1. Words of Wisdom
A message from the Editor:
Welcome to the September Edition of ‘The PipeLine’. This summer’s cornucopia of organ recitals and oth-
er musical events, is coming to a close. However, there is still a lot to look forward to in our approach to
Autumn. The YDOA website has been undergoing a thorough over-haul in the last few weeks, thanks to
the sterling work of John Jones. All of the ‘Organ of the Month’ instruments will eventually be included on
the website and it is hoped that an archive of ‘The PipeLine’ will also be made available for members,
online. More about this work can be found in the article on page 8.
September’s Event promises to be an action packed day! We will be visiting four organs in the
Knaresborough area and there should be an instrument to suit everyone! More details can be found on
page 5.
** DIARY DATES** Upcoming Association Events 2013

October Saturday 26th (2:30pm) Annual Recital followed by AGM and Tea

or additional information about these events.

Note: Some of these events are to be confirmed. Whilst the association and its officers will do their best to keep to these sometimes the best laid
plans can be frustrated by factors outside their control! Any changes will be notified in the Pipeline, on the association website and by email.

2. Looking Back
Our August meeting took place in Leeds and gave us the opportunity to visit two instru-
ments. Maximillian Elliott, Editor, writes:
This event was kindly organised by Bob Firth, Treasurer. Our first stop was St Paul’s, Ireland
Wood, where there is a 3 rank extension organ. Bob had been organist of the church for a
short period in the 1970s. Members soon got to grips with the instrument and a whole
range of music was performed. Renate Sangwine was pleasantly surprised to find that an
entirely unenclosed instrument could play Guilmant! The following pieces were played by
the members present:
The next stop on our Leeds Adventure was at the Church of St Chad’s, Far Headingley, were
there is a 3 manual Harrison and Harrison organ. Richard Wilson (Organist of St Chad’s)
showed us great hospitality and the cups of tea were greatly appreciated. Our numbers
had swelled by this point from which the local fish and chip shop benefited. The following
pieces were played by the members present:

6. Articles
The Editor, Maximillian Elliott, writes about the past, present and future of the YDOA.
Since taking over as Editor of The PipeLine in June 2013, one of my main priorities has been to include more articles about the history of organs, organists, musicians and music in York. Most of our YDOA members will know that the organ is my passion, but, few will realise that my bachelor’s degree was, actually, in Historical Archaeology. When it comes to the organ, therefore, lost instruments are just as interesting for me, as current ones. It has been my goal, therefore, to chart the history of York’s organs, through the “Organ of the Month” Series. This is now an established feature of The PipeLine and thanks to John Jones, every organ will soon feature on the website as well. The series will hopefully be complete by 2018/19, and will have featured over 70 organs from the city centre of York.
Alongside the “Organ of the Month” Series, a range of articles will be produced for The PipeLine, by various members of the association, relating to York-organ history. This series will be called the “Vox Historica” Series and all members are invited to research articles for this section. For example, in the coming months, articles will appear, under the “Vox Historica” label, re-garding:
1) Arthur Sample (York’s first and only Civic Organist)
2) The Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition Organ Recitals 1879
3) The York Diocesan Choral Association
4) The Presidents of the YDOA
Articles from the “Vox Historica” Series will not appear in every edition. However, it is hoped that a sizeable number will ap-pear every year under this label. It is my aspiration that this series of articles will be a starting platform for many other subse-quent series. Members are warmly invited to establish a series of articles about any organ-related matter of their choosing, for example: organ building, accompaniment, etc... In recent years, articles for The PipeLine have been somewhat scarce. By es-tablishing a regular set of series, it is my hope that the article section of The Pipeline will prosper. My contribution will be through history!
In conjunction with these articles, my ambition is to establish an archive for the York and District Organists’ Association. We are extremely fortunate, as an association, to possess a vast amount of archival material, such as membership lists (from our founding to the present day). From this list, it should also be possible to establish a list of Presidents of the YDOA. Any infor-mation about the history of the YDOA or York-organs in general, will be greatly received for the archive. Past editions of The PipeLine will be hard bound (by year) and stored in the archive. The Editor has copies of The Pipeline from 2006 to the present day, but would greatly appreciate more copies, if anyone has any available. Some people might believe that a focus upon histo-ry is not the best way for the association to move forward. However, it is my belief (as the youngest member of the associa-tion) that the best way to safeguard the future of the YDOA is by securing its past!

7. Organ of the Month
'The Organ of the Month' comprises of a series of articles looking at different local instruments, alpha-
betically and, this month, will take a look at the organ located in:
FACT FILE AT A GLANCE!
Builder: Abbott and Smith
Year: Unknown
2 manuals and pedals
Maximillian Elliott (The PipeLine Editor)
writes:
The former organ in the Baptist Church on Priory
Street, until recently, was an enigma. There are three
conflicting specifications available on the NPOR and
they don’t even agree on a builder! Therefore, Nigel
Holdsworth and I, set out to find the truth!
We found out that none of the three specifications
represented the final organ at the Baptist Church.
Those organs may have been in the building at an
earlier date, but were certainly not the last pipe organ
in that building. We were able to ascertain this
information because, to our amazement, the console
was still attached to the façade, despite the organ
being removed in the 1990s.
Not much is left of the instrument, most of its inside
has been converted into storage space, using bits of
the old soundboards, swell box and other pieces of
wood to make shelving. All of the valuable parts of the
organ had been stripped out, including all of its
pneumatic action. However, the main reservoir is still
there and a couple of bourdon pipes were scattered
on the floor.

The original Abbot and Smith push-button blower switch and Rushworth & Dreaper maintenance label
are on the right hand side of the console. The solid oak bench would appear to also be original.
Above the book-desk, a plaque reads:
Presented as a gift to the church by two members Mr and Mrs J C Dawson. Dedicated to the glory of God
at a service on Friday September 29th 1967.

Some Jokes:
St Peter is checking ID's at the Pearly Gates, and first comes a Texan. "Tell me, what have you done in
life?" says St. Peter. The Texan says, "Well, I struck oil, so I became rich, but I didn't sit on my laurels--I
divided all my money among my entire family in my will, so our descendants are all set for about three
generations." St. Peter says, "That's quite something. Come on in. Next!" The second guy in line has been
listening, so he says, "I struck it big in the stock market, but I didn't selfishly just provide for my own like
that Texan guy. I donated five million to Save the Children." "Wonderful!" says Saint Peter. "Come in.
Who's next?" The third guy has been listening, and says timidly with a downcast look, "Well, I only made
five thousand dollars in my entire lifetime." "Heavens!" says St. Peter. "What instrument did you play?
