JULY 1, 2018 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Touch. That might be the most powerful thing we do in this world. The newborn, lovingly held and kissed and touched by mom and dad for the first few years of life, is developing neural pathways of confidence and security that will carry him for the rest of her life.

I wonder why we can’t remember those first years. Playing with my baby niece in the pool the other day, passing her from one adoring family member to the next, I had a flashback of my mom, holding my baby brother in a big towel while the rest of her confident brood splashed and swam laps in the pool. Marty would join us soon enough, but in that stage of life he needed nothing but the warmth of the sun, and the security of being held by mom. That’s the core of what we all need, isn’t it? Our Jesus knows that. Imagine that poor woman, “unclean” by every standard, so desperate for heal-ing that she reached out to him just to touch his clothes. She’d been roughly treated by her many doctors, and their touch had only brought more pain. But merely touching the clothes of The Com-passionate One healed her immediately. Jesus could have healed Jairus’s daughter with just a word. I think he traveled to her house because he knew that the whole family needed to be touched by him. And when we hear him say, “Do not be afraid; just have faith” we feel ourselves being touched by him, held by him, through the millennia, through the painful experiences of our lives, right through Mark’s text. I just felt power go out from him. Did you? In what ways do you feel the powerful touch of Jesus

in your life?

Decimo Tercer Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario

Tocar.

GOSPEL MEDITATION -

Today's Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demon-strates faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a wom-an afflicted with hemorrhages." She bravely ap-proaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually un-clean from her bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, con-firms her faith, and continues on to resurrect the young girl. Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one story -- the long-suffering woman or the young, innocent girl -- and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbol-ic meaning. Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappointment, or un-met expectations, it can feel like a part of our child-hood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, so-cial adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His heal-ing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life.

"I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace."
