Zeke Jabbour offered four reasons why clientsseek pros in an article that appeared in an earlierDaily Bulletin this week. That brings up the question,of course – why did Zeke’sregular client, MichaelLevine, decide to play withpros?

“I always had this fan-tasy,” said Levine.” I fanta-sized that if I could put inenough time I could becomeas good as the best. I couldn’t do much about thisfantasy while I was working full-time, but I sud-denly had the time when I turned 48.

“I knew I couldn’t improve as fast as I wantedto playing with partners of approximately my abil-ity. I had to play with good partners. How do youget a really good partner? You hire a pro. The diewas cast.

“In Michigan the two best pros were Chuck Burgerand Zeke Jabbour. I got together with Zeke and wewent to Bermuda. I was feeling very good there – wewere getting big scores and we were winning knock-out matches. My castles started to tumble, though, when Zeke told me I had made 18 mistakes in a 26-board session. I realized I needed some lessons.”

Zeke proceeded to give him some tips that we

Why do players seek pro partners?all could use. Sit up straight. If you do somethingwrong, don’t let the opponents know about it. Don’tlet a previous hand influence you in later play. “Youhave to look like a bridge player before you becomeone,” Zeke told me.

Levine’s work had begun. At first he looked forthe easier regionals, but as the lessons began to makehim more effective and more confident, he wantedto play more competitively. His partnership withZeke got stronger and stronger, and they began win-ning even at the national level.

Of the eight senior national events they’ve en-tered, they’ve been victors in five. And they weresecond in the Senior World Championships in Al-buquerque in 1994. He’s going to try for the worldchampionship again in the Senior Teams in Montrealnext month. His team will have Allan Siebert, ArnieFisher, Russ Arnold and Randy Pettit as well asJabbour.

“I’m very glad I decided to take the pro route,”said Levine. “Working with a pro gets you whereyou want to go much faster. Playing with a pro isway better than depending on the partnership desk.”

He believes that chemistry has a lot to do withwinning. “You have to play with partners and team-mates who have personalities that you click withyou. And of course the most important command-ment is that you must belive in yourself.”

They were second in the Mini-Spingold, 01500 Bracket: Allan Wolff, Russell Friedman, Maeve Mahon and JohnSegal.

Whose hand is it anyway?Mason Davis and Andrea Hayman reported the

following amusing deal from the second session ofFriday’s Fast Pairs.

(1) Club stopper?(2) Yes.

With his solid eight-card suit Davis was unwill-ing to allow the opponents to declare a spade con-tract. The lengths to which he went to do this createda bizarre situation at the table. After reaching 3NT,the opponents persisted with 4«. Not to be outdone,Davis bid 4NT. The opponents upped the ante by bid-ding 5« and Davis bid 5NT. Although neither sidewas entirely certain who was saving and who wasbidding to make, East–West decided that they hadheard enough so they doubled.

Since East–West are cold for 11 tricks in a spadecontract (plus 450), Davis had already secured a goodscore for his side because the defense can only de-feat the contract by two tricks (plus 300). What actu-ally happened turned the good result into a top.

West began with the ªA, and East played the 5.The ªK was next (East played the 2). Since Southhad merely promised a club stopper in the auction, but not necessarily a heart stopper, West decided thatEast’s echo in hearts was attitude. East, of course, thought she was merely giving count.

West continued with a third round of hearts anddeclarer, Hayman, spread her hand. 5NT doubled, making five, plus 670.

Running clubs twice!Declarer was playing in a notrump game, and she

ran dummy’s clubs, pitching losers from her hand. Then she crossed to her hand and ran five more clubs.Yes, it was in the 0-5 game. As declarer ran the sec-ond set of clubs, her partner said, “That club suitworked really well for you, didn’t it?”

Transfer doubles?John Potter was helping his daughter to learn

bridge. He advised her to learn Jacoby Transfers andNegative Doubles so she could play in the 0-5 games. She got a book and studied. Then she went to herfather and said, “This Jacoby Transfer stuff is ridicu-lous. Why should you have to go to three level whenyou have a weak minor?”

Her dad asked her how she’d handle it. “Easy. After my partner opens 1NT, I double, asking him tobid 2̈ . Then I can pass or correct, depending onwhich minor I have.”

“Great idea,” said Potter. “The only problem isthat there’s a rule against doubling your partner.”

“No there isn’t. I’ve done it. When my partneropened 1« and I was short of spades, I doubled her,and she bid a different suit.”

It seems the opponents didn’t know any better,so they accepted the unusual double.

Susan Freeman, who teaches bridge at the Mi-ami Valley Bridge Center in Dayton OH, preparedthese tips for her players who are new to duplicate:• Count cards face down before sorting to make sure

all hands have 13 cards.• Recount after sorting to make sure no card is hid-

den.• Decide your bid before you touch the bid box so

you don’t give extra information.• Place bidding cards sequentially on the table so

all bids can be seen and reviewed.• Bid in tempo to avoid giving information, which

may result in partner being banned from furtherbidding.

• Ask about opponent’s bids only when it is yourturn to bid.

• Direct questions to bidder’s partner.• For first lead, place your card face down on the

table and ask your partner if there are any ques-

tions. This will avoid leading out of turn or beinginfluenced by partner’s question.

• Play each card in tempo to avoid giving extra in-formation to your opponent or your partner.

• Call the director of the game if there is any ques-tion about any part of the game and let him or hermake any decisions or rulings. The directors arethere to help.

• Arrive early when playing with a new partner todecide partnership agreements and fill out a con-vention card.

• Be sure your convention card is complete, avail-able and visible during the game.

Its certainly trueBarbara Shaw was fixing her coffee when she heard

a woman tell her partner, “If the competition wasn’t sotough and we played better, we’d do better.”

Palmer decided that the South hand called for apreemptive bid and opened 4ª. Everyone passed. Shelost five tricks, but that obviously was a good savesince East-West could make a spade game despite theatrocious spade split. Certainly opening this hand with a one-bid is rea-sonable. But it didn’t work out well this time. Westwas able to use Michaels, so East-West easily foundtheir spade fit. South wasn’t willing to let the oppo-nents play spades, so she went on to 5ª. This wasdoubled and beaten three tricks – 9 IMPs to Bjerkan.

In the third quarter, Deas and Palmer had a verycomplicated relay auction. Deas, through a series ofasking bids, discovered that her side had all the nec-essary controls, so they got to a cold grand slam thatwas missed at the other table. This was the deal:

Players kids enjoy asleepover

If you happened to drop by Room 8209 last night, you would have seen 25 youngsters having asleepover. The group consisted of some of the olderyoungsters who are in the tournament child care pro-gram. Altogether Donna Compton of Dallas and hercrew have been taking care of 64 kids this week.

The kids were very excited about staying togetherall night long. They’ve already let it be known to theirparents that they’d rather be with their friends thanwith them.

The youngsters have had a busy week – field tripsgalore. They’ve been to the Air and Space Museum, the Zoo, the Museum of Natural Science, theChildren’s Museum, the Washington Monument, theLincoln Memorial, the Museum of American Historyand the Aquarium. They also play soccer and goswimming every day. And don’t forget that pizza partyThursday evening. Life’s a ball!

The children range in age from five months to 10years. This is the 15th time there has been a child careprogram at an NABC. After she had children,Compton still wanted to play bridge, so she broughtthem to tournaments and hired baby sitters. Some-times others joined in with her, and the child careprogram idea was born. During the recent BostonNABC, she asked the Board of Directors to make childcare a part of the NABC program, and they approvedthe idea. The ACBL supplied a tour bus this week sothe kids could do all their sightseeing.

It’s reached the point where the kids are moreexcited about going to an NABC than their parents.Between tournaments the youngsters e-mail eachother back and forth. Lots of parents agree that theywouldn’t be able to come to NABCs if it weren’t forthe child care program.

The child center opens every day at noon andproceeds through an afternoon session, a dinner ses-sion, and evening session and an after-hours sessionthat ends at 2 a.m. In other words, it’s open 14 hoursa day. Lots of the kids stay for the dinner session –they’d rather eat with their friends than their parents.“Sometimes the parents feel abandoned,” laughedCompton.

Compton needs a good-sized staff to handle somany youngsters. Working with her are Debra Marsh.Dallas; Sky Cappelletti, New York City; KatieStevens, Houston; Rhiannon Breed, Austin and AlisonRogers, Memphis.

In addition there are three junior sitters – they’retoo old for child care but too young to be senior sit-ters. They are Alison Cappelletti, Katie Klein andAlison Klein.

Hope you were quiet when you went by Room8209 last night. There were 25 kids sleeping in there.

Quadruple squeezeMark Itabashi came by to offer two interesting hands

South pitchedthe ©9-2, playing upside-down signals, while Northdiscarded the ª7 and a low club. Itabashi then cashedhis top cards in both red suits ending in dummy, not-ing that South had started with four diamonds. Whenhe now led a spade, South had to throw a club andNorth, not knowing the position of the ¨J, threw hislast heart. South might have made it easier for part-ner by sluffing the ̈ J instead of a low club, but thatwould not have mattered in the end. This was theposition:

A neat double squeeze. Later on he did it again –doesn’t that make it a quadruple squeeze? This exhibitcomes from the first qualifying session of the Fast Pairs.

The contract looks fine – except on a diamondlead, but that’s what West led. Wolpert ducked the©J, then won the diamond continuation as West fol-lowed small. Wolpert led a low club to dummy’squeen which won. Now the spade finesse held soWolpert crossed his fingers and cashed the ªA-K andthe «A before exiting with a third diamond. and they have had a positive influence on behavior, according to club owner Jan Bricklin.

Players are asked to flash a ZT card at an offend-ing player (or players) when they feel intimidated orabused. If the bad manners continue, the offendedplayers can call the director and get a ZT ruling.

“There are too many new players who are simplyafraid to call the director when unruly behavior oc-curs,” said Bricklin. “These cards can be very useful.I think they are a very good reminder.”

The Facts: 3NT made four, +630 for E/W. Theopening lead was a low heart. The director was calledat the end of the auction. North said he would havebid 3̈ at his second turn (for a club lead) if he hadknown 1NT was forcing. East said his bid could bebased on any hand type. The director allowed the tableresult to stand because North had the opportunity tobid 3̈ at his second turn and chose not to.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the director’s ruling.Only North spoke with the reviewer. North said that, had he been properly informed of the meaning of 1NT,he would have raised to 3̈. Then, against 3NT, part-ner would have led clubs allowing N/S to hold thecontract to nine tricks.

The Panel Decision: Five experts were polled. They were asked whether it would make any differ-ence to them if 1NT were Announced or not. Twosaid they would always raise if not vulnerable. Threesaid they would make the same call regardless ofwhether or not 1NT was Announced as forcing. Thepanel believed that there was so little connection be-tween the infraction and the damage as to render theappeal without merit. The table result was allowed tostand and N/S were assessed an Appeal Without MeritWarning.

The Facts: 4ª went down one, +100 for E/W.The opening lead was the ©10 (Rusinow) to the king, followed by the ̈ 7 to the king, the ̈ 9 to the jack, and the ̈ A ruffed high, promoting a trump trick forEast. During the play of Board 32, South approachedthe director away from the table and said that Easthad asked about the 2̈ bid, specifically about thelength of the suit.

The director ruled that East’s question made avail-able to her partner unauthorized information that sug-gested his club switch at trick two. Under Law 16AWest’s play of a low club was a choice from amonglogical alternativess which benefitted his side. There-fore, the contract was changed to 4ª made four, +620for N/S.

pleted. West thought North looked surprised after the2ª bid. North admitted to having been surprised, butwasn’t aware of whether it was noticeable. South wasunresponsive when asked about his partner’s actions.N/S claimed that their system required South to re-open. The director ruled that pass was a logical alter-native for South and changed the contract to 2ª downtwo, +100 for N/S. N/S were instructed to bring sys-tem notes to the hearing to reinforce their statementthat their system required a reopening double.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling.N/S stated that they were very aggressive, balancingin either direct or balancing seat with hands that wereshort in the opponents’ suit. Doubles were always fortakeout and by agreement South did not need anypoints, merely heart shortness, to double.

North acknowledged the he had reacted to West’ssecond bid. He said he had to look twice because if2© had been bid he would have doubled for takeout.N/S said they are well-known in their area for theiraggressive tactics at matchpoints. No system noteswere provided. West said she noted the reaction whenit happened and thought it likely that all had noticedit. East was uncertain that a reaction to the 2ª bidhad occurred.

The Panel Decision: The panel believed thatNorth had reacted to the 2ª bid and that it was pos-sible that it was noticed by South. Thus, there wasunauthorized information. Since N/S could not pro-duce system notes or otherwise confirm their allegedagreements, it was decided to poll experts to deter-mine if pass by South was a logical alternative. Fourexperts were given the auction minus the extraneousinformation and all passed. They all agreed when toldof the reaction by North that it would suggest actionover inaction in the passout seat.

Pass was deemed to be a logical alternative andthe contract was changed to 2ª down two, +100 forN/S. Since N/S could not demonstrate to the panel’ssatisfaction that their agreements were as stated, theirappeal was deemed to be without merit and an Ap-peal Without Merit Warning was assigned.

DIC of Event: Terry LavenderPanel: Mike Flader (Reviewer), John Ashton,

Matt SmithPlayers consulted: Mildred Breed, Barnet

Shenkin, and two players with 3000 masterpoints

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing. At the end of the auction East asked if the 2ªrebid showed six hearts and how many clubs the 2¨bid promised. East was in the habit of asking morequestions than most players. West said he tends toplay fairly quickly and goes for the clearest route to aset on defense. A club shift could enable the defenseto cash two or three club tricks before declarer ob-tained a discard, had declarer started with thedoubleton ©Q. No other play was attractive to him.

N/S believed that the question about the club suitsuggested that East held a club honor, an impressionthat was reinforced by the speed with which Westswitched to a club.

The Committee Decision: A player is normallyallowed to ask questions without compromising hisside’s options. The Committee was able to confirmthat East is well known in her area for her tendencyto ask questions about the opponents’ bidding. Addi-tionally, N/S’s teammates had complained earlier inthe match about the number of questions East askedwhen she played against them.

East’s holding of ̈ K-9-6 in front of the 2̈ bid-der is not such that she would want to draw attentionto her “strength” in the suit to partner and declarer. Her known habit of asking more questions than theaverage player further reinforced the non-informa-tive nature of the question.

Thus, the committee decided that East’s questionabout the club length shown by South’s 2¨ bid didnot convey unauthorized information to West. Thetable result of 4ª down one, +100 for E/W, was al-lowed to stand.

The Bridge TripBy Gary King

Gary King of Houston is a Silver Life Master whowrites a column for 299er players in the Scoredcard, the District 16 publication.

Over the years I have spent time talking with quiteliterally hundreds, if not thousands, of students aboutbridge. I talk with prospective players who are con-sidering beginning lessons and with rabid duplicateaddicts who are consumed with the game.

What strikes me as most interesting is how manythings are reflected in this game that we play andlove so much. In numerous ways, this game is likeother sports and even like life itself.

Several years ago I received a telephone call froma previous student. She and her partner had a disputeabout a particular hand and called so that I couldmediate.

We discussed the auction and the hand (she wasa GOOD student because she had the auction andcomplete hand written out including all passes, vul-nerability, dealer and every hand which remarkablyhad 13 cards).

After a few minutes of discussion she sighed andwith a little frustration said, “Do you ever think I willget this game?”

How would you answer that question? Have youever felt that way?

My answer was very straightforward. I replied,“You are thinking about this game all wrong!”

There is no Utopia. There is no plateau at whichyou arrive and realize that you know everything thatyou need to know. There is no heavenly-like exist-ence where you never make mistakes and can playwith little or no effort.

You must realize -- and learn -- that the enjoy-ment of this game is the trip. Learn to enjoy yourtravels along the path to becoming an accomplishedplayer. Enjoy the scenery, the people and the experi-ence.

It is the trip that is the fun. Do not be like thevacationer who is in such a hurry to get to the finaldestination that he views the Grand Canyon from thecar while passing by.

Stop and take in the enjoyment and pleasure thatthis game has to offer. Enjoy the game, enjoy thepeople, enjoy making good decisions, enjoy your winsand enjoy the wins of others.

Bridge is also an escape for many players. Dur-ing a three-hour duplicate game all the stresses oflife and everyday living can be forgotten. I have seenplayers with serious health problems able to take abreak from concerns and play for a few hours. Whata stress reliever.

I have seen people who are meek and mild-man-nered in everyday life get to live somewhat vicari-ously at the bridge table playing aggressively and tak-ing risks that they are not allowed to take in day-to-day life.

I am also fascinated as how much this game ofbridge is similar to other sporting or competitive ac-tivities. For example, in many ways this game is likegolf. Good golfers spend time doing two main things.

First: when they want to work on their skills, theydrive to a practice range and spend an hour moreworking with one or two shots in an effort to honetheir skills.

Second: when they go to a course and play 18holes, they PLAY the game. The course is not theplace to practice your skills. The course is the placeto try to use the skills you have to the best of yourability.

These are two different activities, which relate totwo different purposes and two different mind-sets.

Bridge should be approached much the same way. There is a time and place for you (or you and partner)to work on your game and try to develop and perfectskills. This is often alone with a book or across thetable from one another with yellow pad and a No. 2pencil.

There is also a time to play the game. This isusually at the bridge club or local tournament. Thisis where you should use the skills you have and focuson getting the best results possible.

If you recognize areas that need work (in yourown game or in your partnership), make a brief noteand discuss it later. During the play is generally notthe time.

Just sit there? When Ralph Hirshberg was reprimanded for

giving hints to declarer as dummy, he was aghast.“What am I supposed to do when I’m dummy --just sit there?”

“Like my floor directors!”A player was telling a story about how a hand

was bid. “He had ace-king fourth in spades andace-king sixth in clubs and something -- well, hisred cards didn’t matter. He opens a club and it goespass-pass-something and he bids a spade. It wenttwo hearts and it went four spades or something. Idon’t remember the exact auction, but it went roundand round and when it . . .”

At this point Harry Goldwater broke in to say,“You sound like one of my floor directors.”

"Where are my cards?"It happened at a sectional tournament in

Seekonk MA. A furious thunderstorm was rak-ing the area, and suddenly part of the hotel’s roofgave way and the players were deluged. Fortu-nately it was a very large playing area, and ev-eryone pitched in to move the tables and chairsand supplies into the dry part of the conventioncenter. Moments later the storm was forgottenand everyone was playing bridge – except onetable.

“I can’t find my cards. I was in the middleof playing a hand and now I can’t find my cards.”A major search took place – no luck. Then oneof the players started to laugh and pointed to theplayer’s feet. There, tucked in his socks, wereseven cards. That’s where he put them when thedeluge began.

At the very least, wait until the round is over andyou have stepped away from the table.

Try to locate a mentor. A mentor should be aplayer with greater experience and one to which youhave at least regular access (in person, by phone oremail). Use the mentor not to teach you but to helpyou and partner work out the root cause of problemsin your bidding and play. With the root cause identi-fied, you can then work on those skills on your own.

Most players are willing to act as a mentor if ap-proached the right way but you must also do yourpart. I have had players come to me and begin: “I hadsome spade and hearts, not sure how many of each, and I really do not remember the auction but I thinksomeone bid diamonds. What should I lead?”

You have got to be kidding. Bring a hand withthe auction clearly written out (which players werepassed hands?), the vulnerability and the completehand (S-H-D-C in order). Check to make sure youhave all 13 cards. If you want good advice, bring agood setup.

If you think about this game for a minute, it isbeautiful in its simplicity. The laws of the game donot dictate how you and partner communicate. At anygiven time, the methods you choose to use are totallyup to you. You can use whatever tools you think arein your best interest. It is this flexibility of designthat keeps a player continuously striving to improve. It is also this simplicity that keeps providing greaterand greater enjoyment from the play.

In conclusion, my advice to the advancing playerat any level is to spend time working on your gameand working with partner. The rate at which you ex-pend effort in this regard is up to you and the timeyou can devote. Also spend time playing the gameand enjoying it.

Do not mix the two activities. Your results andattitude will improve. Let me hear from you.
