UNDERSTANDING THE SPORTHOW IT ALL BEGANJudo means “soft path”, a definition that resonates with the lessons of Jigoro Kano, creator of the sport, which develops not only the technique but also the mental discipline. Judo’s debut in the Olympic Games was at Tokyo 1964. The Japanese are the sport’s greatest winners, with 72 Olympic medals. Women started competing at Barcelona 1992 and currently fight in seven weight categories, just like men. Judo now has more than 20 million practitioners in over 20 countries.
ABOUT THE COMPETITIONThe score varies according to type of technique: ippon, wazari and yuko. Ippon ensures victory and can occur in three situations: when the judoka brings the opponent down with strength and speed, and they fall on their back; when one of the competitors is held down for 20 seconds; or when a fighter gives up due to an arm-lock or choking, for example. Wazari is an almost perfect technique: the opponent is taken down, but the technique does not have the necessary elements to be considered an ippon or the competitor is held down for at least
15 seconds (but less than 20). Two wazari are equivalent to one ippon. The third technique is the yuko, that occurs when the rival falls on the side or is held down for at least 10 seconds (but less than 15). Events awarding medals are performed in a direct elimination system. Playoff combats allow athletes who lost in the quarter-finals to compete for bronze medals (two to each weight category).
DID YOU KNOW?No sport has brought as many Olympic medals to Brazil than judo. With four medals at London 2012, with Felipe Kitadai, Mayra Aguiar and Rafael Silva winning bronze and the unprecedented women gold for Sarah Menezes, the country has taken 19 podiums in the sport.
