To provide a mutually supportive

and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop

oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth

"A sharp tongue is the only edged tool that grows keener with constant use" Washington Irving

President Speak Toastmasters, as we know is an international organization that promotes speaking, listening and leadership skills. We learn from each other by active listening and giving each other feedback based on “commend, recommend and commend” approach. At Toastmasters we don’t just learn but also experience the joy of speaking and listening. At JPKU Toastmasters, the emphasis is on helping each other in overcoming our inhibitions to speak, listen and lead. Today, I can proudly say that the enthusiasm and spirit with which all of us at JPKU celebrate the joy of being a Toastmaster is simply stupendous. We need to keep up the good work...

I still remember the day when I was one of the three students chosen by my school to represent it in a speech competition. You can all imagine the hours that would have gone in, to prepare the speech and rehearse its delivery. All was well set and on the day of the contest when my name was called and I walked up to the stage. Just the sight of over three hundred people sitting in the audience made me freeze. Words did not come out of my mouth. Yes, I am talking of a situation where some of us are not comfortable while interacting with people or speaking before them. This is where JPKU Toastmasters Club helped me overcome my fears and over a period of time, I become a better and a confident public speaker. To be a good public speaker is not just about having the knowledge base but also being able to put forth those ideas using appropriate words and delivery techniques. I wish all at JPKU all the very best. May this club scale even greater heights in the days to come.

How many seeds are there in an apple? Deepak Justin, D.T.M.

Lt. Governor—Marketing, District 82

"To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others”

Anthony Robbins

How many seeds are there in an apple…? It’s a simple thought that has always perplexed me… Can I look at the question logically and say that there are only two seeds in an apple which appears to be common sense. Or can I look at the question from a superior standpoint and say, “Now if one apple has two seeds and those two seeds are planted then we have two trees, and those two trees produce hundreds of apples. Now those hundreds of apples have hundreds of seeds and if they are in turn planted, then we have thousands of trees and those thousands of trees produce thousands of apples and if we were to see as to how many seeds are there in those thousands of trees we would be arriving at a million. In a world of probabilities, some look at limitations while others look at possibilities. Gordon Cates is an ordinary human like you and me. But he has an extraordinary passion. He loves snakes. The venomous variety. For 22 years, he has been with the most exotic and venomous of reptiles. Gordon personally believes that among all the reptiles, snakes are the most dangerous. One fine day Gordon decided to do the impossible. He decided to get a few king cobras into an arena, snakes that were not even defanged, and challenged himself that he would kiss them on the hood. The stage was set for what could result in the kiss of death if something went wrong. The camera was rolling. A live audience came to witness what they could never possibly imagine. The arena was smaller than the size of a typical room. The first snake was brought on to the center-stage. A huge 8 footer. Gordon watched carefully as the 8 footer raised its hood to about 3 feet high. Gordon moved his hand to and fro as the beast focussed all its attention to the movement of the hand. As the beast’s attention was totally glued towards Gordon’s hand, he stooped and kissed it on the head.

The second king cobra was brought. And a third and a fourth. And Gordon went on with un-diminishing enthusiasm kissing them one by one in a dance of death. Then came the fifth. The sixth. The seventh. The eighth. The ninth. And the tenth. After a few minutes he found himself hyperventilating, and grasping for breath. But he was still not satisfied. He could do one more. And that had to be the biggest. A few ushers walked into the arena, with a huge trunk, in which was a sixteen foot king cobra. With his expertise Gordon knew that the venom of this cobra could kill a bull elephant in one hiss. But he de-cided to take it head on. For minutes he struggled to maneuver the huge beast, but with focus and tact Gordon managed to kiss the 16 foot king cobra on its hood and thus breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for kissing eleven King Cobras at one stretch without a break. The previous record for kissing the maximum number of King Cobras on the hood was held by Gordon himself. What is it that drives people like Gordon Cates to do the impossible? In a world of probabilities, some look at limitations while others look at possibilities. Some look at the half glass empty while others see the half glass full. Some look at a frown as a smile turned downwards, while others see a smile as a frown turned downwards. Some look at an adversity in every opportunity, while others see an opportunity in every adversity. Some look at two seeds in an apple while others look at a seed with endless possibilities. How many seeds in an apple do you see?

From birth till death, every living being feels the need to communicate. Over the period of evolution, various means of communication have been developed by practically all animals and Homo sapiens, but not alike. So what is it that renders us apart from the other creatures? “Language”.

I am indeed talking about communication skills. Most of us already know the im-perative need for good communication skills; in this message, I only intend to Ctrl+B their ubiquitous essence! Having lived in various parts of the country, I have had the opportunity to interact with people from various walks of life and I have seen instances of excellent communication and as well as those with absolute lack of it. In today’s converging global markets where “survival of the fittest” has become a norm, it is not just important to be good at what you do; it is also critical to be able to put forth your ideas effectively. Most successful leaders who have marked the face of history were / are all brilliant orators. Mahatma Gandhi, Adolf Hitler and in more recent times Barack Obama, are all examples worth mentioning. A huge fan following across generations is a testimonial of their immaculate ability to connect with their audience. A lot of us doubt our capabilities and lack confidence when it comes to communication skills. The good part, however, is (or at least I believe) that good communication skills can be acquired. We too can speak articulately, like the student who always got the best speaker’s award in school and who we always admired. With the power of Toastmasters on our side, YES WE CAN... Shraddha Nakra

The life of Lisa Bishop, a resident of the Brunswick town of southwestern Maine,

U.S.A., has changed dramatically ever since she joined Toastmasters. Lisa suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. After

mustering the courage for along time, she finally decided to attend a Toastmasters session. However, in just a few short months since joining, she’s

found the strength to stand up to her fears and discover a confidence she never thought possible. Lisa joined in Jan 2006 and since then has blossomed through her Toastmasters involvement. She has almost completed all of the required speeches for her Competent Communicator award and has joined another Toastmaster club, Mainely Speakers. Both clubs recently named her vice

president of public relations.

Rithika Rambabu is a young and cheerful Toastmaster at the Jain Toastmasters Club in Bangalore. All of 19 years of age, life has not been an easy journey for her since childhood. At the age of 8, she was diagnosed with diabetes. She had to be

admitted in coma because of low blood sugar when she was in Std. 10th. And nothing could have been more unfortunate for her than being diagnosed with tu-

mor last year. Yet, Rithika is one IRON LADY whose enthusiasm & will power is worth admiring. She has recently completed her CC & CL, and is determined to achieve many more milestones at Toastmasters. She lives her life to the fullest,

and even runs a school for orphan girls, called S.O.S. or Save Our Souls.

What is your Name Again?

You're at a Toastmasters meeting, engaged in a discussion with a prospective member, when you suddenly panic "What is this person's name"? Nearly everyone enjoys the sound of their name, which is why remembering names is such a powerful tool for establishing important relationships. Try these tips for remembering the name you were just told 30 seconds ago! Give your full attention to the introduction. Don't get caught shaking the hand of a new acquaintance while keeping one eye on the waiter walking away with the last of the hors d'oeuvres! Make the person feel important by making the introduction important to you. Listen Carefully and repeat the name immediately. Verbal repetition helps reinforce a new name in your memory and gives you the valuable opportunity to rehearse or double-check difficult pronunciations. Think of someone with the same name. A favourite relative, your best friend or a high school sweetheart could come in handy if they share the name of a new acquaintance. Form an immediate association with the name and the person's outstanding feature or trait. Whether it's flattering or not, the first association you make with a person is the best tool you can use for remembering the person's name. Hair colour, tone of voice, style of clothing or even height can all be effective associations.

“Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know”

Jim Rohn

Tip-Tap-Toe Tips for Toastmasters

Use the name frequently during your conversation to test your memory and establish closer ties with an individual. "I couldn't agree with you more, Joe" or "You know, Sue, I heard a funny story about that", are both examples of individualized conversation that sounds friendly, but isn't forced. If you forget the name or didn't hear it the first time, don't fake it... ASK! Most people would prefer to repeat their name rather than correct a wrong guess. Politely asking for a reminder may be awkward, but it will be appreciated. If the name is particularly difficult to retain or pronounce, ask for a spelling. Don't make excuses. No one wants to hear "I'm terrible with names" or "I meet so many people in a day". Excuses like these can make the most important person feel insignificant in your eyes. Full attention during new introductions is the key to keeping names from slipping your mind. Take the time to fully focus on anyone you're about to meet. The time to recognize an important contact is before you forget the name, not afterwards!

Mark That Speech! The Greatest Speeches of our Times

“I Have a Dream”

When & Where? 28 August, 1963; Washington D.C.

Who? Martin Luther King, Jr.

Critique “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most memorable speeches of all time. Much of the greatness of this speech is tied to its historical context, but the 3 key lessons in speech delivery that can be extracted from this speech are: • Emphasize Phrases by Repeating at the Beginning of Sentences: “I have a dream” is

repeated in eight successive sentences, and is one of the most often cited examples of anaphora in modern rhetoric.

• Utilize Appropriate Quotations or Allusions: “Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for

freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” • Use Metaphors to Highlight Contrasting Concepts: “joyous daybreak to end the long night

of their captivity”, “sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.”

"Conversation isn't just crossfire where you shoot and get shot at! Where you've got to duck for your life and aim to kill! Words aren't only bombs and bullets -- no, they're little gifts, containing meanings!”

Philip Roth

Richa Aggarwal, an aspiring Chartered Accountant (she is in fact only 5 months away from completing her CA) joined JPKU Toastmasters last year and since then she has never looked back. Richa loves dancing, and eating is the only guilty pleasure that she has. Her mantra in life is to enjoy whatever she does and have fun all along. She believes that life is like a car ,”sometimes it runs smoothly, other times you get a flat tire, and yet other times, you get caught speeding”. And so we all should drive “our lives” carefully with full control on the steering, Richa advocates.

Toastmasters is a forum that lets you speak your heart and mind out. Do you agree? To a large extent, yes. To me, it is the best place to make mistakes, to learn and to improve. And have fun simultaneously. I had not even in my dreams ever thought of a day when I would be able to give 10 minute long speeches in front of a packed room. But now all that has changed dramatically and I feel proud whenever I give a speech. Has there been a positive change in your life after joining TM? There have been loads of positive changes. Most importantly, I had an obnoxious fear of speaking in public and that fear has now vanished! I am very happy to say that I am no longer afraid of speaking in front of the audience. I can express myself better and I have become much more confident and extrovert than before. What better change could have I asked for!

Confidence, energy, motivation & self-satisfaction, have you gained all of these at JPKU Toastmasters? Yes, absolutely. Getting to speak in front of some of the more competent speakers and then being appreciated by one and all gives me an enormous amount of confidence. The applause rejuvenates me and instills a feeling that there is no more fear to conquer. I can simply go on and on about the benefits... How would you respond to people having the view point that TM is like any other "coaching centre" claiming to make you proficient in communication skills? I would invite them to a Toastmasters club to attend a meeting. I am sure one meeting is all it will take them to find out the difference themselves. This is the only place where nobody is teaching you with a notepad and pencil in hand. Nobody is a teacher, and nobody is a student. You evolve as a speaker through learn-by-doing approach and gain from the advice of your mentor and fellow Toastmasters who are there for the same reason as you are.

What does a CC mean to you and how significant is achieving this milestone at TM? It means a lot to me personally. It is like a degree which says, “Richa, you have gone up one step”. It is an important recognition, a symbol of achievement. It is a trophy of victory. It is a critical milestone for any Toastmaster to achieve. A CC is a reward for all the efforts that go into becoming an effective speaker, and motivates the speaker to aim for even higher goals.

"No one means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is vicious”

Henry Adams

Has your company called it quits? Have you been downsized into a smaller office, or worse yet, the streets? With a dire economic crisis going on around the world, sooner or later, you’ll probably feel the squeeze of corporate belt-tightening tactics. How you react to the bad news can have a major impact on your future. And though you may feel it deep in your heart, panicking is not an option. So how do you face such harrowing circumstances without letting it all force you into making unwise decisions? If you have already been laid off, it won’t help to sit at home alone contemplating the problems of the world. Consider, instead, using that extra time to boost your skills and résumé. Use your time wisely and you may revive your career in the end. Toastmaster Linda Martins-Mann, who belongs to four clubs in California, was laid off from her job earlier this year. But her spirits and goals remain high. She says, “Toastmasters has shown me that I am worth more than I ever thought.” Mark Perew, a member of Toastmasters clubs in North Carolina and California, rebounded from a brief period of unemployment and even created a better future. “I was laid off in early 2003,” he says. “That was not a good time to be looking for a job. I credit Toastmasters with getting me employed again within three weeks.” This may seem fast, even for a Toastmaster, but Perew points to his Toastmasters training: “Interviews are just real-life Table Topics [impromptu speaking] sessions. I knew I had to answer the question that was asked; do it in a limited time; have a beginning, middle and end; use good eye contact; in-clude personal stories; add appropriate humor and connect with the interviewer. My time in Toastmasters made it possible for me to accomplish all that and get a better-paying job.” After relocating to San Jose, California, Renee Lam attended a number of Toastmasters clubs during a time when she didn’t have a job. She visited a flurry of club meetings in the space of two weeks – and says it produced all sorts of practical benefits, including getting an informational interview with someone and meeting a couple of people willing to circulate her résumé. “I want to emphasize that active participation in Toastmasters pays off,” Lam says, “Keep Toastmasters dues in your budget, even during unemployment.”

For Lisa Westlund of the Simi Valley club in California, it was a case of role reversal. She had worked in management for 27 years and was used to conducting interviews and hiring others. She says, “Being on the interviewee side is totally different and after so many years of being in charge, I needed to gain confidence to go on job interviews and also to have impromptu conversations.” Lisa joined Toastmasters to learn how to handle being on the other side of the table. She was hooked from the first meeting and adds, “I also gained the confidence to not only go on job interviews but to land a great job with a great company.” If you’re still working but a layoff appears imminent, try not to panic. This may not be easy to do when you see others forced out, one by one, all around you. But panicking won’t save you or your co-workers. Preparation is the key. When Judi Goldberg of the Minutemen club in Massachusetts was laid off, it did not come as a total surprise. She handled the incident calmly by relying, in part, on her Toastmasters training. She says Toastmasters “helped me push on and just know I will get another job.” Beverly Murray belonged to a corporate Toastmasters club made up of members from the financial industry giant, Wachovia. With their company in crisis, the club members were too busy to attend the meetings. And though the club disbanded as a result of this, the good news is that each former member knows about the Toastmasters program and can join another club when the opportunity arises. Murray continues to have faith in Toastmasters and says, “I plan to find another local club to join after the first of the year.” You can increase your worth to your company and, if necessary, to interviewers simply by building your communication and leadership skills. Have you checked to see if your company offers Toastmasters meetings? Joining your company’s club – or a neighborhood group – can be an easy way to accomplish this goal. It is alarming to be surrounded by a global financial crisis in which so many giants of industry and finance are going under. These disasters leave us wondering how to navigate such rough seas without sinking, but the answer remains the same: The best way to survive is to set a course that includes daily, weekly and monthly objectives. Eventually, with steady progress, you will steer through the troubled waters of today and reach the safety of that distant shore. You will get there. And when you do, you’ll be glad you’ve prepared for it.

Inside-Out

The Book Review

From the back cover Once known only by elites, who were unwilling to share their knowledge of the power, 'the secret' of obtaining anything you desire, is now revealed by prominent physicists, authors and philosophers as being based in the universal Law of Attraction. And the good news is that anyone can access its power to bring themselves health, wealth and happiness. Fragments of The Secret have been found in oral traditions, literature, religions and philosophies throughout the centuries. A number of the exceptional people who discovered its power went on to become regarded as the greatest human beings who ever lived. Among them: Plato, Leonardo, Galileo and Einstein. By unifying leading-edge scientific thought with ancient wisdom and spirituality, the riveting, practical knowledge will lead readers to a greater understanding of how they can be the mas-ters of their own lives. Read it: To learn how to use “The Secret”, in every aspect of your life. You will begin to understand the hidden, untapped power that is within you. You will learn the law of negativity, and the power of positive thinking; some would say the principle is almost similar to the teachings of Reiki, and the power of visualization. Some call it pseudo-science. The author repeats, "Think it and it will happen". A New Age self-help book, easy to read, and uplifting. Know what you want and ask the universe for it. The universe will conspire…

“I visited JPKU last week as a guest to see whet Toastmasters was all about. Hearing the people talk I was impressed. The first thing that struck me was the ease and quickness with which I started seeing myself as a “part” of the group rather than someone outside of it. I was invited to participate in the Table Topics section and needless to say, my legs were shaking when I got up to speak in front of a packed room, and that too an impromptu speech which I have never dared to try in my entire life. And the “Ah Counter’s” report for me towards the end said it all….

Nonetheless, the encouragement and warmth I received was enough for me to run down to the office and sign up. I knew I was at the right place and look forward to all the fun learning and growth this place has to offer me”
