July 14, 2013 - 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time “…go and do likewise.” Luke 10:37 This was Jesus’ simple command to all of us at the end of the Good Samaritan story. How do we do “likewise?” By sharing our skills. By reaching into our pockets when financial help is needed. By taking the time to help when we are needed, not when it’s convenient for us. CALL TO PRAYER FOR LIFE, MARRIAGE & RELIGIOUS LIBERTY In this Year of Faith, the Catholic Bishops of the United States have called for a nationwide effort to advance a movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty through prayer, penance, and sacrifice. Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray for rebuilding a culture favorable to life and marriage and for increased protections of religious liberty. This call to prayer is prompted by unprecedented challenges to the Church and the nation, particularly the HHS Mandate and current trends in government and culture toward redefining marriage. The goal of this call to prayer is twofold: (1) to increase awareness of these challenges and (2) to build spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful so that we can be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope, and charity and agents of the New Evangelization.

WAYS YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:

Attend our monthly Eucharistic Adoration

Pray the Rosary daily.

Fast and abstain from meat on Fridays

Join the movement! Pray for our nation. Pray for life, marriage and religious

liberty.

Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: Helpmates “Marriage is a unique communion of persons. In their intimate union as male and female, the spouses are called to exist for each other. Just as Genesis describes Eve as a helper for Adam, we can see that in marriage, a husband and wife are meant to help each other through self-giving.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/laity/loveandlife/. Our Good Neighbor God God sent Jesus to re-form our hearts, to re-create them, to transform them into more loving and open hearts. The Gospel challenges the old saying the poet Robert Frost once quoted, “Good fences make good neighbors.” Jesus educates us into another vision of what makes a good neighbor.

This Week’s Reading: Today we will hear the familiar story of the Good Samaritan. In the first reading, we learn that God’s command is already in our hearts—we have only to carry it out. At the end of the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus says that we are to “go and do likewise.” As you listen to God’s word today, try to hear what God has written in your heart, and allow God to help you know how to carry it out. Question of the Week: When was the last time I saw someone in need and passed on by, or stopped to help, and what made the difference in my choice?

SAVE THE DATE – AUGUST 17, 2013 In August of 1813, Washington County became the fifth county in the State of Missouri. A committee has been working for two years to celebrate this bicentennial. Our parish grounds have been chosen as the place for this great celebration. The day will start at 10:00. An opening ceremony will be held at 11:00 with flag raisings of the French, Spanish and American Flags. A French Diplomat will be present to say a few words and other representatives will be on hand. Old time crafts, foods cooked by Old Mines Area Historical Society, games for kids, and many other activities. A PIE JUDGING CONTEST in school cafeteria – so get your favorite recipe out and get those pies entered. Our own Old Mines area Ambassador will be on hand to play the music our parents, grandparents and ancestors loved to listen to. Everyone is welcome!!! Please come and enjoy the day with family and friends.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: As Catholics, we believe that, at the Mass, the bread and wine offered by the priest become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, which we receive in Holy Communion. After Mass has ended, however, the Body and Blood remain, and the Sacred Host is reserved in the tabernacle of every Catholic Church (while the Precious Blood is consumed rather than reserved). Pope Benedict pointed out that spending time in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle is necessary for spiritual growth: "In modern life, so often noisy and dispersive, it is more than ever important to recover the capacity for inner silence and prayer. Eucharistic adoration enables this to happen . . . " Here at St. Joachim, Eucharistic adoration is held on the first Friday of the month. We would like to have someone praying in Adoration from 9 am until 6 pm with Benediction held at 6 pm. Could you not pray an hour with our Lord? Please sign up to spend an hour in prayer! More than one person can sign up for any given hour! ___9-10 am ___10-11am ___11-Noon ___12-1 pm ___1-2 pm ___1-2 pm ___2-3 pm ___3-4 pm ___4-5 pm ___5-6 pm Name_____________________________________
