JULY 13, 2018 AVOCADOS The market has made a turn, particularly on #1 60 and 70 count fruit as supplies have dried up on these sizes and grades. There has also been a major interruption in avocado supply from Mexico through the southern border due to heavy rainfall in the south and central regions. We are expected to receive product; however that could mean pro-rates. In order to keep the supply chain full and flowing, we are asking customers to substitute sizes where necessary and place orders with enough advance notice for ripening purposes as inventories will be very slim. We will keep you posted with any further updates. BANANAS Demand on this item remains firm; however, prices will continue to ease. Quality will remain inconsistent due to weather that has impacted the growing regions in Guatemala, Mexico, and Costa Rica. This only further complicates an already short banana market across the country due to virus impacts. Due to improving inventories, we should no longer see ripening issues. BERRIES Blueberries: New Jersey blueberries are peak of season. Michigan will be starting in 10-14 days. Quality is excellent. Blackberries: The market on blackberries is extremely short in supply. We are seeing very high prices with little fruit available. Raspberries: We are seeing some shortages in supply in this market. Quality is good. Strawberries: California strawberry supplies are light due to the summer heat. We forecast a demand exceeds supply situation for the next 3-4 weeks on all packs, including organics. CITRUS Navels/Oranges: The citrus season has transitioned into the southern hemisphere. Navels are shipping from South Africa. Cara Cara and Daisy mandarins are in season. Lemons: California lemons are in an extreme market alert. Demand exceeds supply and we forecast this will continue for about 3-4 weeks. Limes: The lime supply has tightened up due to heavy rainfall, which delayed harvest. We forecast supplies to pick back up in 7-10 days. GRAPES We have transitioned into California for grapes. Supplies are steady and the quality is very good. Organic green and red seedless are available. Red Globes are available from Mexico and excellent quality. LETTUCE AND LEAFY GREENS Butter: Supply and demand are steady. Quality is good. Green and Red Leaf: Red leaf quality is good. Demand is average and supplies are normal. ONIONS Onions are now in full steam out of both the San Joaquin Valley as well as New Mexico. Quality is strong at this point, and yellow supplies are in abundance. Size profiles on yellow onions have been heavy to larger sizes (Jumbos, Colossals, and Super Colossals). Mediums have commanded a premium at times as they are shorter in supply and retail outlets are stressing the market. Barring any unexpected weather, yellow onions should remain plentiful throughout the span of both California and New Mexico. Red onions in both areas have been very short, and we have seen a swift increase in price. In a typical season, California red supplies can make up for shortages in New Mexico, but due to planting delays, there have been gaps in supply out of California. Reds will likely remain elevated for much of the summer, but as California re-enters the market with good supplies in the coming weeks, things will start to level off. Washington winter onions are around in small supply at the moment, and their direct seed crop will start in the next 4-5 weeks. Transportation out of both California and New Mexico has been a major challenge and is limiting movement. High temperatures are deterring both shippers and trucking companies from carrying onions in non-refrigerated vans.

POTATOES

The potato market remains strong throughout most of the size profile, especially on the larger sizes. Quality is fair with some pressure bruising and internal issues. This is largely due to the cold temperatures during the harvest of the Burbank crop. Production has also slowed as dwindling storage supplies and high cull rates are causing growers to take significantly longer to make grade. Supplies are expected to remain short until new crop Norkotahs become available around the beginning of August. Transportation has also been challenging and rates have continued to increase.

TOMATOES The Florida tomato season has finished. We are transitioning up the east coast into South Carolina, growers are crown picking fruit. Alabama crops to follow in 7-10 days. Smaller fruit is available in the West. Eastern cherries, grapes, Romas, and 2-layers are available and the quality is good. Organics are in good supply, varieties such as: beefsteaks, campari, cherry, mixed cherry, cherry TOVs, grape, and Valentino TOVs.

TREE FRUIT

New crop California varietals have started shipping this week, such as: apricots, peaches, nectarines, white-flesh, Saturn/Donut, and organics. The California cherry season is starting to wind down. The weather has affected the season’s bloom and yields are lower than last year. Washington organic cherries are available. Pomegranates and Pom arils are from Chile. Black Mission Figs are available from Chile as well. Kiwi: New crop Chilean fruit is available. Supply and quality are both good. Organics are arriving from Italy.

APPLES AND PEARS

Excellent quality available on apple and pear varieties. We are starting to transition from domestic into New Zealand and southern hemisphere growing regions.

EXOTIC CHOICES JULY 15 - 21, 2018

CULINARY

JUAN CANARY5 ct. [US]

Similar to its pale green relative but with a vibrant golden skin. Like its relative its flesh is succulent, velvety and

exceptionally sweet.

GALIA MELON 6 ct. [US]

The Galia melon has a yellow to orange skin that is covered in light golden-tan netting. Its flesh is pale green with a succulent texture that has a signature spicy sweet flavor with tropical and perfumed aromatics. The more orange in color the exterior skin of the Gaila melon the higher the

sugar content of the melon’s flesh will be.

SPECIALTY MELONS

LEMONDROP MELON9 ct. [US]

With the initial appearance of a Galia but unlike any other melon! The Lemon Drop has no floral aromatics or sub-acid sweetness. Rather its flavor is filled with overt signature sweet tartness of lemon, subtle hints of

honeydew and watermelon.

CRENSHAW MELON6 ct. [US]

The Crenshaw melon, also spelled Cranshaw, has a yellow and green, corrugated, rough, firm rind void of netting. Its dense, tender, peach-colored flesh is sweet and slightly spicy. The melon’s skin turns golden-yellow at the peak of ripeness and will have slightly waxy feel. Crenshaw melons are full-flavored and sturdy enough to be cooked.

GOLDEN DEWLICIOUS™ HONEYDEW6 ct. [US]

The Golden honeydew melon has a similar shape and firm texture to the common honeydew. Its most obvious difference is its bright golden-hued skin. The golden variety has a sweet and refreshing flavor profile. When ripe its skin is firm, thin and smooth. Its flesh is

succulent, velvety and sweet.

YELLOW WATERMELON60 lbs. [MEX]

This variety of watermelon is yellow because of the absence of the antioxidant, lycopene. The Yellow watermelon has a canary yellow flesh, often seedless, with occasional black seeds. Tasting no different from the common red watermelon, when ripe, Yellow watermelons have the same signature two-toned

green skin. Their flesh is tender, crisp and sweet.

Kiss® melons are grown in the rich soils of California's San Joaquin Valley. Cultivated by the Russell family, the father is the grower, mother maintains quality control, and their son oversees sales and marketing. The family owned farm focuses on giving each melon a great flavor-driven experience each time you bite into a Kiss® Melon. With flavors ranging from unctuously sweet to a mellow citrus, you can guarantee a special profile for each variety.

SUGAR KISS™ MELON9 ct. [US]

Sugar Kiss® is the newest, and sweetest member to the Kiss® family of melons. The soft flesh offers a superb, melting quality that dissolves like sugar. A native of Taiwan, the Sugar Kiss® has such a distinguished, sweet flavor that in one bite, your Sugar Kiss® will be your new favorite melon!

SUMMER KISS™ MELON9 ct. [US]

Summer Kiss® is a mildly sweet and creamy piece of fruit. With a pale green colored flesh, Summer Kiss®

is reminiscent of Honeydew. The netted exterior is dark gold and contrasts with the bright green interior. A native of Israel, Summer Kiss® is a special variety that offers consistent flavor and texture.

KOREAN MELON12 ct. [MEX]

Korean melon’s translucent white flesh bears a trio of seed cavities that have a highly concentrated sweetness. When ripe, the melon’s subtly sweet flavor is similar to that of a pear or honeydew melon, with a delicate and clean aroma. Though commonly served peeled, the melon is completely edible. Its skin is very thin and its seeds are petite. Korean melons are best served chilled, and often served with sweet seeds and pith intact.

SANTA CLAUS MELON 6 ct. [US]

Also known as “Piel de Sapo” meaning toad skin. The Santa Claus Melon or Christmas melon is a close relative to the Casaba variety with a mild melon flavor and sweetness close to honeydew. Because of its thick skin, this melon does not release the signature aroma of other varieties. Typically the brighter the yellow of the melon rind, the riper and sweeter it is.

ORANGE FLESH MELON6 ct. [US]

Similar to common honeydews except the salmon hued flesh is more like a cantaloupe Orange flesh is firm yet juicy offering a honey-sweet melon flavor. Unlike many other melons, the

Orange Flesh will continue to ripen after being picked.
