LUBBOCK, Texas (June
26, 2016) – Jakob
Butturff, a 22-year-old
lefthander who won’t
complete his first full
year of Professional
Bowlers Association
competition until next
month, won the PBA Xtra
Frame Lubbock Sports
Open at South Plains
Lanes, nipping Houston’s
Shawn Maldonado in the
title match, 207-205.
Butturff, who has an
unorthodox delivery that generates significant strike
power, used a late double to pull even with
Maldonado, and then struck on his fill ball in the 10th
frame to force the Houston two-handed player to
double for the win. Maldonado’s bid for his first PBA
Tour title ended when the 4 pin stood on his try for a
second strike in the
10th.
“I’m feeling great for
once,” Butturff said.
“Winning that first title
feels great. We were
basically going at the
same pace in the title
match, but eventually,
my fill shot in the 10th
was the whole thing.”
Butturff, who finished
fourth in the PBA Viper
Championship and fifth
in the PBA Chameleon
Championship during
the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VII in
December in Reno, earned $20,000 for his first title.
He rolled into the lead with a 6-2 match play record
and some keen observations.

Clara Guerrero Wins First PWBA Title
See GUERRERO Page 3
By Terry Bigham – PWBAGREEN BAY, Wis. – More than a
decade ago, Clara Guerrero made
the move from Colombia to the
United States to bowl collegiately
and chase her dream of compet-
ing on the Professional Women’s
Bowling Association Tour.
It took a little longer than
expected, but Guerrero accom-
plished the dream of winning a
PWBA title, and a major title at
that, with a 199-175 victory over
Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga,
New York, in the final of the Go
Bowling PWBA Players
Championship.
As the No. 3 seed, Guerrero had
to win three matches at The
Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in
Green Bay, Wisconsin, to earn the title.
“It feels incredible, it’s just such a dream for my
first title to be a major against such amazing com-
petitors,” Guerrero said. “It’s just spectacular. I feel
unreal right now.”
She won a collegiate title at
Wichita State in 2005, and has
won numerous titles internation-
ally, including capturing the
QubicaAMF World Cup title the
last two years. But a PWBA title
was what she always wanted.
“I have won many things with
my national team, but this is the
main dream,” Guerrero said.
“When I moved to the United
States 12 years ago and bowled
for Wichita State, I did it to get
better to bowl on tour, to bowl
against the best women in the
world. When we didn’t have that
opportunity anymore, I competed
against the men to stay sharp.
Now that we are back, and I can
accomplish the dream I always wanted, it’s just
incredible.”

“I was watching Gary Faulkner Jr. bowl for a couple of games and I
tried to stay in the same zone he was in, and that was most successful for
me,” Butturff said. “I tried that (earlier in the event) and it worked, so I
did it again today, and it worked out perfectly.”
Faulkner, also a lefthander, won the 2015 PBA World Championship in
Reno.
Butturff also was well aware of the success a couple of other young
players have had in PBA competition earlier in the year. Sweden’s Jesper
Svensson became the youngest player ever to win the FireLake PBA
Tournament of Champions at age 20 in February, and 19-year-old
Anthony Simonson of Princeton, Texas, became the youngest ever to win
a PBA major title in the USBC Masters.
“I just wanted to go out and prove I could compete with some of the
best,” Butturff said. “I wanted to keep up with Jesper and Anthony, and
prove the young guns can win out here on tour.”
All rounds of the Lubbock Sports Open were video-streamed live on
PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. The Lubbock tournament
was the fourth in a series of 10 Xtra Frame PBA Tour events that will pay
the overall competition points winner a $10,000 bonus. The next event in
the XF series will be the PBA-PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer
Mixed Doubles at Bowl on Bellaire in Houston, Texas, July 28-31.

In the title match, Guerrero had just one strike in
nine frames but converted all of her spares, includ-
ing a 1-2-7-10, while Liz Johnson had open frames
in the third and sixth frames. Needing a mark and
six pins in the final frame to clinch the title,
Guerrero delivered two strikes.
Guerrero’s semifinal match against Shannon
O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois, was decided on the
final ball. O’Keefe, who won the Nationwide
PWBA Sonoma County Open earlier this season,
struck in the ninth, as the 6 pin rolled late to take out
the 3 pin, and had the opportunity to shut out
Guerrero in the 10th frame by striking on her first
two shots.
O’Keefe struck on the first shot, but left the 2-8-
10 on the second, picking up the 2-8, to leave the
door open for Guerrero.
Needing 20 pins to move to the title match,
Guerrero started the final frame with a spare, forc-
ing her to strike on the fill ball. She got the strike
and a 226-225 victory.
“I made a move left and it paid off,” Guerrero
said. “I’m glad I did it.”
Guerrero advanced to the semifinals with a 237-199
victory over No. 4 seed Stefanie Johnson of Grand
Prairie, Texas. After Johnson opened in the sixth after
leaving the 1-2-8-10, Guerrero struck on six of seven
shots, including the final five, to advance.
At the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship,
competitors bowled 12 games of qualifying on
before the field was cut to the top 16 players for
match play. The remaining players bowled 16
match-play games that determined the four players
for the stepladder finals.
2016 USBC Women’s ChampionshipsSeveral competitors made runs at the top of the leaderboard this week
at the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships.
Sharon Westerhold of La Habra, California, used a run in Ruby Singles
to add her name to the top five in two events at the South Point Bowling
Plaza. Westerhold rolled games of 205, 234 and 216 for a 655 series to
move into fourth place in Ruby Singles, and she added 649 in team and
520 in doubles for a 1,824 all-events tally, which is good for fourth place
in Ruby All-Events.
Ruby Singles and Ruby All-Events, which consist of bowlers with
entering averages of 175-189, are led by Daphne Williams of Mount
Vernon, New York (678), and Rhonda Greenhalgh of West Valley City,
Utah (1,879), respectively.
Topaz Singles saw two new additions to the top five this week as Carla
Houston of San Antonio moved into a tie for second place with a 507
series and Theresa Martin of Hanover, Maryland, took over fourth place
with 504.
Sue Browne of Garden City, Michigan, leads Topaz Singles, a division
for bowlers with entering averages of 129 and below, with 518.
We Got This! of Aberdeen, Maryland, moved into third place in
Emerald Team with games of 666, 663 and 722 for a 2,051 total. Toooo

event is being contested at the 60-

news of becoming the first player

alongside the USBC Women's
Championships to accomplish the
feat was an added and unexpected
bonus.
"This definitely is ranking No. 1
right now in my mind," said Sloan,
who added games of 269 and 189

check marks you want. I didn't
think I was the first. I thought for

$10,000 Bonus for Dallas StrikersIt had never been done before in PBA competition, so when the PBA League GoBowling.com Dallas
Strikers, led by player-manager Norm Duke, bowled a Baker format 300 game in the semifinal round of the
PBA League Elias Cup competition at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, the question arose, does the team
qualify for the traditional $10,000 bonus for a nationally-televised 300 game?
The question was answered in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 bowling proprietors and industry lead-
ers during International Bowl Expo at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas when PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom
Clark surprised Duke with a check for $10,000 to share with his Elias Cup-champion teammates BJ Moore,
Shawn Maldonado, Bill O’Neill and Tommy Jones.
The Baker 300 game, which aired on ESPN on May 1 as part the Elias Cup series, helped the Strikers elim-
inate the Barbasol Motown Muscle and advance to the championship round against Pete Weber and his
GEICO New York City WTT KingPins teammates. Duke called the experience of anchoring the perfect game
“one of the five top moments in my career.”
“It was a surprise because at the time it happened, the PBA League was not a traditional PBA Tour event
and there wasn’t a 300 game bonus plan in place,” Clark said. “But we discussed the situation after the fact
and decided the reward was in order, and center stage at International Bowl Expo provided us a perfect oppor-
tunity to not only present the $10,000 bonus, but to show the industry leaders a clip of the 10th frame of the
historic game.”

AT FARMINGDALE LANES
By Bill Vint - PBA
LAS VEGAS – A matter of hours after he was sur-
prised as the 2016 recipient of the Jim Jaryszak
Laneman Award at International Bowl Expo on
June 29, LaGrange, Ill., native John Forst was
found unresponsive on the Mandalay Bay proper-
ty.
Forst, who was suffering from terminal brain can-
cer, was 55.
At Bowl Expo, Forst had a final opportunity to
reunite with a horde of friends, colleagues and for-
mer competitors from his days working with
Storm Products, Kegel, USBC and PBA competi-
tion before he decided to spend some idle time
playing slots. According to unofficial reports, he
took a break to get some fresh air, wandered off
and was found hours later where emergency resus-
citation efforts were unsuccessful.
Among hundreds of social media reactions to the
unexpected turn of events was this comment from
his brother, Ken Forst: “In a way it's like he was
able to go to his own wake. If anyone could pick
what to do on their last day I'm sure most would
want to have a day like this.”
Forst launched his bowling career as a PBA Tour
competitor, winning his only national title with
partner Louis Blancarte in the 1984 Columbia
Senior/Touring Pro Doubles Championship in San
Antonio, Texas. He made six other television
finals in 286 PBA Tour appearances, including the
1981 and ’82 Brunswick Memorial World Opens
held in Glendale Heights, and winning four times
in 100 PBA Regional appearances before continu-
ing his career in the lane maintenance field.
As a lane technician for Kegel from 1997-2007,
Forst was trained by Kegel founder John Davis
and Len Nicholson, the former PBA Director of
Lane Maintenance, to handle major events on the
PBA Tour and events around the world for the
World Tenpin Bowling Association. He also was
involved in the research and development of lane
machines, lane conditioners and lane cleaners, and
he developed lane patterns and performed topog-
raphy studies at Kegel, where he also presented
seminars on ball reaction and lane maintenance.
He oversaw lane maintenance at the USBC Open
Championships in Billings, Mont., in 2002 and
Knoxville, Ky., in 2003, and supervised lane
maintenance for USBC Women’s Championships
in Salt Lake City (1994), Tucson (1995) and Reno,
Nev. (1997). A USBC Silver coach, he later helped
coach the Indonesian and Malaysian national
teams.
He was the sixth recipient of the “Laneman
Award” named in honor of the late USBC
Equipment Specifications and Certifications
department employee, an award selected by USBC
to recognize a person for their behind-the-scenes
work.
In accepting the award, the 2014 Illinois
Bowling Association Hall of Fame inductee said,
“I had no idea. I’m not very big on awards, but it’s
great to receive an award named for someone like
Jim. I’m glad the service side is getting recogni-
tion.”
Forst, who was living with wife Tracy in West
Jordan, Utah, at the time of his death.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - When Colombia native Rocio
Restrepo, now living in Louisville, Ohio, arrived for the
Thursday practice session of the 2016 Professional
Women's Bowling Association Lexington Open, to say she
was tired would have been an understatement.
Restrepo dealt with several flight delays en route to
Lexington and wasn't quite herself during practice. She
opted to sleep late, despite the opportunity to attend the
morning practice session, and the extra hours of sleep paid
off.
Restrepo averaged more than 221 through 12 games of
qualifying to take the lead at Collins Bowling Center-
Eastland with a 2,662 total. She was followed by Bryanna
Cote of Red Rock, Arizona (2,574), Shannon O'Keefe of
O'Fallon, Illinois (2,553), Diana Zavjalova of Latvia
(2,543) and Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California
(2,535).
The 14-time Team Colombia member noticed a few simi-
larities between her home center, Stonehedge
Entertainment, and Collins Bowling Center-Eastland. She
also relied on a good memory to help her attack the 38-foot
lane condition.
"I was still a little tired," said Restrepo, who is the top seed
for the PWBA Greater Detroit Open TV finals, scheduled to
air July 19 at 9 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network.
"Today, I thought about what rolls good in my home house
- what works, what doesn't work - and I felt that kept me
more focused. When I was younger in Colombia, there was
a house similar to this one, and I remembered what rolled
well there, too. I have a really good memory from my
younger years, so I had a good idea of what I like to see. I
guess being tired made me work harder."
Restrepo's teammate on the Colombian national team, 2014
United States Bowling Congress Queens champion Maria
Jose Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, earned the final spot in
Saturday's cashers' round with a 2,351 total, a 195.92 aver-
age.
The PWBA Lexington Open continues with six additional
games, with pinfall carrying over to determine the 12 play-
ers who will advance to round-robin match play. The
match-play finalists will be split into two groups, each fea-
turing six players. Each group will bowl six games, includ-
ing a final position round.
At the end of match play, the top qualifier in each group will
earn an automatic spot in the stepladder finals, with seeding
being determined by total pins. The second, third and fourth
qualifiers in each group will advance to a group stepladder
final. The winner of each group stepladder will advance to
the televised stepladder finals.
All qualifying and match-play rounds are being broadcast
on Xtra Frame, the exclusive online bowling channel for the
Professional Bowlers Association.
The finals of the PWBA Lexington Open will be taped Aug.
7 during the U.S. Women's Open and air Tuesday, Aug.16
on CBS Sports Network.

PBA QUICK NOTES:● Mookie Betts’ bowling fan club can’t do anything except grow after
his selection to the starting outfield for the American League in next
week’s All-Star Games in San Diego. Betts, the Boston Red Sox right
fielder who made his debut in PBA competition during the GEICO PBA
World Series of Bowling VII in Reno last December, has been the
American League’s best leadoff hitter throughout the first half of the
major league baseball season, hitting .298 with 18 home runs and 57
RBIs, which is tied for fifth best in the American League. And as an fyi,
Betts is planning to return to the PBA WSOB VIII in Reno this winter.
