Grace Episcopal Cathedral Topeka, Kansas
November 2014 Vol. 88, No. 11
Dear Friends,
By the time you read
this article our
renovation of the
Cloister Hall will be
nearly complete. At
long last the dust will
have settled and been wiped away. No
more detours or searching out routes
to the restrooms, no more surprise fire
alarms sounding off. Thanks be to
God!
We’ve had a few wrinkles along
the way, but in the end, the builders
did a great job for us and we finished
exactly on budget, even including
some upgrades to our original plans.
Now, we move on to Phase 2
planning, fundraising and execution.
Actually, the planning is done. Our
architectural drawings are 100 percent
complete. We will send these to two
or three builders for bidding a
Guaranteed Maximum Price and select
accordingly.
However, we cannot begin Phase
2 until we have pledge commitments
to fund the new addition. Currently,
we are at $2.2 million of the $3
million estimated to complete the
project. We may find in our bid
process that the cost is a little less or a
little more but that number should be
close. A lot of people have dug deep
to put us where we are, but only about
half our households have pledged so
far. If you haven’t made a pledge,
please do so and help us meet our
goal. Eighty more pledges averaging

Put your turkey in the oven early and join us for our traditional
Thanksgiving Day worship! The celebration of Holy Communion
begins at 10 a.m. and will last about one hour. This is a community-
wide celebration so invite your neighbors, family and friends!
Let us come into his presence with
thanksgiving; let us make a joyful
noise to him with songs of praise! —Psalm 95:2
From the Dean continued
Few details left in the renovation of Cloister Hall Delays in the renovation of our Cloister Hall space have caused the project to finish late. We’ll
get our occupancy certificate with some restrictions (no use of the stairs until our guardrails are
installed, and until the treads and landing have been fitted with their finish, a manufactured
stone, which we expect will be done around the first week in November). We’ll also be using
temporary fire rated doors between the gathering room and the cathedral foyer. There will be some tweaks along the
way but we will be fully functional in our beautiful new space very soon. Then we can focus our efforts on raising the
remaining funds for Phase 2 and opening the doors to our new main floor parish hall (see the Dean’s cover letter).
Manna for Grace nearing $10,000 mark! Thanks to everyone who is participating in our Manna for Grace program. The Cathedral earned $410 in September;
and $9,656 has been earned since this program began in December 2012. If you are a Dillons or Hy-Vee shopper and
would be willing to allow the Cathedral to benefit from your grocery shopping, Margaret La Rue can help you get
started. It doesn’t cost you anything but the more people who participate, the more it benefits Grace Cathedral. Please
contact Margaret at 785-221-4002 or [email protected].
About the window…
The stained glass window on the front cover of The Chimes this month is located above the St. Mary’s Chapel exterior
door. It depicts Jesus and two of his Apostles in Emmaus after his resurrection. It was not until Jesus blessed the bread
that the apostles recognized the Lord in his resurrected body. (Luke 24:13-31)
Sympathies Sympathies of the parish go out to Sally Henson and family on the October 3 death of long-time member, Chuck
Henson; and to the family of Cathedral member Ruth Reineman, who passed away October 10. May their souls, and
the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
$10,000 each will get us there. A
pledge of any size is important and
appreciated. We are also
investigating possible grants and
philanthropic gifts from those who
aren’t Cathedral members.
If you haven’t yet made a pledge
and would like us to resend a capital
campaign packet, contact the church
office. If you are new to the
cathedral since our initial campaign
and didn’t have an opportunity to
participate the first time around,
we’d be happy to send a packet to
you as well. I will be calling on
many of you who haven’t pledged to
see if I can come talk with you about
this project and funding.
Our hope is to be able to begin
construction of the new parish hall
next spring or summer, but, again,
we can’t begin until we have the
commitments to fund it. Please help
us!
Our plan is to have plaques in
the new parish hall honoring
contributors to the project. Everyone
who pledges $100 or more will be
listed, and categories will be set:
$100-999; 1,000-4,999; 5,000-9,999;
10,000-14,999; 15000-24999; 25,000
-49,999; 50,000-99,999; 100,000-
499,999; 500,000+. Donors who
don’t want their names listed will be
listed as anonymous.
Someone asked me, “What if I
make a pledge and can’t fulfill it?” I
told them to think carefully about
what they could do before making a
pledge, but like annual budget
pledges, capital campaign pledges
are “until further notice.” Sometimes
things happen in our lives that we
can’t foresee, and it changes
everything. If you are unable to
fulfill your pledge or must reduce it,
we ask that you notify us of this as
soon as possible so we can plan
accordingly. Usually, a change in a
pledge or two is not devastating to
our budget.
This question certainly raises
another one, though. What if
something has changed in your life
that allows you to do more? If this is
so, then consider adjusting your
pledge UP! I’ll even present this as a
challenge. If you are able, would you
consider moving up from where you
are now to the next category listed
above? For instance, if your pledge
was $12,000, could you increase
your pledge to the next category of
$15,000 to help us reach our
$3,000,000 goal? If you can, please
call and ask for a new pledge card or
call Kent (235-3457) and tell him to
adjust the pledge card we have for
you. If all this sounds desperate, let
me assure you it isn’t. It is hopeful
and I am confident that we will all do
all we can to fund this venture and
make it a success in time to begin
next year and finish in 2016.
My thanks to all of you for your
faithfulness and generosity!
—I’ll see you in church,

For the past 40 years, Roy Ridgeway has
quietly undertaken a ministry that has
escaped the notice of most members of the
congregation.
It’s not that Roy is an unfamiliar figure
at Grace Cathedral. Since coming here in
1962, Roy has worn many hats. He serves as
Usher Captain for Sunday morning services
and leads one of our Saturday morning
Sandwich Ministry teams to feed the hungry
in our Cathedral neighborhood. He has been
a member of the Vestry, Building and
Grounds, Budget, and Stewardship
committees, among many other duties over
the years. He was the Cathedral’s Junior
Warden at the time of the Great Fire in 1975
and was one of the first on the scene when
the fire was reported.
But not many people know that Roy has
been the caretaker in the Cathedral’s
columbarium, The Chapel of the Resurrection, since it was established in
1974. The columbarium is located on the lower level of Cathedral Hall. It
houses niches where the ashes of the departed are laid to rest.
Following the inurnment service in the chapel, after everyone has left, Roy
performs his ministry with quiet reverence to see that the urn is placed in the
assigned niche and that the appropriate memorial plaque is placed on the
outside.
For additional information about the Cathedral’s columbarium, please
contact Kent Wingerson at 235-3457.

Thoughts on our WEDNESDAY SERVICE from Dean Lipscomb
The current average attendance
at our midweek service is five,
including the priest. It makes no
sense to continue a Eucharist service
and the preparation involved with a
congregation this size.
I am most willing to consider a
different format at this time—brown
bag lunch and Bible study; noonday
prayers and a lunch discussion
group—whatever might be more
attractive and would garner
commitment of weekly attendance
from a number of people. Actually,
five or six would be enough for one
of these other gathering formats, but
not for a Eucharist with sermon as
we have now.
If you are interested in
continuing (and supporting with your
regular attendance) a mid-week
gathering at noon or in the evening,
please let me know. You can also let
me know what kind of gathering
appeals most to you. If we cannot
increase our numbers at Eucharist or
sustain a committed group for some
type of weekday service, I will
discontinue our weekday worship.
Effective the first week of Advent
(December 1).
