GOOD TO BE BACK! Hello all! By the time you read this, I will have been back you for several weeks. I was able to do more, and more both personally and at Union Church, in the month of June following my spinal cord surgery so that I was able to resume my duties full time as your Transitional Senior Minister near the end of the month. Thank you for all your support and care during my surgery and recovery, prayer does work! And your prayers helped me improve steadily and recover at a good pace. I want to thank the staff and lay leaders for all their extra effort during this time. I have a great deal to be thankful for! Now it is time to look to the future. Because I was off so much in May and June, I will be engaged in ministry throughout the remainder of the summer and will be part of the fall and winter planning that goes on. I will also continue to work with the Transitional Steering Committee to plan the next steps of our transition. The next major step in our transition will be our cottage meetings. During the month of August you will be invited to attend one cottage meeting in the fall that will meet in a church member’s home (or possibly at the church.) Cottage meetings will be scheduled during the day, on weeknights and on weekends so that every member of Union Church can find a cottage meeting they can attend. Each cottage meeting will be a 90minute session that will elicit further discussion from the discoveries from the Open Forums in the spring and ask the question, “Based on our discussion of our values and visions for Union Church, what qualities and characteristics do we need in our next Senior Minister to move forward as a thriving congregation?” Thirty cottage meetings are being planned so that as many members of the congregation can participate as possible. Through the information gathered at the cottage meetings and the open forums, the Senior Minister Search Committee, which begins to meet in January, will have a large amount of data to construct a church profile. This is the first step in the Senior Minister search process. So, beginning in August, when you get a call from a host inviting you to a cottage meeting, take the call; and if you are not available to attend the date the host gives you, the host will have a list of other dates to attend. The goal is maximum participation of the entire congregation. Please accept the invitation to shape the future of the Union Church of Hinsdale! Rev. Dr. Tom Zoelzer Transitional Senior Minister July 10, 2011 A Publication of The Union Church of Hinsdale, U.C.C. Volume 43, Issue 12

Invitation  to  Faith:  Community  &  Church  Life

 Children  Learn  What  They  Read

“I  want  to  hear  a  story,”  is  a  request  familiar  to  parents  of  3s  &  4s.  This  summer  the  3s  &  4s  are

exploring  the  presence  of  God  through  familiar  stories,  such  as  Goodnight  Moon,  The  Runaway

Bunny,  and  many  more.    These  books,  many  of  them  award  winners,  demonstrate  God’s  love,

presence,  care  and  principles  through  the  portrayal  of  nature,  families,  and  diverse  settings.

Summer  is  a  relaxing  time  to  read  and  play  outside.

 “Brown  Bag”  Children’s  Church

This  summer  we  will  offer  Sunday  School  for  Kindergarten  through  5th  grades  at  the  9:00  hour  of

church.    It  is  in  the  format  of  a  Children’s  Church.    We  gather  in  the  Lounge  for  bagels  and  then  head

to  the  chapel  for  singing.    Everything  sounds  familiar,  but  after  the  singing,  all  ages  go  to  Classrooms

J&K  on  the  main  level  for  the  “brown  bag”  message.    Each  week  the  children  hear  a  message  based

on  the  scripture  of  the  day  in  church.    Our  message  uses  objects  in  a  brown  bag  to  discuss  the

scripture.  Families  then  have  a  common  message  to  share  together.    The  following  is  the  format  for

the  morning:

8:50-‐9:00   Gather  in  Lounge

9:00-‐9:15   Music  in  Chapel

9:15-‐9:50   Classroom  J&K

All  K-‐5th  grade  children  can  be  picked  up  in  Classroom

J&K  immediately  following  the  service.    Summer  Sunday  School  for  those  5th  grade  and  under  will  be  at  9  a.m.  each  Sunday  throughout  the

summer  except  on  August  14  for  Mike  Surratt's  last  Sunday.

In  the  past  several  months,  the  Union  Church  Endowment  Fund  has  been  blessed  with  two  significant  gifts.    A  bequest  from  the  Estate  of  Vivian  Petersen  for  $200,000  and  a  gift  from  Lee  Smithwick  for  $100,000.    These  gifts  to  the  general  Endowment  Fund  will  keep  on  giving  approximately  5%  of  their  total  ($15,000  per  year)  to  the  church’s  General  Fund.    Based  on  this  year’s  budget,  these  gifts  will  provide  $9,000  per  year  to  help  pay  for  staff,  over  $2,000  per  year  to  maintain  our  facilities  and  the  remaining  $4,000  to  be  split  between  Mission,  Youth,  Music  and  Family  Ministries  forever!!    This  year  the  church  will  receive  over  $100,000  from  the  Endowment  Fund.    We  are  so  grateful  to  those  who  have  included  Union  Church  as  part  of  their  legacy.                   Jeff  Zimmer

10  Commandments  for  a  New  Age

1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout.

2. So a Car's WINDSHIELD is so large & the Rear view Mirror is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, Look Ahead and Move on.

3. Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write. 4. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If things are

going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either. 5. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold!

Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold! 6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax,

sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end! 7. When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve

your problems HE has faith in your abilities. 8. A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He

replied: "Yes, losing your vision!" 9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are

safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you. 10. WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes away today's PEACE.
