines?

CHAPTER SIX: Disappearing Genius

CHAPTER SEVEN: What Do You See?

What are some of the “lines” you’ve told yourself that have not served you?  What is the price you pay (or have paid) for holding on to “lines” that don’t serve you?  What ideas do you have about how to investigate the truth in your “lines?”  If brave is being and bringing your best, most authentic and powerful self to the situations you face, how do your “lines” inhibit your brave?  What can you do, moving forward, to identify your “lines” before they sabotage your brave?  How can you model “line-awareness” for others?

What boxes have you fit yourself in that cannot contain you? Think of someone you’ve made a negative decision about and have put them in a box. Maybe that box is “mean,” “lazy,” “doesn’t care,” “cold,” (etc.). How can you expand your thinking about this person?  What would change in your relationship with this person, were you to take them out of the box you put them in?  What boxes do you think others have put YOU in that you feel were a poor representation of who you truly are? What is/was the result?  What would be possible for you were you to break free of the boxes you put yourself in?  What actions can you take to expand the way you see yourself?
