Sharq Third Expansion Project,Jubail, Saudi Arabia

Overview

Sharq, which is also known as the Eastern Petrochemical Company, was established in 1981. It is a joint venture between Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the Saudi Petrochemical Development Company (SPDC), a Japanese consortium led by Mitsubishi Corporation. Sharq is the world’s largest single ethylene glycol manufacturing complex. The company completed a US $6.4billion construction programme of its third world-scale ethylene glycol (EG) plant and a plant to de-bottleneck its existing linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE).

Amiantit Fiberglass Industries Ltd (AFIL), commissioned in 1977, is a Flowtite GRP pipes and fittings manufacturer at the first industrial area in Dammam Saudi Arabia. Since then AFIL has produced more than 10 million meters (32.8 million feet) of Flowtite’s continuous advancing mandrel processed Glassfibre Reinforced Polyester (GRP) pipes, which represents the state of the art in GRP pipe technology. This process allows the use of continuous glass fibre reinforcements in the circumferential direction.

Project Background

In autumn 2005, SABIC awarded a program management services contract to Foster Wheeler Energy.

The contract covered the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) management of the Sharq expansion project. As for the piping section of the project, Glass-fibre Reinforce Polyester (GRP) pipes were selected as a primary material. GRP was selected due to its anatomy of composite material. It mainly consists of resin, sand and glass fibre and the product is individually engineered to meet the project specifications.

Despite the fierce competition from both local and international pipe manufacturers, AFIL was awarded to supply and install its Flowtite GRP pipes and fittings.

GRP pipes are not a new concept for SABIC to be used as seawater/cooling water system. Many of SABIC’s manufacturing plants have installed GRP pipes with decades of track operational records with no reported problems. This by itself demonstrated to the consultants and owners that GRP pipes are the ideal solution for seawater/cooling water applications.

There were many factors which compelled the client and consultant to award the project to AFIL, one of the world largest producers of GRP pipes with extraordinary and unparalleled experience in the seawater and cooling water applications. AFIL’s Flowtite GRP Pipe system was the ultimate choice for the consultants due to the following advantages:

Low maintenance costs No pipeline system failures caused by cohesive materials and erosive natural soils Flexibility of modification at very low cost Onsite modifications can be done with consultation of AFIL field engineers through a local supplier Easy installation Inherent corrosion resistance

Amiantit Fiberglass Industries Ltd. (AFIL) gained substantial experience in designing and producing such large GRP piping system, which will be further utilized for the future projects within Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

In addition to the described project, AFIL’s GRP Flowtite pipe systems can also be used in the following main applications:

Water transmission and distribution Sanitary sewerage collection systems and outfalls Storm water Hydropower Seawater intake and outfalls Circulating cooling water in power plants Industrial application

Product Range

AFIL supplied Foster Wheeler, the main contractor of Sharq, third expansion project with various Flowtite GRP pipes and fittings. The pipes diameter ranging from DN 600-4000mm with a pressure class of PN 9 bar for the underground pipes and PN 10 bar for the aboveground pipes. All pipes were supplied in stiffness class SN2500 N/m. The seawater/cooling water application was installed underground and aboveground. The design temperature is 90°C for the aboveground pipes and 60°C for the underground pipes.

In addition to the diameters mentioned above, AFIL’s Flowtite GRP pipe systems can be supplied in the following diameter range. Tailor made diameters can be supplied on request.

AFIL standard diameter range in mm

In addition to the pipes, a wide range of Flowtite GRP fittings and accessories are offered by AFIL and its affiliates through out the world. These include: Elbows Tees, Wyes and Nozzles Reducers Flanges Bulkheads Saddles Tapping

Installation

Underground installation (UG):Is a common installation method for Flowtite GRP pipes. For this project it was a mix of single straight pipe trench digging and installing it to a full four pipe line circuit system, which was the heat exchange plate system. That required the contractor to excavate a very large trench and lay all four pipes in parallel and looping the ends of the pipes with custom made fittings. All the pipes were joined using the butt and wrap process creating a Flowtite restrained joint pipe system. AFIL’s common system is Flowtite non-restrained joint system, which consists of a coupling combining two pipe segments. The reason for using restrained joints in this project was to eliminate the concrete thrust blocks, which is often required for large diameter pressure pipes. The nature of the project and the dense proximity of the facility did not allow concrete thrust blocks resulting in the use of restrained butt and wrap joints.

Aboveground installation (AG): This installation method stands for mounting the pipes on aboveground level. The pipeline is fully exposed and supported on cradles. This method is often used inside plants and for this project it required detailed stress analysis to ensure proper performance.
