It is better to watch and pray so that we do not waste time in idleness. If you have leave to speak and it is expedient, then speak of God and of those things which will edify. A Bad use or neglect of our spiritual progress makes us careless of what we say. However, devout conversation on spiritual matters is beneficial to the soul, especially when people who are congenial in mind and spirit are drawn together in God.”

The Saint Benedict Medal Explained Saint Benedict became known for his power over the Devil, with the Holy Cross as his efficacious instrument to make the Devil flee. The St. Benedict medal is based on this tradition. The medal as we commonly know it today (the Jubilee medal) was first made in 1880 to commemorate the fourteenth centenary anniversary of St. Benedict's birth by the Archabbey of Monte Cassino, the most important monastery established by the Saint in the 6th century.

HOW SHOULD THE MEDAL BE USED?

The St. Benedict medal is one of the most popular among Catholics, and there are many indul-gences associated with this medal which you can read about here. There are also spiritual bene-fits associated with the pious use of the medal including warding off evil and temptation, obtain-ing the conversion of sinners, help for women during childbirth, strength in preserving purity, granting the grace of a happy death, protection during storms, and interceding for curing dis-eases.

Needless to say, this is a very powerful medal for spiritual protection. However, it is important to not be superstitious about Catholic medals; they are sacramentals to be used as "sacred signs instituted by the Church to prepare us to receive the fruit of the sacraments and to sanctify differ-ent circumstances of our lives" (CCC, 1677).

7 cosas que debes saber sobre la medalla y la cruz de San Benito

Desde hace siglos, muchos cristianos han usado la medalla y la cruz de San Benito, el santo abad y patrono

de Europa, para luchar contra las fuerzas del mal. El vivió entre los años 480 y 547.

1. El origen de la medalla es incierto. En el siglo XVII, durante un juicio de brujería en Alemania, unas

mujeres acusadas testificaron que no tenían poder sobre la Abadía de Metten porque estaba bajo la protec-

ción de la cruz. Cuando se investigó, se hallaron en las paredes del recinto varias cruces pintadas rodeadas

por las letras que se encuentran ahora en las medallas. Más adelante, se encontró un pergamino con la ima-

gen de San Benito y las frases completas que sirvieron para escribir esas abreviaturas.

2. Con la medalla se puede obtener indulgencia plenaria. La medalla, como se le conoce ahora, es la del

jubileo de 1880 por los 1400 años del nacimiento del santo. Con ella se puede obtener la indulgencia ple-

naria en la Fiesta de San Benito, que la Iglesia celebra el 11 de julio, siguiendo las condiciones habituales

que manda la Iglesia: confesión sacramental, comunión eucarística y oración por las intenciones del Papa.

3. Cuando San Benito hacía la señal de la cruz obtenía una especial protección divina. Cierta vez

quisieron envenenar a San Benito. El santo, como era su costumbre, hizo el signo de la cruz sobre el vaso y

el objeto se partio en pedazos.

4. La medalla tiene gran poder de exorcismo. La medalla de San Benito es un sacramental reconocido

por la Iglesia con un gran poder de exorcismo. Los sacramentales son “signos sagrados con los que, imi-

tando de alguna manera a los sacramentos, se expresan efectos, sobre todo espirituales, obtenidos por la

intercesión de la Iglesia". El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica establece que por los sacramentales "los

hombres se disponen a recibir el efecto principal de los sacramentos y se santifican las diversas circunstan-

cias de la vida".

5. La medalla muestra a San Benito sosteniendo una cruz y el libro de sus reglas A ambos lados del santo dice: “Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti” (Cruz del Santo Padre Benito). Se puede ver

también una copa de la cual sale una víbora y un cuervo. De manera circular aparece la oración: “Eius in

óbitu nostro preséntia muniamur” (A la hora de nuestra muerte seamos protegidos por su presencia). En la

parte inferior central se lee: “Ex. S. M. Cassino MDCCCLXXX” (Del Santo Monte Cassino 1880).

6. Las siglas de la medalla en el reverso y su significado

C.S.P.B. "Cruz del Santo Padre Benito".

C.S.S.M.L. "La santa Cruz sea mi luz" (crucero vertical de la cruz).

N.D.S.M.D. "Que el dragón infernal no sea mi guía" (crucero horizontal).

En círculo, comenzando arriba hacia la derecha:

7. La medalla debe ser bendecida por un sacerdote con esta oración especial -Nuestra ayuda nos viene del Señor

-Que hizo el cielo y la tierra.

Te ordeno, espíritu del mal, que abandones esta medalla, en el nombre de Dios Padre Omnipotente, que

hizo el cielo y la tierra, el mar y todo lo que en ellos se contiene.

Que desaparezcan y se alejen de esta medalla toda la fuerza del adversario, todo el poder del diablo, todos

los ataques e ilusiones de satanás, a fin de que todos los que la usaren gocen de la salud de alma y cuerpo.

En el nombre del Padre Omnipotente y de su Hijo, nuestro Señor, y del Espíritu Santo Paráclito, y por la

caridad de Jesucristo, que ha de venir a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos y al mundo por el fuego.

...Brown Scapular continued. Many popes and saints have strongly recommended wearing the Brown Scapular to the Catholic Faithful. Pope Pius XII said: "The Scapular is a practice of piety which by its very simplic-ity is suited to everyone, and has spread widely among the faithful of Christ to their spiritual profit." In our own times, Pope Paul VI said: "Let the faithful hold in high esteem the practices and devo-tions to the Blessed Virgin ... the Rosary and the Scapular of Carmel" and in another place re-ferred to the Scapular as: "so highly recommended by our illustrious predecessors." According to Church tradition, there are three conditions necessary to participate in this Privilege and share in the other spiritual benefits of the Scapular: wear the Brown Scapular, observe chas-tity according to your state in life, and pray the Rosary. In addition to the Sabbatine Privilege, en-rollment in the Brown Scapular also makes a person part of the Carmelite family throughout the world. They therefore share in all of the prayers and good works of the Carmelite Orders. In order to receive the spiritual blessings associated with the Scapular, it is necessary to be formally enrolled in the Brown Scapular. The enrollment is made only once by a priest or author-ized person. The Scapular can be replaced afterwards by a medal, which has on one side the im-age of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the other, the image of Mary. There is a short form for giving the scapular: "Receive this Scapular, a sign of your special relationship with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, whom you pledge to imitate. May it be a reminder to you of your dignity as a Christian in serving others and imitating Mary. Wear it as a sign of her pro-tection and of belonging to the family of Carmel, voluntarily doing the will of God and devoting yourself to building a world true to his plan of community, justice and peace." ... el escapulario marrón continuó. Mount Carmel Feast Day Thursday July 16th

The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on July 16, was first instituted in the late 14th century in commemoration of the approval of the rule of the Carmelite Order a hundred years earlier. According to legend, a religious community was established even before the time of Christ on Mount Carmel. This is the mountain overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on which the prophet Elijah successfully challenged the priests of Baal and won the people to the true God. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel entered the Calendar of the universal Church in the early 18th century.

Although there is no historical evidence for the pre-Christian Carmelite community, refer-ences in the 12th century record a community of monks on the holy mountain. Despite continual difficulties, the community built a monastery and church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on Mount Carmel in 1263. Saint Louis, King of France, had visited Mount Carmel in 1254, and brought back six French hermits for whom he built a convent near Paris. Mount Carmel was taken by the Muslims in 1291, and the brothers were killed and the convent burned. The spread of the Carmelites in Europe is largely attributable to the work of Saint Simon Stock (1247-1265). The Carmelite Order was formally approved in 1274 at the Council of Lyon.

The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, according to the Carmelite tradition, was presented by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock, the then Father General on July 16, 1251. Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise, saying : "Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire .... It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace." Another important aspect of wearing the Scapular is the Sabbatine Privilege. This concerns a promise made by Our Lady to Pope John XXII. In a papal letter he issued, he recounted a vision that he had had. He stated that the Blessed Virgin had said to him in this vision, concerning those who wear the Brown Scapular: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting."

Monte Carmelo Dia de Fiesta jueves 16 de julio

La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo, celebrada el 16 de julio, se instituyó por primera vez a fines del siglo XIV en con-memoración de la aprobación de la regla de la Orden Carmelita cien años antes. Según la leyenda, se estableció una comunidad religiosa incluso antes de la época de Cristo en el Monte Carmelo. Esta es la montaña que domina el mar Mediterráneo en la que el profeta Elías de-safió con éxito a los sacerdotes de Baal y ganó a la gente para el verdadero Dios.
