JOYFUL GIFT Your weekly newsletter from the Catholic English Mass in Funchal
Welcome to the Chapel of Penha de França,
founded by António Dantas in 1622 and built on a “penha” or peak, by the sea. This soon became so famous a shrine that people came to it on pilgrimage from all parts of the Island, and in 1721 the chapel was restored and enlarged. When the Diocese of Funchal took possession of the chapel it was used for the bishops as a Country House or Summer Residence for many years. In the meantime, the Franciscans had been coming to Madeira to carry out apostolic duties however it was only in 1935, on Easter Sunday, that they founded the Franciscan
Residence of Our Lady of Penha de França, at the request of Bishop D. António Ribeiro.
The English Mass is a tradition that dates back to 1966, when Fr Rafael Andrade, having just returned from his first visit to England, complied with the Bishop´s request to start an English celebration. Fr Rafael presided this mass for over 30 years, when he had to stop in 1999 due to overlapping duties. For eight years there was no Mass in English in Madeira, until it began again on the first Sunday of Lent in 2007.
Have a lovely time in Madeira Island and we hope to receive your visit again soon!
Thoughts on the Scripture Readings Brought to you by Chris Oliver, UK
23rd October – 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
After the 10 Commandments,
which are rather general, the Lord gave detailed rules for living. This
mini-covenant contained practical laws and punishments, as we can see from today’s reading. A covenant is a formal contract made with religious ritual. In this case a treaty in which the Lord promises favour and the people agree to undertake certain obligations. Moses sprinkled blood on the people to seal this covenant with the Lord. They then celebrated a sacrificial meal, eating and drinking in the Lord’s presence to confirm that the people now belonged to the family of the Lord.
The second reading is from our earliest Christian document. Paul concludes his address to the
Thessalonians with fulsome praise for them. Especially for their imitation of Christ, through which they share in his Cross and in the Spirit of the risen Lord.
In the Gospel it is now the turn of the Pharisees to test Jesus. But they fare no better than the Sadducees last week. Again Jesus shows that he is the authoritative interpreter of the Jewish Scriptures. Even the detailed rules given to Moses can be summed up in the requirement to love God and your neighbour.

From My Heart to Your Heart Brought to you by Father Bernardino, Madeira
Do You Know Dorothy Day?
If you don´t, please open the
internet and touch, heart to heart, the most important figure of the Catholic Church in America on the XX century. Even
if she is not very well known, the Holy Father already started the process of her canonization. Among many other things she is known by being the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement.
On one occasion a woman came in and donated a diamond ring to the Catholic Worker. Her coworkers wondered what Dorothy would do with it. If she asked one of them to take it to a diamond merchant and sell it, it would buy a month’s worth of rice and other food items for a poor family.
That afternoon, however, Dorothy gave the diamond ring to an old woman who lived alone and often came to Dorothy for meals.
“That ring would have paid her rent for the better part of a year”, someone protested.
Dorothy replied that the woman had her dignity. So she could sell it if she liked and spend the
money for rent, a trip to Bahamas, or keep the ring to admire.
“Do you suppose,” Dorothy asked, “God created diamonds only for the rich?”
Dorothy Day was one of the prophets of her day. Her vision allowed her to see all human beings as equal - no one distinguishable from another.
She recognized, like Mother Teresa did, the mark of the children of God in everyone, in the same way Jesus recognized God's child in the Canaanite woman who belonged to a race inimical to the Jews. (Math 15, 21-28)

Portuguese Treat To try at home – make it & enjoy it!
INGREDIENTS
2 packages of double cream 10 sheets of flavorless gelatin 1 can of condensed milk 4 cups of seedless cherries Bit of sugar 2dl of water
Pitanga Pudding
Pitanga is known by several names, such as Brazilian Cherry, Surinam
Cherry or even Cayenne Cherry. It is quite common to find these delicious little things in many fruit gardens in Madeira. A suggestion to use this fruit is by making a pudding or jam. It is fresh, sweet and very reminiscent of childhood days.
STEP BY STEP
Wash the cherries, remove the seed and use a food mill to sieve them (save one cup for the syrup).
Whip the cream together with the condensed milk, and dissolve the gelatin in a bit of warm water. Mix all the ingredients well and then put in a pudding serving plate and put it in the refrigerator.
You can also make a syrup to serve on top after it has solidified. Take the rest of the cherries to a pan together with the sugar and 2dl of water. Leave it to boil for some minutes. Leave it to cool down and serve on top of the pudding.

Rio’s Redeemer Statue turns 80
Christ the Redeemer, the 125-foot, 699-ton, statue
that looks down on Rio de Janeiro from atop Corcovado Mountain has just "celebrated" its 80th birthday.
The famous statue officially became part of the Brazilian landscape on Oct. 12, 1931. Built by architect Heitor da Silva Costa and French/Polish sculptor Paul Landowski, the statue cost $250,000 in 1931 (estimated to be $3 million today). It was funded by donations from residents of what the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, called "the world's most beautiful city."
Paes said the statue and its well-recognized outstretched arms are "how we welcome those who come visit us." Rio locals and tourists are joining in the birthday celebration, holding concerts and vigils in honor of their local landmark, considered since 2007 a seventh Wonder of the Modern World. Even Rio Archbishop Orani João Tempesta joined in, leading a special ceremony at the foot of the statue to commemorate the milestone.
At the statue's feet is a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Apparition, which can accommodate some 100 visitors. Blessed John Paul II blessed Rio from the site in 1980, and Benedict XVI is scheduled to visit in 2013 for the events of the 27th World Youth Day.
Newly renovated in 2000, the site is ready for the countless young visitors who will no doubt utilize its internal escalators, walkways and elevators to ascend to what will likely be one of the best views a World Youth Day city has ever offered its pilgrim guests.

Our Lush & Vibrant Forest Brought to you by Madeira Tourism
This past week we celebrated Madeira Nature Festival, so it
was only right to launch a new feature showing a bit of our nature – its species, curiosities, and even levada walks. Today we show you such a magical tree worth belonging to a Harry Potter movie. This tree is the centenary Til (Ocotea foetens). It is endemic of the Macaronesia. It appears in Madeira Island between 400 and 1400 meters height and reaches a maximum of 40 meters high. Most of them are previous to the discovery of Madeira island in the XV century.
You can find this species in Fanal. There is a trail on the way to Paul da Serra plateau called Vereda do Fanal. It is about four hours walking and is included in an area of Laurissilva Forest, classified as a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO.
