Established by Mikio Mizuta in 1965, Josai University Educational Corporation consists of three institutions: Josai University, Josai International University, and Josai Junior College. With campuses across the Greater Tokyo metropolitan area, including Sakado in Saitama Prefecture, Togane and Kamogawa in Chiba Prefecture, and Kioicho in Tokyo, we are engaged in the evolution to a new stage.

Right now, society is experiencing a period of dramatic transformation, as globalization and innovation have brought great changes in many different areas. This has created many contradictions and an endless list of problems in urgent need of solutions. They include the environment, resources, inequality, a declining birthrate and aging population, social security, education, morals, and ethnic conflict.

In 2020, the novel coronavirus pandemic has a huge impact across the entire globe, and universities have no time to waste in tackling the many challenges that this age of living with the coronavirus will bring.

When considering our path toward solutions in the face of such difficult challenges, I keep in mind both strategy and tactics, by which I mean that I grasp the overarching trends of the times, but start with the details in my response.

For strategy, or in other words, the big picture, in my view, the major keywords that reveal the major trends of the present time include globalization, consumer sovereignty, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is an industrial revolution based on IoT, big data, and AI (artificial intelligence), which follows on from the First Industrial Revolution, which saw the mechanization of factories using hydraulic power and steam engines from the end of the 18th century, the Second Industrial Revolution, which ushered in mass production using electricity based on the division of labor in the early 20th century, and the Third Industrial Revolution, which brought even more automation using electronics and information technology

from the early 1970s. So, what should we do in response to these trends of the times? For tactics, or in other words, how to address the details, the answer is not that simple. However, I believe that there are lessons to be learned from the experience and wisdom of our predecessors in readiness for our challenge of venturing into new territory. Books and other artifacts left by our ancestors could therefore prove useful. It is also important to listen to the opinions of others. The experiences of each person as an individual are trifling; all you have is the experience of one person out of a global population of 7.4 billion people.Nitobe Inazo, author of Bushido: The Soul of Japan, said that “common sense” means listening to other people’s opinions. You can learn much through interactions with people of different cultures, values, religions, and ethnicities. It is also important to learn from many different people, think for yourself and establish your own hypothesis, put your ideas into action, verify the results, and then learn from your new knowledge. I think that this process of endeavoring to grasp something is the same in both academics and sports. That is why I believe that the person you will be tomorrow will be the result of what you think and do today. If you design your own life and put your ideas into practice, the results will be your own responsibility and form your own value.

Talking with and learning from great predecessors and people with different ideas from your own and experiencing different things during your student days will be most invaluable and will have a great impact on the rest of your life.

Josai University Educational Corporation, where international students come together from around the world, is sure to offer opportunities for all kinds of encounters and learning experiences. I hope that you will foster the importance of “the ability to learn” for surviving in the 21st century at Josai.

The Founder: Mikio Mizuta

Mikio Mizuta was born in 1905 in Awa County, Chiba Prefecture. He attended Awa Junior High School and Mito High School, before entering Kyoto University, where he graduated from the Faculty of Law.

Being a young man with a burning passion for the creation of a new society, he participated in anti-war and anti-military movements during his years as a student. In 1946, he was elected to the first postwar House of Representatives. He is highly acclaimed for his commitment to the rebuilding and growth of the Japanese economy in his more than 30 years in the Diet, where served one term as Minister of International Trade and Industry and five terms as Minister of Finance.

Meanwhile, ever since his younger days working as a teacher in elementary school, Mizuta was also passionate about education. He believed that the future of his country depended on developing the talent, skills, and character of its young people. Hence his support for public funding of compulsory education and educational facilities, as well as for government aid for private schools. In April 1965, he founded Josai University, thus fulfilling his educational ideals.

Mikio Mizuta's motto throughout his life was "never lie, never deceive, never flatter." His passion was to build a brighter future for the country and a society not only through study and research, but by raising people with a great depth and breadth of character and a sense of mutual respect. This dream of Mikio Mizuta since his youth, along with Josai’s founding philosophy of “Character Building Through Learning,” is the cornerstone of the three universities.

Mizuta Collection

The Mizuta Collection consists of over 200 works, mostly ukiyo-e paintings, assembled by the politician, educationalist, and founder of Josai University Educational Corporation, Mikio Mizuta. The Mizuta family donated the collection to Josai in 1977. The collected works allow the historical progression to be traced from the early days of ukiyo-e to modern Japanese painting. The collection also includes nine works by Sharaku, including rare woodblock prints.

The Mizuta Museum of Art operates facilities at Josai University/Josai Junior College, and Josai International University, where it holds public displays of the Mizuta Collection, themed exhibitions, and other events, thus serving not only as a place of learning for students, but also as a cultural institution to be enjoyed by the local community.

“Learning is not an objective per se,” said Mikio Mizuta, at a ceremony marking the inauguration of Josai University. “Rather, it is a means to help build the character of young people. A good society can only be created by good people, so I have founded this university in the belief that it is my mission in life to prepare our future generations to meet their responsibilities to their country and their communities.”

The legacy of this mission is shared unchanged by Josai University, Josai Junior College, and Josai International University. Josai’s aim is to nurture self-reliant individuals and people who can contribute to society. In the 55 years since Josai opened its doors, while the world around us has changed greatly, our mission of character building and core educational ideals has not changed.

Main Pillars of Josai’s Educational Power (Educational Framework)As such, with the aim of realization of the school philosophy established by

the founder, namely, “Character Building Through Learning” and “Expanding the horizons of students’ capacity to serve society,” and sending out into the world the kind of people that Japan and the world need in the 21st century, Josai has established the following four “main pillars of educational power” (Framework of Education).

1 ProfessionalQualificationsJosai excels in the preparation of highly qualified professionals in

fields such as pharmacy, dietetics, social welfare, pre-school education, psychiatric social work, health care, physical therapy, certified public

curiosity, a sense of responsibility and sense of purpose, and public mindedness, all qualities required of leaders who respond to problems and make decisions.

4 Partnerships in CommunityAs an educational institution that joints the community

to meet the wishes of residents, Josai seeks to connect with society through industry-academia-government-private sector partnerships, evolve from an educational institution for students into one for the whole of society, and to contribute to systems that educate students within society and to local and regional communities as a whole.

To that end, we have developed three programs we see as unique and essential elements of our curriculum: Field Study, Project Education, and Career Preparation.

Through these programs, our students acquire hands-on working experience at Japanese and/or international companies and public organizations, learn to cooperate with a diverse range of people, and develop their practical problem-solving and communication skills, sense of purpose, and self-development skills.

accountancy, tax accountancy, general domestic certified travel supervisor's license, financial planning, and systems administration. We also develop intellectual professionals through opportunities to study and research at graduate school and in our various research institutes.

2 Core Skills and Practical CompetenciesThe education at Josai is designed to foster in our

students the maturity, sense of decorum and public mindedness demanded of them in an international society, and the basic social, practical, and communication skills they will need in their individual careers. We also encourage participation in sport and extra-curricular activities, to create well-rounded individuals and instill in them the will to develop a rich humanity and character themselves and an ambition for self-development.

3 Multi-Disciplinary and International StudiesThe curriculum at Josai is designed to develop the

ability to function effectively at the cutting edge in a range of different fields, through diverse international cultural experiences and a multi-disciplinary learning program that extends across traditional academic disciplines. In this way, we seek to foster creativity and innovation, problem-solving skills, the ability to

information are so readily accessible. This act of “learning and questioning,” that is, scholarship, is something that only humans can do. It is also something that humans enjoy doing.

It is by learning how to enjoy scholarship that we grow as people and build character. I believe that it is the role of the university to instill in its students a custom of scholarship in its broadest meaning, through your studies at university and your interactions with your friends, through international exchange and by engaging with the local community, and through extra-curricular activities.

The faculty and staff of Josai University pledge to dedicate our utmost efforts to contributing to your growth through scholarship, so you will be glad you made the decision to study at Josai University.

Josai University was established in 1965 on a vast, tranquil campus in the countryside of Sakado, Saitama Prefecture, with views of the Chichibu mountain range. It began with two faculties, Economics and Science, later adding the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Management, and Faculty of Contemporary Policy Studies.

Josai’s school philosophy is “Character Building Through Learning,” as declared by its founder, Mikio Mizuta. The Japanese word for scholarship, gakumon, consists of two characters – gaku, meaning “to learn,” and mon, meaning “to question.” The practice of learning and questioning for oneself, that is to have doubts, discover problems, and search for solutions to those problems, has taken on even greater importance in an era when knowledge and

Josai International University is not merely a place for study and research, but also a place for young people to develop depth and breadth of character, and a sense of mutual respect. Indeed, the goal is not learning itself, but to develop depth and breadth of character, as expressed by our founding spirit of “Character Building through Learning.”

I believe our students should become people who are ingrained with a “learning attitude,” enabling them to spread their wings in society from both local and global perspectives. My earnest hope is that, in their time at Josai International University, our students will find enjoyment in learning and acquiring ways of thinking that will spur innovation. Our entire faculty and staff will focus their efforts on providing an education that allows students to gain career development skills commensurate with their years of study.

Since it opened its doors in 1992, Josai International University has evolved alongside the communities of Yamatake, Togane, Kujukuri and Kamogawa in Chiba Prefecture. There are now eight undergraduate programs and six graduate research programs, as well as special preparatory courses for international students and a Senior Wellness College for adults, spanning three campuses located in Togane, Awa, and Kioicho in Tokyo. Achieving such substantial growth over the past 28 years, Josai International University now has the second largest student population among universities in Chiba Prefecture.

Our university’s parent organization, Josai University Educational Corporation, was founded by Mikio Mizuta, an educator, politician, and leader of Japan’s economic growth after the war. Mikio Mizuta’s motto in life was “Never lie, never deceive, never flatter.” In keeping with his teachings,

In predicting what society will look like twenty years from now, from a global perspective, the trend toward a borderless society will accelerate with the further advancement of information and communication technologies and transport networks, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the same time, globalization and localization will co-exist and homogenization and diversification will move forward together side-by-side. Progress in AI technology will bring dramatic changes to society and the way we work. Turning to Japan, on the foundations of Society 5.0, we will face a super-aging society, a 30% decline in the population of 18-year-olds, and the concentration of people, goods, and information in the Greater Tokyo Area, with some decentralization to certain regional cities. There is no

doubt that Japan will need to strengthen its international competitiveness and develop global human resources in many fields. It will also need to cultivate people who can identify and solve diverse regional issues and contribute to local communities.

The challenges of the future are the challenges of today. In response to the various impacts that, 20 years from now, a single set of values will not be sufficient to deal with, Josai University Educational Corporation has re-affirmed its mission to develop self-reliant individuals who have respect for diverse values, under the school philosophy of “Character Building Through Learning,” and established the following Medium-Term Plan (April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2025) as guidelines for the management and operation of the University.

Developing People who will Respond to Future Challenges and Meet the Needs of Society

Basic Directions

Josai University Educational Corporation will manage and operate the Corporation during the period of this Plan in accordance with the following basic approaches.

To establish an organization and financial foundations to support the individual universities’ sustainable development, we will strengthen our governance, organizational management, and crisis management systems. We will also maintain and further strengthen our sound

financial foundations through various measures to increase revenue and reduce expenditure.(1) Strengthen governance through the establishment and penetration of compliance systems;(2) Establish new personal evaluation systems to realize the appropriate evaluation of staff achievements

and capabilities and wages and benefits that are commensurate with that evaluation;(3) Promote information security measures and establishment of appropriate information security

systems;(4) Establish frameworks for the deployment of strategic public relations;(5) Ensure stable revenue, including payments from students, and the review and reduction of recurring

expenses.

To become a university that is trusted and chosen by stakeholders, including students and their parents and guardians, we will place learners at the center of all that we do and thoroughly educate each and every student to equip them with the ability to be self-reliant

and produce results.

Through the enhancement of educational programs that demonstrate our universities’ regional and international characteristics and the promotion of education that integrates the humanities and the sciences, we will develop people who have a basic knowledge of

data science and who can create new value in response to the demands of society while overcoming challenges.

Josai consists of three affiliated universities of liberal arts and sciences - Josai University, Josai Junior College, and Josai International University - with 19 departments in 13 undergraduate faculties, two graduate schools with 10 advanced degree programs, and two Japanese Studies Programs. It has a total enrolment of some 14,000 students on its four campuses in the Greater Tokyo metropolitan area.

With the total area of the three university campuses exceeding 648,900 m2 (about 14 times the size of Tokyo Dome), Josai has an originality and scale that sets it apart from other universities in terms of physical space and academic diversity.

In designing our faculties and departments, we looked beyond the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines, bringing our own point of view – as an international institution rooted in the local community – to bear on the latest developments in education, to produce graduates who will meet the needs of society.

Our goal is to equip our students with specialist knowledge, insight as members of society, and professional qualifications to embark on specialist careers after graduation.

Establishment of Department of Physical TherapyIn April 2012, Josai International University opened the

Faculty of Nursing, and in April 2016, the Department of Physical Therapy was established within the Faculty of Social Work Studies. Both require overseas training in the first year of the course, with the aim of developing medical professionals who have a global outlook.

The objective of the Department of Physical Therapy is to give students the knowledge of regional welfare and skills that will allow them to contribute to the development of healthcare and welfare. The kind of diverse curriculum that only a general university can offer has been prepared to equip students with the broad range of knowledge and skills required of physical therapists. For their overseas training, first-year students stay with a host family for a week while attending the California State University, Long Beach, where they receive lectures on physical therapy, undertake practical training, and tour medical facilities. In the sports therapy course, students study the basics of physical therapy for sports injuries, learning about specific injuries in individual sports and the physical therapy approaches to those injuries. The students also work with the university’s sports clubs, including the women’s ekiden (marathon relay) club and women’s softball club, from a sports science perspective.

Establishment of Data Science CourseA Data Science Course was established in Josai

University’s Faculty of Economics in April 2020 to meet the needs of society, based on the school philosophy of

“Character Building Through Learning.” The aim of this course is to equip students with “economic sense” and “data analysis skills.” The Data Science Course has as its objectives the provision of an environment for students to acquire expert knowledge and skills in AI and big data, to nurture students’ innate strengths and to provide opportunities that will spur them to act with a consciousness of their career development beyond graduation.

The Junior College as a Base CollegeAmid a declining birth rate and the increase in the

percentage of students going onto university, the purpose of vocational schools and junior (two-year) colleges is being questioned, and many of junior colleges are reorganizing into four-year institutions. Josai is bucking this trend to intentionally provide a two-year co-educational facility as a “base college.” This is because we strongly believe that we should not hinder educational diversity by concentrating on four-year universities as the only path to higher education and that there should be multiple gateways for young people who want to continue their studies.

As an institution rooted in the community, the base college has today, and will continue to have in the future, a significant role in providing an option for people who want to obtain the basic knowledge, practical skills, and wide-ranging education needed in society in two years and a place for working people to re-acquire basic academic skills.

One of the educational goals proclaimed by Josai is “the development of people who will flourish in the global arena." One of Josai’s three pillars of education is global education. Josai has signed academic exchange agreements with 201 universities in 30 countries and regions. Around 800 overseas students are studying at Josai International University, and around 400 at Josai University. In addition to short and medium-term overseas study programs, students who wish to study abroad can access a variety of programs, such as the Josai Education Abroad Program (JEAP), which provides unique opportunities for our students to attend our overseas partner universities for longer periods without having to defer their studies at Josai and delay their graduation. In the five years from AY2015 to AY2019, approximately 3,000 students from Josai International University and about 700 from Josai University went abroad to study.

International Education CenterThe International Education Center was established to

embody Josai’s philosophy of nurturing people who are able to think and act with broad global perspectives. The International Education Center is the administrative hub for all of Josai’s activities in international educational and cultural exchange. It serves a broad range of functions, including concluding partnership agreements with overseas sister schools and partner universities, coordinating student exchange programs, faculty and staff exchanges and training, and organizing international symposiums and seminars. These activities have come to fruition in the form of the Josai Education Abroad Program (JEAP).

The Japanese Studies Program offers a one-year course in Japanese language and culture for international students hoping to enter an undergraduate faculty or graduate school and for short-term international students from our partner universities. It also offers local students opportunities for cross-cultural experiences and language study on campus, which can be an invaluable experience for thinking about the world and the global community.

At Josai International University’s Faculties of Social Work Studies and Nursing, all first-year students attend a short-term training program in the United States. In AY2019, 542 undergraduate students took part in some form

of overseas training or internship. According to a survey conducted by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), the university ranked 18th among all universities nationwide for the number of students traveling abroad to study, with 772 students across the entire university doing so in AY2018.

Language Education CenterThe Language Education Center is the hub for language

education for the individual faculties and department. A system of language education tailored to the curricula of the individual faculties and departments has been developed to provide students with pathways to mastering “foreign language skills they can use” in line with their respective abilities. Josai University supports students in their endeavors to improve their language skills, including providing assistance for sitting foreign language proficiency tests and organizing a variety of speech contests. Josai International University gives students opportunities to acquire practical language and communication skills, including the English Café, where students can brush up their English while enjoying conversations with native English-speaking instructors, mixers with international students, and other various events.

Graduate School of International AdministrationJosai International University’s Graduate School of

International Administration is the humanities graduate school for the new age, bringing together professional graduate school and research graduate school programs. With an integrated curriculum encompassing from basic theory to career development and four specialized subject areas - policy studies, international studies, international corporate management, and tourism, the goal of the program is to train true global citizens who have thorough specialist knowledge and a well-rounded general education. This degree program is available in both English and Japanese.

In May 2010, Josai University Educational Corporation established a Ph.D. course in partnership with three Chinese universities - Dalian University of Technology, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, and Northeastern University.

Cooperation and Exchange with the CommunityJosai has grown as an educational institution rooted in its

community, reaching out to society and responding to public needs. We contribute to solving regional issues through collaboration with the community and local governments.

We are engaged in an Education and Research Partnership Promotion Project, which aims to dramatically enhance the quality of the university’s function as a Center of Community (COC) and its education by systematizing education and research programs to solve local issues. In 2018, Josai University participated in the Saitama Tojo and West Area Universities Platform (TJUP), the aims of which are to revitalize the region and solve the issues of the declining birthrate and aging population through stronger collaborations with universities, local governments, and companies in the area along the Tobu-Tojo and Seibu railways lines. Josai University was already involved in a variety of community cooperation initiatives, such as the Komagawa Project, a project to utilize idle land, cooperation in product development based on local specialty goods, the building of a network with local libraries, and student internships. Additionally, we have also concluded basic cooperative

agreements for partnership and collaboration with the local governments of the surrounding municipalities, such as Sakado, Moroyama, Ogose, Tsurugashima, Hidaka, and Tokigawa. The partnership with Tokigawa came out of a Food and Nutrition Project that the Department of Clinical Dietetics and Human Nutrition (Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences) conducted in cooperation with the town’s healthcare center.

Josai International University is conducting a Regional Co-Creation Project, which offers opportunities for learning through practical activities in the communities near campus, connecting students across faculty boundaries. Josai International University has concluded a partnership agreement in the tourism field with Chiba Prefecture, from which it takes on commissioned projects relating to tourism. It has also been commissioned by Chiba Prefecture to conduct vocational ability development training, and provides management consulting for small and medium enterprises in the city of Togane, in collaboration with the Togane Chamber of Commerce. The Faculty of Tourism is involved in a diverse range of initiatives for tourism development in the local municipality of Kamogawa. A main

educational institutions, health-related businesses and other entities. The Josai University and Josai Junior College Sports and Health Center was established in April 2005 to promote health and welfare in the community through sport. In April 2006, a joint project with the local community called the Josai University Senior Wellness College was launched. This project is contributing to boosting levels of activity in the local community.

Adult EducationAs a program for adult education, we offer extension

programs at our Sakado and Tokyo Kioicho campuses in a wide range of fields for the acquisition of professional qualifications, the upgrading of career skills, and self-development through cultural and leisure pursuits at our Lifelong Learning Center. These programs are open to both Josai students and members of the community. Since its foundation, Josai International University has offered community college courses to the local community, and presents lectures open to the public at a number of locations in Chiba Prefecture, as part of our outreach to the wider community. Under an agreement on recurrent education signed with Saitama Prefecture in 2007, Josai University welcomes senior citizens and retirees to attend university lectures. Josai’s wide-ranging contributions to human resources development, including for working adults, through the provision of education opportunities in various forms to society and the local community, with the participation of current students as well, could be described as a manifestation of its educational power.

pillar of this activity is the restoration and preservation of the rows of cherry trees lining the Mineoka Forest Trail that traverses the Boso Peninsula. In a collaborative project with the roadside rest area, Kamogawa Ocean Park, the Faculty is cooperating in the revitalization of the region through activities such as planning and running events. It is also involved in activities to revitalize the local area of Yomogi with a concept of local promotion from tourism perspectives. In July 2019, the university concluded a comprehensive regional partnership agreement with Minamiboso City and the Minamiboso City Tourism Association.

At the Tokyo Kioicho Campus as well, as a university rooted in the community, students, faculty, and staff work together to pursue a wide range of activities to contribute to the local community, including assisting with the Hie Shrine Festival, one of the three great festivals of Edo (Tokyo), and organizing various events in conjunction with local governments and companies.

Contributing through Health and SportWe also undertake activities that contribute to the local

community and society through healthy activities and sports. Josai International University operates the Senior Wellness College at the Chiba Togane Campus with the aim of encouraging senior citizens to maintain their physical wellbeing, as well as organizing a kendo and judo tournament for high school students and a soccer tournament for elementary school children at the Chiba Togane Campus. These are part of our wide-ranging and deep-rooted partnerships with residents, government authorities,

Rollout of Various Partnerships between Industry and Academia

Josai’s goal is to nurture our students and be of service to society by pursuing industry-academia-government-private sector collaborations through partnerships with businesses.

In December 2007, Josai International University reached an agreement with ANA Strategic Research Institute Co., Ltd., to develop partnership and collaboration. As a result, it is promoting partnerships in human resources development in a wide range of areas, including not only the airline and logistics sectors, but also other areas from hotels and tourism to regional revitalization.

We have since concluded further partnerships with Nikkatsu Corporation in June 2010, Avex Planning and Development Inc. in January 2011, and Sun Music Production Inc. in July 2013. These have resulted in diverse initiatives with the Josai International University Faculty of Media Studies. Additionally, in July 2015, we formed a partnership with Yoshinoya Holdings Co., Ltd. in the restaurant business and with Baroque Japan Limited in the fashion industry in April 2016, with such aims as the promotion of human resources development. Joint initiatives have begun between these partners and the Josai International University Faculty of Management and Information Sciences and others.

In March 2018, the Faculty of Tourism signed an agreement on comprehensive community cooperation with Tateyama Shinkin Bank and the Minamiboso Tourist Federation. Through promotion of tourism and industry in the Minamiboso area and development of human resources in tourism, we will aim for development of the local economy and the revitalization of the local community.

We are also conducting a “Hiking from the Station” initiative in collaboration with the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). This initiative encourages tourists to come to the Minamiboso area, with students touring the region’s tourism facilities in advance and planning touring courses. The students also serve as guides on the day, interacting with tourists as they guide them around the area. This project was featured in a Japan Tourism Agency publication (published March 2019) that presented examples of leading-edge practical courses for securing and developing human resources for the tourism industry through industry-academia partnerships. Students of the Faculty of Media Studies, in partnership with Isumi Railway and the municipality of Otaki in Chiba Prefecture,

produced a video promoting the Isumi Railway, which can be viewed on the Isumi Railway’s website from May 2020.

Josai University Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

A range of initiatives are being carried out at Josai University as well, with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences playing a central role.

In the School of Pharmacy, students can earn credits by undertaking internships at drug stores as an elective subject in fourth year. Under a partnership with the Japan Association of Chain Drug Stores (JACDS), students undertake work experience for five days during summer holidays at drug stores owned by JACDS member companies, where they learn the importance of the job that pharmacists do.

In February 2018, in conjunction with a medical start-up, Japan Mode, and the Mitsuiwa information system, the department launched AIHS, a dietary information service for patients taking anti-cancer drugs. The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is developing databases for foods that interact with anti-cancer drugs (causing adverse reactions) and recommended foods that do not have such interactions. This database has led to the provision of this service for patients.

Further, in June 2020, it signed a comprehensive collaboration agreement with Seki Yakuhin Co., Ltd., which operates drug stores mainly in Saitama Prefecture. The two parties will cooperate in academic research and undertake joint projects for their mutual development, regional promotion, and educational promotion. To mark the agreement, Seki Yakuhin established a special scholarship scheme for students in the Faculty’s School of Pharmacy.

The Department of Clinical Dietetics and Human Nutrition has created a wide variety of products in collaboration with businesses. Together with a paste processing company, it developed “Tane Made Yuzu Ran Jelly,” a jelly made by turning whole yuzu citrus fruit, a specialty crop of the area, into a paste, including the peel and seeds. As well as being distributed by a processed food manufacturer, this product was also sold as a gift product at a local department store in a set with yuzu pound cake and fruit jelly. The men’s ekiden (marathon relay) club, which has run in the Hakone Ekiden 15 times, developed a body-care drink called “Runshot” with Nitta Gelatin Inc. The product is sold through Nitta Gelatin’s mail order shopping subsidiary company.

Josai is placing efforts into the expansion of its campuses with the aims of the further enhancement of its educational facilities and the strengthening of its international exchange and information communication functions.

Completion of Tokyo Kioicho Campus Building No. 3The Tokyo Kioicho Campus in central Tokyo opened

in 2005 as a link between the Sakado Campus of Josai University and Josai Junior College and the Chiba Togane and Awa campuses of Josai International University. Undergraduates and graduate students from all three schools take courses offered on this campus located in the middle of the city. With the establishment of the Placement Center, Josai International Center for the Promotion of Arts and Sciences, and the Lifelong Learning Center, Kioicho Campus provides students with wide-ranging support for research activities, international exchange, and career placement, as well as actively communicating information through various symposia and seminars.

In April 2013, Building No. 3 was completed on the Tokyo Kioicho Campus, with the aim of developing internationally minded people who can solve problems with broad knowledge and deep specialization, which is one of Josai’s major undertakings. The construction of Building No. 3 to enhance the campus in the Kioicho area, Japan’s center of politics, culture, and global information, was an important theme for the achievement of the goals of Josai University Educational Corporation’s Mid-Term Plan.

The building has five floors above ground and one basement, with a total floor area of approx. 7,700 m2. It was completed on April 12, 2013. Apart from its complement of classrooms and studios, the building has a conference room on the fifth floor equipped for real-time, online international conferences and global networking. The basement houses Oishi Fossil Gallery, which is open to the local community and the general public as well as for workshops for children. In addition to its earthquake-resistant engineering, the building was designed to function as a disaster-readiness location for students and local residents in the event of a disaster, with a generator and other equipment installed.

A new Building No. 2 (tentative name) will also be built on the Tokyo Kioicho Campus, with completion scheduled for February 2022. This building will have a floor area of approximately 2,000 m2 on five above-ground floors. As well as ten classrooms and a spacious student lounge on the first floor, the new building will also feature a communication space for students on an upper floor. The inclusion of a copse of trees and an open rooftop garden is in consideration of greenification of the campus.

Development of Sakado Campus continues with a new multiplex building, Building No. 23 (tentative name) and other construction.

As a project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the university, construction of the Mizuta Memorial Hall, which houses the Founder’s Memorial Exhibition Room, and the new Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Building were completed in March 2017. Building No. 22, which includes practical training rooms for the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, was completed in March 2019 on the east side of the Mizuta Memorial Library. In addition, in June 2020, construction started on Building No. 23 (tentative name), which will become the new face of Josai University, with the aim of completion in the spring of 2022.

The Mizuta Memorial Hall, with its elegant arched roof, is a two-story building with a total floor area of approximately 1,800 m2. In addition to the Founder’s Memorial Exhibition Room, this building also holds an auditorium and multipurpose space, and is the location of the alumni association’s secretariat. The new Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Building has nine floors above ground and one basement, with a total floor area of approximately 12,000 m2. It is located on the southeast edge of the campus and serves as a landmark for the campus. On the laboratory floor, there are no walls between laboratories, a novel design that encourages interaction among students and faculty.

Building No. 22 has seven floors above ground and a floor area of approximately 8,000 m2. The front of the building has a tower-like design, which, combined with the high-ceilinged atrium space of the lobby, symbolizes a sacred space of learning.

The new multiplex building, Building No. 23 (tentative name), will take over the functions of the existing Buildings No. 1, 2, and 4 and the Experimental Laboratory Center, will have a total floor area of approximately 21,000 m2 over seven floors. The “face of the university” leading from the university’s main entrance to Seiko Kaikan, the symbol of the campus, will undergo a major transformation. The entire space of the first floor will be open on all four sides, giving the building the function of a “hub” for exchanges among students, faculty and staff, and the local community. The Josai Hub, a single connected space under large eaves, will offer a wide variety of study spaces, including active learning spaces, presentation spaces, a café, workshop, and group study spaces, and a place for students to be on campus.

The entrance to the campus will have no gates, with the aim of being a university that is literally open to the local community.

Josai also focuses on culture and sporting activities. In the area of sport, Josai University’s men’s and women’s ekiden (marathon relay) clubs, track and field club, men’s and women’s softball teams, regulation baseball club, and soccer club are among the university’s most successful teams. Josai International University has a successful regulation baseball club, rubber-ball baseball club, women’s ekiden (marathon relay) club, soccer club, women’s softball club, kendo club, and judo club, among others. The development of a range of facilities is supporting our students and athletes.

Mizuta Museum of Art, Josai UniversityThe Mizuta Museum of Art at Josai University, established in 1979, re-opened on December 9, 2011 with a fresh, new look in a stand-alone building. This renewal project commemorated the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Josai University Educational Corporation. The two-story building has three galleries with a total floor area of 670 m2 and exhibits the permanent collection of the university’s ukiyo-e woodblock prints. It also serves as a place for the communication of various information rooted in the community, including the introduction of the university, various special themed exhibitions, and exhibitions of the culture of Sakado and Saitama Prefecture, where the university is located.

PRINCE TAKAMADO MEMORIAL SPORTS PARKAs part of the project undertaken to mark the 20th anniversary of Josai International University, a sports park equipped with a regulation soccer pitch was completed on May 22, 2012 next to the university’s Chiba Togane Campus. The park was named the Prince Takamado Memorial Sports Park to commemorate the achievements of His Imperial Highness the Prince Takamado, who passed away in 2002, in promoting sport and international exchange, and to pass his will on to future generations. Covering an area of 33,000 m2, the park includes facilities such as regulation soccer pitch that can be used for official matches, a clubhouse, and a multi-purpose lawn plaza. The park has lights for night use and seating for spectators. The Prince Takamado Memorial Sports Park has been used as a venue for activities to deepen international goodwill and

exchange through sport, as well as for the promotion of sport in the local community, such as youth development activities.

JOSAI SPORTS FIELDDevelopment of the Josai Sports Field is scheduled for completion near the Sakado Campus in September 2020. The 55,500 m2 area includes two artificial turf soccer pitches and a softball ground, as well as a 1-km up-down running course. Josai University plans to establish a women’s soccer club in AY2021, so there is an expectation that the Josai Sports Field will become the home of “Josai, the soccer university.”A regulation baseball ground underwent renovations to lay the artificial turf with the same specifications as that used at Meiji Jingu Stadium.
