Why Hogan Lovells

This sense of trust runs through the firm. There is a natural tendency to share knowledge, a desire to work collaboratively and a strong emphasis on building meaningful relationships with clients and each other. We are an international law firm that feels, to the people who work here, more like a community – one, most importantly, where you can always be yourself.

Clients appreciate the practical advice we offer. We bring emotional as well as legal intelligence to the issues and we apply business know-how that’s on a par with our technical expertise. World-class training and on-going development give all of our lawyers the confidence to do things differently. Then there’s the exceptional breadth of our practice areas, the in-depth industry knowledge our lawyers develop and the high quality of our people, across a wide geographical reach. It’s a distinctive approach that helps us give clients what they want even before they realise they want it.

There is a dynamic to our firm that makes us feel different. Everyone is here to change the game. Everyone pushes themselves and is pushed in return. Everyone works together to find smarter, bolder ways to solve problems that, in a global market, are increasingly complex.

Why H

“ Hogan Lovells knows that there is more to being a great lawyer than knowing the law. Here, it’s about building relationships and providing advice that is commercially savvy.”

Shaun Cook, Associate

A view from the top

As a lawyer, you spend many years learning your craft and becoming a trusted adviser to clients. A management role brings different challenges. You need to learn to take advice rather than give it – and to be the one making decisions.

Put simply, my goal is to create the best possible platform for our people to be successful and for our business to thrive. That isn’t straightforward. Technology, globalisation and shifting demographics are causing fundamental changes to how businesses, including law firms, operate. So I – along with a wonderful team of people from across the firm – work hard to look ahead and adapt our business so that we are fit for the future.

Here at Atlantic House, we’re changing the physical environment to foster collaboration and reflect the new ways people want to work. Last year we opened the Tech Hub, an open plan multi-practice space, which brings together lawyers with technology related expertise. We are now in the process of refurbishing our main building too.

But it’s not just about the physical environment. I passionately believe that an inclusive and diverse team will always deliver the best results for our clients. So this is something we actively promote at all levels, whether that’s through focused efforts to attract and retain candidates from under-represented groups or targeted actions to create more gender balance in our partnership.

Every day is different. The “to-do” list is never done. I get to have my finger on the pulse of our business and to celebrate the successes of some extremely talented people. It’s a great privilege and a huge responsibility.

Susan Bright is a self-confessed Hogan Lovells “lifer”. Having trained here in 1989, she qualified into our competition practice and, today, is Regional Managing Partner – UK and Africa.

Our outlook on the world

“ Citizenship brings us together across our global network to mobilise change and make a positive impact.”

Steve Immelt, CEO Hogan Lovells

It starts with being good citizensAt Hogan Lovells, exemplary citizenship is so much more than a box-ticking exercise. It’s an integral part of our culture and strategy. Our shared belief in the value of social responsibility is one of the bonds that unifies us as a global firm, and it benefits us every bit as much as the communities and individuals we reach out to.To that end, as part of our Global Citizenship Policy, we ask every single member of the firm at every office around the world to devote at least 25 hours per year to citizenship activities as part of their normal duties at the firm. Most people do more than this – collectively, in 2017, we dedicated 210,000+ hours to citizenship activities and 142,600+ hours to pro bono activities globally.

Putting the social in enterpriseAs part of your induction, we’ll introduce you to HL BaSE, our thriving social enterprise legal practice. HL BaSE offers legal advice to social enterprises, delivers training to junior lawyers on business and social impact issues, and works together with corporate clients to provide legal support to social enterprises. Through it, you’ll learn about the fundamentals of business and what drives clients’ big decisions. You’ll learn how to be more entrepreneurial so you can win more work, and you’ll discover how important the way we conduct ourselves is to the firm’s success.

Finding value in diversityAlso central to our success as a firm are the different perspectives our people bring. That’s why, through our comprehensive diversity strategy and the wide-ranging initiatives that have grown up around it, we do all we can to foster an inclusive culture. Our Global Diversity and Inclusion Committee, alongside 10 regional teams around the world, work hard to attract and retain the best talent while maintaining an environment in which everyone can realise their full potential and most importantly, be themselves.

The things some organisations do to meet their Corporate Social Responsibility targets or boost their reputation in the marketplace, we do simply because it’s good business.

14

An alumna’s perspective

I remember being struck during my interview at Hogan Lovells by how down to earth the partners were, and the way they put me at ease. International law firms can look the same on paper but the open culture was a big draw for me.

My final seat as a trainee was spent in the Employment team and I really enjoyed the variety of work coupled with the human dynamic. I qualified into the team in 2005 as an Associate and then, as a Senior Associate, I was given a lot of autonomy to advise on complex issues, manage interesting cases and to develop client relationships. There was also a very strong camaraderie within the team and amongst my trainee intake, which made it a genuinely fun place to work.

I undertook several client secondments (to ExxonMobil and to different divisions of Barclays Bank) but I wasn’t looking to move in-house until I was approached about a job at Burberry and the opportunity seemed too good to turn down. As an in-house lawyer, you need to immerse yourself in the business so it makes a huge difference if you have a genuine interest in the industry sector (and being a shopaholic, I definitely do).

I joined Burberry as their first employment lawyer in 2012 and I have grown a small team in the meantime, with the addition of employment lawyers in both London and New York. My role is global so I am responsible for the whole spectrum of issues that affect our 11,000 employees worldwide. The work is varied, fast-paced and challenging. My wardrobe has also benefited from the move, and I have been lucky enough to attend the runway show, which was an incredible experience.

Although I no longer work at Hogan Lovells, I still feel very connected to the firm. Many of my closest friendships were formed there and I am regularly in touch with current and former members. When I want to bounce an idea off someone, they are usually my first port of call and that network is invaluable.

Why H

ogan Lovells

A personal path to a career in law

I left university in the summer of 2012 and started working in London in a variety of jobs including working for the NHS and in recruitment for (of all things) the legal sector. I really enjoyed the work and learned many skills that have stood me in good stead since I started at the firm, from simple things like how to work in an office environment to more important skills like client management and hitting deadlines. I knew these weren’t permanent jobs but the opportunity to experience other areas of work was good preparation before starting my career at Hogan Lovells.

I did the winter vacation scheme in 2012. For someone like me – from a non-law background – it was a great opportunity to come into the firm and get an insight into what a City lawyer does and the types of work that Hogan Lovells offers.

During my training contract I had the chance to do seats in Finance, Real Estate and Litigation before finishing with a secondment to our Washington DC office. Being able to experience all these different fields and getting to go abroad has really given me a broad understanding of the law in general, and since qualifying I have been working on building up a depth of knowledge in my practice area specifically.

When you’re starting out with the firm, I think it’s important to say yes to every opportunity that comes your way: not just in terms of the work you get involved with but things like pro bono projects and sports teams too. Taking on as much as you can gives you the best chance of finding out what you’re really passionate about, before you qualify and begin your road towards specialisation.

My focus for the next few years is to become as strong a technical lawyer as I can be, whilst also improving my client relationship and business development skills. That’s something the firm emphasises early on in your training contract. And it continues throughout your time as an associate, with training sessions and development programmes, all designed to help you become a more rounded and successful lawyer.

Shaun Cook Associate, Business Restructuring and Insolvency team

Studying Philosophy and Natural Sciences at Cambridge may not seem the obvious launch pad for a legal career; however, for Shaun Cook, it led to an even steeper learning curve, and an Associate role in our Business Restructuring and Insolvency team.

“ You never know what area of the law will interest you most.”

Vacation schemes and more

The choices you make now will set the pace and direction of your career. You should feel confident that the people, the work and the culture will bring out the best in you. Every encounter with a potential employer can lead to a fresh insight. Every experience can sharpen the skills you need to get your hands on the kind of future you’re aiming for.

Although we’ve worked hard to pack this brochure full of useful information, we have to admit nothing beats the real thing. That’s why we’ve created so many ways to meet us and do the kind of work we do yourself. It’s hard to make an informed decision about which firms to apply for if you haven’t experienced them first-hand.

To be a Global Game-changer, first you need to be comfortable with the path you’ve chosen and the environment you’re in. You’ll be spending a big chunk of your life in your new firm, so it pays to make sure that it’s the right one for you.

Insight events

Our two-day insight events are for first-year students of all disciplines. We run two of these over Easter and the summer at our offices in the City. Each is packed with tailored workshops, work shadowing, presentations and opportunities to find out about life at a global law firm. Come along to one and, even though you’re only with us for a short space of time, you’ll leave with a better understanding of our culture and the day-to-day work of a trainee solicitor. You’ll also get good advice on how to make your application for a vacation scheme or training contract stand out.

“The insight day I attended was my first substantial contact with the firm and set the tone for my expectations, both from Hogan Lovells and other law firms. It gave me an insight into what Hogan Lovells was like – from the types of work to the sorts of people working there. This means that when applying for a vacation scheme here, you already have a good idea of what you are signing up for and you can show this in your application. I found the day to be a valuable experience including presentations, practical workshops, a tour of the office, as well as contact with trainees, lawyers and graduate recruitment. It was a great first experience of what a career in a City law firm could look like.”

Katharine Crossman, Trainee

Spend time in our office. Gain insights galore. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better return for such a small investment of time.

20

“ Enjoy your time at the firm and soak everything up. Say yes to opportunities and get involved in as much as you can.”

Emily Gidda, Trainee

This is a chance to become an extension of our firm. You’ll develop a deep understanding of our graduate offering and help us plan, promote and run our 2019/20 marketing events on your campus. Helping other students find out about our opportunities is a great way to create opportunities for yourself. You’ll build your CV, your network and your understanding of how a global law firm works. You’ll also have every opportunity to impress us with your personality, drive and creativity. If you decide to apply for a vacation scheme or a training contract, you’ll gain first-hand knowledge to help you.

Interviews take place during the spring of your first year so you’re ready to start promoting us in your second year. We’ll give you thorough training. The pay – £600 – is pretty good too.

“ I’m so glad that I applied to be a Hogan Lovells campus ambassador during my first year of university as it gave me a real head start when it came to vacation scheme and training contract applications. It was also a fantastic way to meet with the firm’s trainees, lawyers and partners at events such as evening receptions and training days. I was allocated a trainee mentor during the year, which gave me the chance to ask lots of questions and gain an insight into what life is like as a trainee. I worked closely with the graduate recruitment team. But the truth is everyone I met was extremely welcoming and that was instrumental in me choosing Hogan Lovells as the firm I wanted to join.”

Eleanor Martin, Trainee and previous Campus Ambassador

Vacation schemes

Working alongside partners, associates and trainees, you’ll support major client assignments in key practice areas like Corporate, Finance and Litigation. You’ll draft documents, go to meetings, do legal research and, where possible, attend court. It’s hands-on learning that’s reinforced by tailored workshops, discussions, case studies, social events and more. The experience you will gain is invaluable.

Our schemes last for up to three weeks. We carefully tailor them for students at different stages of their career planning. Check out which one is right for you.

These schemes are the perfect launch pad for a legal career. Around three quarters of the trainee solicitors who join us each year have taken part in one.

25

Vacation schemes and m

“ Be confident, curious and interested – enthusiasm goes a long way. Most importantly, be yourself. Your individuality is valued here. It’s part of what you offer as a future lawyer.”

“ Think of other vacation scheme students as colleagues, not competition. You’re on the vacation scheme, so the firm knows you’re bright. This is your chance to show you’re also a team player.”

Making the most of your scheme26

“Throw yourself in at the deep end” was a popular suggestion. Trainees thought taking on tasks “even if they terrify you” was the best way to show what you’re made of and how fast you can pick things up. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they might be silly” was also up there. Everyone appreciates you’re there to learn, and asking lots of questions shows you’re curious and engaged. Just be sure to listen and take on board the answers that come back.

Vacation schemes are also your chance to talk to as many people at the firm as you can. That means going to any social events we put on for you. These are great places to chat informally to partners, associates and trainees and to get to know other vacation scheme students who could well be your colleagues a few years down the line.Yes, these schemes can be daunting. But as one of our trainees put it, “The firm thinks you’re good enough to be here. You’ve done the preparation. Now relax and enjoy yourself.”

“ Ask questions, listen to those with experience and make notes. Oh, and remember names.”

“ Don’t be scared to get in over your head. Yes it’s nerve-racking but everyone will go out of their way to help. And it’s a great way to stand out.”

Let’s say the first morning of your scheme has arrived. You’re about to meet the people you could be working with long-term. Maybe get your hands on high-profile work for some big-name clients. So how are you going to make every minute count? We asked some of our trainees for tips.

Learning the law

Top commercial law firms work in a highly competitive global market where change is constant. Legal education needs to undergo something of a transformation if it is to help prepare lawyers for the future.

Law schools across the UK get much right. They provide their students with a solid foundation in core subjects from Contract Law to Trusts Law covering various main substantive legal areas. Plus, they teach options that push students to explore key issues and challenges more deeply.

Each provides training in legal skills and undertaking research. The case law and statutes of today aren’t written in stone. Students need to understand more than where we are with the latest law but also have the ability to see where legal developments are heading and be ahead of the curve.

Something of a revolution is beginning to happen that should be welcomed. Law schools have been traditionally run much like any other academic department. Now largely inspired by a greater emphasis on employability, many programmes are becoming more employer-engaged and practically minded.

Law schools engage more than ever with employers benefiting their students, academics and the firms they work with making their research-led teaching relevant and cutting edge.

I predict the next wave will be a growth in new areas like Chinese Law. Such a move would have been unthinkable for a lawyer at any UK university 20 or so years ago. Now it is becoming unthinkable to be a lawyer at any top commercial firm in the UK without some engagement with multijurisdictional cases or transactions often including very different legal systems such as China.

It is fitting that a highly competitive global market characterised by constant change impacts not only how top commercial law firms flourish, but how law schools collaborate with businesses to succeed.

32

Getting the qualifications you need

Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)If you’re a non-law graduate, your training starts with the GDL. This one-year, full-time conversion course puts you on an equal footing with law graduates and lays an important foundation for your training contract. You’ll be a student of BPP University which has locations in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester.

Legal Practice Course (LPC)All our trainee solicitors take the accelerated LPC at BPP University, either after their law degree or when they complete the Graduate Diploma in Law. It’s designed with the help of City law firms, approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and, the course runs for six and a half months. It has two intakes – one in August and one in February – plus a one-month self-study period that you complete before you begin. Much of the teaching is in small group sessions and there’s individual guidance on hand throughout.

You’ll study in London which will help you get ready for working life in the City. It also means you’ll benefit from the presentations and social events we run at our offices. These complement the knowledge you gain on your LPC and help to smooth the move from student to legal professional.

Financial assistanceWe will pay your course fees and a maintenance grant to help with living costs while you study. However, we don’t offer retrospective funding if you started or completed either the LPC or GDL before accepting an offer from us.

Our maintenance grants are:£10,000 for LPC students – £8,000 for GDL students in London – £7,000 for GDL students outside London.

Solicitors Qualifying ExaminationThe Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), being launched in September 2020, is a new qualification that will take the place of both GDL and LPC. If you started a non-law degree before autumn 2017, the GDL will still be available until September 2019. If you started later than that, you will take the SQE. Similarly, if you’re studying law and graduate by 2020, it’s likely you will take the LPC. Beyond that time, it is likely you will take the SQE. We’ll continue to update our website as further information is released by the SRA. www.hoganlovells.com/graduates

A good degree might help you land a training contract with us. But you’ll still need one or, if you’re a non-law graduate, two more qualifications under your belt before you start.

Sharpening your commercial focusAngus Rankin’s first experience of Hogan Lovells not only inspired him to pursue a career in Law but also gave him a unique insight into the importance of being client focused and commercially aware.

“ Think about the end-users of our legal advice, understand the competing pressures they are under, and what will help guide them towards the best result.”

I got to know Hogan Lovells in 2002. I was working in New York for one of their clients dealing with in-house lawyers and learning to understand contracts. My colleagues recommended that I contact Hogan Lovells, which had advised them on EU competition law and other matters. Somehow I ‘clicked’ with the firm. Accepting a training contract here was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Looking back, it seems apt that I first saw the firm from the client’s side of the table. The connection between Hogan Lovells and their clients is a strength and has shaped my career.

The London office offers trainees a wide choice of secondments – either to their international offices or to clients in the UK. During my training contract I wanted to experience life through the client’s eyes. My client secondment at this time was with SABMiller plc. It was the highlight of my training. It drummed into me that we always need to think about the end-users of our legal advice, understand the competing pressures they are under, and what will most help guide them towards the best result.

After qualifying into the construction and engineering disputes team in London, I jumped at the chance to spend two years in Tokyo on secondment to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. one of the world’s largest and most innovative engineering companies. I enjoyed working there so much that I decided to leave Hogan Lovells and joined Mitsubishi, eventually becoming General Counsel to one of their businesses in Europe. I instructed many different law firms but kept coming back to Hogan Lovells. What gave them the edge over competitors was that they could be trusted to work well in teams – across their different offices and practice areas. In addition, the client relationship partner went further than any of his competitors in responding to our needs – day or night. The firm also stays close to its alumni, and when I decided to come back to private practice it had to be ‘home’ to Hogan Lovells.

Your seats and secondments

Four seats. Four different practice areas. Essentially a new area of law, new experiences and new colleagues every six months. That’s what your training contract offers.

Choosing your seatsOur practice areas are particularly broad. You’ll never be short of high-quality options to explore. Tell us where you’d like to work and we’ll create a seat plan that takes your preferences into account. Two will be in our Corporate and Finance groups, and another in one of our Litigation teams, as these are where we have most of our qualification vacancies. In your third seat, you’ll have the chance to go on an international or client secondment.

We’ll ask you about your first seat preferences before you join. Then, mid-way through your first seat, where you’d like to sit in seats two, three and four. We’ll provide information to help you make your decisions and point you in the direction of associates and partners who can tell you about the work in their practice areas.

A flying startWe’ll kick things off with a comprehensive two-week induction, where you’ll start honing your all-important legal research skills. You’ll also get your first taste of HL BaSE, our thriving social enterprise legal practice, and discover the positive impact a lawyer can make – from a social as well as a business point of view.

36

International secondmentsFew law firms give you access to the kind of fascinating and complex legal work that crosses continents. We’re one of those firms and, in your third or fourth seat, you could spend six months in one of our international offices. Currently we have trainees on secondment in Brussels, Dubai, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, New York, Paris, Singapore and Washington D.C.

Client secondmentsAnother way to spend your third or fourth seat is on a client secondment. Spending six months in a client’s in-house legal department is a great way to sharpen your commercial edge and get an inside, close-up view of business from a different vantage point. Our trainees on secondment with clients right now are tackling a huge variety of work across a wide range of industries.

What’s it like to work in London? In the words of our trainees; it’s “vibrant”, “exciting”, “diverse” and “hectic”. They also tell us that working in the legal sector in London allows them to be “really close, literally and metaphorically, to the cutting-edge of law and business.” None of that will be a surprise. London is full of buzz, it’s packed with options for every interest and taste.

Our trainees recommend all sorts of ways to get the most out of it. Exploring the parks and food festivals around the city on the weekend, or sampling the quirky neighbourhood restaurants. Taking in a walk around old London or boarding a canal boat at Camden Lock and sailing to the middle of

London Zoo. Relaxing in St John’s Lodge Gardens, Regent’s Park, taking in a play or a gallery, or just hitting the huge choice of bars and pubs.

Our office is well located too. It’s on the edge of the City, yet the shopping and nightlife of Covent Garden and the West End are within easy reach. Step outside our front door, and you’ll find no end of places to eat and drink. Try the food stalls on Leather Lane and Exmouth Market, or for drinks after work, head to Smithfield or Long Lane.

“ When it comes to getting around, I use the Citymapper app for everything. It’s a dream!”

Nikki Ogun, Trainee

“ You can sense the buzz of the City as you come into Central London in the morning.”

“ Hogan Lovells is a firm where your personality is valued, and it forms part of what you can offer as a future lawyer.”

Kanchana Harendran, Associate

Your application

A quick, enquiring mind is a given. We look for a strong academic record that features excellent results from GCSE (or equivalent) onwards, and includes a good 2:1 or above (or equivalent). Commercial nous is vital too. You’ll need to get to grips not only with the world of law, but with the business worlds our clients operate in.

Then there’s the ability to think around corners and see beyond the obvious. We like to challenge conventional approaches here – pooling our expertise to do things differently from others and from what we’ve done in the past. Team spirit is another essential. We’ll want you to pitch in, collaborate with colleagues from different sectors and countries, and help us deliver seamlessly for clients across borders.

Since globalisation is a fact of life, and we’re one of the world’s largest global legal practices, we also look for an international outlook. You’ll be someone who adapts naturally to new surroundings, responds to cultural nuances and tackles the unpredictable with confidence.

Last, but not least, you’ll be resilient. Rigorous attention to detail won’t faze you, nor will the pressure of complex work, deadlines or putting in the extra hours to deliver the most professional job possible.

Some of the world’s biggest and toughest legal assignments regularly land on our desks. When they do, what does it take to handle them?

“ Don’t feed back quotes from our own publicity, however great they are. It’s you we are interested in, and your reasons for choosing law and Hogan Lovells.”
