Company news

After reminiscing over the past two decades, I have struggled with choosing my favourite project as I think there are many projects which JSM has taken on that have been significant to the growth of the Company. Whether it’s been a chance to gain additional company resources, an opportunity for staff to develop their skills or simply a chance to work in a different region of the country in which JSM has never operated.

Seeing JSM grow has been fantastic and the Directors and

I understand there is so much that goes into every Tender, every Project Delivery, General Maintenance and Business Support. I would like to personally thank every member of staff, Client, Visitor, Consultant and anyone who has been a part of our journey thus far. Thank you for your continuous hard work and I hope everyone has a very prosperous year.

Stuart WiltshireManaging Director

A word from the JSM Directors

JSM demonstrates extraordinary customer service in UxbridgeJSM’s Power Division was working in Uxbridge, London within a highly residential area, each house having its own driveway. The works involved excavating the highway, and therefore it was imperative to the residents that they were always given access and egress to their driveways. There was one family who were totally dependent on having 24-hour access to their drive, as they had a disabled son who needed daily medical treatment, which meant they needed to park as near to their front door as possible. Every day, the team made sure that they gave priority to this family, so as not to further impact on their daily routine. This commitment was recognised by the parents of this young child who sent in the following letter to JSM’s Head Office.

“Your Company is currently undertaking ‘essential upgrades’ to the electricity network along Bridge Road in Uxbridge (UB8). This kind of disruption is one that often fills us with dread. We have a critically ill child at home, who is ventilated 24 hours a day and requires additional oxygen. As you can imagine this requires a huge amount of equipment and

obstructions to the road have a great impact on his ability to have any time away from the home. He is also frequently in hospital, requiring hospital transport for routine appointments, due to the complexity of his needs. It was such a wonderful surprise this morning to see the thoughtful and considerate approach that your workers had towards us as they were completing their business. As my wife was carrying various equipment, one worker kindly scraped the ice off her window. They enquired how they could make our lives easier and assured us they would do what they could to leave us adequate room around our drive to manage with the ongoing works. We are grateful for their kindness and warm-hearted approach, they are to be commended”.The four JSM members of staff involved with this act of kindness, Dave Donahue, Brendon McDonnell, Aaron Anthony and Colin Lawrence, were acknowledged at the Safety Seminar and were awarded £25 Amazon Gift Vouchers. Well done to the team involved.

JSM awarded ISO 27001 Registration JSM is proud to announce that we have been awarded the ISO 27001 Registration. ISO 27001 is an internationally acclaimed framework for information security management that helps to keep information assets secure, such as, financial information, intellectual property, employee details or information entrusted to you by third parties. This registration will be held alongside JSM’s other ISO registrations which are ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environment Management) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management).SHEQ Director Mick Barrett says, “I would like to personally thank everyone who was involved in helping us achieve meeting the requirements of the standard, in particular, I would like to thank our IT Manager Andy Cheale for all his hard work and commitment.”In July, all office staff went through ISO 27001 training to be made aware of the basic requirements for this standard. All remaining JSM staff will be trained on ISO 27001 as part of their re-induction or via other suitable workshops.

It has been a joy seeing the new River Road Depot up and running after a laborious couple of months getting the offices and yard set up and ready for the January start. In the upcoming months, we would appreciate everyone’s co-operation and patience while we get fully settled in the new surroundings. We hope to see many productive years here. Looking back over the last 20 years for JSM I must say the most pivotal project for JSM was our first foray as Principal Contractor on a major project for a D.N.O. It was a momentous move for JSM and it was not a decision

we took lightly! The move was a real head-scratcher with so many factors to consider. Nevertheless, Mark, Stuart and I decided to make the jump and upon the success of the project, a whole new world opened up for the company as the industry began to see JSM as a real contender. Since then, the Company has gone from strength to strength! We have had some challenges along the way, but we have always managed to keep on track with the help of our JSM family.

John ScanlonOperations Director

Reflecting over the past 20 years, my most memorable project, and probably the most pivotal for me, was Woodhead Tunnel from 2014-2017. It was an unusual project, which I loved, as well as fascinating and unique in every way. It ran for three and a half years and the project included a number of firsts for JSM such as being the first major project for this Client and the first time we acquired a train! The site

was 6km into the mountains! It was the only way of accessing the site. Needless to say, I was overjoyed that we successfully completed the job but more so we completed it with no accidents. We understood the gravitas of the project and everyone played their part in making it a success.

JSM launches Intranet As JSM continues to grow and develop its internal infrastructure in relation to IT, it is important that new methods of communicating with employees are formed. This has been a crucial topic which has lead to JSM launching its Intranet site. The intranet is a private website solely accessible by JSM staff with a valid company email and password. The Intranet is a one-stop shop for everything staff would require to help them with their roles. What can be found on the intranet?

• All the controlled documents• Company Policies

and Procedures

• Staff directory with contact details

• Helpdesk (a place to submit enquiries to HR, Payroll, IT or SHEQ)

• Feedback (a place to submit comments regarding the intranet or current company practices)

• Near Miss formsThis is an exciting new form of communication with employees for JSM as the tools and information available on the Intranet will help all to do their jobs more efficiently, to a higher standard and will be simpler than the methods that were previously in place.

JSM shortlisted for National Grid’s Property AwardsAt the most recent National Grid Property Awards, JSM was shortlisted for the ‘Most Innovative Property Project’ and ‘Best Property Delivery (Large)’ awards for their remediation works at North Hyde Substation. In February 2018, the Company successfully completed works as appointed Principal Contractor for the remediation works at a 275kV Substation, which involved providing a solid solution to help mitigate the risks to human health associated with the presence of asbestos in the shallow soils

within the substation compound. The National Grid Property Awards are held to celebrate excellence by its Contract Partners and to reward regeneration, property and transaction projects that have contributed to helping the organisation meets its goals. The Award Ceremony was held at The Cumberland Hotel, London which was attended by Industry-leading Consultants, Designers and Contractors, all associated with delivering National Grid Property projects.

The SHEQ Road ShowIn May 2018, JSM held their first SHEQ Roadshow. Hosted by the SHEQ Department, the Roadshow took place over the course of a week in the old depot, Leven Road, and was created with the purpose of raising awareness in Occupational Health, Mental Health, Risk Assessment, Waste Disposal, the importance of PPE and vehicle checks.

The SHEQ Roadshow was designed to provide an interactive experience to attendees, where they received hands-on information, were given live demonstrations and encouraged to speak to someone in the SHEQ, Occupational and/or Mental Health Team for advice.

At the Roadshow, there was a ‘Spot the Hazard’ challenge where staff had to attempt to locate 25 hazards. The winners of this challenge were Russell Smith and Billy Turner who both located 24 hazards. They, in turn, were rewarded £25 Amazon Gift Vouchers, which they received at the Safety Seminar in November 2018. Team Leader

helps a choking teenager in Ilford On January 18th, at approximately 8 am, a team from JSM’s Comms Division was working on Clayhall Avenue in Ilford, East London. Whilst working, at a bus stop close by, the team heard some commotion and noticed somebody in distress. A young boy in school uniform appeared to be choking. Springing into action, Team Leader, Mircea Lupastean, and his team ran over to the schoolboy and Mircea delivered the Heimlich Manoeuvre as another member of the team called 999 and then the boy’s mother. Once the casualty was made safe, he was placed in the recovery position awaiting the ambulance’s arrival to receive further treatment. While the young boy was getting treated, the paramedic caught up with the JSM team to piece together what happened to which they stated that, if the young boy had not received help at the time he did, the situation could have been fatal.First aid knowledge is not only beneficial for the workplace and work colleagues, but it is also beneficial for the community. First aiders provide help to someone who is injured or ill until they can get more advanced medical treatment by seeing a doctor or health professional.

JSM wins Gold RoSPA for third year in a row For the third year in a row, JSM has achieved a Gold at the internationally-renowned RoSPA Health and Safety Awards, which recognises achievement in Health and Safety Management Systems including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

JSM gains ISO 45001 registrationJSM gained registration to the recognised OHSAS 18001 (Health and Safety) back in 2010, this Standard is now being replaced by the newly recognised IS0 45001 Standard. All companies have up until 2021 to migrate over to the new standard. We are pleased to announce that JSM is one of a few companies within our industry that has successfully migrated over to ISO 45001 following four days of audits over December 2018 and January 2019.The OHSAS 18001 is a standard for Occupational Health and Safety; which provides a framework to

identify, control and decrease the risks associated with health and safety within the workplace. The new standard ISO 45001 will work in conjunction with JSM’s current ISO 9001, 14001 and 27001 Standards. Additional factors the standard will look into is the consultation and participation of non-managerial workers, control of subcontractors and mental health and wellbeing. Mick Barrett says “The rapid implementation of ISO 45001 is a testament to JSM’s commitment to Health and Safety.”

Safety Seminar 2018JSM’s Safety Seminar, hosted by the SHEQ Department took place on Thursday 8th November 2018 in Broxbourne. Alana Warburton-Whitehead from Blue Lobster Therapy, who has been working very closely with JSM in recent years ensuring the company moves towards a progressive mindset to the topic of mental health, spoke to staff on the importance of mental health and brought along an inspirational young man who gave JSM an insight into his own personal battle with mental health, Lee Rowland.Chris Woods from Karrdale also engaged with JSM to talk about the importance of ‘Inspiring Safe Communities’ and the ‘Your Zero’ mindset. The SHEQ Department

would like to thank the guest speakers and every member of staff that attended, including our Contractors and Clients. It is hoped that everyone in attendance took home how crucial safe working is.Following last year’s Safety Seminar, two Safety Champions were chosen from the selection of nominees from Line Managers. Congratulations to Michael O’Mahony and Mieszko Kurzydlo, who were crowned Managerial and Operational Safety Champions respectively. They have shown tremendous knowledge of health and safety and this reflects in their day to day operations on site. Michael and Mieszko both received their own personalised trophy and a £100 Amazon Gift Voucher.

Employee Representatives MeetingThe SHEQ Department would like to highlight the Employee Representatives Meeting programme.Employee Representatives have been selected throughout the Business, one from each Division, and meet quarterly to discuss Health and Safety matters that affect staff at JSM. The Employee Representatives Meeting provides a safe space to seriously express issues deriving from all aspects of the business to SHEQ Management. Vice versa, meetings

are also used as another method of distributing information from the SHEQ Department to staff. Under the Health and Safety Regulations, JSM has a legal responsibility to meet with Employees to discuss health and safety matters, however, given the nature of our business and the integrated approach to compliance undertaken by the SHEQ Team, the meetings will also incorporate environmental and quality matters. Senior management interview

John Fitzgerald , Senior Operations Manager, JSM Power Division

What is your job title and describe your role at JSM?

As the Senior Operations Manager for JSM’s Power Division, my role is to manage and support internal and external resources for the Faults and Services Frameworks, Minor civils Frameworks and also Specialist Projects.

Describe your job and run through your typical day

On a typical day, I allow time for various communications with my Project Managers and Site Teams ensuring everything is in correct order on our sites, to deal with day to day matters and to also discuss plans for current and future works.

I spend a lot of time supporting our Commercial Department with the estimating, pricing and planning of new works for the often varied

and complex scope of works. Often I will have outstanding technical statements or reports to write up, review or submit to our Clients.

Why did you decide to go into the engineering/infrastructure/construction industry?

I grew up in a construction/engineering environment and I naturally followed that route. I looked forward to the vast diversity it offered and the travelling aspects associated with the industry.

What did you study in school?

I studied and qualified as a Construction Plant Technician at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in Dublin, Ireland. My father owned a lot of heavy plant equipment, so I had plenty of practice at home. I was taking machines apart from a very young age!

How did that lead to the career you currently find yourself in?

Having spent 15 years or so fixing, operating, installing and commissioning heavy industrial machinery in a civils environment, I gradually edged over into the heavy civils and eventually into the utility world.

Who was your first employer and why?

My first Employer in Ireland was a Farm Machinery Supply Company and I was responsible for the assembling and commissioning of the complex farm machinery that arrived from overseas.

My first Employer in the UK was a Civils and Mechanical Contractor providing civils and mechanical services to many industries across the UK, such as wastewater, food processing plants and chemical plants.

Run through a brief CV since.

For 5 years, I worked as a Site Engineer for Dorr Oliver Works in Baghdad, Iraq and across the UK before moving to another Civils Company to become Site Foreman on projects such as Warner Cinema in Leicester Square, The Walnuts Shopping Centre in Orpington and Broadmoor Prison. For the following 6 years, I was a Site Agent for projects like the London Millennium Dome and the Excel Exhibition.

In 2002 I joined Laing O’Rourke as Construction Manager and managed projects like Heathrow Airport Terminals 3, 4 and 5, Thames Water Amp 3 framework and Stanstead Airport’s new energy infrastructure. In 2010 I joined JSM.

What is exciting about your role? What do you enjoy the most?

I think it’s both exciting and rewarding working for our blue-chip Clients as a Tier 1 Supplier. What I enjoy the most is the diverse challenges that are presented to me and my teams on a daily basis, along with, being able to resolve major issues for our Clients.

What are the biggest challenges in your role?

The biggest challenge I face is matching our resource levels with our Client’s emergency demands which are seldom planned. This requires an abundance of logistical knowledge. The Fault & Services Department’s workload is reactive by nature and thus is difficult to plan accurately. We are in a great position, however, because we can divert our specialist resources during quiet periods and reverse this when things get busy. Diversity and the ability to multi-task are important attributes to our business success.

Who has had the most influence on your career? How and why?

I would have to compliment that honour to my late father who was a unique and pioneering man. My father prepared me very well for every eventuality and he never really pushed me down any particular route but he made sure I had important skills to survive in any situation. He was strong and fearless yet compassionate and helpful to anyone in need.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Although I have little or no regrets, I suppose I would encourage my younger self to go into further education, maybe to a degree level. Also, to have a

better home/work life balance.

What has been the most pivotal moment in your career?

When I started working at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, I was given remarkable opportunities to show what I could deliver under challenging circumstances. I gained great self-confidence and respect through hard work.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt in your career thus far?

Be honest and work hard. Don’t try to fool anybody or yourself. Don’t

burn any bridges. Do your best and everything else will fall into place.

Do you have hobbies out of the office? What are they? How often do you partake in them?

I have a great appreciation for nature and wild animals and I like to go fishing and hunting. I enjoy wild camping off the beaten track and I would love to go on safari – one day maybe!

Lastly, I love restoring old machinery, like old engines. I’m never happier than when I’m fixing something!

Communication Project Profile

Slough to London

In May 2017, JSM delivered on a new telecoms connection between Slough and the City of London for one of the company’s biggest telecommunications client. This project was intricate and utilised various in-house departments such as the Comms Civils Team, the Sewers Division, the Splicing Teams and the Streetworks Department. At the time when this project was active, it was the longest project (regarding the meterage) JSM had undertaken in its history. This project saw the installation of fibre cables over the distance of 42km.JSM’s planners were thoroughly involved from the start, the planning team assisted the Client with the design of the route and proposed alternative methods for reducing the route length. JSM made alterations to the route and incorporated installations in the Thames Water sewer network and canal towpaths to accompany the standard highways installation. No matter how much planning took place prior to work commencing, with a project of this size, challenges were inevitable.

JSM worked with a variety of stakeholders and this had a severe effect when creating the programme. The Streetworks Department had to obtain permits and authorisations from all the relevant Councils and Stakeholders in order to install the cable in their assets, as a result, it was required for works to take place at rigidly defined times. Works were still subject to weather conditions, thus making planning difficult and creating the need for contingency plans. However,

through effective communication and creative thinking, the project was accomplished to schedule. A significant amount of fibre was installed in the London sewer networks between Ealing and the City of London. As with ground level operations, permits were also required to work in different sections of the sewers, which added to the complexity of the project planning. JSM’s Sewer Team contains professionals that have numerous years of experience working in this high-risk environment installing fibre networks and have experience with the enforced time constraints. The sewers are very weather-sensitive and if rain was expected works could not take place as it would be likely that the sewers would be flooded. The works were scheduled from January to May where it is common to have large amounts of rain, so JSM ensured the programme was flexible enough to accommodate such predicaments.Environmental hazards were also not exempt from this project. Before work commenced, Japanese Knotweed was identified on Trout Lane, West Drayton.

This was confirmed following an environmental survey by JSM Consultants, ADAS. The plant was located along both sides of the towpath. The Japanese Knotweed infestation occupied the area of approximately 40m X 3m, with the potential of the rhizomes being anywhere else within a 7m radius of the area. Japanese knotweed is a concern because if left untreated

or disturbed has the potential to damage hard surfaces and cable ducts and to spread to other areas of the site. (see more on Japanese Knotweed on page 13).JSM and ADAS worked closely together to comprise an environmental method statement that would minimise the risk of breaching UK Environmental Legislation, as well as, minimising

the risk of transmitting Japanese Knotweed off-site or further along the route. The method statement included instructions on how to treat the infected area, how to store/dispose of the weeds and also precautions that should be taken for vehicles and operatives working in the area. All personnel on site received a training briefing via toolbox talks. This Slough to London project was another example of JSM completing a major project successfully, while cohesively uniting various departments within the Company.Upon completion of this project, JSM had worked with a number of high profile stakeholders who include five different London Boroughs, the City of London, Slough County Council, Canal River Trust (CRT), Historic England, Transport for London (TfL) and Thames Water. This is an extraordinary task for JSM’s Comms Department.

JSM offsets carbon emissions In the last issue of the newsletter, it was announced that JSM received a Green Apple Award for the in-house innovation NICE® (Non-Intrusive Cable Extraction). As a result of winning this award, JSM became Green World Ambassadors and had 100 trees planted in JSM’s name that was accounted towards the United Nations Billion Trees Initiative. The planting of the 100 trees also works in conjunction with JSM’s Environmental KPI as a means of offsetting the Company’s Carbon Footprint.

Environmental Report 2018 In 2018, the Government set out its 25-Year Plan to improve and protect the environment. JSM remains committed to reducing their impact on the environment and to improve it wherever possible. JSM annually reviews its emission targets and environmental performance in order to demonstrate the company remains on track and is advancing in the right direction towards minimal unnecessary environmental impact.

By collecting data from all scopes of the business such as energy, water, waste, transport and materials purchased, JSM’s carbon emissions have remarkably this year’s Environmental Report have shown important improvements to JSM’s carbon footprint figure.JSM’s carbon footprint for 2017-2018 totalled 3007.38 tonnes, which is a decrease from the previous year’s footprint. This is the lowest figure JSM has produced since 2010 and this is owed to the reduction in car commuting figures and electricity consumption.

The three main contributors to this year’s emissions level were Red Diesel (fuel used in construction vehicles and plant), staff company vehicles and materials (cement and concrete production).Environmental objectives for the upcoming year:

• Pledge to ban single-use plastics by 2020

• Continue to divert over 95% of waste from landfill

• Reduce red diesel consumption by 10%

Community Wood Recycling A vast amount of the waste wood material at JSM’s previous Depot at Leven Road was donated and collected by Community Waste Wood, who recycle all donated wood in a beneficial way for local communities. All wood is distributed amongst local small businesses and charities for

construction and other community necessities, for example, benches, fences, sheds etc.In conjunction with helping the local community, JSM also managed to achieve over 95% of waste-to-landfill diversion and will be continuing to do so in 2019.

Himalayan Balsam & Japanese Knotweed Himalayan Balsam is an attractive, non-native invasive plant that commonly grows near waterways in the UK. This plant’s presence has been increasing around the UK in recent years and is known to spread rapidly. Each plant produces over 800 seeds that shoot into the air and can travel up to 7m away. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to plant or spread

this plant with punishments ranging from unlimited fines and/or two years imprisonment. Japanese Knotweed is another non-native invasive plant that spread rapidly. The plant forms dense clumps over 3m high, grows over 20mm a day and spreads out to prevent the growth of native plants. The plant spreads quickly through the progression

of its root system and because any fragments of its stem or root will grow to form a new plant (a piece as small as 0.7 grams can regenerate). This makes it a very difficult plant to eradicate. If you would like more information on these plants or if you believe you have spotted them in or in close proximity of your site, contact your Environmental Advisor.

Winter HibernationPlease remember that this is the season where particular animals are in the midst of their hibernation season. We request that all operatives remain vigilant while on work sites. If you spot anything or are unsure of anything contact a member of the SHEQ Department.

JSM is Keeping Britain TidyLitter seems to be taking over the streets of Hertsmere with pockets of rubbish located in local green spaces, verges and quiet roads. However, this is not just a Hertsmere problem but a nationwide one. Did you know it costs the UK millions of pounds every year to clean up litter? As JSM remains committed to helping the environment and giving back to the community, this spring the company will be holding a litter picking event

in Potters Bar. This activity will coincide with the Great British Spring Clean campaign led by ‘Keeping Britain Tidy’.Cutting down and ridding the town of litter will improve the appearance of the town in which JSM is based in and also allow nature to flourish as intended. Litter picking creates a great opportunity for team bonding, as well as, a chance to enjoy some light physical exercise in the great outdoors!

This rewarding activity is in line with JSM’s Corporate Social Responsibility, sustainability and environmental goals. Get in touch with Environmental Advisor Hazim Bidiwi on [email protected] if you would like to get involved.
