LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTSThe Center for Hearing and Speech is the only full-service resource in Houston to teach deaf children to listen and speak without the use of sign language. Thousands of Houston-area children have gained listening, speaking and literacy skills through programs at two on-site outpatient clinics and the Melinda Webb School. AFA is in its fifth year of providing in-class music instruction at the Melinda Webb School, helping young students build on their listening and speaking skills through music. The school’s Kindergarten class will demonstrate what they are learning in our collaboration and will be joined by AFA and Center for Hearing and Speech faculty with remarks.
The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, non-profit education and service center dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired people to live independently, offering educational programs, community services and outpatient rehabilitation. In 2015, AFA and The Lighthouse established a choir for their clients under the guidance of Shelagh Moran, Vice President and COO at The Lighthouse; Ms. Moran will speak about our partnership and the AFA Lighthouse Choir will perform.
AFA is proud to be inclusive of all students who are musically ready to join our programs, including students with autism and neurological differences, some of whom attend The Monarch School and Institute. The luncheon will feature one of those students, Sophia Velasquez, in performance and her mother, Tatiana Mejia-Velasquez, describing the impact AFA has had on their lives.
