VCCS and Teacher EducationIn 2002, the VCCS created five Centers for Teacher Education in different regions of the state. The Center for Teacher Education (CTE) in the Richmond area is a joint venture between JSRCC and JTCC and is located at the JSRCC Parham Road Campus.

Working together with representatives from the four-year institutions, the VCCS developed the first teacher education specializations.

Colleges in the VCCS were authorized to teach EDU 200: Introduction to Teaching as a Profession. It requires a 40 hour practicum in a public school and counts towards teacher licensure.

Every four-year college and university in Virginia with a teacher preparation program has its own agreement with the VA Department of Education.

Some colleges/universities in Virginia have degrees leading to teacher licensure at the Bachelor’s level.

Other colleges/universities in Virginia have degrees leading to teacher licensure at the Master’s level.

Not only are there differences in degrees offered, the different Virginia colleges/universities have different course preferences for their degree requirements.

This means that JTCC students who pursue one of the teacher education specializations MUST know where they plan to transfer in order to save TIME and MONEY.

Recommendations for High School Students Interested in Becoming Teachers

Students should take four years of mathematics.

Students who want to teach English or history should take four years of a foreign language.

Students who want to teach K-6 may also be required to have a foreign language. It is best to consult the transfer institution.

Students should decide early where they want to transfer.

Students should decide which of JTCC’s teacher education specializations best fit their teaching goals Students may wish to take Teachers for Tomorrow (EDU 293 and EDU 295) as a senior. JTCC will waive the SDV 100/101 requirement. Students may receive additional credit from the four year college to which they transfer.

Students should consider scholarship opportunities, especially in the sciences and mathematics. These are posted on the JTCC Teacher Education site.

Students should make plans to join the JTCC Future Teachers Club to network with students of similar interests.
