Introducing new arts space5,300-square-foot arts space now at
South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre
The new home base for Semiahmoo Arts, the
South Surrey & White Rock Arts Society and the
Semiahmoo Potters Club is the South Surrey
Recreation and Arts Centre, formally opened on
May 10 after a soft opening in April.
The newly expanded facility, at 14601 20 Ave.,
represents 5,300 sq. ft. of dedicated arts space,
including a multi-purpose arts room, visual
arts studio, pottery studio, a planned café and
expanded lobby, as well as recreational features
such as a spin studio, a fi tness studio, a weight
room and a child-minding room.
The centre has been developed as a
partnership between the City of Surrey,
Semiahmoo Arts – for whom it now provides
the main offi ce – the South Surrey & White
Rock Art Society, which made a $250,000
contribution from its own coffers to the centre,
the Semiahmoo Potters Club, Arts Umbrella and
the Surrey YMCA.
Accommodation under the
aegis of Semiahmoo Arts –
including a pottery room at the
former White Rock Elementary
– has always been temporary
until now, Semiahmoo Potters’
Diane Petersen noted.
“And the OPCH was getting
too small and too cramped for
our shows,” she said.
“The new centre is much
more visible and much more
accessible. And one of the
things that excites is that
they’ve hired a new tech,
Tony Wilson, who’s very
accomplished – he was a
teacher in Montreal.”
Petersen said the club is also
grateful for the South Surrey White
Rock Arts Society’s contribution.
“Their generosity is a lot to do with why we’re
in this new space – it’s been great getting to
know these people.”
For more information on the South Surrey
Recreation and Arts Centre, call 604-592-6970, or

Party at White Rock Pier
Support the local arts scene
Celebrate White Rock Pier’s centennial with live music, dancing and a
large selection of delicious food and beverages.
On Aug. 28 from 7 to 10 p.m., supporters for Semiahmoo Arts will
gather for Party on the Pier, a much anticipated event that coincides with
the organization’s 40th anniversary.
Tickets are $100 per person, with a $40 tax receiptable donation for
supporting arts programming on the Peninsula.
Around 20 restaurants from Marine Drive and Uptown White Rock will
line the pier to offer free samples of their signature dishes.
B.C. wineries and local craft breweries will also be on site to showcase
their products, available through cash bars.
Admission includes a commemorative glass, which can be brought
home at the end of the event, as well as one adult beverage.
“Local artists will be painting in place,” says Barbara Cooper,
representative for Semiahmoo Arts. With the picturesque waterfront as
their subject, exquisite artwork is sure to be produced.
The end of the pier will be home to live music, featuring Vancouver-
based group Tom Lavin & The Legendary Powder Blues Band, with classic
reggae band Mostly Marley opening.
During the event, the winner of Here’s to the Pier! poetry contest,
which honours the 100th anniversary of the White Rock Pier, will be
announced. He or she will then present their poem to the audience.
“Artistic and cultural groups will also be present, including people
dressed in period costumes from throughout the decades,” says Cooper,
adding unique souvenirs, including modern and historical photos of
the pier, will be available for purchase. The event also includes a silent
auction. For the celebration’s grand fi nale, party-goers will be handed
battery operated candles to honour the 100-year-old White Rock Pier.
To purchase tickets, go to www.semiahmooarts.com, phone 604-536-
8333 or visit South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre offi ce, 14601 20 Ave.

Arts building gets new muralWhite Rock-raised artist designs
bold public artwork
Son of late local painter and White Rock
Players Club founding member Wynn Tetrault,
artist Richard Tetrault has a strong sentimental
attachment to the community.
The White Rock-raised painter, printmaker
and muralist has worked with Semiahmoo Arts
many times before with individual exhibitions
and fundraising projects.
But Tetrault, well known for murals in
Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and Port
Coquitlam – and projects as far afi eld as
Argentina and Cuba – had never painted a mural
in the town where he spent 20 formative years.
That all changed earlier this year when he
was commissioned by the City of White Rock
to do a solo mural on an east-facing wall of the
Semiahmoo Arts building in Centennial Park,
plus mentoring a collaborative mural on a north-
facing wall on the Leisure Services building.
Tetrault, a featured “master artist” at last
year’s inaugural International Artist Day Festival
in White Rock, completed the murals at the end
of May, in time for a June open house.
“The idea was to make a visual statement that
there is an arts-related centre here, and really
draw attention to the building,” Tetrault said.
“One of the concepts is that this area could
become an outdoor studio, with the addition of a
deck area.”
Tetrault’s own mural, which incorporates his
signature style – infl uenced by such schools
as German Expressionism and Mexican social
activist murals – brings in vivid symbolic
elements such as a painters’ palette and
tubes of colours, the seashore, a mask-like
face representing the dramatic arts and exotic
musical instruments representing a multi-
cultural fabric of creativity, and includes text
drawn from the writings of humanist Kurt
Vonnegut.
The second mural, co-designed by the
participants to employ a natural palette of
colours, provides a complimentary piece that
seems to blend seamlessly with the fi rst.
Artist Richard Tetrault painted a mural on the east-facing wall of the Semiahmoo Arts building in Centennial Park.

New donor wallSemiahmoo Arts supporters honoured
The new donor wall at the South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre
resembles an interesting piece of artwork.
Designed by Chris Thornley of Thornley Creative, the glass wall
features frog drawings surrounded by green pebbles that are labelled
with the names of donors to Semiahmoo Arts.
The design was inspired by panels that hang in the central stairway of
the same building. Susan Point, a Coast Salish artist, carved green frogs
on the panels because in many First Nations groups frogs are the voice of
the people. They symbolize innocence, stability and communication.
Starting at a donation of $500, businesses, organizations and
individuals can have their names added to the pebbles, which get bigger
as the donation amount increases.
“I didn’t want to have the regular boring donor wall. I wanted
something that was interesting to look at,” says Thornley, whose design
broke away from the traditional rows of plaques.
As more donations come in, glasses panels can be easily added to the
wall.
To see the donor wall or Point’s carved frog panels, stop by the
South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre, 14601 20 Ave. For information
about making a donation, call Mary Brunet at 604-536-8333 or email
[email protected]. Alternatively, call Barb Nelson at
