Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Residents o Strathmore gathered to- gether on July 7, to let the Town know they plan to fght the proposed high-  way realignment. It qu ickly be came standing room only during the regular- ly scheduled council meeting. Hal Lust, owner o Strathmore Motors, spoke on  behal o business owners along High-  way 1. “We have concerns about the high-  way, and wanted to make council aware o how we eel and what we think will happen,” said Lust. There are approxi- mately 85 businesses and 1,500 people  working ull time/part time along the highway stretch. Residents ear moving the highway our miles south o Town  will destroy the local economy as has happened with the towns o Brooks and Vegreville when the highway was moved. “The town will shrink and cease to  be the vibrant community we love to live in,” said Lust. Another big ear is be- cause Strathmore is less than 40 miles rom Calgary; no traveler will go out o his or her way six miles to stop here  when they can just push the last ew miles. “Ev eryone has a stake in pushing to keep this highway here,” said Lust. Realigning the highway was an is- sue Strathmore had to deal with in the 1980’s. For a period o three months all  but three routes into Strathmore were closed, causing business to drop by 30 per cent. Through hard work and heavy petitioning the realignment was placed on a backburner to be let alone. Now the highway planning commission is once again talking about moving the highway, and the unconfrmed reason is due to the three sets o lights travelers have to pass through. The commission allegedly wants the highway to be non- stop rom Calgary to Saskatchewan. “This is going to be devastating and  we have to stop it,” said Lust. Lust is urging business owners and residents to start writing to our politicians and help fght the proposal. I accepted the proposal is not set to take eect or an- other 10 to 15 years.   Though the proposed highway re-alignment was the big issue of thenight, a few other interesting and im-portant tidbits were discussed duringthe council meeting July 7.BuiLding permitS

Since January 1, the Town has issued

30 permits for single-family dwellings; which is an increase over last year atthis time. There have also been 11 multifamily permits issued for a unit total of 77. As of July 6, a total of 723 busi-ness licenses have been issued, with 51  being for new businesses during themonths of April, May and June.BuS Campaign

Since the ‘we heard there’s room inStrathmore’ bus advertising campaign  began, the campaign on the websitehas received 796 hits, which indicatesthat the campaign is effective. WFCSS

Wheatland Family Community Sup-port Services nally had the budgetapproved and so the organization can

begin dispersing funds to some of thedifferent organizations, which have ap-plied for funding. Half of the funding will be sent out right away, while theother half will be sent out in the fall.ChamBer oF CommerCe

released green trip funds for $2 billion.  The cities of Calgary and Edmonton  were each awarded $800 million. Theremaining $400 million was awardedto the rest of the province. There aresome concerns, as it was made clear applicants for the funds would be re-quired to contribute at least one thirdof the capital cost of the project, withthe green trip fund providing the bal-ance. Members of the CRP committee will be meeting in Cochrane to reassessand determine where to go from here. The meeting will be on July 22.

Q: What can I do now to plan for my own funeral?

Perhaps the most important thing to do is to have an open discus-

sion with your family about your, and their, needs for your funeral.

Your local funeral home can provide you with booklets to aid you in

collecting necessary information as well as provide you with funeral

options that you may not have considered. Another step you could

choose to take now is to pre-pay a funeral account. Your funeral

director can help set up a funeral policy that is handled by an

insurance company. This means your account is not permanentlylinked to any specic funeral home and will follow you if you decide

to move. You may also choose to use another funeral home with no

penalties. These accounts can be set up as either monthly payments

or a lump sum and will accrue interest annually. The interest gained

will usually cover any market ination over the course of the policy.

Your funeral director can answer any further questions you may have.

One Strathmore mother’s worstear came to lie on June 6, when acar hit her two-and-a-hal-year-olddaughter. Christie Meyers has al-

ways worried about her children’ssaety when it comes to trafc onher street, Centre Street. When she

was in Grade Eight she had beencrossing the street to talk to hermother when she was hit by acar, and almost six weeks ago herdaughter Karlee was hit. In Chris-tie’s case she eels it was a case o miscommunication, both her andthe driver stopped, each probably thinking the other had stopped orthem, and both started to go againat the same time. Karlee had beenchasing a bird when she dartedout between parked cars and ontothe street. Fortunately the driverhad already been going under theposted speed limit and thoughKarlee was hospitalized or fvedays she is doing well.

“I don’t blame the driver. I don’t want her to think I’m doing thisto blame her, I just think some-thing needs to be done about thisstreet,” said Christie. She plans togo beore the Town at the councilmeeting on July 21 to see what canbe done to make her street saer.

“I’m going to the town and I’mgoing to talk to them about put-ting in stop signs mostly, and thelack o visibility. Hopeully some-thing will come out o it and bedone about the road so you eelsae, because I don’t eel sae onthis road.”  The only reason the Meyers

bought a house on Centre Street

is because they have our children

and Christie runs a home business, and the house drew her in with allthe space it provided to her, andher amily. The door has a latch at the top

and when it is open, it speakssaying the door is open; Christiehad it installed because she wasalready paranoid about the streetshe had moved onto.

“Basically my worst ear cametrue, the ear that I had when Imoved here happened,” said Chris-tie. Karlee physically is doing bet-ter, but she is traumatized andcontinues having nightmares.

High speeds have always beenan issue Christie has noticed onher street.

“I have driven down this roadseeing kids playing unsupervisedand thought one o them is goingto get hit by a car, and then minedoes,” said Christie.

“It makes me sick and angry ev-ery time a car goes racing by andI think that could have been theone that hit my daughter and she

would not be here today.”She believes three way stops

would help to slow down trafc onCentre Street, and hopeully makeit a less attractive road to travel un-less necessary. Christie wanted tothank her amily, riends, the fre

department, STARS, EMS, both theStrathmore and Children’s hospitaland Dr. Douglas and the RCMP, orall o their help with the accident.

At this point she does not plan togather people to come to council

with her but said i a petition isneeded and people would like tosign, they can contact her at [email protected]

The Roots of Empathy, ROE, pro-gram has been in Strathmore class-rooms all over the town. The pro-gram was founded in 1996 and todate have helped more than 325,000

kids. ROE brings babies, aged twomonths to four months, into theclassrooms to teach students, fromkindergarten to Grade Five, aboutempathy. The babies can’t be olderthan four months because one focusbehind the program is to allow thechildren to see how the baby growsduring its rst year.

“We have a different baby for eachclass because each class owns thatbaby for that duration,” said Kari  Jumaga, Roots of Empathy instruc-tor.  The children had the chance to

watch the babies grow, and to learnabout them. Each of the ve Strath-more schools, which hosted a baby in their classroom, had their nal visits in May and June.

The baby was going to the class-room every other week, with the  weeks they weren’t there being adiscussion time about the previous weeks topic. There are nine differ-ent topics and the instructor fromROE visited the classroom for 27 weeks.

At the beginning of every visita welcome song was sung for thebaby, and at the end of each classa goodbye song. Each of the class-rooms made a wish tree for theirbaby, things they want the baby tohave when it grows up. Each class-

room also checked how much thebaby has grown, both in height and  weight, since rst coming into theclassroom.

Emily Jackins brought her son Lu-cas to be a part of Monica Major’skindergarten class at Trinity Luther-an Christian Academy.

“It’s been fun to see how muchthey like watching him grow,” said Jackins on May 10.

On May 11 Candi brought her son

Jake, nine months, for his nal visitat Westmount Elementary. He was apart of Mrs. VanDriel’s 5C class. “It was great, I loved it, it was an expe-rience for myself and for Jake. I’msad its over, its been awesome,” saidCandi.

May 12 Jumaga was back at West-mount school with parents Ronand Amy, and their eight-and-a-half month old son Owen. This time it was for the 5B class. The class sangitsy-bitsy spider, which is Owens fa- vourite song.

“We just want him to grow up tobe a happy healthy adult,” said Amy, when asked what her wishes are forbaby Owen.

On May 25 Jumaga was off toBrentwood Elementary to let theclass say goodbye to eleven-month-old baby Brett. His mom Jennifereven brought his older sister Alycha,5, to say goodbye to everyone as  well. Councillor Lois Wegener alsoattended Brett’s last visit.

“I think its absolutely marvelous, I was amazed to see the children, andthe one little boy who thought he(Brett) was a part of the family and was sad to know he wasn’t going tokeep seeing him,” said Wegener.

“The fact they were so concernedabout the safety issues, and whatthe baby is eating and I was amazed

to notice the boys were more con-cerned than the girls.” Wegener sits on the board for the

 Wheatland Family Community Sup-

port Services, WFCSS. June 17 was the nal visit for ROE

in a Strathmore classroom. It was atSacred Heart Academy, SHA, for aGrade 1 class. Paityn Noll was theonly baby girl who was in the ROEthis year in Strathmore. For her -nal visit her parents Rick and Kim

and her grandmother came for apre-birthday party. Students boughtbirthday presents for Paityn.

“When you hear the kids say ‘she has hair, she has teeth’, I thinkit makes you appreciate the littlethings that you might not take thetime to recognize,” said Kim.

On top of the wish tree each visit ended with cupcakes, and ev-ery baby was given an ROE shirt, which said ‘Teacher’, because eachbaby was the teacher. For a whilethere was a fear funding may notgo through and the program wouldcease in Strathmore.

“The children were just so intothe babies’ lives, interacting withthem and some of them don’t get achance to be around a baby at home, which is why I think its so impor-tant. It’s a program we do support,I sit on (WFCSS) and it’s denitely a program I would personally voteon to keep funding, and I know weare,” said Wegener. The funding be-ing approved only solves a smallpart of what ROE is facing in Strath-more. They are looking for new par-ents who are willing to involve theirchild in the ROE program. The childmust be no older than four monthsto qualify. Another thing ROE is indesperate need of are more instruc-tors. If someone is interested in

becoming an instructor, but wantsmore information, they can go to  www.rootsofempathy.org and orcall 403-410-3808.

Wheatland County held an openhouse at the county ofces to deter-mine how the municipal reserve shouldbe spent. The open house took place on July 6

and only a handful of members came tospeak about how they think it shouldbe spent. Under the Municipal Govern-ment Act, MGA, the reserve can only beused for a public park, a public recre-ation area, school authority purposes orto separate areas of land that are usedfor different purposes. Currently the

reserve has $2.3 million in it, which isthe most there has been in years. Oncemoney is in the reserve it becomes uni- versal and will not be strictly designat-ed to the area in which it came from.Council wanted to gather members of the county so they could gure out what the people want to see done be-fore they make a nal decision.

“I don’t think there is a town in ourcounty that isn’t struggling for help,”said Councillor Alice Booth from divi-sion one. The money may be given all to one

purpose or it may be split between rec-reation and school divisions. Once the

money has been designated council hasno say over how it is used, but appli-cants are to provide an outline of whattheir purpose for it is.  After some discussion council and

the residents appeared to agree educa-tion is important and money should gotowards the school division. Residentssuggested a 75/25 per cent split, with75 per cent going to the school division. Another suggestion was to always keepone million in residual. Council will bediscussing and making their decisionsoon, and it should be brought forth atthe regular county council meeting on July 20.

ty council and Standard met with Townofcials on June 29. Town councillors were showing the County and Standardthe decits from the Civic Centre, Fam-ily Centre and other recreational facilitiesaround town. Reeve Ben Armstrong andCouncillor Bernice Bland came from theCounty.

“They were talking about how some of our ratepayers are giving them hell be-cause they want a Tier 3 hardball facility and it’s going to cost them $300-400,000dollars and they can’t afford it,” said Arm-

strong.“I also told them they are asking us to

pay for facilities that they never asked forinput on when they built it, they built it

without any participation from us andnow they are asking us to help pay for it.” The County recognizes their residents

use the facilities, and said in the pastthere had been a recreational grant but itno longer exists now.

“I was really upset about the whole at-titude on this thing,” said Bland.

Smaller municipalities, Rockyford, Stan-dard, Gleichen etcetera did everything ontheir own through the community,” said Armstrong.

If there were money coming from the

County it would likely be based on theold recreational grant fund. It would bedealt with as a total package, not a Townof Strathmore package.

“I think the best way to do that wouldbe through the regional concept that wehave,” said Armstrong.

“They were saying we can ll our are-nas with our own people, it was madeclear to them that the outside areas lookafter themselves and if we do this, its forthe whole area and not just for them,”said Armstrong.

“It was a good meeting I guess, for us Ithink the best way is when we deal withthat, is we deal with it as a regional is-sue.”

Is a Rabbit the Right Choice for a Pet?

Ask the Veterinarian!

Q

Aany people buy a pet on impulse. hey see a cute, uffy baby

bunny in a pet store and decide it would make a great pet. Before you buy that baby bunny, be aware of a few things:Rabbits can live ve or more years unlike mice – hey need a goodhome and plenty of attention. Rabbit urine is very high in ammonia, soit W smell bad if you do not clean often and have good ventilation.Rabbits and other animals very rarely get along mostly because rabbitsare at the bottom of the food chain & should never be left with your cator dog – as a dog or cat will attack the rabbit.Rabbits need attention. Rabbits should have toys and need plenty of human contact in order to be happiest.

To the Editor I am accompany-

ing Charles Lage of   Winnipeg who iscycling and travel-ling across Canadathis summer raisingawareness for au-

tism and to furtherautism research.Mr. Lage is an au-tism survivor and israising funds for astate-of-the-art au-tism therapy centrein Winnipeg.

Unfor tunate ly ,due to serious ve-hicle problems wefound ourselves“stranded “ inStrathmore for twodays while our ve-hicle was being re-

paired. On Wednes-day, July 7 at about8 p.m. I was at thelocal Subway onthe Trans-Canada

just west of Hwy 817, buying myself supper, I started

talked to a gentle-man, 45-55 yearsold who was there

with his wife and17 year old, teen-age daughter. Infact, that had beento the initial gist of

our conversationas my daughter

back in Winnipegis roughly the sameage as his daughter.

In addition to ussharing the trialsand tribulations of

raising a teenagedaughter in thisday and age, I wasalso able to talk tohim about CharlesLage and our cross-Canada bike tour, the challenges of

autism and futurepossibilities. I hadenjoyed our con-

versation immense-ly. But if that wasn’tenough, at the endof our talk, thisgentleman reached

into his wallet andgave me $25, say-ing, “Here, I hopethis helps with yourexpenses”.

I told him I couldissue him a tax re-ceipt back at our

hotel and I didn’teven have a busi-ness card with me.He said it was notnecessary.

I was complete-ly abbergasted

  by the generosity

and trust this manshowed in me,Charles Lage andour tour, as well as

 what we are tryingto accomplish.

 You have a beau-tiful community

Strathmore and if this mans actionsis any indication;

your town is alsolled with good de-cent people.

I would like tothank this man but

I didn’t even get hisname. He, his wifeand teenage daugh-ter drove off in anewer model, whiteGMC Envoy. On

  behalf of CharlesLage, myself and

for people facingthe specter of au-tism as well as oth-ers facing challeng-es in their lives, I

would like to thankthis man for hiskindness. In turn,

this mans actionsare a reection of the good people of Strathmore.

For more infor-mation about what

  we are trying toaccomplish, please

refer to the websiteof our Manitobaorganization www.ajns.net  With many

thanks, Richard C.

To the Strathmore Times and the good people of Strathmore

esidents of trathmore watched the sky sud-

denly darken, and hail and rain battered the

earth as the radio and television reported se-

vere weather warnings on July 12. ornado

warnings were issued and residents in andaround trathmore were told to take precau-

tions in case one did hit. Fortunately it didn’t hit

in trathmore but it was a close call.

Students at Expressions The DanceStudio took part in the Great CanadianDance Challenge from July 8 to 11. This was the rst time the group of 14 danc-ers had taken part in a competition of this level, which took place in Kelow-na, B.C. There were over 2,000 dancers

competing in the three-day competi-tion.

“I think they really enjoyed it. I thinkit was a really good overall experiencethat they can grow from and return tonext year and work towards to stay upthere near the top,” said Heather Thom-as, owner of Expressions The Dance Stu-dio. Everyone from the studio placed atthe competition, earning a total of threehigh silver medals, nine gold and twohigh gold. The dancers from the studioranged in ages from four to 16. LaneHabing, 4, won one of the high goldmedals with her Ms. Muffet character  ballet dance. Neve Raycroft, 7, won theother high gold for her tap solo.

“It was really fun, I enjoyed seeingthe differences in styles and choreog-raphy between studios and provinces,”said Brittney Standing, one of the danc-

ers. She hopes to return and said sheis grateful for the opportunity, and shefound the atmosphere welcoming eventhough it was competitive.

Desirae Thomas, 14, performed inve groups and won two high silversand three golds at the competition. De-sirae has been dancing for 10 years andhas been competing in some form sinceshe began dancing. She would like to

one-day work for Cirque du Soleil“I found it very fun and a very good

thing to work up to,” said Desirae. This was it for the dancers for this sea-

son, but in a few weeks they will beginchoreographing for next year. Heather said they plan to return to something of this caliber again.

The softball provincials had teams coming in from all over Alberta. There

were a few injuries including a broken leg. The Strathmore Thunder didn’t

suffer serious injuries, but they did have their top two pitchers out for their

Friday games. The Strathmore Thunder had to call in the relief pitchers

after the starters ended up on the bench with injuries.

The Softball Alberta Provincial Playoffs wereat the agricultural grounds July 9 to 11. Teamscame from all over to take part in the tourna-ment and to see who would go home with gold.

This was the third year Strathmore has hostedeither PeeWee or Bantam provincials and there

were 20 teams taking part during the weekend.Strathmore Thunder, Bantam B, was feeling goodcoming into the tournament after winning the

semi-nal league playoffs July 7, 10-0.“That took a turn real fast when the team’s top

pitcher Kirstyn Johnson had a base running crashin the top of the rst inning in the rst game, andreinjured her knee. She had just returned from

being sidelined for 10 days,” said Lanky John-son one of the organizers of the weekend. JasminGoldade, another starting pitcher, was already on the bench nursing a sprained ankle from theleague semi-nals game, which left the team ina hole.

Relief pitchers Hope Tornberg and MadisonMitchell were forced to be the starter pitchersand they tried their best to keep the team up andin the games on the rst day.

Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the Thun-der lost the rst two games on Friday in the four

game round robin.“Johnson was able to return Saturday for the

team on the mound and in a must win situationthe Thunder rallied back from a 5-0 decit againstSt. Albert to take a 7-5 lead,” said Johnson. There was a delay called because of the rain

and when the game started back up the defensemade a couple of errors. St. Albert scored four runs in the last inning to defeat and eliminate the

Thunder. The Thunder still has a Calgary league playoff

nal on July 14, and the team is hoping to end

the season with a win.

SQUirT ProVinCiaLS

Strathmore Bandits came home with a bronzemedal in Squirt “C” provincials in Red Deer.

Forced to play tie-breaking games after roundrobin play late Saturday night under the lights, the team defeated the Edmonton Royals to winthe medal.

Wiping out can’t wipe the smile off ve-year-old Ian Klassen’s face. He took part in mini shinny on July 9; it was

his rst ‘game’, and only the second time he had held a hockey stick. “He was pushing a chair in front of him in

January,” said his father Tim Klassen. Ian’s goal is to be a goalie one day, and he is hoping to play Timbits hockey

this year. Shannon LeClair Photo

The fth annual Hilltopdog trial took place on July 10 in Rockyford.

Five years ago, Chris and  Wendy Schmaltz wanted torecognize those dogs whocan do it all – sheep dog trialsas well as cattlework. They

themselves run 400 cows, and the worthiness of a good

ranch dog is not taken lightly. It was a eld trial in which

dogs were sent out 300 yardsand they were judged ontheir nesse work. There wasa set amount of time to dothe trial in and it was worth100 points.

“This year about 70 dogsran, coming from Texas,North Dakota, British Colum-

bia, Saskatchewan and Al- berta,” said Wendy Schmaltz.

Approximately a week ear-lier there had been a sheeptrial in Olds. For the past ve

years it has been a TripleCrown event, with a cattlearena and sheep arena trialtaking place in Olds andthen a eld trial. A dog thatdoes well and competes in allthree is a Triple Crown win-ner.

“We want to recognizethe dog and handler that do

well in all three trials. This  year Jimmy Walker and hisdog Angie from Hillsboro,

Texas were named the TripleCrown Open Champion andin reserve was his other dog,”said Schmaltz.

New this year was the Tri-ple Crown Nursery Champi-

on, which recognized the upand coming open dogs andhandlers. There were 12 dogscompeting in this event, withsome coming from as far as

 Texas.Donald Grant and his dog

Jeff, from Bowden, Alberta was the winner of the nurs-ery portion and the reservedog was Schmaltz’s dogCreed. Walker won a belt

buckle and $1,500, whichHilltop Ranch donated. Thesecond place winner walkedaway with $250. The judgefor the cattle arena trial andthe sheep eld trial was Cal-

vin Jones from Wales. Dogsfrom across western Canadaand the United States tookpart in this event.

The Bantam AA Reds were scheduledto play three games in a tournament host-ed in Strathmore rom July 10 to 11. Thefrst game on Saturday the boys lost by deault. One o the players hadn’t shownup or the game and they had to take aloss. They were ortunate though whenone o the other teams there oered aplayer or them to use so the boys could

still play a game and get warmed up or the aternoon.

Unortunately or the team, luck wasagainst them and their second game o the day was called due to rain. The only game the team was able to

play was on Sunday morning. They wereahead at the top o the seventh andlooked like they were going to win it,  when suddenly things changed in the bottom o the seventh and the opponenttook the lead.

“We got rained out the night game(Saturday), and played a good game inthe morning (Sunday) but we lost in bot-tom o the seventh. Its like playing poker, sometimes you lose, sometimes you win, you play with the cards you’re dealt,” saidcoach Jim Crooks. “The kids played allright, we just had some bad luck.”

Luck which Crooks and his team arehoping to change at the Tier 5 provincialstaking place July 17 to 18 near Edmon-ton.

Bad weekend for Reds AA

  The Reds Bantam AA

had an unfortunate

  weekend, calling one

game by default, one

due to rain and losing the

third in the bottom of the

seventh. The team thinks

things will be better at the

provincials over the July

17, 18 weekend.

The weather wasn’t the sunshine they wereused to, but that didn’t stop the teams rom having un.

“I think the weekend went well. The rain on Sunday did

not deter the teams rom playing and the rest o the weekend  was nice weather,” said Kim Proust, one o the organizerso the weekend. There was a 50/50 draw, which was won by Carol Adams. The Girl Guide Brownies took care o theconcession again this year and did a antastic job, said Proust. The top three teams rom the weekend were Runner with

since they were 16 and some old timers have participated in this tournament the entire 28 years. Lyalta Ball tournament is a tradition that will

not soon be broken. Wendi Tahlikowich Photo

Last week was the 16thannual JETS basketballcamp, hosted at the Strath-more High School. There were 26 kids participatingin the morning groups,Grade One to Four, and24 registered or the a-

ternoon Grade Five toNine. The camp began onMonday July 5 and ran un-til July 9. Pat Fule is thecoach, and it all began orhim when he saw a dem-onstration rom Stars bas-ketball in 1995.

“We liked it so much itand believed in the headperson that we got in-  volved and put our kidsin it. Then he asked meto take over the town o Strathmore organizationand get it running,” said

Fule.  The organization then

spread across Canada, eventually morphing intoanother group.

“We took on the name  JETS because we wantedto stay with the basics andhaving un,” said Fule. JETS stands or Just En-

joy The Sport, which is a

philosophy both Pat andhis wie Debbie believein. Both o the Fule’s areteachers in town, and they also run a weeklong vol-leyball camp. In the allthere is a basketball pro-gram then badminton andin the spring there are vol-leyball camps.

“We usually have ami-lies that will stay with us,and their younger kids will join as well. The townis big enough that we al-  ways get new people.

Some people will joinother sports, or may de-cide it’s not or them, but we do get a lot o repeatkids,” said Pat.  A lot o the kids who

have gone through thecamps will oten returnas coaches when they getto junior and senior high.  The camps are based on

stressing the undamen-tals, teaching basic skillsand showing the kids how un the sports can be, andsome o the kids will moveonto competitive sportslater on.

“We want them to haveun, and get ft and hope-ully learn a little bit aboutcooperation and sharingand being better peopletoo,” said Pat.  The volleyball camp is

in its eighth year, and be-gins on August 9.

 JETS are at it again

The JETS, Just Enjoy The Sport, practiced in a week long basketball camp. The camp is hosted

every July and is run by Pat Fule. Many kids come back year after year, but there are always new-

comers to the camp.shannon Leclair Photo
