Day One Journaling in Mathematics

Page 3: Journaling in mathematics math summer institute 2011

A math journal is one of the best ways to introduce writing into your math class.

It helps students stretch their thinking and make sense of problems.

When children write in their math journals, they examine, express and keep track of their reasoning.

Why Use Math Journals?

Page 4: Journaling in mathematics math summer institute 2011

Help students become aware of what they do and do not know.

o Connect prior knowledge with what the student is studying.  o Give the student a chance to reflect on what is known.o Allow the student to construct mathematics for him or herself.

Help teachers answer specific questions.

o Can the student explain concepts?  o Does the student use communication skills effectively?  o Does the student use appropriate mathematical language?

Writing Should:

Writing about your thinking is challenging. It is best to start with familiar open-ended prompts such as:

I see... I think... This reminds me of...

Where to Begin…

Right now I feel…

Write a question that looms large in your mind right now.

One thing I would like to accomplish today is…

Your Turn… Choose one of the following to write about in your journal.

Journals as an Entry SlipRepresenting on a Thinking Sheet

Representation

Page 13: Journaling in mathematics math summer institute 2011

1. What does choice offer for students? 2. How does the thinking sheet help students?

Teachers? 3. Do you think that it is important to have

rubric on the thinking sheet? Why or why not? 4. How can a picture bring on so much

discussion? 5. What formal math language was used? Math

notation? 6. What could you do in your lesson if this was

just an opening ?

Joseph and Justina noticed there were chickens and goats running around the hills behind their house. Joseph said, “There are 18 animals.” Justina said, “ Yes, and they have 52 legs in all.” How many of each animal were there?

What was going through your mind when you solved the problem?

(to reveal the reasoning process) What was interesting? (to see their curiosity) What helped you find the solution? (to articulate strategic thinking, to find patterns, to

acknowledge the thinking of others) What are you wondering? ( to inspire further investigations, to perceive inquiry

as an ongoing process)

Your turn…

Organization of Math Journals

There are many ways to organize math journals and math writing.

You must decide what would be best for you and the students in your class.
