Name: Cheng Nam Ping Cabe SID: 54051392 Judging by the Book Cover BACKGROUND It has been a phenomenon that people nowadays vote the district councillor or legislative councilor without further investigations and understanding the background, visions or deed of the person they vote. Most of the time what parties the candidates belong to or their first impression on them become the only criteria. However, once if the councillors they chose do not satisfy their needs or handle their complaints, they feel dissatisfied and regretful. The main purpose of this project is to awaken people to look deeper and clearly into the one they are going to vote since it is not something casual but very serious and will directly affect their lives and others’. DESCRIPTION OF THE ARTWORK This artwork is classified as participatory and performance art. The whole artwork requires others’ participation to make it complete. Also, the artwork is based on the act I give out those creased leaflets. Therefore, this is a kind of participatory and performance art. Before actually performing the artwork, I have to collect some leaflets of the candidates from different parties like Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong aka DAB, People Power etc. Also, I have to stand beside the banners and offices and see if people would really look at them or even read them. After that, I need to crease those leaflets. The reasons why I crease the leaflets are because it is a metaphor for all the dissatisfactions of the people caused by the councilors. Another reason is that the phenomenon that people do not deeply understand or know that candidates they are voting triggers me to think of a new way to attract others attention on it. Once the leaflets are creased and passed to the people, they would like to know or be interested in what the leaflets are about. Then, I give out those leaflets on the campus.

FEEDBACK After giving out the leaflets, people mostly opened and flattened the leaflets, looked at it and asked, “What is it?” This fulfilled my expectation a bit that people would have a look at the leaflets and read the leaflets words by words. IMPROVEMENT Doing this artwork, I encountered some problems. For the preparation, I found it difficult to collect the leaflets. I went to many offices but there were no leaflets for people to take. After visiting quite a number of offices and collected no leaflets, I went in an office and asked for it. The officer looked very sceptical about my purpose and background. He asked about the purpose and which university I was from. Later on, I collected the leaflets that were stuck, on the wall. Another problem is that I should have chosen some places with people who concern less about the people they are going to vote. Since the project is to awake the people to understand and remove the mindset of voting for the candidates’ parties, I need to give the leaflets to them and explain the project I am doing to them instead.
