15 years ago Celina Sampaio became the secretary of the American Society. In a small room inside the A m c h a m building in Chacara Santo Antonio, Celina
took control of all the daily
business of AmSoc. From welcoming new members to the organization and handling all incoming membership payments and expenses to maintaining extensive data bases of members, donors, VIPs and friends Celina has kept AmSoc running like a well-oiled machine. Not only that, Celina has been a wonderful face to the organization and promotes AmSoc to everyone she knows. From selling ads for the monthly Forum and the annual Directory to networking and introducing business leaders and potential donors to AmSoc members, Celina has been, without a doubt, the face of AmSoc. November 21st was Celina’s last day of work in the AmSoc office as she begins a new
chapter in her life. On behalf of the Executive Committee, the Directors and all the members and friends of the American Society, I thank Celina for her invaluable contributions, spirit and passion during the past 15 years and look forward to continuing to work with her on future AmSoc projects and events. Thank you Celina!
The Community Action Committee, once again, put on a truly enviable effort in providing a day of genuine happiness for 220 needy children. If you had the honor of attending the Angel Party on November 9 then you experienced the joy of these children as they watched shows, ate fantastic comfort food (McDonalds, pizza, ice cream, cookies, chocolates), played sports (including baseball, golf and American football with pads and helmets) and finished the day with a visit with Santa Claus and receiving an enormous bag of gifts of clothing, toys and school supplies. There simply is no better way to help others and a huge thanks goes to Eileen Tasso and to all of the CAC volunteers. Super organization, super event!
Work is already underway for 2014 events, including the Children’s’ Easter party, Volunteer Day at the Consulate, 4th of July picnic and our
Annual Benefit Gala which will be held on May 9th, 2014. The Gala has emerged as a signature event with great food, dancing and a charity auction of artwork, travel packages and many other wonderful items.
Summer is here and year-end events and travel are already in full swing for many of us. These next couple of months are my favorite of the year. I look forward to seeing family and friends back home in Troy, Michigan at Christmas time, especially the grandchildren who are growing up way too fast. We plan to be back in Brazil to celebrate Reveillon with great Brazilian friends on the beach at Barra da Tijuca. January means beaches on the Litoral Norte and then comes the Carnaval holiday at the beginning of March. Can it get any better?
Don’t forget the Annual adult Christmas party on December 6th – I hope to see you there!
Finally, I want to wish all our members and friends a wonderful holiday season with friends and family, great vacations in January and a colorful Carnaval in March. See you soon….

AmSoc Travel Club - INHOTIMPlanning has started for the first trip
of the AmSoc Travel Club to INHOTIM accompanied by São Paulo sculptress Claudia Kiatake!
We are working with a local travel agent, Lynn Logullo ( AmSoc member) of Top Level Turismo on a three days and two nights trip from March 26 through March 28, 2014.
We would leave São Paulo on a flight Wednesday March 26th morning arriving in Belo Horizonte for lunch. The afternoon will include a tour of the local architecture followed by a group dinner. We will be staying two nights in a nice hotel in Belo Horizonte. On Thursday, March 27th and Friday March 28th we will be visiting INHOTIM
For those wishing to stay longer and joined by family/friends over the weekend, the travel agent can provide this option.
We are still working on the cost of the tirip. The price would include airfare,
transfers, guided tours in English, hotel room with double occupancy and some meals. A portion of the price will be used for a donation to a local school towards an art program or an arts workshop for kids that is approved by the American Society.
The highlight of the trip is of course the guided tour in English, of the world famous contemporary art museum, set in a huge botanical garden, designed by the famous Brazilian landscape designer Burle Marx. We have the added benefit of having Claudia Kiatake with us who can enhance our knowledge and appreciation of the artwork. For more information you can visit their website at www.inhotim.org.br
Since the tour is limited to 20 participants we have started to create a list of people who are interested. We will first offer these slots to AmSoc members and then open the trip up to the International Community. We

Consulate Corner: Take The Leap And Study In The United States!
What do Kofi Annan, Pope Francis, Karl Lagerfield, and Dr. Suess have in common? They all studied abroad. In 2012, U.S. consulates and embassies around the world issued more than 500,000 student visas. Today, furthering one’s education is more important than ever, with current estimates showing that Brazilian students who have earned university degrees earn nearly 3.6 times more than high school graduates. In addition, the number of jobs in Brazil that require or need English skills is also growing. With upcoming mega-events, including the World Cup and Olympics, there is a shortage of English speakers in key sectors, including tourism, transportation, and hospitality.
The United States has traditionally been the most popular study destination for Brazilian students. Last year, approximately 9,000 Brazilian students studied in the United States. In fact, Brazil was the fourteenth largest source of students heading to the United States for education or English-language training.
So, if your Brazilian friends or family have decided that studying in the United States is the right choice for them, what do they need to do? First, they must obtain a visa. The type of visa depends on the type of study they intend to pursue. The course of study and the type of school they plan to attend determine whether they will need an F-1 visa or an M-1 visa. An F visa is for all traditional learning institutions, such as universities, high schools, elementary schools, seminaries, conservatories, and language training programs. An M visa is required for vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution, other than a language-training program.
Before applying at a U.S. embassy or consulate for an F or M student
visa, the prospective student must be accepted by school approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor (SEVP) program. Once accepted, the student is enrolled in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The student then must pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee. The U.S. school will provide them with a Form I-20 to present to the consular officer at the time of the visa interview. There is one exception to studying without obtaining an M or F visa. If you enroll in a short-term English Language course, meaning that you will study less than 18 hours per week, you may be able to travel on a B1/B2 visa. This only applies if your primary purpose of travel is tourism. However, study leading to a degree or certificate is not permitted on B visa, even if it is for a short duration. For example, distance learning that requires a period of time in the United States requires an F-1 visa. Brazil´s Scots And Scots-Americans Invited To Lend A Hand To Historical Tapestry Project
Expatriate Scots and descendants of Scottish immigrants across the world, including Brazil and the United States, are being invited to take part in a project to create a Diaspora Tapestry to be unveiled during the 2014 Year of Homecoming.
Brazil and the US are among 25 countries that have been identified and the organizers in Scotland are trying to find representatives and volunteers here who can contribute to the Tapestry by documenting the contribution Scots have made to Brazil.
There are an estimated 28.9 million Americans who claim that part of their ancestry is Scottish. The strength of this connection is seen in the number of Scottish associations, clan societies, Burns societies, Highland Games and Tartan Day celebrations.
Each community will be invited to produce between five and ten panels, each measuring 50cm x 50cm.
Obvious Brazilian candidates for portrayal are Thomas Cochrane, the admiral who helped Brazil gain its independence, Charles Miller, who introduced soccer and whose father was from Glasgow, and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Brazil´s greatest 20th century poet who often referred to his Scottish ancestors.
More modern names include singer-songwriter Zélia Duncan, the actress Daniela Escobar Duncan, the first Brazilian woman guitarist Lucinha Turnbull who played with artists like Rita Lee, the founder of Alpargatas
Robert Fraser and the internationally-known scientist Warwick Estevam Kerr and the Gracie family of ju-jitsu champions
The outline of the Tapestry is being designed by Andrew Crummy, the artist behind the recently launched Great Tapestry of Scotland and Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry, an extraordinary 104-meter artwork which was embroidered by 200 volunteers from around Scotland.
It shows the early part of the Jacobite campaign of 1745 and was inspired by the Norman Bayeux Tapestry. Since its completion in 2010 it has attracted thousands of visitors as it tours the country.
The organizers believe its enormous success is due to the passion of the volunteers who created it, the astonishing quality of the artwork and embroidery, and fascinating history it depicts.
The 2014 Year of Homecoming provides the perfect arena for the assembly of the tapestry, with representatives from each community
accompanying their panels to Scotland for an extensive program of events and celebrations.
Yvonne Murphy Tapestry Coordinator said: “We want the diaspora community to tell us what the Scots did when they got to Brazil. Who were the first Scots? Important characters such as Thomas Donahue, Charlie Miller and Dr Robert Reid Kalley are already on our list but are there other stories that should be included? Andrew Crummy will
translate the information and images relating to the diaspora stories into design.
“We are also looking for people in Brazil to stitch the panels. Each panel is 50 x 50cm and we provide the traced linen, wool, reference drawing and guidelines. The stitchers need not be experts or even of Scottish descent but should have an enthusiasm for taking part in this global community project.”
The Tapestry is scheduled for completion in early 2014 and all the panels of the tapestry will be brought together in Scotland as part of Homecoming 2014
celebrations.It will become part of a range of
events throughout the year across Scotland, as well as being the focus for celebrations in its own right. After 2014, there will be an opportunity for the tapestry to travel to the diaspora communities.

Summer in São Paulo can be hot, hot, hot. This is the one time of year paulistanos actually do envy Rio its close-in beaches, especially us city-slickers without membership in a private club or access to a backyard pool. But that doesn’t mean there are no oases of soothing greens and cooling blues to be found in our urban jungle. Chill out with our summer guide to São Paulo’s best parks, public pools, and nearby beaches.
PARKS
Parque do IbirapueraNo matter where you are within
Parque do Ibirapuera’s two square km, you’re enveloped in a verdant haze, punctuated by the songs of 120 bird species, the laughter of playing children, and the rolling pop of skateboard wheels on concrete. With so much on offer within the various sections of the park, it’s hard to decide exactly what you want to do there – jog along one of the two running trails coursing through the trees, rent a bike and ride along the cycle path, take in a free yoga or capoeira session, or just grab a coconut water, sit and enjoy a view of the multitudes enjoying their own park experience. The heart-shaped park offers food for body and mind, with six strikingly designed museums and exhibition spaces, including the glass-walled Museu de Arte Moderna, the brilliant Museu Afro Brasil, and the domed Oca exhibition hall.

Villa-Lobos has been open for business for just 19 years, making it a relative newcomer to the city. Its oldest trees are now fully grown, but large swathes of unshaded grass still dominate the vista. Concrete bike and jogging tracks meander past football pitches,
ball courts and gymnastic equipment, drawing crowds of fitness freaks. A mind-boggling array of leisure pursuits can be seen in full swing at the weekend, from kite flying to remote-controlled airplanes and a dog agility arena. Take it all in on wheels by renting a bike, roller skates or even a skateboard.

Parque da Independência‘Independence or death!’ cried
Portuguese prince Dom Pedro IV who became Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro I, breaking free from Portuguese rule on this very spot in 1822. To commemorate the occasion, the ornate Museu do Ipiranga (official name: Museu Paulista da Universidade de São Paulo) was built in 1890 – as a museum, not the palace of local lore – in the style of Versailles. The museum gardens were completed in 1975, and feature topiaries of azalea and boxwood, shaded by royal palms and cypresses. The regal air of the gardens is kept real with open-air rock and jazz concerts, hosted here every couple of months.

Parque Estadual da CantareiraWith the city’s concrete high
rise buildings creeping ever further outwards, it’s refreshing to know that the sprawl is limited – to the north, at least – by a huge expanse of defiant green rising up like a barrier: the Serra da Cantareira, one of the biggest urban forests in the world. With 8,000 hectares of virgin Atlantic forest, it was the traveling salesmen of Brazil’s colonial days, trapeiros, who first gave the park its name, as cantareiras were places for storing water while resting along the trade routes between Minas Gerais and Goiás. Visitors can climb to the 1,000-metre-high viewing point at Pedra Grande and see one of the best views back over the city. A full day
should be devoted to really explore the park, which offers crystalline lakes and waterfalls for swimming, or take to one of the many hiking trails that lead through the shaded forest teeming with birds, monkeys, giant ferns and an amazing variety of native trees.

Clube-Escola PacaembuDedicated sunbathers lie out on the
colorful bleachers surrounding this Olympic-sized pool and occasionally dip in the water to cool off. To use the pool, you must join the club, but it’s free. Just take your RG or RNE (foreign ID card), proof of residence in the city, and a 2x2-inch photo. The membership card is ready in four days and you have to do a quick medical exam when you go to pick it up. After that, you’re all set to jump in!

SESCSeveral SESCs – a chain of non-
profit community centers with classes and athletic facilities – have great pools and cater to those looking to perfect their backstroke or just take a casual swim. For sunbathing and splashing, the SESC in Itaquera is a great option – it has a 50,000 sq ft, water-park-style pool with cascades, fountains, and eight water slides. SESC Belenzinho also has an outdoor pool, while the Vila Mariana, Pompéia, Pinheiros, and Consolação branches all have indoor pools. To use the aquatic areas at any SESC, you must be registered and have proof of a recent medical exam.

NEARBY BEACHES
SantosSituated barely 50 miles outside of
the city, the port town of Santos has much more to offer than its reputation as the largest shipping terminal in South America. The world’s longest landscaped oceanfront garden runs parallel to the 4-mile-long beach. The crowd on this beach usually consists of young families, boisterous teenagers, older couples and singles on the prowl. The wall of high-rise condos and hotels gives central Santos an air of Copacabana without that famous strand’s seamy (and sometimes dangerous) nighttime atmosphere. Attractions such as an aquarium and the Brazilian Coffee Museum allow for an indoor escape in case the rain rolls in.

GuarujáFarther up the shore, on the far eastern
outskirts of Santos, the municipality of Guarujá pulls in scores of townies from São Paulo on the weekends, which means increased crowds but grade-A people-watching along its chain of 23 beaches. Pitangueiras and Astúrias are two of the more popular stretches of beach; their wide, flat sands mean lots of room for frolicking among the breakers. Insiders know that Pernambuco beach – named for
a state in Brazil’s tropical northeast and punctuated with large black rocks that peak above the waterline like baby seals – has arguably the highest concentration of tall and tan and young and lovely locals on this stretch of coastline.

At 216 square miles, Ilhabela is Brazil’s largest island, rising out of the ocean like a tortoise, with a thick, dark green layer of protected Atlantic coastal forest; the island is also home to tropical fauna such as playful capuchin monkeys and portly blue manakins, a tropical bird species. Hiking trails throughout the preserve let visitors trek around the island’s peaks – the highest being 4,500-foot Pico de São Sebastião.

140 miles away from the city, Ubatuba holds the title of “Surf Capital of São Paulo,” made official by the state legislature in 2007 and backed up by at least 10 international surfing events held

The town of 78,000 people features over 80 beaches, offering an ample selection of surfing, diving, swimming and sunbathing venues. Sete Fontes, with its pink sand and impressive phalanx of boulders, and Praia do Sul, peeking out from under a canopy of oceanfront foliage are examples of more intimate beaches, and access to these beaches is restricted to boat or footpath.

Congratulations to our American Society Gala 2014 Charity recipients: Associação Criança Brasil and Lar Tia Edna.
C r i a n ç a Brasil is an educational day care for 340 small c h i l d r e n aged from 6 months to 4 years, and an after school program for 240 children from age 6 up to 15 years old. It was founded in 1987 by Liana Borges and is currently run by an active volunteer Advisory Board and Board of Directors. Criança Brasil supports 580 children in the neighborhoods of Jardim Panorama in Morumbi, Real Parque and Vila Dalva and depends on its volunteers for day-to-day expenses and on financial support for added value programs such as physiological and psychological support, computer and art programs and cultural outings.
WE would like to assist ACB in their goal to provide art, music and reading education to the children of Real Parque. With funds raised at the AmSoc Gala 2014, they will be able to send 2-3 teachers to a specialized training program to begin this process.
Lar Tia Edna is a children’s home founded over 30 years ago by Edna Deakins, an American missionary. It is home to approximately 20 children, from 5 to 20 years old. Since 1986, Henry – one of Edna’s first adoptees -- and his wife Nilma have cared for the home
and children, living on the premises. Their primary focus has always been the childrens’ education; they
work with inexhaustible enthusiasm, pursuing every opportunity for their advancement. Music plays an important role in their family life; several of the children are accomplished musicians, playing regularly in the Orquestra Pão de Açúcar.
The children who make Lar Tia Edna their home remain there until they reach adulthood, as the founder insisted that it be a family, not a foster home. The home subsists strictly on donations: the “Friends of Lar Tia Edna” organizes fundraisers, food drive during the holidays, and the local church assists the home on a regular basis. However, they are always in need of additional support.
AmSoc would like to help LTE make improvements on their home, so they would qualify for funding from the Brazillian government. Catch 22, the stiff requirements of the government are currently unaffordable for Nilma and Henry, but if not completed, they are unable to qualify for any government aid.
Both of these incredible institutions daily better the lives of close to 800 children in São Paulo´s poorest communities. Please join us at the American Society Gala in May of 2014 and help support our charities.

AmSoc And Fellowship Thanksgiving Service
For the third year the AmSoc and Fellowship Community Church (FCC) joined together to co-host a Thanksgiving service which was held Sunday November 24th. Following the service, in the spirit of a Thanksgiving tradition, guests enjoyed turkey sandwiches, cranberry sauce, desserts, refreshments and conversation.
Speaking at the service were American Society’s President, Frank Pierce; U. S. Consul General, Dennis Hankins and FCC Pastor Gavin Aiken. Music adorned the service, with performances by musicians lead by the FCC choir director, Marilyn Mangels.
During his speech, Consul General Hankins recounted President Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation which established Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Following is a brief excerpt from Lincoln’s proclamation. “The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come... I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving.”

AmSoc Sports
On October 23rd the 8th Golf Challenge for the Munro Cup took place on a beautiful golfing day at Terras de São Jose in Itu. As usual, it was a competitive but very friendly game of match play golf. 10 AmSoc twosomes squared off against 10 twosomes from the St. Andrews Society in a “Best Ball Scramble” format. The twosomes were decided
upon by the two Team´s captains, Brian Fulford of the Scots and John Kennedy of the Americans. At noon in a shotgun start, the match began and was completed by 430pm with AmSoc winning 7 matches and losing just 3.
After the matches were completed, everyone gathered in the restaurant at the golf course to enjoy the company of one another over appetizers and drinks. Before the hot dishes were served, AmSoc captain John Kennedy spoke acknowledging the Munro Cup tradition and invited Doug Munro to say a few words on the history of this American-Scottish sporting event that began with his father in 1991. Doug then awarded John the Munro Cup as this year´s champs. The overall score is 4 to 4 in Cups won. John, Brian and Judy Zanchi then gave out the awards for longest drives and closet to the pins for both the front and back nines. Lastly, a raffle was held in which certain items were won based on tickets sold during the day and cocktail hour. Among the prizes won were a night for two in the Club Room at the Marriot Renaissance Hotel, two vouchers worth R$200 each towards a Hertz Rental Car, a Pewter Whiskey Flask with engravings from the St. Andrews Golf Course, eight black leather golf gloves, and of course two bottles of Johnny Walker Black!
AmSoc Team trounces the Scots 7-2 to retain the Munro Cup in their 8th Golf Challenge
Who knows whether the AmSoc’s football players were breaking new ground or not, but at least insofar as I know, there was never a competitive game played between AmSoc and São Paulo international school. However, on October 26th AmSoc’s 8 – 10 year olds were invited to play a game against and at St. Paul’s School.
Both parents and players were made welcome by St. Paul’s, and they provided us with a feast of football. The AmSoc team, which lacked the cohesion and understanding that comes from playing together frequently, fought well, and thanks to Etienne Groom and Victor Pires who scored and Victor also hitting both the post and the bar, we gave a good account of ourselves even though losing.
We hope to have further competitive games organized this semester, which we need in order to maintain the boy’s interest in our Youth Soccer Program.

Fifteen years ago with a new strategic plan for the American Society in hand, we began our search for someone who could take on the role of office manager, with emphasis on organizing our events, special projects, fund raisers and the list goes on. During the interview process I finally came across a vibrant, dynamic, organized individual who was just what the doctor ordered; our one and only Celina Sampaio.
Celina has completed a very important phase for the American Society and on November 21st she turned over the reins of office manager to the Board and went off to a well-deserved vacation in Bahia.
We knew that AmSoc’s healthy existence depended a lot on fund-raising and advertising campaigns for sponsors. Much of it could be done by our volunteer board of governors, but a good part of it had to be spearheaded by our office manager. Celina brought to
the table significant experience acquired at the U.S. Consulate in organizing events, both local and international. She also was well-versed in finances and most importantly, had the energy and perseverance to be a driving force
with our fund-raising and sale of ads for our annual y e a r b o o k , the Forum n e w s p a p e r , and a very important and c o n s t a n t follow-up with the membership drive. Speaking of membership, Celina had a great “pitch” for newcomers
about AmSoc, and invariably they couldn’t escape her persuasive explanation.
I had many opportunities over the years to work with Celina on special projects, or twice in the role of treasurer, and especially the 4th of July celebration that we did together for more than a dozen years. Her coordinated effort with her office
assistants was impeccable, making the event everything that it should be.
Speaking of the office assistants, I never knew how she was able to find so many great interns, who spoke English and had the ability to dive into the daily chores without a hiccup. She had to interview, hire, train and supervise new interns every year.
There’s lots of war stories that could be told about these 15 years, but in the final analysis we’ll miss the melodic orchestration of what many have taken for granted – the silence of success. Thank you Celina, and success in your new business ventures and personal goals. Alan Blau, AmSoc member
