Signage

A selection of road signs found on the route to Great Yarmouth

In the early 60’s a whole new set of signage was introduced to UK roads. A custom typeface was designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, specifically to increase legibility while driving. Do you know its name?

Rotations

Circumference of tire is Pi x D (3.14*2ft)

(((3.14*2ft = 6.28 ft

From this we can understand that each wheel covers 6.28 ft with every rotation.

(((((1 mile = 5280 ft(55*5280 ft = 290,400 ft

290,400/6.28 = 46,242

55 miles are traveled by car in order to get from Daventry to Nottingham. We put massive trust in vehicles, often moving at tremendous speeds, exposing our wheels to a lot of stress. But how much?

The average car wheel is about 24 inches (2 ft) in diameter, which allows us to work out the average amount of revolutions each wheel makes on the journey.

So an average car tire makes 46,242 revolutions during the journey from Daventry to Nottingham. The average tire lasts 45,000 miles. I’ll let you work the revolutions out for that one...

Take the next...

These days we take left and right for granted. But little do we take into account how many times we make the decision to take a certain direction on any given journey. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes not so much.
