Ann E Kummer, EA, CPA, President Kenneth Kohlhof, EA, 1st Vice-President Michael E Lawrence, EA, 2nd Vice-President Eve M. Lansing, EA, Treasurer Vicki Hermann, EA, Secretary Board Report

    Meeting: June 6, 2015 President

Can we really be nearly halfway through 2015 already? From what the calendar say, apparently so. In January, I discussed the need for positive change, yet the truth of the matter is that change occurs for better or worse. Many of us endured a difficult busy season, for various reasons, but whether we attributed those trials to tax law changes or to shifts in our practices or our lives, we faced change among challenge. Member needs do not remain static; therefore, board needs and responses cannot either. One of our biggest goals for the upcoming year will be to revisit our strategic plan to determine how to support NAEA’s updated strategic plan. Jeff Gentner, EA’s membership survey offers some insight into what we’re doing right and in what areas we need to improve. I hope we can collectively expand the organization and strengthen NYSSEA as an affiliate state-wide from Buffalo to Montauk and all points in between. The board must adapt to encourage this growth, collaborating in both new and tried-and-true methods. A board that thrives on change and pulls on its own energy and of its membership often inspires others to involvement, transferring its dynamism back to members, creating a symbiotic, sustaining relationship. We are faced with a major mid-year change of Treasurer as Eve Lansing, EA is relocating to North Carolina. With that, I see an opportunity for us to adjust our procedures to allow our next Treasurer more time to globally review the financials, prepare a budget in line with strategic goals, and participate as an Executive Committee member rather than being bogged down by recordkeeping and data entry. This transition will be discussed during the board meeting and, for the first few months, it will continue to evolve, with a more formal evaluation to be scheduled in mid to late 2016. I personally want to thank Eve for her efforts in the position and wish her and her husband, Tom the best as they begin their new life. May has been a very busy NYSSEA month beginning with our 2nd Annual Legislative Day and followed by NAEA’s Fly-In, APEX, and the NAEA Board Installation and Board Meeting. Our own Legislative Day was fantastic and I urge you to join us (or join us again) next year. It was a pleasure to meet with legislators to introduce them to EAs and to request support for our Senate and Assembly bills. You’re never on your own so no fear of stage fright. My thanks to Michael Lawrence, EA, his staff, and his Government Relations Committee for their efforts before, during and after tax season to plan, implement, and follow-up on this event. Special thanks to Ken Kohlhof, EA for his work after Legislative Day for revisions to the legislation following our Ways and Means staff meeting. This was my first time attending NAEA’s Fly-In in Washington, D.C. and yet another marvelous experience. A 10-member NYSSEA contingent met with Sen. Gillibrand’s staff as well as with Sen. Schumer’s staff and the Senator himself (photo op!). Patrick O’Hara, EA and I teamed up to meet with Rep. Chris Gibson, who subsequently signed on to co-sponsor the EA Credential Act bill! I thank all NYSSEA members, many of whom sit on the board, for their time and effort in attending one or both legislative events. APEX was valuable, with much to learn about NAEA member benefits, changes in member services (paper invoices!), membership goals, Educating America updates and information, roundtable discussions focusing on increasing benefit awareness and perception of membership value, and the NAEA Profile Challenge!

Can we get NYSSEA members to complete their profiles? Less than 5% of us have complete profiles. Think yours is complete? Login to naea.org and find out by exploring all the areas of your profile. The affiliate with the highest increase in completed profiles amongst its members by October 15, 2015 will win a prize (TBD). Please check your profile and encourage your chapter members to do the same. Lastly, congratulations to Jeff Gentner, EA for becoming chair of the Affiliate Council! My trip to D.C. ended with the NAEA Board Installation and then the NAEA Board Meeting. It was a pleasure to witness Donald Rosenberg, EA’s installation as a director. It was also a delight to be there for the full changing of the guard, with Terry Durkin, EA’s installation as President, as Lonnie Gary, EA transitioned to Immediate Past President. We also said goodbye to Mike Nelson, NAEA’s long-time EV. We wish him well in his new post and welcome John Fiegel, CAE into the Interim EVP position. NAEA has formed a search committee to identify our next EVP. I have asked Don to serve as chair of the Nominating Committee, to which he has agreed. He’ll be looking for a few good members to run for open positions. Please nominate yourself or others for positions on the board and always look for new faces, whether for board positions or committees. It would be a magnificent “problem” to have too many candidates or too many volunteers for committees. I also wanted to tip my proverbial hat to Central and to Brooklyn/Queens. Central, I noted, has a state legislator coming to visit at a chapter meeting in August. Brooklyn/Queens has planned a community service event by teaming up with a distinguished speaker and Target stores. I’m thrilled that you are scheduling non-CE specific events which can increase recognition of the credential and increase our presence in our communities. I hope to see other chapters thinking outside the box and beyond CE. Our conference education and registration committees have been busy firming up plans and I believe we’ll have another wonderful, strong conference this year, the first at Honors Haven. We’ll hear from Henry and Koreen at our meeting. I hope each of you is actively inviting others to attend this fantastic event! As you see, we have a packed agenda. I’ll see you at the meeting, but I’m available whenever you need to reach me. I’m pleased to serve this organization. Please come prepared with your thoughts and ideas after reviewing the full packet.

One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals. ~ Michael Korda Respectfully submitted, Ann E. Kummer, EA CPA

Board Report Meeting: June 6, 2015

    1st Vice President

To the Members of the Board:

Since the January Board Meeting, a large part of my time has been spent doing what most of you have been doing: being one of America's Tax Experts! With only three returns still on extension (one of them mine), my attention has turned to the affairs of NYSSEA.

In addition to participating in the monthly executive committee conference calls, I was actively involved as Chairman of the Membership Committee (see separate report). On the local level, I was invited by the IRS to the Practitioners Liaison Meeting held on May 19, 2015. I look forward to being more involved with the IRS at the chapter level.

The most significant undertaking for me during this period, was attending the Albany Legislative Day on May 5. While we had fewer participants than last year, I believe this was more than offset by the experience we gained last year, enabling us to be far more effective this year. Kudos to Michael Lawrence and his staff for successfully planning a steadily shifting event with many legislators, most of whom remembered us from last year. In addition, Michael was able to schedule a meeting with the Ways & Means Committee, where our proposed bill resided. By virtue of being the only Executive Committee member in that that meeting not attending the D.C. Fly-In, I had the opportunity to follow up with Mr. Minoru Hata and address his concerns with our proposal. With some small changes to the language and guidance from Mr. Craig Swiecki, I am happy to report the bill has been revised, accepted by the Ways & Means Committee and was presented to our legislative sponsors in both houses on May 27.

    Respectfully submitted,

Ken Kohlhof, EA 1st Vice President, NYSSEA

Ballston Spa, NY 12020-1901 [email protected]

May 27, 2015 Treasurer's Report for the June 6, 2015 Board Meeting It has been a much quieter few months as your Treasurer; however that cannot be said for my tax season. First and foremost I want to thank you all again for being so patient with me as I ventured on this world wind journey. Still by far the biggest help has been keeping the NYSSEA Email open on my computer and checking it several times a day thanks to the great advice of our wonderful President Ann. I hope that I have gotten payments out in a much timelier manner. Now that I finally have a grasp on things I decide to move to North Carolina on July 1st. I look forward to the move but will miss you all however I plan to keep being a member or NYSSEA as well as NCSEA since I have so many clients in NY that I will continue to serve. A few notes about the financials: 1. You will note that there are some unclassified items in income, this is due to not having Event Reports or copies of itemized deposit slips. 2. There are 4 open items in Undeposited Funds totaling $639 which appears to all be sales receipts from the Auction at Conference. My guess is that the funds were deposited, but mixed with other conference funds. I have made no adjustments here as I was not the Treasurer at the time and I can't be positive as to what actually happened. 3. There is a small balance of $17.50 in Accounts Payable but that too is from before my time and I was unsure of where to offset an adjusting entry since I could not find the original source. 4. I did make a GJE to clean up some old items that were being carried on the bank statement since early 2014. 5. I also went back and redid the bank statements to November to clear out the reconciliation Discrepancies Account

    Page 11

  • Once again I thank you for your patience and kindness. I have truly enjoyed my time serving on the Board and I will miss you all. What a group, and what a great learning experience it has been. Respectfully Submitted, Eve M. Lansing, EA Treasurer - October 26, 2014 - June 6, 2015

Immediate Past President Report June 2015

Like most of you since our last board meeting in January I have been distracted from my work for NAEA by tax season, I know shame on me. The role of the IPP is to advise the president as they take office. Ann and I have been in contact throughout the past months to discuss various issues and concerns as they arise. We also try to anticipate events. I did attend the legislative day in Albany representing NYSSEA and my district. In addition I did meet with Handel Edwards to talk about chapter revitalization. I would like to see chapters play a more important role in all of our strategic initiatives not just education. As a member of the NAEA board I was elected to serve all of our members not just those in NY. That being said I will still continue to look out for our interests but recognize there are times there may be conflict. I did have the honor of serving on the board and can report that we have many important initiatives on the table this year. Our strategic goals are in the MAY/JUNE EA Journal and need to be discussed at our June board meeting. In addition the board is undertaking a search for a new EVP. Mike Nelson has moved on to another organization, National Court Reporters of America and we have appointed a new interim EVP John Feigel who took over on May 16. I am going to be heading up the nominating committee for NYSSEA this June as has been our tradition. I look forward to your suggestions. Respectfully submitted Donald Rosenberg, EA

  • Report from the Executive Director

June 6, 2015 NYSSEA Board Meeting

Since the January 2015 NYSSEA Board Meeting, I have been busy with a number of projects, which always includes maintenance of the NYSSEA Web Site. The hardest part of updating the web site is getting information from the Chapters. I urge all Chapter Reps and other officers to check their Chapter Page to make sure that the Officer information is up-to-date. Also, please check the calendar page and let me know of any meetings that need to be posted. Most Chapters have started including a meeting flyer that I can easily attach to an event. I think members like having the flyers available since they include all the details about the event. The last update of the Find an EA page was done in December 2014. I will be doing the next update of this page in mid-July since the majority of renewals for NAEA are due July 1, 2015. This will insure that our map database is as up-to-date as possible.

I have been getting more than usual correspondence from new members asking about what NYSSEA is offering to them since they were required to join NYSSEA when they joined NAEA. I have been passing that information along to the chapters or membership committee.

NYSSEA Board Members and Committee Chairs continue to use the NYSSEA Board – Shared Folder in Dropbox. Dropbox seems to be working for everyone. The NYSSEA Board – Shared Folder continues to grow and should make it easier for Board members to get files they need. PLEASE NOTE: If you are using the LETTERHEAD, you must first DOWNLOAD it to your computer. If you use it “within” DropBox, you permanently change the letterhead with your added information, making it useless to others who try to access it. Currently in the NYSSEA Board – Shared Folder you will find the most current Expense Voucher, Event Report Form and the Motion Form along the current NYSSEA Board Letterhead and a 2014-2015 Board Misc. folder, which contains the 2014-2015 Board Contact Information roster and the 2014-2015 NYSSEA Board Meeting Timeline document. There are also folders containing the most current SOPs and Policies, current Bylaws and Board Packets.

    Communication

Since the January 2015, I have added 3 posts to the NYSSEA Blog and have created and sent 5 e-blasts, including the NYSSEA Member Survey, Information of the NAEA PAC contributions, notices relating to the NYSSEA Legislative Day, the Board Meeting Travel and Report Information requests and a comprehensive May 2015 NYSSEA Update (including the October Conference SAVE-A-DATE).

  • NYSSEA Member Survey

As my project, after attending the NAEA Schuldiner/Smollan Memorial Leadership Academy in Baltimore, MD in June 2014, I decided (after discussions with then-NYSSEA President, Don Rosenberg, EA and 1st VP Ann Kummer, EA, CPA) to take on the creation, distribution and analysis of a member survey to assess the needs and wants of our state EAs. The goal was to gather as much information as possible, while limiting the number of questions to be answered with the hopes of receiving more responses than usual for a survey of this type. The survey was sent to 4521 EAs in New York State on January 21, 2015. There were 244 responses received (149 identified as members, 86 non-members and 9 who wished to remain anonymous). The Executive Board approved spending $500 to fund prizes to randomly drawn names of participants, in order to hopefully increase participation. There were 4 prizes awarded (Amazon Gift Cards). Detailed results of the survey are attached to this report and I would like to spend some time at the June NYSSEA Board Meeting reviewing and deciding what to do with the results.

    Other Activities

    1. Organized the June 6, 2015 NYSSEA Board Meeting successfully utilizing the new Travel/Hotel Reservation document.

    2. Gathered, edited and combined all Board and Committee Reports for the June 2015 Board Meeting 3. Participated in the monthly Executive Board telephone meetings 4. Continued to worked with a web developer to update the NY Find and EA page of the NYSSEA web site

due to changes made in the NAEA database format 5. Updated the NYSSEA Board Information with NAEA, as needed, and added our October Conference to

the NAEA web site Calendar Page. 6. Communicated via telephone or email with various Board Members on activities, concerns and/or

procedural clarifications 7. Participated in the Affiliate Presidents Exchange (APEX) conference calls and attended the APEX/ NAEA

May 2015 Meetings in Washington, DC (including the NAEA Fly-In Day)(see details below) 8. Prepared, Distributed, Analyzed the NYSSEA Member Survey that went out to members in January

    2015.

NAEA APEX Meetings – May 2015: Again, I had the opportunity to attend the NAEA Affiliates Presidents Exchange meetings in May 2015. A complete summary has been written and submitted by President Ann Kummer, EA, CPA, who was also in attendance. It was included in the May NYSSEA Update e-blast that went out to member on May 28, 2015 and is also included in the June 2015 NYSSEA Board Packet. I am entering my second year of my two-year term on the NAEA Affiliate Council and was recently named Chair of the Council. As a member of the NAEA Affiliate Council, all of my expenses are reimbursed by NAEA, so the usual stipend to help cover expenses for this meeting went to President Ann Kummer, EA, CPA. Having the opportunity to share and learn with other affiliate leaders continues to be a rewarding experience.

    Respectfully submitted,

Jeffrey R. Gentner, EA NYSSEA Executive Director

  • And the Survey Says…. Thank you to the 244 New York EAs who completed the NYSSEA Survey sent out in late January 2015. Your responses are appreciated and I have taken several hours analyzing the results. These results will be shared in detail with the NYSSEA Board at the June 6, 2015 meeting. There were 149 identified members and 86 non-members who completed the survey. Nine participants preferred to remain anonymous. Survey participants were asked about the value of NYSSEA member benefit, such as E-Blast Newsletters and Updates, NYSSEA Web Site Content, the NYSSEA Google Group, NYSSEA Chapter Education Meetings and the NYSSEA Annual Conference. Although value was found in all benefits, according to the survey, E-Blast Newsletters and Updates, the NYSSEA Web Site Content and NYSSEA Chapter Education Meetings provided the most value, while the NYSSEA Google Group and NYSSEA Annual Conference provided the least. Most of the respondents to the survey feel that they were receiving useful information from NYSSEA. These same respondents prefer to participate at local chapter level events rather than State-wide events. Although over 70% of respondents stated that they would refer another tax professional to NYSSEA and over 80% said they would renew their membership, only slightly over 50% stated they would attend an upcoming NYSSEA event. Social Media: survey respondents clearly prefer communication through email and e-blasts. Less than 15% of respondents chose Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn as a communication preference. As a culminating question, participants were asked for suggestions on how NYSSEA can improve the value of membership. As with many open-ended questions, there were a variety of responses that I tried to categorize and summarize as follows: EDUCATION: better speakers, stronger content, offer NTPI somewhere in the NYCity area, continue to have high-quality speakers and content at the NYSSEA Annual Conference, more education delivered via the web, why do we have only dinner-related CE opportunities, more NYS specific education, sponsor a well-known seminar and present it throughout the state. ANNUAL CONFERENCE: better hotel for the Annual Conference, better location (not always so close to NYC), more regional conferences throughout the state, less chapter meetings.

  • MEMBERSHIP: what benefits and services do you offer that other tax organizations currently do not, don't require membership in NAEA, membership is too expensive for young professionals. NYSSEA BOARD: I think the Board members need to reach out to more members to serve on committees, members are hesitant to volunteer but feel honored to be singled out and asked, communicate with your members on a regular basis, be very clear on why membership in NYSSEA is a professional benefit, there are many professional organizations to chose from, the board should analyze why should NYSSEA be the first choice, reach out to new EAs. EA CREDENTIAL: advertise "EA", elevate, enhance and protect right to practice, public promotion of EA and the value to the public, IMPROVE THE EA BRAND! Get the word out about what an EA is!! The most difficult part about being an Enrolled Agent is having to answer the question "What is an Enrolled Agent?". If you offered more events in communities to help inform the members what an Enrolled Agent is would show me that you are committed to improving the license’s marketability. COMMUNICATION: I like the e-mail newsletters a lot but often feel I do not have time to read them. Is there a way to make communications shorter but you can click through for more information? That way, we can get a quick idea of the content in the e-mail and then come back to it, communicate more about the membership. I was not aware of E-Blast newsletters until I saw this survey, I love that NYSSEA has Online Newsletters (E-Blasts) and more content on website, how about a Facebook Page for NYSSEA. AND, the Winners Are…. As promised, all survey respondents were numbered and electronically chosen to determine the winners of the Amazon Gift Certificates. 1st Place: $200 Gift Certificate – Mason Wristen, EA (Auburn, NY) 2nd Place: $100 Gift Certificate – Robert DiNapoli, EA (Bronxville, NY) 3rd Place: $100 Gift Certificate – Peter Thomann, EA (Staten Island, NY) 4th Place: $100 Gift Certificate – Alexis Gallati, EA (Rochester, NY) Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all who participate in the NYSSEA Member Survey.

  • #4 If you have NEVER been a member of NAEA/NYSSEA, would you please tell us why?

    Answer

At first I wasn't aware of your organization. After learning of it I was already downsizing my tax prep business and didn't feel I wanted to have that expense. was considered an affiliate ... actively work as Certified Financial Planner/tax prep:IRS I work for a consulting group in DC. I hold a CPA license from several mid-western states but currently reside in NY where I've not applied for a reciprocal license. Tax is not my current business; I hold the E.A. designation but only prepare a few tax returns for family & friends, primarily unpaid. If that changes, I would likely join. I do not meet the Continuing ED requirement of 30 credits per year. I follow the IRS requirement of 24 credits ( min of 16 in a year but a 3 year cycle of 72). Therefore 18 credits short in 3 years for NYSSEA membership. I am a member of NATP and just have not joined NAEA/NYSSEA. I am an enrolled agent and probably should. Membership fees The fees are too high to be a member. I don't see the value for the fees. Do not live in NYS. I am a member of PSEA, since I am a PA resident. Just never joined. I have not been convinced that the investment of time and money was a good value for me. not sure Cost of the membership I already belong to five professional organizations for my certifications. I know it would be nice to belong to EA organization but kind of hesitate to spend any more for memberships. I am in PA, but my client base is about 10% NY I am currently a member of NATP and (right or wrong) have always considered your organization similar to theirs with regard to the kinds of benefits and services offered Combined the national, and the state, right now to pricey. may be soon I'll be joining.. I am not sure why I should be member. I would need more information to decide Sorry, but I'm not sure whether I'm a member or not n/a I never put serious thought into what the benefits of a membership might include I feel I get enough help from The Tax Institute which my employer (H & R Block) provides for me. Member of NATP don't know new EA and never thought to join N/A I am a member of NATP and NSA. I'm not sure I need another membership. And the meetings that I've seen are in Batavia, and I just don't like to drive out of Rochester any more for business stuff. I work in PA; do several NY returns, but not enough to really be a member of the nyssea. member of NAEA/PA though. Need more info Because I'm in NJ Never thought of it. cpa member of aicpa When I was practicing for profit, I didn't know about this organization. Now I am retired and do pro bono work only. N/A Not sure how to become a member or the cost and benefits of a membership.

    Page 28

  • Did not see the benefit There are several other practitioner groups that meet my needs. NAEA seems to be very representation-specific, but my practice is geared more towards preparation.

No specific reason. I have not discerned where the benefits to me lie with membership. A substantial membership fee gains me what, exactly? I work for an organization that provides me with as many hours of CE as I could possibly want each year, free. I just joined. I have visited your website. I couldn't find any indication on the site of (a) benefits of joining and (b) how to join. I don't believe I am a member, where can I check. retiring soon and just don't want to start up anything new I am thinking about joining, but have reservations about 30 CE annually as oppose to IRS requirement of 72 every 3 years which is 24 annually. I was not aware of the professional organization. too expensive higher member fee I am already a member of NATP and NSA. I do not feel the need to join another organization. Thank you never joined Member of NATP. I work for a large public accounting firm, so I have a good resource for tax return preparation or learning. Also I don't have my own clients (other than assigned client by the firm) and do not need look for new client myself. I'm not sure that the benefits of membership are worth the dues, and I don't know what the organization is like ethically (e.g., what does NAPA and its affiliates want to accomplish with their lobbying activity?) Never heard of it Have no knowledge of the benefits of this organization Have not submitted my membership. Did not know about you. DON'T KNOWN ENOUGH ABOUT THE NYSSEA, WHAT WILL THEY DO FOR ME? Don't think the NYSSEA is that effective for its members. I am an EA who does not prepare Tax Returns, but am charged a $63 Preparer Tax Identification Number Yearly the new Preparer Office in the IRS(My Enrolled Agent Card is not even signed by the Director of Practitioner Enrollment, it's signed by the new Preparer Office Director). If I do Didn't know about it. dues is too expensive for me... UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ORG. N/A No reason, hopefully, one day I will. not enough time Not ready to pay dues right now. I never heard of this organization. I find the amount of CE credits required to maintain membership is excessive.

  • Question #5 If you are not currently a member of NAEA/NYSSEA but once were, please give a short reason why you are no longer a member. Your comments are valuable to the success of our Society.

Answer scheduling became a problem --- the CE credits were/are geared toward EA's --- I would need CFP CE My practice has declined a great deal due to family health problems and other factors. I am unable to make it profitable due to competition from national organizations which dominate my specialty-taxpayer representation. at first I felt guilty about not doing all of the required training. now i'm just too lazy (never get around to sending in the $$) N/A I was never a member Can't afford NAEA membership but I'm willing to pay for NY State membership if that is ever allowed. If I'm no longer a member it's simply because I didn't receive a renewal notice. Maybe you have an old address. sold practice. getting ready to retire. I've always been proud to be one of America's tax experts, but there are times when I need help. After years of belonging to NAEA, I decided that not enough of the services I wanted were there. I finally quit and joined NATP, where I'm a lot happier. I must say that when I belonged, I found NYSSEA to be the best part of my membership. Cost of National Dues n/a I believe the dues I paid to both the National/State Associations should have included CE. I don't believe there should be any additional fees. Specifically, on the state level,I don't need a night of dinner and drinks along with my CE. I would rather just show up for an hour or two and hear a meaningful lecture. N/A Retired from practice 11/1/14, but still maintaining the credential. fee is too high to join N/A n/a Double Membership fees I do not actively joining activities from the organization so it does not feel involved. Three reasons The biggest I was told to leave by a president. The other the board is only concerned with the downstate cliché of members and directors. The attitude that downstate is smarter and better than upstate is rampant in discussions No local chapter. I joined another state. N/A Membership Fee & Continue Education Credit Charges more than normal charged price.

I just joined. I am a CPA and a member of AICPA. multiple memberships cost more money. I don't have much time to

  • read more than I read now. I have a very small practice. Once the NAEA started to let anyone join, the NAEA negated the name EA. There is no way the NAEA can effectively represent EAs and also represent anyone else that preparers taxes. Because of the position I formally held with the company I work for higher member fee Felt my membership served me better at NATP for educational and peer members. N/A not prepare tax returns I should not have to purchase a yearly $63 PIN. The NYSSEA have allowed the IRS to bully and charge it's members for a PTIN when of 48,000 EA's country wide only app. 20,000 prepare tax returns. I even presented a Free Attorney willing to fight the issue to if NYSSEA paid court filing fees. The NYSSEA refuse to defend it No time N/A N/A NA semiretired. Fixed income

  • Answers #10 MEMBERS: What suggestions do you have for the NYSSEA Board to improve the value of your membership in NYSSEA? Non-MEMBERS: What suggestions do you have for the NYSSEA Board that would make you interested in joining NYSSEA in the future? ADVERTISE ON TV. LOBBY FOR TAX PREPARER LICENSING. If I wasn't gradually trying to retire I would probably join. None Require the Chapters to offer meetings convenient to all members not just a select few and bring better speakers and stronger content. offer credits to CFP parties & EA's Professional liability insurance and practice management advice (entity formation, fees, etc.) if I seriously entered the profession, likely in tax representation. Contact Colleges and invite Accounting Students to attend events for free as associated members. I was a member of the NYSSCPA while I was in college. It was educational, informative and it also help keep the current members informed as to what is coming up in our industry. It helped bring a young people environment to the group. Find a new location for the state annual meeting. Start a state research center or have volunteers to answer state related questions. Advertise "EA". more training and networking Communicate with your members on a regular basis. Be very clear on why membership in NYSSEA is a professional benefit. There are many professional organizations to choose from. The board should analyze why should NYSSEA be the first choice. Credit waiver over 70 years of age. My tax season is Feb. 1st to April 15th with hopefully no extensions. Perhaps an associate membership. Better member inquiry responses. Especially in issues of membership renewal. Also question # 2 is not properly stated: I attend 2 local chapters. The question only allows for one choice. The NTPI Level annual conference should be offered in the New York Metro area as well. A formal training or manual should be designed for the USTC Exam prep. CONTINUE TO HAVE HIGH QUALITY SPEAKERS/PRESENTERS AT NYSSEA CONVENTION As a non-member I attend one or two Continuing Education meetings per year but again I think the fees are too high for the value. Continuing information on tax prep education at reasonable cost. Reduce the membership fees. Sponsor Federal tax update seminars in the fall and winter at various cities in the state, by professional and well recognized seminar providers such=h as taxspeaker.com (jennings) Gear Up or Western Tax Seminars. Continue the efforts to educate the public and education institution about the EA credential tax related news dispatch such as IRS N-2015-02 guidance of retroactive application of transit benefit would make me interested in joining the member. I think you are doing a great job. more email and and Online Newsletter should be a great plus for all concerns. What benefits and services do you offer that NATP currently does not

  • I like the e-mail newsletters a lot but often feel I do not have time to read them. Is there a way to make communications shorter but you can click through for more information? That way, we can get a quick idea of the content in the e-mail and then come back to it. N/A Communicate more about the membership. I was not aware of E-Blast newsletters until I saw this survey. Don't require membership in NAEA. This survey should help, as we need to find out why they are not members. Maybe offer a free Meeting Event in a few regions as a group of chapters in 3-4 central locations. More Education opportunities Elevate, enhance and protect right to practice. Provide a professional photo and business support suite to each member. Suite would include business cards, letterhead, pamphlets and website. I would include ALL members, especially those who are operating their own business. For those employed by another firm I think it would enhance the perception of professionalism for them to also receive. The problem is NAEA itself. I don't feel they have my back on the things I run into. I loved NYSSEA but meetings in Batavia are tough for me because I can't drive at night, so I missed most of them, except on Saturdays. Somehow get more info the NY general EA public about Capital chapter. Become Functional. Overdoing the politics has not been productive. Try getting along with members no matter what part of the state they are from. The Civil War has ended! If you really cared about feedback, you wouldn't limit this space to 350 characters! The board's relationship to the chapters (and vice versa) is foggy. The board has zero visibility to the chapters and boards' agenda does not seem to be driven by the chapters. The board does not seem interested in strengthening the chapters at all. I would like the option of joining NYSSEA without being required to join NAEA. Well, I called the office a couple of times, when I first joined, received snooty answers. So, I never called back. Now, when I'm trying to view the commercials, I'm told the website isn't working. I tried to get research done a couple years ago, never was done. Constantly disappointed. Would like Facebook page! First, we need to be more aggressive in getting NYS to respect EAs and to include them when they reach out. They include attorneys and CPAs, but rarely EAs. Second, working to become the advocate of change for NY taxpayers. i.e. having NYS respect our POAs like IRS does. Please see my previous answer. Thank You. Additional focus on tax law updates, information sharing and CPE enhancing our knowledge I would love that NYSsEA has Online Newsletters (E-Blasts) and more content on website where we can share our work with other members just like your facebook groups just more organized I THINK YOU ARE DOING A GREAT SERVICE FOR EA's. MY ANSWERS TO 6, 7, AND 8 ARE TO DUE TO THE FACT I AM DEAF AND CANNOT ATTEND. IT SHOULD NOT REFLECT BADLY ON YOUR SERVICES. I COMPLETE THE CPE TESTS IN JOURNAL AND REAL ALL ARTICLES.

    Page 33

  • Answer I think we need to better communicate the value of NAEA/NYSSEA membership by highlighting the various benefits in e-blasts, at chapter events, the state conference, etc. Even long-standing members are often surprised by what's available on NAEA's site! I would like to know more about the benefits of being a member More local meetings to get to know chapter members Get rid of the extraneous noise in Google group. Sifting through the chatter is too time consuming. I am not the type of person who joins organizations just so I can add membership to my resume. I have no need of that. Give me something useful and interesting I can do with my time and I might consider it. Make valuable CPE available and affordable. Provide updates on new NYS Dept of Taxation and Finance regulations regarding preparers. More NYS tax seminars and workshops! I think that the promotion of being an EA is important. At one time nobody had any idea of what an EA was. Just keep promoting us and keep on top of both the IRS and NY Sate who seems to ignore everyone. Income taxes & Sales taxes in dealing with NY State are a disaster. They do not respect anyone, let alone an EA and that should change. give a big discount to everyone who has a membership in AICPA and they are a EA Sponsor or participate in local events to help promote the EA license. When 90% of people surveyed have no idea what an EA is, that should tell you something.

The most difficult part about being an Enrolled Agent is having to answer the question "What is an Enrolled Agent?". If you offered more events in communities to help inform the members what an Enrolled Agent is would show me that you are committed to improving the licenses marketability. NYSSEA seems somewhat self serving. There needs to be a way to get more people involved and less patting on the back of board members. It's a turn off to many members, and it's hard for newer members to assimilate into an organization that is dominated by a handful of higher powered NY EAs. Frankly at times, I feel inadequate to be a member. Offer more get acquainted venues As a member who now lives in Florida, but retains many NY clients, I would like to be able to attend the NYS meetings via Skype or some other form of virtual meeting. This has worked very well with the IRS when they have their virtual meetings with tax professionals. More education delivered via web. Establish coalitions with other professionals to increase influence with state local tax authorities and legislature. Possible collaboration with other associations to host events to reach more participants. More interchapter collaboration on both live and remote events. Reach out to new EAs I am planning to retire this year. Practice is currently up for sale. Listed with national firm, Accounting Practice Sales. Membership is too expensive for young professionals. A sliding scale based on salary might be more appropriate. You should think of having the Annual conference at different restaurants that offer vegetarian choices and at different locations.

    Page 34

  • Better location for annual meeting My membership would be more valuable if I took advantage of the benefits currently available. disband Non sure Once I passed my exam in 2013, an email to join would have been great! lower your fees decrease the member fee and course fee Probably I'll join when I leave my firm in the future. I would like to know more about the organization's goals. n/a Free trial No need I am interested in joining soon. Let me who/what you are. AT THE CONVENTION THE SPEAKERS DID A GOOD JOB OF CONTROLLING THE DISCUSSION TO AVOID ONE MEMBER TAKING OVER THE DISCUSSION. IN THE LOCAL MEETINGS, NOT SO. I HAVE BEEN TO TOO MANY WHERE ONE PERSON FEELS THE NEED TO SHOW THEIR VAST KNOWLEDGE AND TALK INCESSANTLY. HAVE STRONG SPEAKERS TO STILL THIS NOISE. The EA Fee was $125 before Loving Preparer IRS loss in District Court, now the EA Fee is $30 + $63 + $63 + $63 = $219. The IRS is even in violation of the Final Regulation written by the Attorney (new EA Fee $93 over 3 year cycle). NYSSEA have allowed verbiage in the Circular 230 in violation of law (EA's are to purchase a PTIN in accordance with I think you do a good job. I live 50 miles East of Rochester and it is so far to Batavia. I know I could go to Syracuse, but I prefer the Western group. this is why it is hard to get to dinners, etc. If you had dinners in Roch I would go. I would be more involved but it is the distance. Let us know what the volunteer opportunities are at the state or local levels. Maybe a "help wanted" area on the website or in the email blast. Start standing up to the IRS. Money and value is an issue for me so reduce membership fees or have different levels of membership You are most likely doing a good job, but I live too far away to attend the evening meetings. I have had to cut back my activities due a an injury and limited driving ability, but have participated in conferences in the past and found them very helpful. Continuous work on education of members and with law makers for the betterment of the profession will more than define the organization. I feel my local group is another educational outlet. Sometimes the content is good, other times, not so much. If you have the ability to come up with a state wide educational curriculum that each of the local chapters would present. I am a new member and am not yet familiar with offerings of NAEA/NYSSEA. I am seeking opportunities to network with other members for my career development as a new EA in NYS. More updates. I believe that we do not get enough updates on tax law changes coming from the state. not real familiar with your group, but nothing in my area

  • I would like to know more about the organization. More meeting in Manhattan. Support to create the Bronx/Westchester Chapter Continuing Ed requirement should be lessened.
