2014 in review
2014 has been a year of great achievement for Judo in Victoria both at the high performance and local levels
Wow! What a year 2014 has been for the sport of Judo in Victoria.
Whilst we have had 328 fresh new faces begin their Judo journeysat the other extreme we had five members reach their shodangradings, a step which many regard as the beginning of a wholenew judo pathway.
On the competitive front we had seven representatives from thestate compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held inGlasgow. This event is a sporting pinnacle and two of our athleteswalked away with bronze medals – an incredible and unforgettablelife experience. At nationals this year we had a 94 member strongsquad compete and walk away with 72 medals – putting Victoria in2nd place overall.
Locally we conducted 7 tournaments throughout the year whichreceived collectively a total of 1,050 entries. There was also arange of kata, refereeing and coaching seminars held, all of whichwere high quality and well attended events. A thankyou must go toall the volunteers and participants who make our events sosuccessful.
We are please to present to you here the 2014 annual report, acollective reflection on the year past and an opportunity tocommunicate the plans for the year ahead.
We hope you have all achieved your personal goals this year andare walking away proud of your achievements – we as acommittee could not be prouder of the judo community here inVictoria and look forward to working with you both on and off themat in 2015.

2014 has seen significant advancements in the operating processes of JVI…
President’s Report
The 2013-14 year has been a year ofconsolidation and growth in Judo Victoria Inc.The Committee has been stable, hard workingand above all cohesive. The only resignationfrom the JVI Committee was from NickPapadimitropulos who had to resign when hetook up the role as the Treasurer of the JFAlast November. The Committee decided not toreplace Nick on our committee.
I would especially like to acknowledge the workof Rod Cox who worked tirelessly as ourSecretary. The role of secretary is a verydemanding and time consuming job and Rodhas finished his 19th year as Secretary with allof the energy and enthusiasm as if it was hisfirst. Rod has also found time to coordinate ournew Website and to manage our Facebookpage.
I would also like to acknowledge the excellentwork of Pat Quek as our Treasurer who hasconsistently provided high quality financialreports and high quality data as the basis fordecision making. Under Pat's stewardship JVIhas been very efficient at managing ourreserves and at paying our accounts.
The other main improvement area has beenthe work of Malcolm Slade our registrar. Ouron line registration system is very efficient and Ihave has nothing but positive feedback fromour clubs on how efficient and user-friendly itis. The good news is that we are still rolling out
the next phase of implementation that willprovide even better service to our membership.
I would also like to thank Senior Vice PresidentDaniel Kelly for his support during the year, and for filling in as acting President twiceduring the year.
JVI finished the year with a committed andhard working committee with high morale andexcellent relationships within the committeeand with the Victorian judo family.
Development Officer: JVI is very grateful toour Development Officer Robyn Dawson for allof her work which is often above and beyondthe call of duty. She is very productive forsomeone that is only employed two days aweek. The key to her success is that shesupports and value adds to the work of ourvolunteers. Robyn continues to edit ourNewsletters which along with our Web site andFacebook are the main ways that wecommunicate with our membership. Robynalso liaises with the State Government onbehalf of JVI.

… and also the establishment of a moral code to guide how our sport is run
President’s Report (continued.)
Tournament Committee: Sandy Hollingsworth and theTournament Committee have done a very good jobagain this year. We trialled running state trainingfollowed by tournaments this year but after reviewing thisinitiative we decided not to continue it in 2015. SouthernCross was bigger and better than in the past, but we stillneed it to grow. It was pleasing that the feedback frominterstate coaches and coaches was very complimentaryabout how well it was organised. I appeal to all of ourclubs to support our tournaments.
Referees: Our Referees Commission went throughextensive change this year, and the new commissionunder the leadership of Stan Ashley has done a lot ofwork in education and developing new referees. It wasvery pleasing to see that one of our new refereecommission members Trudy Walker was promoted toContinental level at the IJF exam event in China lastDecember.During 2014 JVI invested in new technology andimplemented the IJF system of having one referee onthe mat supported by two CARE systems. I am pleasedto report that our referees were very quick to take on thechallenges of the new technology. Our Referees are continually striving to improve thestandard of refereeing in Victoria and to develop newreferees.
State Coaches and managers and team:Congratulations to all of our members that representedVictoria and Australia during 2014. Competitors onlyachieve this level by starting off judo at a local club, competing in local competitions and by representingVictoria.
As the Victorian President I was very proud of theprofessionalism of our Coaches and Manager, and thebehaviour and the on mat performances of our team.We are so lucky to have a great manager in JeanCoughlan-Poole and such outstanding coaches as MariaPekli, Daniel Kelly and David Nabulsi and their team ofassistants.
Online registration process Our tournament processeshave been streamlined with the successful use oftechnology this year. Our use of bar coded membershipcards has dramatically improves the tournamentregistration process. At the Southern Cross weimplemented the online registration and payment systemabout which all of the feedback has been positive. I wishto acknowledge the role of Malcolm Slade who asregistrar steered us through all of these changes.
JVI Moral Code: As the President of JVI, I have beenworking with Aurelien (Ori) Couston, a qualified Frenchjudo instructor, to develop and promote a Judo MoralCode in Victoria, based on the French model. This Moralcode consisted originally of eight values - Self-Control,Honour, Honesty, Courage, Friendship, Courtesy,Modesty and Respect to which we added the value ofPatience. As you can see, regardless whether you are acompetitor, a coach, a referee, a parent I am sure thesenine little words appeal to you through their simplicityand powerful meaning. What makes these values sopowerful is that they do not only relate to Judo but alsoto all aspects of our daily life.
I believe that the Judo moral code will help us to
develop, market and promote our sport to the next level.I encourage all of our clubs to get behind this initiative.• It is not about putting a list of values on the wall, or
paying "lip service" to the MORAL Code that underpinsall aspects of Judo.
• We must live the Values of Judo. It is all aboutcoaches being positive role models
• For each Value it is about the culture that you build inyour club, and the behaviors that parents and childrencan see.
• It is about coaches explicitly teaching the values in theMoral Code in ways that children can understand.
• It is about changing lives by encouraging children toapply the Values of Judo in the home. at school and indaily lives.
Volunteers: Last but not least I wish to thank all of thevolunteers that have supported Judo Victoria this year. This includes our referees, tournament committee, tournament helpers and everyone that has helped at anyevent that we have run. There are too many of you tomention individually. At the national titles in June GaryMcPhee was recognised as our Victorian volunteer ofthe year.

The secretary’s office reflects on the increasing and changing role of communications in our organisation and how the secretary’s role will have to evolve of the coming year
Secretary’s Report
This report covers the period from my electionon 20 October 2013 to 30 June 2014, although Imay extrapolate a little.
Things have changed in the 15 years since Iwas last Secretary. The workload hasincreased in several areas: emails (1200+ sofar); incorporation regulations and reporting;social media; litigation; and governance.
When I decided to stand for the Committee, Idid not think the workload had increased somarkedly, however only one month in I realisedthat I could not maintain all of the technical sub-committee positions I was holding. I believethat one person with occupational, family, andjudo club responsibilities would not be able tofulfil the position as it stands.
When I started, my aim was to improvecommunication with members and ensure thatour decisions and operations were transparent.I believe that, with the help of the Committeemembers and our sole, part time (in paymentonly) employee we have achieved that. Allhave helped, but the ones I notice most are:Robyne Dawson, Michelle Matthews, AdrianJames, Daniel Kelly and Janet Lambert.
While I have been able to maintain a 10 hourper week coaching schedule, a refereeing andseminar load, the rest of the Committee issimilarly tasked, most are involved at thehighest level of Australian (and in some cases,
International) Judo. While this ensures that thetechnical side of Judo is at the forefront, itcannot continue. Judo must expand. Ourmajor aim is to increase membership, and theincreased workloads and expertise required infields outside judo, must be accommodatedfrom the wider sports and businesscommunities.
While I am very pleased with the website, thefacebook page (over 500 likes); newsletter;Committee minutes; online memberships, graderegistration and tournament entry, I am lookingforward to a year of further major changes, which will bring the JVI truly into the 21stCentury.
I am very happy to be associated with thedynamic people who are doing so much for oursport.

The registrations office has been working hard across the year to streamline and automate a number of core operations processes and developing reporting which will allow greater insights into our member base
Registrar’s Report
2013/2014 has been a busy year. Many newinitiatives have been undertaken andcompleted.
The development of the JVI database andreport generationThis development has enabled online servicesto provide JVI requirements for complete andaccurate record keeping and report generation, all at a very low cost. Online services includenew memberships, membership renewals, grading applications and club membershiprenewals. In processing grading applications, certificates are now being sent to clubs fullyprinted with the name, date of grading and thegrade.
The JVI database also allows automaticgeneration of emails to provide timelyreminders of memberships becoming due andcourtesy emails confirming that newmemberships, renewals and gradings havebeen processed with documents being sent bypost. These services, plus clubs being able toaccess securely their membership recordsonline, completes phase 1 of theimplementation. Further online services tomembers and clubs will be introduced in2014/2015.
Membership cards are now being provided withnew memberships and membership renewals. Each membership card has a barcode printedon it which allows a more streamlined entry into
competitions, reducing waiting times and dataentry. The JVI database is also closelyintegrated with the JVI competition Draw,Scoring and Run Sheet Progress displaysystems.
Online entry to JVI competitionsAt the Southern Cross International Opencompetition the JVI database system alsoallowed for an efficient online entry system. This was very successful and so will be afeature of entry into future JVI competitions.
GradingsIt is unfortunate that a number of clubs are stillnot registering gradings with the state body.Registering gradings allows us to track theprogress and development of our sport, as wellas providing a sound record of achievementwhen students eventually apply for dan grades.
AppreciationMy thanks go to the assistance and patience by club administrators during this time ofdevelopment and integration of JVI’s database and reporting systems. JVI is most appreciative of the development of database and online services by our provider, Event Secretary.

Highcollection fees (13%) and lack of accountabilityby IMG were the reasons for us leaving IMG.Kudos to the Registrar, Malcolm Slade, whohas done a splendid job in setting up the on-lineregistration. Event Secretary, the collectionagency for memberships revenue has tailoredthe collections to our requirements and withlesser fees (3.5%) charged for their services.Their monthly report for revenue collections hasbeen a great tool in preparation of monthlyfinancial reports

2014 has been a busy year of sports development and media activity, and 2015 looks even bigger
Sport Development Officer’s Report
September 2014 marked 2 years for me asSport Development Officer for Judo Victoria Inc.The time has simply flown!
Apart from day to day administration tasks likenewsletter preparation, grant submissions, social media, funding reports and representingJVI at Sport Development and Sport andRecreation events, the major project this yearhas been assisting Neville Sharpe with thedevelopment of JVI Values project.
Neville feels very strongly about this project andit has been a valuable opportunity for me tolearn more about Judo. I look forward tocompleting the roll out of the 9 Values, OneFamily resources for JVI clubs.
Term 4 2014 sees the end of the AASCprogram. Over 400 children have participated inthis program in the last 12 months and I wouldlike to thank the coaches who work so hard tomake this a very popular program. I have hadpreliminary talks with the AIS to see what thefuture holds in this space. The new program,‘Sporting Schools’ commences in Term 3 2015.
During the 50 year anniversary of Judo joiningthe Olympic movement, JVI has developed animportant relationship with the National SportMuseum at the MCG. Jake Andrewartha andMark Anthony took part in Olympic WeekCelebrations there and the NSM is lookingforward to JVI being involved in exhibitions and
activities there.
JVI also has a fledging relationship with BlindSport Victoria and in 2015 JVI coaches andclubs will have the opportunity to accessdevelopment programs in the Disability Sport.
I am also excited to be able to work with AdrianJames and others JVI members to see theoutcomes from the very successful StrategicPlanning Day, come to fruition.
I would like to thank Pat Quek for his guidanceand advice and Rod Cox for his patience while Imove along that Judo learning curve.

The Victorian State Team had a very successfulNationals 2014 in Wollongong over the QueensBirthday weekend, coming home with 63 Shiai and 2Kata medals, taking out second place on the Shiaimedal tally.
Many thanks must go to the dedicated panel of StateCoaches, who have spent the last four months or sobuilding on the work of the Club Coaches at Statetraining sessions to help the players achieve theseresults – Maria Pekli, Daniel Kelly, David Nabulsi,Doug Noack, Paul Coughlan, Hunter Richardson andnew coaches Mick McMahon, who did a lot of workwith the AIS Draftees and Dave Karney, who was awelcome addition to the Junior coaches. Thanks alsoto those who helped out with managerial duties attraining and Nationals – Jenny Nabulsi, EoinCoughlan and Pat Dafter – and to Ben Donegan andIan Wallis, who helped organise the hoodies andpatches.
We had a large team this year – 25 Females and 69Males, who entered 126 shiai events and 5 kataevents, with a tally of 72 medals compared with 49last year, so there is a huge improvement innumbers.
Our Kata pairs were down, due to injury, butcongratulations to Janet Lambert and Jenny Beaton, who were back on the podium with a Silver in Ju-No-Kata after disappointment last year, and to CoreyLeckie and Zac Eyssens, who got Bronze in theJunior Nage-No-Kata.
The Masters and Kyu Grade divisions, had moreentries than 2013 – we hope more players will thinkabout entering these next year, spread the word inthe clubs!
Several players contested multiple divisions andquite a few won multiple medals –We had a lot of new players (since I have records,2012) on the team this year, 14 of whom won medalsand others of whom came close to the medal fights, which is a fantastic result.
The weekend showcased some terrific judo, particularly on Monday, where the Junior and SeniorBoys and Girls produced some excellent throws –Nicole Akhmedova and her sacrifice techniques,Stefan Javni and his super upright judo, Louis Mottwho won every fight emphatically, as did Will Breich,Ben Ayzelman who lost his first fight but battled backto win a well deserved Bronze – young players, fromclubs all over the State, who we look forward toseeing rise through the ranks.
Thanks to everyone, both players and their families, who made Nationals 2014 such a success – all theplayers, not just those who won medals, trained hardand fought well and should be proud of their efforts.Keep up the training getting ready for Nationals 2015!

2014 saw Judo Victoria host sevencompetitions through the year including our twopremier events the Southern CrossInternational Open and Victorian State Titles.
Over the course of the year we received over1,000 entries to these events with SCIO andthe State Titles each attracting over 200entries.
Throughout the year our seasonal competitionstend to attract slightly less, but still everimproving numbers at around 100 to 150entries per tournament.

JFA Junior Grading SystemMost clubs are now conversant with the JFAJunior Grading System. The system givesmore flexibility to club instructors and providesa straight through flow through the junior ages,to cadets and onto seniors. It has been a fairlylong familiarisation period.

2015/16 is about the professionalisation of Judo, it is about developing the infrastructure to enable growth
Strategic focus for 2015/16
2014 was a year of a great deal of activity behind the scenes for JVI.As a committee with a renewed focus, we performed a great deal ofdue diligence on our own organisation, dissecting all informationavailable to us to identify and quantify our challenge areas, not onlytoday but challenges we anticipate to arise over coming years. Wehave been working to ensure we listen to and respond to the trendsbeing articulated by bodies such as the Australian Sports Commission– namely the professionalisation of amateur sports, more colloquiallyknown as the nab auskick affect. As a committee we have devised fourstrategic focus areas:1. Embed a sustainable operating model – judo in Victoria must
become bigger and survive longer than any committee or group ofvolunteers. We must build something that will endure and grow nomatter who is involved in driving the sport
2. Ensure financial security – Our financial outlooks must movebeyond the year-to-year horizon and shift from outdated capitationmodels
3. Develop high performance culture – Success breeds successand we must ensure maximise our potential for this
4. Prepare for growth – we cannot expect the sport to groworganically, and even if it did we are not currently set up to receiveit. We must prepare the organisation and its member clubs andposition them for sustainable growth.
At the strategic planning day we focused on ‘enabling internaldevelopment’ and have since devised a number of key member ledinitiatives which will come to life over the coming twelve months. Iwould like to extend a great deal of thanks to all of those who attendedand bought with them such enthusiasm, passion and most importantlyan open mind about the future. I am excited to see what we canachieve together.

JudoVIC Brand Relaunch
When I first joined the committee in 2013, whatastonished me first when looking through thebooks of the organisation was the reliance onmembership as the primary funding to run theorganisation.
I remember a discussion with some of our eliteathletes as they reflected on the personalexpenses incurred in chasing their Olympicdreams, and I recall a separate conversationabout investing in our events at which I wassurprised at the low-investment due to lack ofavailable funds.
It was after these conversations that I sat with anumber of my fellow committee and set aboutgrowing our sponsorship base.
After arranging some initial meetings, Irecounted one of the early organisations weapproached. Mid-way through the meeting, hepulled out an ipad and googled us. His nextremarks I will never forget “come back andspeak to us when your organisation moves outof the 1980s”.
It was this discussion which began aninteresting rebranding journey for us. We havepartnered with marketing agency LocalPeoplesa proud Melbourne based agency with sportsbased experience with organisations such asNike, Football Federation of Australia, TennisAustralia, Auskick and now adding Judo to their
repertoire. They have been instrumental indesigning us a new style guide, merchandisingstrategy and advertising campaigns
Over 2015 we will roll out our new visualidentity across all of our communicationschannels, documents and other assetsincluding a new look for our state squad. Wewill also be launch three marketing campaignsaimed at both member recruitment andattracting sponsorship.
LocalPeoples will also be working with us torevamp our premier tournaments over 2015/16so stay turned for further updates on this front.
Whilst for many of you this will be the first timehearing of the rebrand, I would like to thank thecommittee and LocalPeoples for all of their hardwork and patience in pulling this together. Thiswill go a long way to helping us professionalise, market and ultimately grow our sport here inVictoria.

The symbol is sufficiently gender neutral
The Head and inner V shape provide a nod to the VIS logo
Overlapping ribbon provides a nod to the AIS logo
J shape subtly creates a link back to the Japanese heritage
without being overtly or stereotypically Asian
V ribbons pays homage to the JudoGi lapels
The VIC abbrecivation is offset from Judo typeface – we are both representatives of the sport and of our state
The brandmark aims to take a modern and professional abstraction on the
representation of a judoka
V shape is iconic in Victorian sport and something all players
across all sports aspire to play for
