YORK REGION 4-H MEMBER NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014

FLIA & Ignite continued… We all had the chance to participate in the high ropes course, allowing us to take a risk and step out of our comfort zone. The whole week was about taking risks so that we would be able to grow and advance in our leadership skills. Overall, FLIA was a great camp and I would recommend it to all youth who want to advance their leadership skills, meet new friends, and have a week filled with fun and laughter. Another camp that I would recommend is Ignite. This year it was held at the beginning of May in Campbellford, Ontario at Ganaraska Forest Centre. Cassie and I had a blast at this 4-H opportunity.

It was a much smaller environment, which made it easier to develop strong relationships with those attending. We all realized what we needed to work on as individuals in order to make group tasks run smoothly. During the three days, we went tree trekking, played games, learned about leadership skills, and listened to a few guest speakers. These two camps have already been a highlight of my year. I am always so excited to see what 4-H has to offer each year, with opportunities that I am able to attend. Networking and learning to do by doing beside fellow 4-H’ers who quickly become close friends, is a wonderful experience that some members don't take advantage of. I encourage each member to take a risk and enhance their 4-H experience like Cassie and I have with the many camps that 4-H offers.

YORK REGION 4-H MEMBER NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014

Chocolate Club A press report by Katrina & Mattia Seemann

Throughout the year, the 4H chocolate club has held lots of exciting and educational meetings. In our first meeting, we had delegates visit us from 4H Jamaica, and everybody had a blast! In later meetings, we created delicious snacks such as chocolate haystacks, truffles, cream eggs and molded chocolate Easter bunnies.

At one of the meetings, Danny Seemann, a graduate pastry chef from George Brown College, gave us a tutorial on tempering chocolate. We were shown the correct way to melt chocolate to get the right texture. We learned that tempering chocolate was a very precise procedure, and it requires lots of practice. We also learned tips and tricks such as putting the melting chocolate on your bottom lip, (since it is the most sensitive part of your body) to test the temperature – if it is still lukewarm, you would need to add more chips of chocolate to cool it. When Danny had finished tempering all of the chocolate, he used it to make tuxedo strawberries, a cute snack which everyone enjoyed afterwards!

In the last meeting we held, the chocolate club re-created an episode of MasterChef Canada, complete down to the aesthetics. The club was divided into two teams, and each team competed to win a challenge by creating a beautiful edible centerpiece. In the end, both creations ended up looking great, so when the competition was declared over, the teams indulged in their masterpieces. The chocolate club’s achievement will take place just after our final meeting – a tour to the Cadbury chocolate factory and Soma chocolate makers in Toronto. We’ll keep you

updated!

bowls! We made a white sauce instead of tomato sauce. We got to use toppings like shrimp (my favourite!!), chicken and vegetables like broccoli, mushrooms, green peppers and onions. We all really liked this type of pizza. We also made pizza soup that was very yummy and a nice change from dough. Our judging skills were put to the test with a class of pizza cutters. At the end of the meeting, each member got to take home a bag of homemade dough to make into pizza for their family. At our fifth meeting, we made pizza bread. This type of dough is made with quick rise yeast so it doesn’t take as long. We worked in pairs and pressed our bread out into a rectangle and put sauce and toppings down the middle, then cut the dough and braided it. It is kind of like a pizza pocket. Then we each got to take half of our bread home. This was my favourite meeting; the pizza bread looked so good when it came out of the oven and it tasted even better!! We are having so much fun learning about the history of pizza and how to make it homemade on our own; nothing tastes better than homemade pizza!!!

Hi, my name is Hudson Thompson and I am the Press Reporter for our cooking club. The project we are doing is called, “The Pizza Project.” We have eleven members in our club. Our leaders are Karen Coates, Teresa Thompson and Marion Buckle. Brooke Thompson is our Youth Leader. The President is Caleb English, with Vice President Madison Simpson, Secretary Samantha Aabo, and Photographer Sara Gerencser. We have had five meetings so far. At our first meeting we learned how to make pizza dough and pizza sauce from scratch. We got to make a lot of pizzas with the toppings we chose. I think we put a little too much cheese on our pizzas. At our second meeting we learned how to make pizza healthier by choosing healthy toppings and choosing thinner pizza crust dough. We made Chicago Style Thin Crust Pizza with another pizza sauce recipe. We didn’t like this pizza as much because it used too much sauce and the sauce ran everywhere. But we still all ate it! At our fourth meeting we made Authentic Italian White Pizza and another type of pizza dough; we got to see it rise so well that it overflowed the

Photography Club Leader AnnaLena Seemann shares the latest club news: “The Photography Club ventured out on two field trips lately, one on AnnaLena's property where members photographed nature, one another, and any animals they could see including four chickens. They also went to Markham Farmers Market and Sheridan Nurseries where there was ample opportunity for great close-up photos of flowers and lots of angles and textures to capture. Members also judged their assignment photos for public speaking practice. The Achievement is coming up on the 27th!”

Photos from second meeting at the Hulshof family farm Leader Brad Hulshof writes, “Markham Dairy Club members recently learned about the anatomy of a cow, as well as how to judge a cow. Younger club members were each then paired with a senior member and had to judge four cows together. They were required to explain their reasons to everyone for placing the cows in the order they chose.”

Exchange Fundraising Club at Lionel’s Farm & Harrogate Hills Riding School

The Exchange Fundraising Club extends our deep gratitude to Sharon Kay of North York Farmers Ltd./ Tru Country and Garden for enabling us to fundraise with fellow clubs at the Easter Egg-stravaganza. The excited winner of the raffle basket was Allison Jackson. We also thank Carrie Purcell and the entire Purcell family for inviting us to Lionel’s Farm to BBQ, and sell baked and home-made items, plus animal treats to new and long-time farm visitors. We thank Pat Gillis, owner of Harrogate Hills Riding School, for hosting our first 4-H Family Yard Sale as part of the larger Mount Albert Village Association annual yard sale event that this year attracted over 50 participating sites. Pat also donated the enormous sacks of carrots that the club sold to feed hungry animal friends at Lionel’s. Finally, thank you to Attila Demjen of snapd Stouffville/ Uxbridge and other snapd partners who continue to cover and promote our events.

Funds to date total $4040.08, bringing us closer to our target of $12,000!

Achievement events commence with Queensville/Belhaven Cooking Club

SUMMER 2014

We held our sixth and final meeting at Karen Coates' and welcomed the Clover Buds as a part of this meeting. We got into groups and each group invited a Clover Bud member to join them. We showed them how to cut vegetables and we each got to make our own mini pizzas on english muffins and on pita shells. Following our pizza making, we practiced our demonstrations and program for our achievement night. Our achievement program was held on June 5 at the North Union Community Hall. We had about fifty people come out to our special evening, including family, friends, members of The Women's Institute, and even East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson and council members! We gave speeches and a demonstration on how to make pizza bread. Our photographer had a display of pictures from our meetings for everyone to look at. Each club member brought a pizza dish to serve to all our guests. The menu included: pizza soup, bread pizza, tomato-based pizza, white authentic Italian pizza, and dessert pizzas. Everyone loved it!! This has been such a fun club and we have all learned how to make healthy pizzas from scratch. This was my first time being a press reporter and I hope you have enjoyed reading about our club. Thanks to our leaders, Karen Coates, Marion Buckle, Teresa Thomspon, and our youth leader Brooke Thompson for leading this project.
