On Saturday, August 27, Debbie and I will have celebrated 480 months

of marriage (that’s 40 years). She was only 19 when we were wed. I was the

old man at 22. I had just graduated from Harding University and had secured

a job working at my home congregation as a youth minister. I made $200 a

week. Our apartment cost $200. We didn’t have a car so I rode my bicycle.

We had few bills but had it not been for the close location of my parents we

may have starved on a few occasions. We weren’t very concerned with

money and didn’t mind having a little. It meant we had to spend more time

together.

Today that congregation no longer exists, but our marriage has grown

from that modest beginning. We have been through a lot together, but “As

iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

In many ways we are better people than when we first started together.

We depend on each other more. We can read each other’s thoughts at times.

We are comfortable with each other. Perhaps too comfortable. We are not as

daring to try new things. Then, everything was new so it was normal. I’m not

saying we don’t like doing new things. We kinda like this grandparent gig.

God has certainly blessed me.

Proverbs 5:18 “May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your

youth.”

Judy Sage, Mike and Sandra Young and Steve and Mary Cardinal.

Salmos 100:1-5

Nosotros so-
