It is with considerable enthusiasm and pride that I welcomeyou all to this special celebration of ten years of Jazz atJuilliard. As I have said so often during these ten years,

I cannot imagine how Juilliard survived without jazz beforethe initiation of this great program.

Our young jazz artists and the members of the faculty havebecome an integral part of the Juilliard experience, throughcollaborative performances and concerts and tours beyondthe walls of our School. With creativity, energy, discipline, and pure joy, Juilliard’s jazz program has had a transformative impact on Juilliard and theworld beyond. We look forward to many more years of swing and joyful sounds withinthe halls of this great School through the creativity of our jazz artists.

Greetings Jazz Community,

As the Juilliard Jazz department celebrates its 10th year,I express sincere gratitude to all who have contributedto this milestone. As a musician who learned in the

classroom as well as on the bandstand, it has been my distincthonor to replicate that environment in this educationalinstitution. Along with our incredible faculty, I grew up withthe great fortune of witnessing the giants of jazz – theinspiring musicians who created this art form. The lessonsthat one must learn about how to play jazz music come fromperformance experience, and playing with the masters on a consistent basis allows one todiscover which techniques are most effective. When you implement what you learn fromthe classroom to the bandstand, you get the feedback that molds you into the bestmusician possible.

Our talented students have grown as young artists by studying and performing withseasoned artists as well as with their peers. They tour on the road, gaining the skills necessaryto network for a career in jazz and to navigate in diverse cultures. We often give the studentsopportunities to teach, which we feel is essential to the success of their careers and to theirmusical development. We give them as many performance opportunities as possible in anarray of environments and situations so everyone understands how to effectivelycommunicate this music, whether in a small venue, concert hall, or stadium. We believe inthe philosophy “each one, teach one” – that every student be afforded the opportunity tobe a sideman and a leader and understand what it means to be in each role. Juilliard Jazzstudents are able to function and perform as a group, but they also have remarkableimprovisation abilities. They want to be challenged by our faculty, by their peers, guest artistsand by themselves. We expose the students to today’s jazz masters, the byproduct of whichis for the great artists to employ them. Thus, for the next generation of jazz musicians, thefuture of jazz is here.
