During the period 2nd to 4th June

2012, St Andrew‘s Church,

Epworth, will be hosting an

exhibition in celebration of the

Queen‘s Diamond Jubilee. To mark this

special event, items of memorabilia, printed

articles, photographs, memories etc spanning

the life of the queen are required by the organising

committee for use during the activity period. We

have already been offered the loan of a medal and

service sheet received by a male chorister for

singing in the coronation choir. He will also visit the

exhibition and share his experiences of the event.

Any items on loan to the church will, of course, be

After completion of a new extension we have had a very busy time here at Coneygarth Farm

Day Nursery. A new viewing area for the Out of School Club has enabled children to see more of the

farm and has been a huge success. After Christmas the children were able to watch the Lincoln Red cattle

who all calved within 2 months. It is very exciting to watch the cows and sheep, from such a short

distance and see how they behave.

Next came lambing which is always a huge success with with the children and parents, this coincides with

the Easter Holidays so the children at the holiday club also enjoyed this experience.

This month all the sheep have been brought in for shearing and 3 hours later they were back grazing in the

field enjoying the sun without their winter coats on and thankfully all the baby lambs found their

mummies again!!!

These are just a few of the things the children can experience at the nursery along with tending the

vegetable garden, collecting eggs from the resident hens and

playing in the nursery wood, large garden and willow den and

of course covering all aspects of the Early Years Foundation

Stage.

We are now busy preparing for the summer holidays which

will be action packed and exciting!

If you are interested in either Nursery places or Holiday

Club (5-11yrs) do not hesitate to contact us and arrange a

visit ALSO don't forget we offer 15 HOURS FLEXIBLE

FREE provision for 3-5 year olds.

May 18th was a competition night and it really had members of

Axholme Camera Club members scratching their heads. The final competition

of 2010 - 11 season was entitled "Elements - Earth, Wind, Fire and Water". A vast array of very inter-

esting and enterprising prints were entered from most of the members, plus there was some very artistic

creativity from others.

The judge, Mr Ernie Jackson from Doncaster openly admitted it was his first time every that he had come

across a competition with such an ambitious title. However, he set about to deliver the best print, firstly

looking for technical quality while also portraying the competi-

tion title. He had difficulty both in the coloured and Mono

sections, having narrowed them down to two print in each

class. In the colour he was unable to separate the two so

awarded both 20 points. Sandy Sanderson entered a very

creative print called "Consuming the Elements" and Ivan

Sedgewick put forward a Yorkshire landscape including a

steam train in motion, called "Northern Lights Elements".

While in the Mono section the judges answer was to ask for a

coin as there was nothing between them, nevertheless, after

very close scrutiny he gave David Neale 20 points for his print

entitled "Behind the Waterfall" and 19 points to George

Fiddler for his print titled "Sunshine After the Storm" .

Other high scorers on the night were Jan Neale 19 points and

an 18 points in the mono section, Guy Myers 18 points and

Peter Webster 18 points in the colour section.

Later Mr Ernie Jackson thanked the club for inviting him to

judge such a display of good quality prints.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT-

Fieldside/Battle Green/Studcross/Thurlow/

Memorial Hall Car Park areas in Epworth =

Youths causing annoyance and anti-social

behaviour.

The problem with youths causing annoyance con-

tinues around this area. Analysis from reports to

police shows that the main days of complaints are

on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between

4pm and 2pm. The main crime being committed

in this area is criminal damage, particularly to vehicles. We are therefore re-iterating the message that it is

in your best interest to park, if at all possible, in your garages or on your driveways, and perhaps review

your car security arrangements as an extra precaution. The majority of criminal damage is being commit-

ted on a Tuesday and Saturday between 10.00 pm and 01.00 am.

We appeal to residents to call in should they witness such behaviour, drawing their attention to the fact

that we need detailed descriptions of offenders, particularly clothing (colours/motif‘s) as this gives us a

better chance of ‗getting the right person‘ when we stop large groups of youths around the village. We

are working closely with our partners to resolve the issues and are patrolling the area at times we receive

calls for service the most. The team are also paying passing attention throughout their shift at sporadic

times.

You are our eyes and ears so please help us and report anything you think requires our attention. Our

non-emergency number is 0845 6060 222. If you think a crime is in progress please call 999. It is always

best to report it at the time, doing so retrospectively makes it difficult to catch the culprits making life for

those nearby a misery.

Update:

We are still receiving calls relating to groups of youths gathering in the car park. We have

been given some registration numbers of vehicles involved and have given relevant warnings

to those concerned. Should they not heed to our warning there is the potential for their

vehicle to be seized by police. Patrols continue to monitor the car park and have noticed the

groups only gather when the hall is not being used. We are working with our partners and

the Thurlow Playing Fields Association to try to resolve these issues. We encourage local

residents observing such anti-social behaviour in these areas to contact us on 0845 6060 222

with as much detail and descriptions of offenders as possible.

Carrside Changing rooms.

A substantial amount of damage has been caused to the changing rooms on CARRSIDE in Epworth. Van-

dals have entered the property and have smashed walls inside and have pulled the boiler from the wall.

This has caused flooding. The changing rooms are run by dedicated local residents who give up their own

time and money to maintain the facilities for the benefit of those using the pitches and the wider commu-

nity. This damage caused by offenders has spoilt it for everybody else. We would like dog walkers, run-

ners, cyclists, walkers, horse riders, users of the changing rooms and anyone else passing them to report

anything vaguely suspicious. Although we are paying particular attention we value any information relating

to either anti-social behaviour or damage at the premises.

Our non-emergency number is 0845 6060 222 or Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111.

UPDATE – We have received very few calls for service since this incident was reported, however police

continue to monitor the area.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live Your Local History Adapted by Anthony Catherall

EPWORTH FREE SCHOOL The Rev. Henry Clifford, Rector of Wroot and predecessor of Samuel Wesley, set up Epworth

Free School in 1711. Seven trustees and their heirs were appointed. The schoolmaster was provided with a house. Some land was allocated to provide for the school:

Schoolhouse croft 1 acre 1 rood 12 perches Church field 3 roods 5 perches

South field 1 rood 27 perches East field 1 rood 28 perches Bellshaw 3 acres 3 roods 2 perches

Total: 6 acres 2 roods 34 perches.

A limit of 14 scholars was fixed when the school opened. In 1829 the number was increased to 20. Instruction was restricted to reading. Parents wishing their children to be taught writing

had to pay 2/6 or 3/- (pre 1971 currency) a quarter. No child could stay at school for more than three years. In 1856 the school abolished any payment. In 1873 the Council of Education

suggested that a school be set up to cope with 120 boys or 100 infants on or near the site of the Free School. A trustees meeting of 1874 was asked that the school be used as a Parish School,

but this was refused. However, a piece of land in Battle Green was bought to set up a Board School. Mr. George Mason the master, opened this on October 6th 1876. The Free School finally

closed in July 1880 and the 20 free scholars were transferred to the Board School.

Now & Then – Then & Now No. 27 By Anthony Catherall

This month and every month; see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today‘s images!

For me, one of the nicest scenes I have of old Epworth circa 1930‘s.

The Isle of Axholme railway opened in 1905 and the bridge over the upper end of the High street

is clearly seen above, as is the junction with Battle Green left.

The station entrance was up a slope on the right just before the bridge.

Much in fashion then, was the carefully manicured curved top hedges with trees adjoining, this

view so pleasing on the eye. I am told people loved walking along this section from the railway station towards

the village. Two of the only features that survive today are the telegraph pole and Thurlow House on

the left from where these pictures were taken. My picture below, taken on 20 August 2007 doesn‘t I believe

have quite the charm of Epworth eighty years ago.

Summer Holidays

It‘s warm and sunny and dry – it must be summer! Now that‘s where you are wrong. For

years and years and years, even when I was a student many years ago, the warm, sunny

and dry days came bang on queue just as serious revision for exams began! And just as

exams ended and we looked forward to an extra long holiday, so the sun seemed to go on

holiday too.

By the time you read this issue of Arrow, exams will be over and results days still way off

– another six weeks or so to ‗top up the tan‘ or endure the rain. But the day of reckoning

will soon be here – cries of delight for some and howls of disappointment for others.

So let‘s resolve to encourage those young people we know whilst they await those all so

important results. Then we can be there to support them whatever the outcome. We can

rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. Even if we don‘t person-

ally know anyone sitting exams, we can still ask God to bless them whatever their results.

As a God who loves us, He surely will.

Dear Carolyn Editor of the Arrow

Our garage roof needed re-roofing, so we contacted

Eliot, the proprietor of EPG Roofing Ltd. Having

found his advertisement in The Arrow. He arrived

exactly on time gave us a very reasonable quote,

and carried out the work with first class materials

and stayed until it was completed, took away all

rubbish, and did an excellent tidying up job. We

were delighted with his professionalism and

workmanship.

We shall certainly use the Arrow again, when

searching for a local tradesman, or any other

service.

SECRET THINGS

Until May I had never heard of the word ‗super-injunction,‘ and I don‘t ex-

pect it will ever be something I will use, or have much to do with. In other words I

will be surprised if the existence of such a thing changes my life. In fact I must have

been living on another planet, as even though the media were saying the that the name

of the footballer concerned was common knowledge, it was not knowledge to me—

not until the name was broadcast on the news bulletins.

In friendship, community and business keeping secrets can be a good thing, and we call it keep-

ing confidences. This is especially important in health care , financial institutions and ministry, in the Roman

Catholic church the confession is secret. The word ‗secretary‘ derives from the knowledge of having the

secrets of another. However where there is said to be a public interest then secrets are alleged to be

bad, and corrupt.

I can‘t think that whatever the footballer has done will affect me. I can see though that to the

other injured party there is an apparent miscarriage of justice, for at the very least the law does not ap-

pear to be operating without fear or favour, but in a partial way to those who have the influence that

money gives.

But we all have our own secrets, and we all share special secrets with those near and special to

us. I have been told things in the past, and been told not to tell the wife or husband concerned. There is

trust to the person we tell the confidence, and the people who know it with us from the start. All com-

munity has trust, both secular and sacred. So let‘s continue to keep our secrets in good faith, trusting one

another.

Rev David Leese, Wesley Manse, 37 high Street, Epworth.

Epworth Primary News Letter

Sleepover Success – even without the

sleep!

Around 35 children had a great time on our

first F.O.E.s Sleepover on a Friday night in

May in school. The children had evening and

night playtimes, completed the Nightline,

watched a DVD and played on the computers

as well as staging an impromptu Talent Show.

Thank you to F.O.E.‘s for organising the event

and to committee members and staff for stay-

ing with the children. We raised about £300

for the school which we are putting towards

our new cooking area.

Breakfast Club

This term we have started a Breakfast Club.

The children can be dropped off at school any

time after 7:45am. For just £2.50 per session

the school provides before school care and a

healthy breakfast. We already have several

children coming each morning and will be

running the Club up to at least Christmas –

but hope to make it permanent with enough

children using this facility.

School Residentials

All our children in the Juniors have the op-

portunity to take part in a Residential visit.

Year 5 children stayed at an Environmental

Education Centre in Hathersage last term,

while the other 3 year groups have their visits

this term. Children in Year 4 stayed at the

Kingswood Peak Venture centre for an ad-

venture activity stay while the Year 3 s had

just one night away in May at Austerfield Field

Studies Centre.

This leave the Year 6 children who will shortly be going away for their stay at the Seacliffe Ho-

tel in Whitby. This is a long standing tradition of the school that the children have been looking

forward to all year.

The children gain so much from their visits. I am grateful for the willingness of school staff to

give up their time to take the children.

With best wishes

John Hodgkins

On the first Monday of the month, instead of the usual second, mem-

bers of the Flower Club were entertained by June Borrowdale, a North

East Demonstrator from Carlton-in-Lindrick with her demonstration

entitled ―Buds, Blooms and Twigs‖. June used twisted willow, contorted hazel and silver

painted materials for her ―twigs‖ and created beautiful designs with snapdragons, tulips of different shades,

carnations, tiny orchids and chrysanthemums amongst many others. She decorated a large screen with ivy

and shamrock chrysanthemums and used dainty red roses, completing the beautiful and original arrange-

ment with Gloriosa Lilies, a flower new to many of the members. For another arrangement June created a

cage into which she inserted honeysuckle, campanula, purple flocks, stilby and a rose named Rosamunde

which represents the white rose of Yorkshire and the Lancastrian red rose.

To conclude the evening and in celebration of the club‘s 50th anniversary

year, June created a golden anniversary arrangement using gilded palm leaves,

gilded fatsia, sphinx roses, golden yellow carnations and tiny cream orchids.

As she demonstrated June gave one or two teaching points and told us of

her experience of being examined to become an Area Demonstrator. She

also told us of the honour she felt at being chosen to be part of a team to

display at Chelsea Flower Show next year.

The enjoyable evening was concluded with a raffle and the usual tea and

coffee.

The next meeting of the flower club will be on Monday 11th July at

7.30p.m.in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey when Norman Britton

from Finningley will entertain with an evening entitled ―Bonsai with School

Tales‖.

Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Rainbows at the Fire Station

Belton Rainbows enjoyed an exciting trip to Epworth Fire Station as part

of their ‗People who help us‘ theme last term. The Fire Station Officers

gave a tour of the station, letting the girls try on their fire fighting

uniforms and helmets.

The Firemen also gave the Rainbows important instructions about what

to do if they found a fire at home and how to ring for the Emergency

services.

The girls were also able to explore the Fire Engine and all the equipment

on board.

To finish the evening the Rainbows were allowed to try out fire fighting

techniques with high pressure water hoses.

A great visit was had by all and our thanks to the Fire Officers on duty who gave up their time to show us

round and make the evening fun and informative.

Rainbow Guides are part of the International Girl Guide Movement and from Rainbows, girls can move up

to Brownies and usually on to Guides.

We are actively looking for leaders to re-start the Epworth/Haxey Guide Units so that our enthusiastic

and rewarding Rainbows can continue to enjoy all that Girl Guiding can offer right through into their teens

and adulthood.

Could you give some time and energy to lead or help with our local Guide Unit?

It is great fun, very rewarding and there is lots of support and events for Leaders too. It just takes

someone to come forward to offer their time and energy to get a Guide group going again!

Garden Open for NGS 23 & 24, 30 &31 July 11:00am to 4:00pm Fieldhouse Farm Field Lane Wroot

Could there be a more enjoyable way to give to charity than an enjoyable and relaxing couple of hours

strolling around a beautiful garden, pausing to have a cup of tea and sample delicious homemade cakes?

Sue Dare Garden Designer and owner designed this garden 8 years ago as a garden to walk around and

relax in and to provide a stage for exuberant planting.

Paths lead around large borders which include cottage and prairie style planting, a pond with decked seat-

ing area and colourful planting, willow structures, metal and ceramic sculpture, water features, bamboo

screen clothed in climbers, small shade garden, topiary, a poly tunnel and green house with productive

vegetable garden and lots of seating areas.

There is also a sculpture trail around the garden with many interesting and unique sculptures in a variety

of media e.g. wood, metal, wire, glass, and ceramic. In the house there is a small art exhibition with wa-

tercolours, oils, acrylics and painting on silk plus small ceramic sculpture, and fused glass jewellery. And if

you have any Garden Design questions or problems Sue will be happy to talk to you.

This gardening year has been exceptionally challenging with the extreme cold weather of autumn followed

by an exceptionally warm

dry spring with a late air

frost. We have had to

work extra hard to fill

the gaps left by the large

plants and shrubs killed

by the difficult weather.

We decided to see this

as an opportunity to

revitalise our planting

and have grown lots of

annuals to fill the gaps

whilst more permanent

planting gets going. So

those of you who have

visited the garden before

will find we look a bit

different and hopefully

more colourful than

ever.

Traffic Lights

Dear Readers,

When approaching traffic lights, stop at or just before the stop line and then apply the hand brake and

select neutral. Never pull up to close behind other traffic at lights, leave yourself enough room and always

stop your vehicle so that you can see the rear tyres of the vehicle in front on the tarmac. By doing this

you‘re able to manoeuvre around them should they stall or breakdown and if an approaching emergency

vehicle wants to pass you will have the room to get out of the way,

At the lights, try to keep an eye on the lights controlling the other routes. As soon as they turn amber,

consider selecting first gear and prepare to release the handbrake as your lights should go to green in the

next few seconds.

If you can‘t see the other lights, look for signs of the traffic slowing as their lights go to red. Use this an-

ticipation to your advantage but never move off before your lights turn green. This advanced observation

at traffic lights can speed up your progress. Look ahead and if there are several lanes choose the lane of

least ‗resistance‘- the one with less traffic in it or the one without the slow- moving lorry or bus. Often

the inside lane is empty which not only gives you a clear run, but also means you won‘t get held up by

other traffic that will have to stop to turn right.

Observe the traffic you can see beyond the lights. Often lanes will merge.

Aim for the lane that lets you make the best progress.

Time your arrival at traffic lights when they are green. If you see a red light ahead, lift off the accelerator

to delay your arrival instead of ‗steaming‘ up to the light and having to brake firmly and change gears.

Always be aware of drivers running red lights, also keep an eye out for the peddle cyclist who ignores the

red as this trait is increasingly common on today‘s crowded roads.

Making well- timed intelligent and planned progress on busy roads is a uniquely satisfying experience-

especially when you slip effortlessly pass the high-revving, push-in-at-any-cost driver who rocketed by you

moments earlier only to end up in the wrong lane at the traffic lights.

tute of Advanced Motorists website at
