Acting Vice-Principal: Omari White Administrators’ Message
We are excited to welcome Mr. Omari White, who will be our
Acting Vice-Principal until the end of the school year. Mr. White
comes to us with a wealth of experience – he has taught in the YRDSB
for 14 years and is also the Site Administrator for the International
Language Program at Tommy Douglas. When he visited the school at
the end of January, many students recognized him from his other
work in the YRDSB. We know that he will be an asset to our team at
Julliard. We would also like to thank Mme Beck for her support over
the past two months.
We would like to remind all families that Term One Report
Cards will be distributed on February 14, 2019. These report cards will
contain marks and comments for all subject areas assessed
throughout the term (September-end of January). If you have
questions about your child’s report card, please contact the teacher.
Formal interviews will not be conducted this term. Read through the
report card, and more importantly the Learning Skills & Work Habits
section with your child. What are some possible goals that your child
could set for him/herself in order to become a better student?
Over the past two months, we welcomed families for Bingo
Night and Family Math Night. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all the
teachers and parents who organized these events for our community.
Next up… Winter Carnival for students on February 8 and
Family Skate Night on Saturday, February 23 @ 7pm, at the
Woodbridge Arena (Hwy 7 & Islington). We will have some skates
available to be borrowed. Please note that all children require
helmets and gloves to skate. All money raised through this event will
support Ryan’s Well, an organization whose focus is to provide clean
water to communities around the world. We hope to see you there.

March 7 @ 7pm – School Council Meeting Hot Lunch / Pizza Volunteers
Are you able to volunteer 45 minutes – 1 hour of your time on Mondays or Wednesdays or Fridays to prepare the pizza or hot lunch bins?
If so, please contact the school office. Remember, without volunteers, these programs will not be available to families.
Please note, all school volunteers require a valid police check/VSS.
You must notify the school if your child will be absent due to bus cancellations.
PLEASE CALL 905-832-311.
See page 5 for more info.
Attendance & Safe Arrival
If your child is going to be absent:
- Call the school at 905-832-3311 or use EDSBY to report an absence or late, before 8:00 a.m.
- If calling the school (or if you receive a call from the automated system), you must follow the prompts until you receive a confirmation number. This confirmation number indicates that the absence has been recorded.
We will contact any parent/guardian of students for whom we have not been notified of an
absence. If we are unable to reach a parent/guardian, we follow-up with the Emergency
contacts. If at that point, we are unable to confirm your child(ren)’s absence, we will continue
to follow the YRDSB safe arrival protocol and contact York Regional Police. Please note that
you can call the school at anytime (including evenings and weekends) to report an absence.
Le caractère compte … Character Matters! In February, we will focus on “L’Initiative”. I will
recognize what needs to be done and do it, without
prompting from others.
At home: Adapted from : http://theparentcue.org/4-
ways-to-teach-your-kids-initiative/ 1. MODEL IT: We probably don’t go around announcing that we see the trash overflowing then tell everyone we’re going to take it out to the trash bin, but kids often need help making connections between what they see and what they can do about it. When we talk about the ways we’re taking initiative, our kids see it in action and can learn how to take initiative in their own life. 2. LET THEM DO IT: It’s often easier or faster to do the job ourselves, but why not give your kids a chance to put initiative into practice. If they come to you with a problem, help them think through how they could follow through and solve the problem. Then, let them do it. It might not be perfect, but at least they’re learning what it means to see something and do something about it. 3. BE PREPARED: Put everyday items in places where kids can reach them – charging cords, household cleaning items, etc. Encourage them to help around the house to get the job done faster. Sure they might need help sometimes, but they’re empowered to begin the job on their own. 4. PRAISE THE EFFORT NOT THE RESULT: Just because they’re doing the job doesn’t mean they’re always going to get it perfect. If we get mad or frustrated at them for how they do the job, they may not want to risk taking initiative another time. Celebrate them for taking a moment to try and do something they saw needed to be done. When it comes to initiative, starting and finishing the job is what matters; their skills to accomplish the job with excellence will develop over as they continue to practice.
In March, we will focus on perseverance, “La
persévérance”. I will not give up when things get
tough. I will stick to my goals and work hard to
achieve them, despite obstacles and challenges.
At home:
Reinforce a growth mind-set with children – ‘you may not
know it, yet, but with practice you’ll get it’. The key here is
to emphasize that we learn some things right away, and
other things may take some time. If we encourage children
to keep at it, even when they aren’t meeting with success,
we will teach them that we believe in them, we know they
can do it, and we’re here to help.
Providing children of real examples of when they’ve shown
perseverance and a growth mind-set are authentic ways to
help them understand that they can achieve their goals.
Learning to read or ride a bike, learning an instrument or a
sport, even learning a new language like French, are all
examples of how we can help children to see how they’ve
had success when they have persevered.
ARE YOU MOVING??
If you will be moving by September 2019, please let us know as soon as possible. We are currently projecting our student enrolment for September 2019. These numbers help us hire sufficient staff and support personnel. It is important that we know as soon as possible if your child will not be attending Julliard in September. Thanks for your assistance in preparing for the next school year. Please call our office with any information: 905-832-3311.
Last-minute, end-of-day, arrangements
In a school of 575 students, it can be very
difficult, to deliver end-of-day messages to
students regarding changes to their regular
mode of transportation home. While we
understand that occasionally, emergencies
arise, please let your child know the night
before if there will be a different end-of-day
routine. It is also important to send a note in
his/her agenda for the teacher. This ensures
the safety of all our students.
Remember: Bus passes are not permitted!
Students are only allowed to RIDE THEIR OWN
BUS.
Winter Weather & Recess All students are expected to go outside for recess except in extreme conditions (e.g., cold, windy, icy conditions, etc.). Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather: boots, snow pants, mitts, a hat and scarf are all essential items for our wintery weather.
Please note: If a child is healthy enough to come to school, then the child will be sent outside for recess. If a child is not well enough to go outside, it may be best to keep the child at home for one more day.
Humanity First & Student Council For the months of February and March, Julliard will be participating in a Food Drive
for Humanity First. Students are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items
(i.e., canned food – tuna, beans, vegetables, etc., cereal, baby food, etc.).
Please bring only non-perishable food items to school. We would also appreciate
if items were nut-free in order to maintain a safe learning environment for all of our
students. School Council thanks you for your support.
Summer Institute Looking for summer learning and fun activities for students entering Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8? Summer Institute offers academic, recreational and athletic programs and activities with intentional links to the Ontario Curriculum. The program runs for six weeks during July and August. It is offered at 11 school sites around York Region. For more information on dates, programs and locations, please visit the Summer Institute page
on www.yrdsb.ca. Registration opens in early March. Families will be able to register online, as well as in person or by mail.
ECO UPDATE ECO FACT: Canadians generate approximately 31 million tonnes of garbage a year (and only recycle about 30 per cent of that material). This means that Canadians generate approximately 2.7 kg of garbage per person each day. Credit: www.crcresearch.org/solutions-agenda/waste
Over the past months, Julliard’s EcoTeam focused on promoting waste-reduction at our school. In particular, we promoted the need to reduce the amount of food packaging and wrappers being used for snacks and lunches.
The EcoTeam discovered many candy wrappers littering our outdoor spaces as well as in the halls and stairwells at our school. Our grade 2 students took the initiative to collect and record the amount of snack packaging found in these areas. They created posters and visited classes, along with EcoTeam members, to share their discovery in the hopes of reducing the waste and litter problem. We are happy to report that we have seen an improvement already! Merci aux élèves en deuxième année!
We encourage all families to pack litterless lunches as often as possible and for students to “Boomerang” (bring home) any uneaten food items in order to prevent unnecessary food waste.
WHAT’S NEW: The EcoTeam is organizing a CLOTHING and TEXTILE Drive in January. We encourage all families to clear out closets and drawers of any unneeded clothing, outerwear, shoes, boots, purses and belts, and to drop them off at the school until February 13th. All clothing will help benefit a local charity “Cornerstone to Recovery” and will help the environment by reducing the amount of textiles entering our landfills.
Carnaval à Julliard This year, we will celebrate the Winter Carnival at Julliard on Friday, February 8 (inclement weather date – Feb. 11). On this day, students will participate in both indoor and outdoor activities throughout the day. Our grades 5 & 6 students will be preparing presentations and our grades 7 & 8 students will be team and activity station leaders. Students will also receive hot chocolate. If you can help to prepare/distribute the hot
chocolate, please contact the school.
EQAO for 2018-19 At Julliard, our Grade 3 & 6 students will be writing the EQAO assessment later this year. Please do not book appointments or vacations during the period of May 21-June 3, 2019. More information for families will be provided as we approach these dates. Thank you for your cooperation.
More fruits and veggies please Canada’s Food Guide recommends that children four to 13 years of age eat at least five to six servings of fruits and vegetables each day. One serving includes a medium piece of fresh fruit, half cup of cooked vegetables or one cup of salad.
How to help your child eat more fruit and vegetables:
Include fruit at breakfast; try adding half cup of banana slices or berries to cereal
Include fruit and vegetables in lunch bags daily
Keep washed fruit and vegetable sticks ready where children can easily reach them
Serve a healthy snack after school that includes a fruit or vegetable; try serving fresh fruit slices with cheese or yogurt
Set a good example by eating lots of vegetables and fruit yourself

EXTENDED HOLIDAYS Sometimes parents plan extended holidays during the school year. Parents who choose to remove a
student from school to travel are responsible for providing the learning experiences the student has
missed while away. This means that you might need to review or revisit the concepts missed with your
son/daughter.
Teachers are often asked to provide work for the time the student will be absent. The challenge is
that the child will need instruction prior to being able to do the work. While not a requirement,
teachers can sometimes assemble the work they think the child can do independently. Past
experience has shown that the children rarely do the work while on vacation.
If you want your child to do some school-related activity while on vacation, a daily journal written in
French and reading in French are great ideas. You could also give your child a ‘budget’ to spend
while away to help them understand exchange rates, currency and the value of money. Another
option is to use native-land.ca to look at interactive maps to learn about the Indigenous people of
the area you will be visiting.
When the child returns to school, she/he will need to “catch-up” on the missed concepts taught.
Parents will need to support this learning, as well.
Please remember that for each week of absence, a child will miss approximately 25 hours of
instructional time.

Lunar New Year at Julliard
The arrival of the new Lunar New Year will be celebrated at Julliard with an assembly for Gr 2-4 students on Tuesday, February 5th at 1:00 p.m. We encourage all students to wear any Oriental or any other traditional clothes on that very special day. Parents are welcome to attend the assembly.
BUS CANCELLATIONS DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
ALL SCHOOLS REMAIN OPEN During an Inclement Weather Day, the school is open and alternate programming may be provided depending on the number of students in attendance on this day.
PIZZA/HOT LUNCH - ALL STUDENTS REQUIRE A LUNCH If Pizza or Hot Lunches are scheduled on an Inclement Weather Day, the lunch will automatically be cancelled. You will receive a credit.
DROP OFF/PICK UP Students who come to school on an Inclement Weather Day may be dropped off and picked up through the parking lot loop. Pick up will begin at 2:15 pm. Please pick up your child by 2:30 pm.
School Bus Cancellation Notice To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements.
Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipitation, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast.
Please note the following;
A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans and taxis will not operate. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries which prevents the ability to cancel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology.
When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and rescheduled.
Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.
Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore, students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home.
Please note that school bus charters (trips) will not operate when home to school bus service is cancelled
A bus cancellation message will be available at www.schoolbuscity.com, by calling 1-877-330-3001, or by following @YRDSB and @YCDSB on Twitter.
Parents, students and school staff may also access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information: RADIO 590 AM 640 AM 680 AM 860 AM 1010 AM 1050 AM 1540 AM 1580 AM 88.5 FM 89.9 FM 92.5 FM 93.1 FM 94.9 FM 95.9 FM 97.3 FM 98.1 FM 99.1 FM 99.9 FM 101.1 FM 102.1 FM 104.5 FM 100.7 FM 105.9 107.1 FM TELEVISION CITY TV CTV Barrie CTV Toronto CP24 GLOBAL NEWS

Games
Using games to support your child at home to reinforce math concepts they are learning in class can be fun for the whole family! Games provide children with opportunities to explore mathematical concepts such as number concepts, patterns and relationships. It also allows them to use models and strategies they are familiar with (e.g., arrays, ten frames, skip counting). Some math games are commercially available, but most can be played with common household objects. In fact, most games that are not considered “math” games have many math concepts already in them. Try highlighting some of those concepts as you are playing.
For some game suggestions, you can go to the math page on the YRDSB website:http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/Math/Pages/default.aspx
