change is part of life. How a person — or company — handles change can lead to success oreventual failure. For example, a major transformation has taken place in the lives of manyresidents of new orleans since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. Meanwhile, an adjustment

of another sort has been required recently for sedan and limousine providers that are facing stiffcompetition from upstart, for-hire on-demand car services.

Both of these events — the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and therecent growth of on-demand car services — has forced LimousineLivery to change course as a company. During the past decade, thebusiness has changed ownership and increased its focus on bus andmotorcoach transportation. Today, the New Orleans, LA, transportation provider has an

approximate fleet of 50 vehicles, the majority of which are sedansand limousines. However, the company now has 10 small to mid-size buses, with plans to expand its bus fleet and service in thecoming years.Limousine Livery services include hotel and airport transfers/shut-

tles, corporate and convention transportation, wedding and other spe-cial event transportation, crew transport for the oil and gas industry, and global customized reservation shuttle services. “With bus transportation, we are very strong in the New Orleans’

corporate meeting and convention busi-ness. We work with groups that needtransportation for 10 to 6,000 people,”Limousine Livery President ChristyDirks said. She owns the company, and works

alongside her husband, Aaron Dirks, whois director of business development.“We help customers who are looking

for transportation in New Orleans andsurrounding areas. This includes conven-tion, hotel and airport shuttling, as wellas transporting people to and from dinnerand off-site meetings,” Aaron Dirks said.“A lot of times, a group of corporateclients want to visit a plant or factorywhile in town. We can provide this typeof transportation as well.”According to the Dirks, Limousine

Livery has the largest number of hoteltransportation contracts in New Orleans, and has benefited from three decades ofproviding high-end service to The BigEasy marketplace. “Over the years, Limousine Livery

has built a solid reputation while trans-porting hotel guests,” Christy Dirkssaid. “Our reputation has helped usfind new customers and business seg-ments, along with building many last-ing relationships.”Along with local service, company

representatives can also provide globaltransportation connections for cus-tomers looking to travel well beyondsouthern Louisiana. These representa-tives work with reservation agents fromaround the world to reserve clients’transportation desires. This includestraveling schedules, rates, availability ofvehicles, meet-and-greet capabilities, key addresses and directions, and billingrequirements for every destination.“We started asking our local and out-

of-town corporate customers if we couldhelp with their global transportationservices to other cities and a good per-

centage of them said, ‘Yes, that would be great,’” Aaron Dirks said.“This is not a big part of our company’s focus, but it’s somethingwe offer for those customers who need this type of service.”

STARTING WITH A ROLLS ROYCE

Mel Clark found himself with quite a gift in 1984. At thetime, he was working as a part-time doorman at theRoyal Sonesta New Orleans, an historic hotel on

Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. During his doorman years,Clark, who also worked as a union crane operator, had developeda friendship with a frequent guest of the high-end hotel.Eventually, the friend gifted Clark a used Rolls Royce, telling himthat he should take the car and make some money by transportingpeople around town.

“One thing led to another, and Mel started a transportation busi-ness with that car. It was a unique scenario,” Aaron Dirks said. “Meleventually built his company to over 40 vehicles by providing one of

the largest luxury transportation services in New Orleans. Hefocused on the hospitality business, serving luxury properties withlimousine and sedan transportation.”Unfortunately for Clark, as well as many other business owners in

New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

“Limousine Livery suffered significant losses from the hurri-cane. These losses did not come from flooding, but rather theft andvandalism,” Aaron Dirks said.

By this point, Clark, who was in his 70s,was ready to retire. “This is when my wife (Christy Dirks)

became a part of the transportation indus-try and purchased the company. She saw itas an investment for our family and ourcity,” Aaron Dirks said. “My wife and Ifelt the hospitality industry would eventu-ally come back strong to New Orleans. Of

course, the risk was that something like Hur ricane Katrina couldhappen again, and further devastate the hospitality and conventionbusiness. These segments represent a large portion of the visitor basein New Orleans.”Christy Dirks is a graduate of the United States Military Academy

at West Point, and is a formerU.S. Army logistics officer. She later worked as a pharma-ceutical sales representative. “My wife Christy’s back-

ground includes transportationlogistics and sales. She hasbrought this expertise to ourpassenger transportation busi-ness,” Aaron Dirks said.“Christy took over LimousineLivery in June 2006. I joinedher in April 2007 after work-ing in financial services. I amalso a West Point graduate andan entrepreneur.”Once the Dirks took over,

their main goal for LimousineLivery was to return the busi-ness to its previous promi-nence by providing high-endtransportation services for thehospitality segment, namelythe area’s leading hotels. “We also started expanding

to other transportation seg-ments. This included trans-portation management forglobal corporations,” ChristyDirks said. “We built our affil-iate network to provide corpo-rate transportation service forour clients wherever they aretraveling.”With the Dirks’ military

background serving as a back-drop, the couple also lookedinto providing disaster supportservices. Limousine Liverywas able to secure a contractwith the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency (FEMA).“We performed a significant

amount of work under thatcontract in 2007 and 2008 due

to Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Gustav,” Christy Dirks said. “Therewere a number of times when we helped evacuate hundreds of peo-ple in Louisiana and Texas on behalf of the federal government.”This work led Limousine Livery to also provide transporta-

tion services for nearby oil fields, as oil and gas productionremains prevalent in southern Louisiana and a large portion ofthe Gulf Coast.“We started getting calls from corporations to help them

provide disaster support. This included evacuating employeesfrom oil rigs due to approaching storms,” Christy Dirks said.“We have since grown this type of work, and now transportoil field service crews during normal operations. It’s nolonger just focused on evacuations.”Christy and Aaron Dirks also report there is now a larger focus

on tourism in New Orleans, one that rivals the pre-Katrina era. This, of course, is good news for the company’s different trans-portation segments. “For the first time since Hurricane Katrina, there has been a larg-

er yearly visitor count in New Orleans. This occurred in 2015,”Aaron Dirks said. “I see future growth in tourism continuing for thecity. There are some very big headwinds in place. For example, NewOrleans will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2018. City officialshave been preparing for this event. This includes a new terminal forLouis Armstrong International Airport. “Also, Copa Airlines has announced new nonstop service

between New Orleans and Panama, and there are negotiations inplace for new flights between New Orleans and such Europeancities as London and Paris. All of this should help build tourism forour city.”Aaron Dirks is a newly appointed at-large member of the New

Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau Board of Directors, and haslearned the true value of the city’s appeal to a large scale nationaland international audience.“New Orleans continues to be a top worldwide destination in many

different categories that are monitored. For example, it’s highly ratedas the best place to get married, to visit during Halloween, to visit forNew Year’s Eve, etc. The city keeps making these lists, and movingahead of traditional leaders in the tour and travel segment,” AaronDirks said. “Of course, New Orleans’ walkability, internationalcharm and architecture continue to draw both large conventions andsmaller meetings and events. As a result, area hotels and transporta-tion providers are benefiting.”Due to historically low natural gas prices, Aaron Dirks added that

an industrial boom is also taking place in southern Louisiana, espe-cially with its large petrochemical industry. This is helping grow thelocal economy. “Natural gas is a major component in the production of chemicals

and powering factories. I have heard that $20 to $30 billion is beingspent in the southern part of Louisiana on industrial projects,” AaronDirks said. “This could lead to additional growth over the next 10years in the New Orleans’ region.”Despite the disastrous events associated with Hurricane Katrina

over a decade ago, Aaron and Christy Dirks continue to see plen-ty of growth opportunities ahead for Limousine Livery and otherarea businesses. “While we all suffered from the loss of business after Katrina,

many companies are benefitting from being in New Orleans dueto our area’s resurgence and growth in tourism and travel,”Christy Dirks said. “The past five years have brought a lot of changeand hope for the region.”

The fact remains, however, that southern Louisiana, and the entireGulf Coast, are located in Hurricane Alley. Therefore, planning andpreparation stay important objectives for all citizens and businessesin the region.“There is a process everyone down here needs to go through to

make sure preparations are made for when another hurricane strikes. It’s just part of life in this part of the country,” Aaron Dirks said. “Asa company, we go through exercises, and have developed a disasterplan in the event that another catastrophe occurs. “Part of this plan involves our employees, our vehicles and how

we can keep important transportation services in place, such as forevacuations.”

GROWING THE BUS SEGMENT

Although the history of Limousine Livery has been focusedon transportation services that are primarily provided bylimousines and sedans, a turn of events recently in the trans-

portation industry has led company officials to grow their small andmid-size bus fleet. “We recognize that with the disruption from different on-demand

car services in the for-hire transportation industry, the small vehiclecategory is becoming disturbed and commoditized,” Christy Dirkssaid. “Therefore, we believe our future investments should befocused on the larger asset classes for transportation. Thisincludes different bus categories. “We have developed a business plan for aggressively compet-

ing in such contract bus work as shuttles, parking lot services, and regular trip making. In the future, this may include acquisi-tions, helping us enter different tour and travel categories.”

The Dirks feel that the same forces that led to the relatively recenttrend toward more on-demand for-hire car services may not be inplay for larger vehicle transportation, such as buses. This is due toincreased government regulations found in the bus industry.“What these on-demand car services have been able to avoid — in

some instances — when it comes to government regulations, couldbe more difficult if they decide to enter the bus segment,” AaronDirks said. “However, I feel the traditional transportation industrywill continue to be disrupted in the small vehicle category. The sizeof the market for the newer for-hire companies should remain thesame, and possibly grow. I see more stability taking place in the larg-er vehicle categories for traditional operators such as ourselves. Thisis an area of business where we will continue to grow.”As a longtime provider of small-vehicle transportation, Aaron

Dirks said he sees the need for more regulation to take place pertain-ing to on-demand car services. “I never thought any regulator would allow a person to pick up

another person in a for-hire environment, while in a personal car, without being assured that the driver was properly identified, hadgone through a background check and that the vehicle was validatedto be properly inspected,” Aaron Dirks said. “As an established com-pany, we have to follow these regulations. I feel the governmentshould either regulate everything or deregulate everything. Youshouldn’t have it both ways.”He also sees a time in the not-so-distant-future when driverless

vehicles will cut into the for-hire vehicle transportation marketplacewhen it comes to smaller vehicles such as sedans.“I’m not overly optimistic that the growth for human-driven, for-

hire, smaller vehicle transportation will continue in the future. However, I don’t anticipate driverless vehicles will influence the bus

industry within the next two decades,” Aaron Dirks said. “Rightnow, the biggest challenge for our company is the disruption of oursmall vehicle transportation services by the recent influx of new, for-hire on-demand car providers. We have answered this challenge byproviding a greater focus and investment in the bus category.”

THE VALUE OF QUALITYEQUIPMENT & CHAUFFEURS

As Christy and Aaron Dirks focus more on their company’sexpanding bus segment, it’s important for the couple to builda strong fleet of vehicles. This includes a focus on

sustainability and technical advances. “I’m an environmental engineer, and my wife has an

environmental science degree from West Point. Therefore,we have always been dedicated to living our lives as sus-tainable as possible,” Aaron Dirks said. “When Christy pur-chased Limousine Livery, she wanted the company to beforward-moving and a market leader in transportation sus-tainability. As a result, we now have some all-electricsedans in our fleet, and incorporate many sustainable practices in theoffice. This is a big part of our company’s culture, along with usingthe latest in technology, such as with our newer buses.”For example, the Dirks recently purchased a new Turtle Top VT3

mid-size bus that seats up to 17 passengers, and features some lighterweight, yet strong, materials for improved fuel economy. The VT3will be used for a wide variety of services, including executive meet-ing and convention-type transportation, according to Christy Dirks. “We try to highly utilize all of our vehicles. We will use the new

Turtle Top to transport people to and from high-end restaurants andhotels, and anywhere else they want to charter a vehicle,” she said.“Our goal is to always look for work that is the most profitable, while also providing the best use for each specific vehicle — given

upgraded features.”Other uses for the company’s new Turtle Top VT3 will include

crew transportation moves, airport shuttling and share-ride services.“We have been able to incorporate technology in our fleet of vehi-

cles for a long time, which includes all of our Turtle Top buses. Wehave found Turtle Top provides vehicles that are up-to-date, ahead ofthe market, impressive and in alignment with our mission as a trans-portation provider,” Christy Dirks said. “We were introduced toTurtle Top around 2009. The company’s executive vans have beenmarket differentiators for us when it comes to providing transporta-tion to executive groups looking for an experience in luxury.

“When the new model (VT3) came out, it was not a difficult deci-sion for us to purchase. Turtle Top has been able to introduceimprovements in all of the major categories that we look for, such asbody styling and forward-leading technology. In our business, firstimpressions are a big deal. This is true for both the interior and exte-rior of a vehicle. Turtle Top vehicles provide very good first impres-sions, along with luggage capabilities and overall efficiency.”These high standards are important for all of Limousine Livery’s

vehicles. When it comes to the company’s entire fleet of buses, fromexample, key amenities and features involve upgraded flooring andseating material, plenty of space for passengers and an overallimpressive look. “All of our vehicles also utilize GPS tracking and digital status

updates that communicate with our operating software, and ultimate-ly, our customers,” Aaron Dirks said. “Our chauffeurs also have dig-ital tablets, serving as mobile data terminals. “Our operating software can provide GPS awareness to various

groups and events, indicating where specific vehicles are located, and what time they are scheduled to arrive at a certain destination.”Christy Dirks added that Limousine Livery relies on a newer fleet as

well, with most vehicles purchased within the past five years. This way,

major repairs remain under warranty. The com-pany also employs two full-time mechanics.Properly marketing the company is another

important aspect to the success of LimousineLivery. Christy Dirks considers the company’sbranding to be fairly rigid and consistent. “The presentation of our brand, which

includes the location of our logos, is consistentfor our larger vehicle classes. It’s importantthat our branding is prominent,” she said.“We are also very diligent about cleanliness. We have spent a considerable amount ofmoney on our auto and bus washing equip-ment as well as our detail crew.We instruct ourchauffeurs to make sure they present our vehiclesin a proper manner and remain in great condition.“Frankly, it’s the performance of our

chauffeurs that brings the majority of our‘wows’ from customers. It’s important that theycan successfully interact with riders. It does helpto have vehicles that are new, feature a freshdesign and are not common in the marketplace.”

Due to its business of providing high-end transportation services, officials at Limousine Livery seek chauffeurs (the name companyofficials chose to use to refer to all of their drivers) who meet twodistinct requirements: No. 1, they must possess self-satisfaction andhappiness when serving others; and No. 2, they must possess a highand flexible work ethic. “The combination of these two features seems to produce our best

performing professionals,” Christy Dirks said. “We invest heavily in

Limousine Livery dispatchers use the latest in technology to help the company's chauffeurs succeed.

New chauffeurs also participate in ride-alongtrips with our trainers before being allowed to perform a ride on theirown. We also place new chauffeurs in lower risk services until wecan validate their skillsand safety. Those chau -ffeurs who get over all ofthese hurdles will thenbe allowed to drive ourlarger asset vehicles.”Although driver shor -

tages have been report-ed by many bus/motor-coach operators acrossthe country, ChristyDirks said LimousineLivery continues toenjoy a high retentionrate. This is due, inpart, to the company’s philosophy of providing fair compensationand great working conditions. “I feel Limousine Livery remains a very respected firm in our

transportation marketplace. We rarely lose anyone to the competi-tion. I would say our overall loss rate in chauffeurs is below theindustry average,” Aaron Dirks said. “It’s important to make sure ournew chauffeur hires understand the seasonality of the transportationbusiness. Our lowest month can be 50 percent below in work com-pared to our peak month. Demand in the transportation business isvariable. There can be huge swings. Therefore, it’s important ournew chauffeurs are aware of these swings. We can help them plan

and budget throughout the year.”Despite this help, there are times when the unusual nature of the

transportation business is too much for some people to accept. Asbusiness owners, the Dirks recognize and understand these chal-

lenges, and know thatnot everybody is cutout for such work.“Until a person

actually goes throughsuch changes in workdemands, it’s hard toreally know if he/shewants to do this typeof job for a long peri-od. Some simply donot, and we under-stand. They may endup driving for a truck-ing company or chan -

ging professions altogether. This is just part of the challenge of oper-ating a transportation company,” Christy Dirks said. “The best wecan do is show respect for our chauffeurs, pay them well and providetime with good benefits. We also try to have a comfortable andhappy place for them to work and build a career. The same is true forall of our employees. This includes mechanics, dispatchers andoffice personnel. We have a staff of 120 people.”Limousine Livery’s facility in the heart of New Orleans is located

near Interstate 10, and not far from the French Quarter. It was pur-chased by the Dirks in 2011, and has since been expanded. “The original building has been around for 30 years, but we have

expanded by adding 6,000square feet for new officespace,” Christy Dirks said.“Geographically, we are ide-ally located for reaching themajority of our customers. This includes quick access tovarious hotels, the conventioncenter, the airport and down-town New Orleans.” Aaron Dirks added that the company’s facility is technology-

driven, and is employee-friendly for its staff of chauffeurs andother workers. “We have heavily invested in our chauffeurs’ lounge. It includes

reclining chairs, such as those found in movie theatres, and a mod-ern entertainment system,” he said. “The idea behind the lounge isto provide a comfortable place for our chauffeurs when they arenot driving. This is all part of providing a physical representationof our company’s spirit, making sure our chauffeurs understandthat they are very critical to our company’s importance in thisbusiness. We want all of our employees to be proud that they workfor Limousine Livery.”

DISCIPLINE, PASSION AND CARING

Being a hometown transportation provider, officials atLimousine Livery know the value of taking care of cus-tomers. The company’s valued reputation is at stake every

day. Therefore, customer service must remain strong. Christy andAaron Dirks rely on their experience in the military, when it comes

to satisfying various customer groups. “We have brought what we have learned in the military to our

company when it comes to customer service. Discipline, passionand caring are three core virtues that we try to instill and define foreach of our departments and service categories,” Aaron Dirks said. He outlined how each of these virtues can make a difference in

customer service when properly implemented by specific LimousineLivery employees:n Discipline — For chauffeurs, it’s important that they make sure

each Limousine Livery vehicle is ready to be properly presented tocustomers. The company’s chauffeurs must also be dressed andgroomed in a way that best represents Limousine Livery, and mustdisplay the right attitude at all times, in an effort to make some-body’s day special; n Passion — This virtue comes about by employees loving their

work and wanting to serve other people. It’s also about exhibitingpassion for their profession when answering the telephone, workingwith customers who have specific issues, and helping other peopletake care of challenging work-related demands; and,n Caring — Taking care of customers who are often far away

from home requires a unique type of service, one that also includesthe important virtue of “caring.” This often involves LimousineLivery employees “going the extra step” so that customers can expe-rience a positive “wow” factor. “I have been involved in a number of industries my entire adult

life. One thing remains the same: It’s easier to acquire and retain cus-tomers when you have a differentiation strategy in place that goesbeyond ‘price,’” Aaron Dirks said. “If you only haveprice as your main differentiator factor as a company,it becomes much easier for customers to leave. It’simportant to bring additional value — such as disci-pline, passion and caring. “With Limousine Livery being primarily focused

on specific markets and strategies as a transportationprovider, this also helps customers see the true value of our compa-ny. They are better able to understand the additional value we canbring to the table.” Christy Dirks added: “Performing quality work is necessary to

succeed. Our differentiators have also always been focused onimplementing forward-leaning technology, becoming more sus-tainable as a business and providing high-end assets.” Looking ahead, Christy and Aaron Dirks are working on devel-

oping a partnership between Limousine Livery and the couple’snew startup companies Joieful and MyAirportTrip.com. Theseentities offer curated experiences of all types in the New Orleansarea — from walking tours and swamp adventures to top localattractions — and also for-hire airport transportation options ulti-mately around the world. “Joieful is a tour and attraction ticketing and fulfillment platform.

We feel it will break new ground when it comes to supporting hotels

and ancillary services,” Christy Dirks said. “We are very excited tofurther build relationships with our customers through this new plat-form, and also with MyAirportTrip.com. It’s a way of finding morebusiness, as well as building additional transportation markets.”Both Christy and Aaron Dirks said they remain excited for what

the future holds for Limousine Livery, and the entire U.S. bus andmotorcoach transportation industry.

“We feel growth will continue in our transportation marketplaceover the next decade,” Christy Dirks said, “and that LimousineLivery will capture a large portion of this growth. “Operating a transportation company can be difficult, but anytime

you achieve something that is difficult in life, you gain a lot of prideand sense of accomplishment. We have been fortunate in the lastdecade to grow our business and do well, which brings a lot of pride. An added bonus comes from seeing further development take placein New Orleans. A transportation provider can help a city grow in somany ways. It’s all about helping people who are in need, includingthose times when natural disasters occur.”

The energy concept of BITZER’s Schaufler Academy received theDeutscher TGA-Award 2016 in the “New Building”category on April 12. The international training cen-tre is located in Rottenburg-Ergenzingen, Germany,on the grounds of the BITZER competence centrefor screw compressors. At the Schaufler Academy, heating and cooling

are provided by heat pumps, underground latentstorage (ice storage), a solar thermal collector and acombined heat and power system. “This concept underlines our commitment to

developing products for sustainable energy use andclimate protection. The academy allows us to pres-ent systems featuring BITZER components to ourcustomers in a direct way,” Volker Stamer, directorof the Schaufler Academy, said. “The ice storage system collects tem-porarily available cooling and thermal energy, which can be retrievedwhen it is required. This enables BITZER to balance the fluctuating ener-gy supply, while also using renewable sources of energy for space heat-ing and cooling.”Dr. Armin Walz, head of the company’s application engineering, said,

“We installed a heat pump with two BITZER ORBIT 8-scroll, typeGSD80295 compressors for the building’s heating and cooling. With theirhigh efficiency, at full-load and part-load, and wide application limits, thesecompressors are ideal for heat pump systems with reverse cycling.” From the beginning, the Schaufler Academy was designed to be a mul-

tifunctional building. The three-story building is 10 metres tall and hasfive rooms for theoretical and three areas for prac-tical training. Three training rooms can also be connected to

form a large lecture hall that can accommodate upto 120 people. With a gross floor area of 36,600-sq.-ft., the building can host several training cours-es at the same time.In addition, the Schaufler Academy contains

office space for the training staff and a cafeteria withseating for 110 people. It also serves as a new recep-tion building for the production facility atRottenburg-Ergenzingen. “Even before the Schaufler Academy opened its

doors, more than 150 training courses on CO2applications had already been offered in Rottenburg-Ergenzingen. Ourtraining courses are in high demand,” Volker Stamer, director of theSchaufler Academy, said. “In addition to our CO2 seminars, we also offercourses on ammonia applications and inverter compressors. We also offerhydrocarbon training courses, which tend to focus on the use of propanein refrigeration and air conditioning systems.”“With the academy, we’d also like to intensify the academy’s contact

with schools and universities as well as promote an interest in technologyamong young people,” Stamer said.Dates of individual training courses offered at the academy can be found

cams is greater than the angle of the thread pitch, which makes a wedge that will prevent the bolt fromloosening. tions for VDO REDI-Sensor™ Multi-App -lication TPMS sensors and VDO TPMS OEsensors and service kits, the catalog features anapplication section and an illustrated Buyer’sGuide with individual listings for REDI-Sensormulti-application sensors, OE sensor assem-blies and service kits.“Also included are torque specifications,

Thrasher Brothers Trailways, Birmingham, AL, celebrates its 45th year in business this year. Partof the celebration included the purchase of a Van Hool double deck coach.Alan Thrasher and Alyce T. Davidson, brother/sister owners of the family company founded by

their father, debated the idea for some time. “We had been half-jokingly discussing adding a double deck with ABC Companies for over a

year,” said Davidson. The renovated UMA show-coach was finished in silver paint.According to Thrasher, “I had been encouraged to talk to other charter owners who had made

that leap of faith. I learned that with aggressive marketing, the larger coach could produce a bettermargin for the investment.” Since driver availability is an issue,

Thrasher thinks this will help alleviate theshortage. “Quite often we send two buses with 35-

40 people on each 56 passenger coach. Weactually save the client money while reduc-ing our cost with the 81-passenger TD925.”The coach will initially serve on the

Casino Line run. “We’ve seen quite a decrease in traffic

during the economic downturn, and run-ning two coaches on a schedule was erod-ing profits. That will now be alleviated bythe 81-passenger coach. One driver, onefuel bill, one set of tires, one cleanup.”The finished product was presented to

the Thrashers at the 80th Annual Trailwaysmeeting in Ft. Myers, FL. After Roman Cornell presented the coach at an outdoor luncheon,Thrasher told the crowd that it was apparent the double deck coaches are here to stay. “Double-deck coaches are standard in Europe, and Van Hool has developed a good product for

service in the United States. The used ones are not going away, and the ABC renovation plan helpsprovide a cost effective way to repurpose these coaches in the private charter market.” ABC Companies’ offerings include new and pre-owned full-size highway coach equipment,

mid-size shuttle transport vehicles, and advanced design heavy-duty transit equipment. ABC offersan after-sale service network for service and repairs, collision services and OEM and quality after-market parts for transit, motorcoach and heavy-duty equipment from nine locations throughout theU.S. and Canada. Call 800-222-2875 or visit www.abc-companies.com for more information.

“Many of our customers have been requesting a more powerful program to provide the driv-ers with the systems and methods to handle problematic situations,” said Jeff Cassell, presidentof TAPTCO. “This program examines a number of real life situations and demonstrates how thedrivers should and should not react to diffuse the situations.“The course starts by showing a re-enactment of the video on YouTube, where the bus driv-

er and a passenger are screaming at each other leading to the driver punching the passenger aftershe spat at him. The program shows how the driver should have diffused the situation. “Included in the course are the practices taught in the police academies across the country by

The Verbal Judo Institute. Police face conflict and aggressive situations every day and thesepractices are very effective in preventing most situations from escalating. These practicesinclude: people have a need to be respected; people would rather be asked not told; people havea desire to know why; and, people prefer to have options over threats.“The program presents situations and shows drivers using these techniques to resolve the prob-

lems. The program is DVD based and also includes a trainer’s guide and a driver’s study guide.”In addition, the program guides discussions on: When can you refuse transportation?; Rights

to remove a passenger; What to do if a passenger does not have the fare; What to do if a pas-senger appears intoxicated as you approach a stop and many more such challenges. Visit www.TAPTCO.com for more information.

Motor Coach Industries (MCI), a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc., said U.S. Sen. JohnHoeven, R-ND, called the success of MCI’s Pembina, ND, manufacturing hub a thriving example ofU.S. manufacturing leadership, crediting North Dakota’s “strong, pro-business environment” andMCI’s history of “innovation and commitment to quality.”

MCI officials thanked the senator for his work in passing the Fixing America’s SurfaceTransportation (FAST) Act last December.

MCI Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Patrick Scully said. “When public transit hasaccess to FAST Act funds to replace or add coaches, MCI is able to continue employing workers righthere in Pembina, while supporting our local and nationwide supplier relationships.”Opened in 1963, MCI’s Pembina plant is the current home of the company’s D-Series models

including its Commuter Coach. According to MCI, Sen. Hoeven, who was North Dakota’s governor from 2000 through 2010, is an

advocate for public transit, secure infrastructure funding and improvements in public safety. There are more than 200 workers at MCI’s Pembina plant, which is the company’s primary final assembly facility for MCI’s D-Series coach. In February, MCI announced that NJ Transit exercised an option to add 332 Commuter Coaches to its fleet, following the transit agency’s July 2015

contract for 772 new Commuter Coaches. Together, the options increase NJ Transit’s MCI Commuter Coach purchase to 1,104 vehicles over the next sixyears. Visit www.mcicoach.com and www.newflyer.com for more information.
