CLUB HAPPENINGS

For those of you who missed the picnic at Benbrook Lake, you missed some really good food. The BBQ was great and we had other fixins that really fed us well. An upcoming event that some have expressed an interest in is the Friday Night Drags Show-N-Shine at Texas Motor Speedway. We talked about getting a group together for the last Friday night of the event, which is July 27. Below is the particulars of the event: Schedule of Events: 6:00pm – Gates and Grandstands Open 6:15pm – 8:00pm Drag Racing Practice 6:15pm – 7:30pm Show-N-Shine & Parade Lap Registration in the Infield 7:00pm – 7:30pm – Show-N-Shine Judging 7:45pm – Parade Lap Registration Closes 8:00pm – Show-N-Shine Parade Laps 8:05pm – Drag Drivers Meeting 8:45pm – Racing Registration & Tech Closes 9:10pm – Opening Ceremonies 9:15pm – Drag Racing Pricing: Grandstand or Infield Entry $7 Drag Racing Participant Entry $20 Show-N-Shine Participant Entry $20 Infield Parking $20 FREE outside parking and bring your own cooler! PLUS Show-N-Shine Participants get to drive their car on the track! If I can let Brenna know 2 weeks before the event they will have a place for our club to be together and they can announce us on the PA system during the event. But that means that I have to have a firm count by the club meeting on the 15th. Think about it and let me know at the meeting or by email be-fore the meeting. I’m still putting some plans together for the rest of the year so keep watching the newsletter. Susan Brownell

HEY COWTOWN MOPARS MEMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well it's officially Summer in Texas and last week was our first week of 100+ temps, so we had a club picnic. If you didn't make it you missed out! We had 33 people and 1 dog. The dog, Dodger Hentz (affectionately know as "Dodge") was as well behaved as everyone else was. True to his name Grady says Dodge is very fast. If you didn't join us because of the temperature be sure and be there next time. The park is per-fect!!! A nice size pavilion, with power, shade, plenty of parking, no intruders and a very nice cool breeze coming off the water. Thanks to Susan and Rick for picking a GREAT location for a club picnic. Thanks to "Cookie" and many others for the great food. Thanks to Frank Smith for the sound and thanks to Mike Bearce for bringing the smoker with Bill's truck. We are looking at going to TMS in late July for a car show and drags. We are talking about taking the smoker and cooking for the club. Some could show, some could race and we all can eat. Susan will have more info. The Dallas Mopar Club will be having their annual car show Labor Day weekend and San An-tonio Mopar Muscle and Classic Car Show is Saturday October 20th noon to 4pm. I would like to see Cowtown Mopar support both of these shows. I know San Antonio is a little drive, but it would be a great road trip, nice to support another club and fun to see other Mopars. Please think about it. I was talking to my good friend Dean Allen today. He has been a mechanic for 55 years. Dean started working on cars at 17 years old. He worked at several local dealerships, has owned sev-eral shops and is a wealth of knowledge. Kirk will add Dean's cell number in the business card section of the newsletter. Dean would like to assist you with you car if you are stumped and need some help. Give Dean a call and he will do what he can to talk you through or answer your questions. Your questions are welcome from stock street cars to race cars. Thanks to Dean for this generous offer!!! See ya! Mark Buchanan

Happy Independence Day! I hope all of you were able to enjoy the holiday with friends or family. This is one day we should all be reminded just how blessed we are to be Americans. Kudos to Susan Brownell for setting up the club picnic on June 30th. Long-

horn Park at Lake Benbrook was a great location, with both shade and a cooling breeze. Ken Angyal outdid himself on the smoker with both the brisket and the hot dogs. I had never had an all beef, "Ball Park" dog before. Wow! Did not know what I had been missing. Not much in the way of club business until racing resumes. Hope to see some of you at the area shows and at the July meeting at Spring Creek. Have a great summer. Ken Key Veepster

Off The Wing by Barry Hansen The (Mo) Power Tour 2012 was in a word, awesome. Met up with two of our Cowtown Club longhaulers in Grove, OK, for the day 6 drive to Stillwater and day 7 to Grand Prairie. Traveled with a pack of 10 to 25 Mopars down some fan-tastic backroads across Eastern and Central OK. Such a blast to pop up over a rise or around a curve and see a long line of nothing but hot rods. Camped in two nice state parks, brought my own food, did it on the cheap, worked great. Can't believe averaged 15 mpg and bought premium gas twice for $3.39/gal. Ended in QuickTrip Park in Grand Prairie. Must have went well because Power Tour 2013 will start from QuickTrip Park. Do yourself a favor and plan next year to drive the first day or two. You will have a ball. Suggested TV watching. Stacy David's Gearz. He can do it all, fabrication, bodywork, driveline, plays a mean electric guitar. Projects take months, not days or a week. Doesn't talk down to the audi-ence. Must be a Mopar man because his parts runner is an old Ramcharger, has built many Mopar trucks, Mopar Military vehicles, Jeeps of all kinds, and helped Dodge to come out with the Ram Ex-press, the inexpensive (relatively speaking) stripped down, light, no frills truck with the HEMI as standard equipment. May have to rethink my ban on Top Gear. Per a suggestion I viewed an episode where one of the hosts drives a '68 440 Charger (on English backroads no less) and loved it so much he bought it. Af-ter savagely berating a Crossfire coupe, in a subsequent episode they drive a Crossfire ragtop against a similar Audi and Volvo. This time they loved the Crossfire. Go figure. The Arlington Coffee Clutch June meeting fun as usual. The cars were parked about 15 feet from the side room we had all to ourselves. We talked about some possible overnight trips in the fall, possibly to the two Route 66 museums in western OK or the Gran Prix track in Austin. Please give us your thoughts. The 2013 Dodge Dart competed at the X Games at TMS over the IndyCar weekend. According to the Star-Telegram it was doing great until the driver hit the wall hard. The next Sunday the Star-Telegram business section had an article about new domestic small cars coming out highlighted by the Dart. Until somebody convinces me differently, Speed McQueen sure looks like a Viper to me. Cars 1 a great movie, Cars 2 (even though it has its moments) a dud. If it's 100 degrees out and you drive 65 mph for more than an hour in your Charger with a 5/16” fuel line, you and your car will develop vapor lock and an incredibly annoying high speed miss. Ask me how I know. You might be a gearhead if...in class you hid a Hot Rod magazine behind your textbook instead of a Playboy. You might be a gearhead if...you go to bed thinking how to squeeze a few more tenths out and wake up with the answer.

Well June 3rd at Ardmore was a good day for racing and a great day for the North Texas Mustang Club. At the start of the day we had an 84 point lead and at the end of the day it was down to a 33 point lead. We will have our work cut out for us when we resume at the Motorplex in September. Congratulations North Texas Mustang club! Stay tuned!!! See ya at the track Mark
