An early registration facility will be available on Sunday 20 March at the Jurys Inn Hotel Brighton (close to Brighton
mainline train station). During the conference, registration will be located in Dine Central, Level I, Bramber House.

Cloakroom and luggage storage
The venue does not facilitate a manned cloakroom. Coat rails will be available in Dine Central and a luggage storage
room will be located in Bramber House, please visit the IOP registration desk in Dine Central should you wish to
make use of this storage facility. All goods left in these areas are left at the owner's risk and neither the IOP nor the
University of Sussex accept any liability for any loss or damage to personal goods.
Internet access
There is free Wi-Fi in the venue through the conferences network. The passwords are all lowercase letters with
regular spaces (as below). Delegates can also log in to Eduroam if they are already members of this network.

A Co-op supermarket is located in Bramber House and is open 7 days a week. The Post Office located inside the Co-
op is open Monday to Friday. The Union Shop is located in Falmer House and is open Monday to Friday. John
Smith’s bookshop is located in the library. There is a pharmacy located next to Lancaster House.
ATMs can be found on the ground floor of Bramber House, York House reception and Sussex House.
Health services
The Health Centre at the University operates a standard GP practice. If you need to see a doctor, call 01273
249049 between 09:00 and 17:00 weekdays to make an appointment. For an emergency outside of these hours,
please ring Security at York House 01273 873333 or from an internal phone on 3333.
Sports facilities
Sussex sport facilities are available all conference delegates; gym sessions and other classes are charged at £4.30
and £4.40 each respectively. Simply show your delegate badge when registering for a session. For further

Dietary requirements
Participants with special dietary requirements are asked to notify the conference office by email prior to their arrival
if they have not already done so when registering. Those with special dietary requirements other than vegetarian are
asked to make themselves known to the catering team. It will not be possible to provide an alternative menu unless
prior notification has been received. We are aware that nut allergies in particular present a serious problem to some
people. The venue catering team can provide details of the ingredients of any particular dish, but cannot provide
assurances that the food has not been cross contaminated with traces of nuts during ingredient processing at
manufacturer’s site or during food preparation/service on site. For these reasons, we regret we are unable to provide

Monday 21 March – Welcome reception - Meeting House
An evening reception will be held from 17:45 on Monday 21 March in Meeting House.
The Grade II listed Meeting House at the University of Sussex was designed by Sir Basil Spence, and was completed
in 1966. It is a complex structure formed with an asymmetric truncated conical roof covered with copper and
pitched stained glass central roof light. Externally the walls are section precast concrete blocks with antique fixed
glass panes providing coloured light to the interior.
Tuesday 22 March – Conference dinner – Amex Stadium
The joint annual HEPP and APP conference dinner will be held at the American Express Community Stadium. The
American Express Community Stadium is home to Brighton & Hove Albion FC and is located next to the University of
Sussex campus. There will be a pre-dinner drinks reception from 19:00, followed by a three course dinner from
20:00. If you have registered for the dinner, a dinner ticket will be included in your registration pack – please
remember to bring this with you for entry into the Amex Stadium.

Information for presenters
Oral presentations
Presenters are asked to prepare their talks to match the allocated times which will be rigidly enforced. Presenters
should allow time for both a formal presentations and questions within the time allocated in the programme. As a
guide, contributed oral presenters should allow 12 minutes for the formal presentation and up to 3 minutes for
questions.

In timetable, you should be able to login to indico and edit your contribution: click on your contribution, 'View

We realise some people are not registered with indico, but we would encourage them to do so at
https://account.cern.ch/account/Externals. If you have any problems, contact the local organisers for help or your
talk can be provided by on USB stick.
Direct connection of personal laptops (with set up in the break prior to the corresponding session) is an acceptable,
but not preferred, alternative.
The lecture theatres are reasonably large, so speakers should use a minimum 16-point font size in PowerPoint
slides to ensure legibility.
Poster presenters
Posters will be on display throughout the conference in Dine Central, Level 1, Bramber House. There will be two
poster sessions: 15:30-16:45 on Monday 21 March and 15:15 – 16:30 on Tuesday 22 March. All posters will be
presented in both sessions.
If you are presenting a poster please ensure that you display your poster on the board number that matches your
poster number in the programme. Posters can be mounted from 12:35 on Monday 21 March and must be removed
by 16:30 on Tuesday 22 March. Fixing material will be supplied.
Posters must be no larger than A0 in size (118.9 x 84.1cm / 46.8 x 33.1 inches), in a portrait format. If your poster
does not fit within these dimensions, we cannot guarantee it will be displayed. Posters must be prepared in advance
of the conference as it may not be possible to print posters on-site.

Women in Physics in the Palestinian Territories
Kate Shaw, ICTP
This is a study in observation, and looks at the multifaceted nature of the lives of women scientists in Palestine.
Thoughts on academic opportunity and on career are presented alongside those relating to society, family and the
realities of living under occupation.
In the Palestinian Territories, more women than men study physics, yet women faculty members remain a very small
minority. At Birzeit University, outside Ramallah in the West Bank, Chair of the Physics Department Dr Wafaa Khater
offers a unique example of success to her postgraduate students. The demands of social norms, of gender bias
across the international scientific community, in addition to the challenges of pursuing science in the developing
world and under occupation render a career in physics a difficult undertaking. Yet despite these obstacles, and in an
ever changing landscape, more and more women are choosing to embark on a career in physics.
Through exploring the lives of some of these women at Birzeit University, this study goes beyond stereotypical
portrayals of Palestinian women and highlights some of the issues incumbent in their experience.
These women are exceptional. The photographs and accompanying quotations displayed here represent an attempt
to capture something of this in as balanced and fair a way as possible.

Safety and security
Fire safety
The fire alarm is a loud two-tone siren. This alarm is tested weekly on Thursday at 15:45 and the siren will sound for
no longer than 20 seconds. If the alarm sounds continuously, immediately leave the building by your closest safe
exit. Please take a moment to look around and familiarise yourself with your nearest exits should you need to
evacuate quickly.
The fire assembly point is located on the lawn area at the rear of Bramber House. Do not return to the building until
you are given permission to do so.
First aid
In the event of a serious accident you should contact University security on 3333 on any bedroom or University
phone. Tell security the problem and your location and they will respond. If necessary, they will also contact an
ambulance, wait for it to come onto campus and guide them directly to you. Please do not contact the Ambulance
Services directly as they will not know where to go and this could waste valuable time. Security will also complete
an incident/ accident form, which a Health and Safety Advisor will investigate and follow up, if necessary. If an
accident occurs off campus dial the national emergency services on 999.
Security
In case of an emergency contact the University of Sussex 24-hour Security Service by dialling 3333 from any
internal phone. From an external or mobile phone please dial (01273) 873333.
Smoking
In compliance with the current UK legislation, smoking is not permitted within all buildings and any enclosed area of
the venue.
Behaviour and conduct
Whilst on the site, all guests should show respect that the University of Sussex is a working environment. Delegates
should not venture outside the conference areas. Delegates are also asked to wear their conference badges at all
times while inside the venue. The Institute of Physics and University of Sussex reserve the right to charge in full for
loss or damage to the property.

Travel
The University campus is located in Falmer and is within easy access of Brighton, Gatwick Airport and London.

By air - from London airports
The closest airport to Brighton is London Gatwick, which is 30 minutes away by train. London Heathrow is around
two hours away by coach. European budget airlines tend to fly to Luton, Stansted and London City airports, but
please be aware that these are some distance away from Brighton, although public transport links are available.
From Gatwick Airport: take the train or the bus to Brighton. Change at Brighton for either the train, the bus or a taxi
to the University as detailed below.
From Heathrow Airport: take the train or the bus to Brighton. Change at Brighton for either the train, the bus or a taxi
to the University as detailed below.
By train
Falmer train station is directly opposite the University campus. Pedestrian access is through a subway under the
A27 - follow signs for the University of Sussex (the University of Brighton has a campus at Falmer too). Falmer is on
the line between Brighton and Lewes, about eight minutes' travel time in each direction. Four trains an hour go
there during the day time. Visitors travelling via London and the west should take a train to Brighton and change
there for Falmer. The journey time from London to Brighton is just under an hour. You can also change at Lewes for
Falmer, if you are coming from the east.

By coach/bus
National Express Coaches (www.nationalexpress.com) to Brighton depart from London Victoria Coach Station and
arrive at Pool Valley in the centre of the city. Services are every hour during the day and take about two hours.
Coaches also run to Brighton from Gatwick and Heathrow. From Pool Valley you need to walk 100 metres to the Old
Steine where you can catch a bus direct to the University (see Local buses section below), or you can take a taxi.

Local buses
Bus services run from central Brighton and from Lewes to the campus seven days a week.
The main bus service operates to the University via main routes bus 25 or 25X (other services to the University
include 23, N25, 28, 29, 29B and 84). Each bus stops at the campus entrance at Falmer House, Sussex House,
twice on the North South Road, Bramber House, at Brighthelm Porter's Lodge, Swanborough, Boiler House Hill,
Mantell Building and on Eastern Ring Road before leaving campus. Services are every 5-10 minutes Monday to
Saturday daytime (84 is Mon-Fri only) and every 30 minutes in the evenings up to approx. 23:30 (check each route
for exact times). Service N25 is a night bus which operates throughout the night, from approx 23:30 until 05:30.
Bus travel on campus and as far as Falmer Station is free of charge. For up to date times and live departures see the

By car
The University is at Falmer on the A27 between Brighton and Lewes, about four miles (six kilometres) from the
centre of Brighton. (Please follow signs for University of Sussex on the north side of the A27; the University of
Brighton also has a campus at Falmer on the south side of the A27.) Visitors from London and the north should take
the M23/A23 road towards Brighton. Before entering the centre of Brighton, join the A27 eastbound signposted
Lewes. Drivers from the east or west take the A27 direct to the University.

You can plan your route online using one of the free route planners - examples are The AA or The RAC.
Parking on campus
Delegates can park on campus in one of the dedicated car parks. A conference parking permit can be found at the
back of this handbook. All motor vehicles parked on the University campus between the hours of 09:00 – 17:00
Monday to Friday must display, on the front windscreen of their vehicle, a valid permit or pass to park or evidence of
payment of the appropriate parking charge.
Please note that there are families with children living on campus all year round. Visitors to the University travelling
by car are asked to drive with all due care and caution around campus.
Taxis
Taxis are available at both Brighton and Lewes train stations and at many places in the centre of Brighton. It is
about four miles (six kilometres) from central Brighton to the University. There is no taxi service at Falmer station
itself, it is often quicker to catch the train direct to Falmer from Brighton or Lewes.

Brighton
Brighton, one of Britain's liveliest cities, has a bohemian, artistic and eccentric atmosphere that can't be found
anywhere else in the UK. Combining the modern with the traditional, Brighton has a heritage that is rooted in the

and galleries, great shopping, stylish cafés, bars and restaurants, glittering nightlife, arts and theatre and all the fun

Car Parking Regulations:
All motor vehicles parked on the University campus between the hours of 09:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday,
must display, on the front windscreen of their vehicle, a valid permit or pass to park or evidence of payment
of the appropriate parking charge.
Temporary parking for loading/unloading is possible outside the residences and other campus buildings for
short periods of time, but once this has been accomplished vehicles should be moved to one of the
designated car parks.
Motor vehicles parked on the University campus are parked there at their owners' risk and the University
cannot accept liability for loss or damage.
