AMERICAN-ITALIAN CANCER FOUNDATION

DONOR REPORT

Dear AICF Friends and Donors,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the American-Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF), I would like to thank you for the generous contributions provided this year in support of our cancer research, early detection and patient support initiatives. We are deeply grateful for all gifts and grants received.

We are very proud of our International Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Program, which continues to provide financial support to talented Italian scientists in the US. The program selects only the best and brightest of young investigators who perform groundbreaking research in the fields of cancer biology and treatment in the top cancer centers across the country. This year, your generosity supported 14 post-doctoral fellows working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University, Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York University School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer, UT Southwestern Medical College, and others.

Our Mobile, No-cost Breast Cancer Screening Program remains one of the largest mobile mammography providers in New York, serving the City’s most vulnerable population: low-income, medically-underserved, ethnically and linguistically marginalized women. Your contributions have enabled AICF to screen over 4,600 underprivileged women this year, of which 700 required additional testing and were provided with information and referrals to diagnostic and treatment facilities.

We are also grateful for the support that the Executive Committee of our Scientific Advisory Board provides to AICF friends and cancer patients who reach out to our organization for medical referrals.

Lastly, we were honored to present the 2016 Prize for Scientific Excellence in Medicine to Mary-Claire King, PhD, and Armando E. Giuliano, MD for their outstanding contributions to the world of science and medicine. AICF is strongly committed to recognize excellence in cancer biology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

None of this would have been possible without your great generosity, support and dedication. A special thank you goes to our generous Board of Directors, our dedicated Scientific Advisory Board and its Executive Committee, our devoted volunteers, and staff.

We look forward to another year of great work together.

Thank you,

Daniele D. Bodini, Chairman

MOBILE, NO-COST BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMFor 30 years, AICF has been working to decrease breast cancer disparities by making screenings accessible to medically-underserved NYC women. AICF’s Mobile Care Clinic travels the five boroughs of New York City, five days a week, year around to provide no-cost mammograms, clinical breast exams and breast health education to those most in need. AICF’s goal is to eliminate the economic, linguistic and cultural barriers to screening by:

• Having no out of pocket cost for the women served.

• Eliminating the transportation obstacles to healthcare by bringing services directly to where women live, work or worship.

• Partnering with a network of community groups throughout NYC that have the cultural and linguistic capacity to reach the women and help bring them into screenings.

• Offering comprehensive breast health education to ensure that women feel empowered to be proactive about their well-being.

• Offering Patient Navigation services to provide women with the support and tools they need to access screening, diagnostic and treatment services in a timely manner.

AICF makes breast cancer screenings accessible to the uninsured and underinsured.

In August 2016, Rosa – a 49 year-old Queens resident – screened on our Mobile Care Clinic. Having no insurance, the only option for Rosa was to screen at a public hospital in Manhattan, which was difficult for her, due to her work schedule. “I don’t have to make the long trip to Manhattan anymore, and miss work to get screened” – commented Rosa, when she visited our mobile clinic. After two weeks from her appointment, Rosa received her screening report in the mail – all is well with Rosa.

AICF ensures the delivery of appropriate and timely cancer care.

AICF’s Patient Navigators work one-on-one with women to provide them with information and referrals to medically appropriate breast cancer screening, diagnostic testing and treatment. Our Program provides navigation services from recruitment to treatment and every point in between ensuring that women feel supported and empowered to make informed medical decisions.

Samantha is a 67-year-old cancer survivor, retired grade-school teacher and volunteer tutor. Her daughter-in-law heard our Mobile Care Clinic was coming to her church, Holy Child Jesus School in November 2016 and told Samantha about the screening event. Samantha had missed her breast cancer screening for a few years and was glad to have access to our Mobile Care Clinic. About a week after her appointment, our Patient Navigator called Samantha to talk about her screening results. It was

In Fiscal Year 2016-2017, we held 271 breast cancer screening events, where we served 4,622 New York City women.

THANK YOU We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our volunteers & interns:

recommended that Samantha have diagnostic testing including a biopsy. With the assistance of our navigator, Samantha scheduled her

additional testing in December and shortly after, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In January, she had her surgical consultation and went

on to have a mastectomy in March 2017. Samantha is continuing her treatment at a hospital in Manhattan. Our Navigator recently spoke

with her to check on her progress, she is doing well and hopes to have a full recovery. Samantha was very grateful for our services

and said, “I appreciate everything AICF did for me!”

In May 2017, we screened at Public School 32K in Brooklyn, NY. The site organizer, Angela, has been hosting our Mobile

Care Clinic for the past 7 years. “It is very important for women to receive their annual mammogram - she told

us - but it can be hard to find the time. For teachers and staff, it means taking a day off from work, and

for parents it’s juggling work, home and child care; it can be almost impossible. Having AICF’s mobile

clinic come directly to our school helps everyone complete their annual mammogram”. To set an

example for her co-workers and the parents, Angela signs up every year to get her

mammogram done on our mobile.

The International Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Program provides financial support for bright Italian scientists who pursue post-doctoral research and advanced training in collaboration with mentors at major cancer centers in the United States.

Post-doctoral research fellowships are a critical component in advancing cancer research, as they support talented young scientists with innovative project ideas at a time in their careers when funding from other sources is less certain. An AICF fellowship is awarded for a two-year period, pending a satisfactory review after the first year. All applications are reviewed by AICF’s Scientific Advisory Board Executive Committee.

FRANCESCO BOCCALATTEThe Amy & Joseph R. Perella FellowNew York University School of MedicineMentor: Iannis Aifantis, PhD I was trained in the Department of Pathology at the University of Turin, then I moved to San Raffaele University in Milan to get a PhD in oncology. In 2015 I joined the Lab of Prof. Iannis Aifantis, a renowned expert on hematological malignancies. During my post-doctoral training at NYU School of Medicine, I focused my research on two parallel projects, the first one related to hematopoiesis and stem cells and the second one characterizing a set of recurrent mutations in lymphoma. Both projects rely on genetic and epigenetic studies to discover disease mechanisms, leading to a better stratification of patients with the goal of identifying those who may benefit from new targeted therapies. The American-Italian Cancer Foundation is an incredible resource for Italian scientists in the United States and I am honored to be one of them.

SARA MARTIREThe Alexander Bodini Foundation FellowUTSouthwestern Medical CenterMentor: Laura Banaszynski, PhD

I received my PhD in Biochemistry in 2015 at La Sapienza University in Rome, where I worked on the role of the enzyme PARP-1 in Alzheimer’s disease. Thanks to the AICF fellowship and driven by my interest in epigenetics mechanisms, I started my postdoc at UTSouthwestern, in Laura Banaszynski’s Laboratory. Currently, my research focuses on the histone variant H3.3 and embryonic stem cells. In particular, I aim to identify functional consequences of H3.3 depositions in different genome regions and to determine whether its mutation combined with altered depositions can promote the development or progression of cancer. I am confident that the knowledge and research skills I am gaining during my postdoctoral training period, along with the professional connections I am developing, will support my growth as a scientist and will be key for my future career in the field of cancer epigenetics.

GIORGIO GAGLIAThe Chiara and Massimo Ferragamo FellowWhitehead Institute for Biomedical ResearchMentor: Susan Lindquist The Lindquist Laboratory, where I am working during this fellowship, has recently shown the striking importance of the heat-shock factor HSF1 protein in supporting the formation of tumors. In addition, HSF1’s activity is linked to poor prognosis in cancer patients. Based on these findings, my laboratory is now trying to understand how HSF1’s beneficial stress-response functions are hijacked by tumors to allow for unrestricted growth. My aim for this fellowship is to investigate the network of genes that HSF1 regulates and specifically identify the molecular pathways responsible for supporting tumor growth. Such detailed understanding will allow us to target these pathways directly for therapeutic purposes. I am very grateful for AICF’s support as it is bringing me one step closer to my long-term goal to develop an independent line of research and build my own laboratory.

FRANCESCA PUCAThe Gabelli Funds FellowThe University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer CenterMentor: Giulio Draetta, MD, PhD Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is characterized by a very poor prognosis and limited therapies, underscoring the need for novel therapeutic approaches. Using an in vivo loss-of-function screening targeting metabolic gene products in patient-derived glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs), we identified ACADM (Acyl CoA dehydrogenase medium chain) as one of the most relevant genes for GBM progression in vivo and in vitro. My current studies aim to decipher the molecular mechanisms by which ACADM and lipid degradation pathways support tumor maintenance in vitro and in vivo by using an ACADM knock-out transgenic mouse model, giving rise to new opportunities for therapeutic intervention for this lethal disease. It is expected that these data will contribute significantly to the understanding of the relevance of oxidative metabolism in cancer.

PAOLA VINCIThe Debra and Claudio Del Vecchio FellowMemorial Sloan Kettering Cancer CenterMentor: Alan Hanash, MD

The AICF Fellowship Program gave me the unique opportunity to join Dr. Hanash Lab at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. My research project focuses on hemato-oncology disease and bone marrow transplantation. Bone marrow transplantation is a proven cure for many patients suffering from hematological malignancies as well as for pediatric patients affected by immune deficiencies and metabolic disorders. For many of these patients, bone marrow transplantation is the only curative option. However, graft versus host disease (GvHD) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation. Our study will contribute to a better understanding of tissue recovery after GvHD damage, which can lead to the development of innovative therapeutic strategies to improve epithelium regeneration, preserving the GvL response.
