Results from the 2013 California Standards Test (CST) showed that our Juarez Scholars made gains in both language arts and math. As a result, our school's Academic Performance Index (API) has increased from 820 to 824! This is an amazing accomplishment in a time of transition from our California State Standards to the initial implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These new standards bring our students new challenges that aim to further develop their critical thinking skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing across all subject areas. The primary goal of these new standards is to have students not only prepare for their next grade, but also become better equipped and prepared for their college experience and future professional careers. As a means to engage students in this process, our staff will be guiding our scholars to "read like a detective and write like a reporter". As detectives and reporters, they will be asked to question what they have read, seek multiple sources of information, and then be prepared to present what they have learned in a variety of ways including writing to inform, writing to explain, and orally presenting their learning. We are extremely proud of our Juarez staff who has worked diligently over the years to provide meaningful and engaging learning opportunities for all students. We also know that we couldn't have done this without the support of our families and com- munity. As partners in education, we know that you too have contributed to the edu- cational success of our scholars. So on behalf of our entire Juarez School learning community...Thank you! Our Juarez staff will continue to seek professional growth opportunities that will keep us current and relevant to today's educational demands. I am con- fident that together, as One Team, our Juarez Team of staff, students, and parents will con- tinue to raise the bar in educational excellence. HOW TO PREPARE FOR PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent Conferences are right around the corner. These conferences represent an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and exchange information to ensure a successful school year. To make the process more meaningful, consider the following tips. Before the Conference: Confirm an appointment with your child's teacher. Talk with your child about how s/he feels about school. Review the last report card and test data. Write down important information that you wish to share. Make a list of questions that you wish to ask. During the Conference Be on time. As the teacher shares information, feel free to ask for clarification. Share the information and questions that you have prepared. Prior to leaving, make sure you have a plan of action to support your child. After the Conference Share with your child the information you have learned. Implement the plan of action to support your child. Monitor your child’s homework completion and leisure reading activities. If you are concerned about your child’s academic progress, contact the teacher. Ongoing communication is essential for an authentic home/school partnership to exist. It is important to view the Parent Conference as merely the beginning of the dialogue. Working together, we can make a tremendous difference in your child’s academic growth and future opportunities.
