Dear Friends,

Welcome to the historic Hilbert Circle Theatre as your Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra celebrates our second annual INfusion Music Fest! This week, the ISO continues the work we began last year in creating and celebrating meaningful connections between music and our environment. This is an imperative issue for our community to discuss, and we are grateful for the opportunity to once again highlight this important topic.

We are truly thankful for the many partner organizations which have come together in support of this festival. Our INfusion Talks participants include Earth Charter Indiana, Hoosier Environmental Council, Indiana Recycling Coalition, IndyGo, Indianapolis Power and Light, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, and Marian University. I also want to extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors who made INfusion Music Fest possible: The Margot L. and Robert S. Eccles Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation; the Efroymson Family Fund; and the Eli Lilly & Company Foundation.

From our inspiring and informative INfusion Talks to Mason Bates’ thought-provoking Liquid Interface and all of our other musical adventures this week, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the concerts and experiences we have planned for the festival. Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to seeing you in the concert hall again very soon! Sincerely,

Chief Executive Officer

JEFF ANGEL, Master of Ceremonies

Performance by Time for Three

Beyond SustainabilityDr. David Benson, Marian University

At its most basic, environmental sustainability could be thought of as having as much of a negative impact on the environment as can be sustained. Perhaps, rather than thinking about how to limit

our negative impact on the environment to the point where it is sustainable, we should think about how we can have a positive

impact. We can choose: what environment do we want to live in? One that is merely sustainable, or one that is desirable?

Time for Three – violinist Nick Kendall, violinist Charles Yang, and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer – is a group that defies any

traditional genre classification, happily and infectiously. With an uncommon mix of virtuosity and showmanship, the American trio performs music from Bach to Brahms and beyond, giving world-premieres by Pulitzer Prize-winners William Bolcom and Jennifer Higdon, as well as playing originals and their own arrangements from bluegrass and folk tunes to ingenious mash-ups of hits by the Beatles, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and more.

Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Paper Bird first emerged from the same environs that launched such outfits as Nathaniel

Rateliff and the Night Sweats and the Lumineers. The group has toured extensively throughout the U.S., sharing bills with the

aforementioned bands, as well as Daryl Hall & John Oates, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Shakey Graves.

On Paper Bird, the band collaborates with world renowned musician, singer and songwriter John Oates, who co produced the

album with Aikins’ fellow Canadian David Kalmusky. The album was recorded and mixed at Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville,

and for his part, Oates couldn’t be more delighted.

Over the course of more than a dozen years and six studio albums, Amos Lee has continued to evolve, develop, and challenge himself as a musician. With SPIRIT, he makes his biggest creative leap yet.

Most notably, for the first time, Lee acted as his own producer. While

his last two albums bore the stamp of strong producers—Joey Burns of Calexico on 2011’s Mission Bell (which debuted at Number

One on the Billboard 200, Amazon, iTunes charts, and spun off a hit single with “Windows are Rolled Down”) and Jay Joyce (Little

Big Town, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant) on 2013’s Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song—Lee finally felt ready to take over the helm.

“All you can ask for as an artist is the chance to create what you hear and feel inside of yourself,” he says. “The performances by everyone

gave me such a strong place to draw from, and being more connected to the arrangements made it easier and more fun to sing.

For my first time producing, I could not have been luckier—I was able to get into the heart of every single moment of this record.”
