Summer seems to have finally arrived in the Northwest. Sunny days and warm weather delight us. Having longer evenings to take walks, ride bikes, play with the kids are moments we cherish.Summer's also time for vacation, taking time to rest and be renewed for the work that lies ahead. This year though, summertime and vacations are so different. We’re wearing face masks. Movie theaters, water parks, and many vacation spots are closed.Yet, people are being very creative. “Staycations” with family groupings and close friends have become a joy.I reflect on all this in relationship to the teachers and staff of our parish school. Normally, I do not see them at school during the summer until early August when they come in for a few hours once or twice a week to prepare their classrooms. This summer though, they have been working diligently to prepare our school to be open five days a week following proper protocols and ensuring a safe and healthy environment for children in these unprecedented times.I am extremely grateful for their dedication and their service. For them, this is not simply a job. It is a vocation. It is a life of discipleship following the example of Jesus Christ.I urge you to please take some time to read this update from our principal, Connor Geraghty. As you do so, do not focus on the national news narrative concerning opening schools. Focus rather on our school, Saint Michael Parish School, and what we are doing to address the challenges that we face.Once again, I’m grateful for all the work that the faculty and staff are doing to enable us to offer truly Christ-centered education and formation in the faith.

Dear Saint Michael Parishioners,

Our planning efforts are well underway for a return to 5-day per week school on our campus for the up-coming 2020–2021 school year! Our back to school plan is published on our school website and ex-plains what we are doing to ensure a safe environ-ment for all that retains our Catholic “family of fam-ilies” charism and our school mission. Our plan also includes a virtual learning option that provides ac-cess to a Saint Michael Catholic education for fami-lies that would prefer to have their children learn at home for next year.

This summer we are doing everything that we can to prepare for our return to the school building in the fall, as well as providing access for all families who would rather have their children learn at home. Teams of teachers and staff members are helping to move forward each component of the plan and there is great enthusiasm, positivity and energy to make this vision a reality! Please keep our school commu-nity in your prayers as we journey through this sum-mer of preparation.

Throughout this summer we are actively enrolling students for the upcoming school year. Tours are available and can be requested through our website or by emailing [email protected]. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us this summer to ex-plore the possibility of sending your children to your parish school.

Blessings,

Connor GeraghtyPrincipal

ASK FR. LOU

This is an ongoing series from Fr. Lou for the Year of the Eucharist about the Mass. If you have other questions, he still wants to hear them! Email him at [email protected] and he will try to briefly answer you. Let us know about Whom we love, so that we might love Him all the more!

You have probably noticed during Mass that the things we use are a little more fancy than your dinner table! The vessels that we use at Mass we recognize are carrying something we consider really important and doing something really import-ant! In the same way that we would want to pull out "the nice china" for a special guest, the Church throughout the ages has given us the opportunity to pull out the nicest things for Jesus! The Church is like Mary Magdalene, pouring out the most precious things in great thanksgiving for Jesus (cf Mt. 26:3-13). We are aware that these are more than just dishes. Even in the Jewish traditions, the cups and plates used for worship are rit-ualized and stylized—they are meant to signify that what is going on here is something important. For us at the Mass, we recognize that we are celebrating the whole mystery of the life of Jesus. The Liturgy of the Eucharist commemorates the Last Supper, the Passion and Crucifixion, the Resurrection from the dead, and Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. During this act of thanksgiving, we use special vessels to hold the Eucharist. The Church asks us to use precious metals for the sacred vessels , with few exceptions (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 328ff). These vessels are intended to remind us of the impor-tance of the Eucharist and that “all artists who, prompted by their talents, desire to serve God's glory in holy Church, should ever bear in mind that they are engaged in a kind of sacred imitation of God the Creator, and are concerned with works destined to be used in Catholic worship, to edify the faithful, and to foster their piety and their religious formation” (Second Vatican Council, on Sacred Liturgy, 127). The most common vessels seen are:

The paten is a small round plate-like dish which holds the host for the main priest celebrant. Sometimes a ciborium takes the place of the paten. A ciborium is a larger sacred vessel for holding more than one host. Sometimes it is raised on a stem and looks like a chalice with a cover, sometimes it doesn’t have a stem.

The chalice holds the Precious Blood. There is at least one, and they vary in shape and size. There have been a hugely

diverse number of different styles of chalices, but the most import-ant aspect to remember is that they give a good glimpse of the importance of what they contain, the precious blood of Jesus!

At the Mass, we enter into Jesus’ own thanksgiving and gift of self to His Father. The early Church would often use the Book of Revelation to teach about the Mass. This painting (pg. 3) by Hubert and Jan van Eyck which makes up a part of the Ghent Altarpiece known as “The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” highlights this great ‘coming together’ of the entire people of God around the Lamb once slain, who now lives forever giving thanks for His Gift of life and salvation, and returning all to Him, who lives and reigns for ever and ever (Revelation 5)!

Finally, it is especially important during this time that we believe that if we receive even the smallest fragment of the host we receive all of our Lord, body and blood, soul and divinity, even if we don’t receive from the chalice. This, in the West, has been known as ‘concommittance,’ in that, now that Jesus is resurrected, His Body and Blood are not separated from each other, and so when we receive one, we receive all of the One who lives and reigns and enters into friendship with us.

RACHEL'S CORNERHOPE & HEALING AFTER ABORTION

“This was a 20-year weight taken off me. My heart had become hard as a rock. Until today I had abandoned God completely. I will give Him now my lukewarmness and allow God to be God. Thank you, Project Rachel.” – TestimonialJoin us for a Rachel’s Vineyard Healing Retreat for women and men. We know what that hardened heart feels like as well as trying to make it without God. You don’t have to go on like that. Our lives changed, and so can yours. Fall 2020 Retreat: September 18–20

SMALL GROUPSTAKING THE NEXTSTEP

Many groups continue to meet year round. We encourage all small groups to continue to meet during this time of isolation, to maintain the all-important contact with their parish family. There is also a wonderful new tool from Evangelical Catholic called Nextstep that we asked all facilitators to use with their group for the eight weeks after Easter. Here are some com-ments from facilitators and group members:

“Being part of the small faith sharing group and going through these resources has helped me stay connected to Saint Michael and to those in my group. It's been a blessing to meet weekly.”

“Reaffirmation of what I'm already doing in my faith journey.”“There is freedom in the discipline of learning and practicing how to share our faith. I don't have to be 100% on tip top of knowledge but to always depend on the Holy Spirit to guide.”

“Going through Next Steps was inspiring. We need to follow the Holy Spirit to keep growing in our Faith.”

“Reaffirmed the need to reflect and pray over the scriptures especially in preparation for Mass.”If you would like to use Nextstep with your group or on your own just go to ecnextstep.com and set up an account (it's free!) Facilitators, please go through the Becoming a Guide module before starting the other modules with your group. Anyone can set up an account and go through the modules. Learn more about prayer, meditating on God’s word in Scripture, getting more out of Mass and being reconciled in confession. If you are not now part of a small group but would like to join one virtually, please contact Michaela Moreau at (360) 292-7104 or [email protected]

SHOULDER TO SHOULDERPARISHIONERS HELPING PARISHIONERS

How many times have we heard Fr. Jim marvel at the generosity of Saint Michael parishioners? We are blessed to be a family of families who truly care about one another. That spirit of generosity is clearly demonstrated in the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry, which works through a special fund set up to help parishioners who are struggling financially.Parishioners who find themselves in a financial crisis simply complete a confidential application, which is then screened by a committee of parishioners who, in turn, make a funding recommendation to Fr. Jim. If approved, the parish issues a check directly to the service provider–the doctor, landlord or roof repair company, etc.– not the applicant.Applications are available on the parish website and are held in strict confidence.Questions about applying for Shoulder to Shoulder help?Call Chris Peterson, Parish Administrator at (360) 754-4667.

The Saints and the EucharistGo, then, to Communion, my chil-dren; go to Jesus with love and confi-dence; go and live upon Him, in order to live for Him! Has not the Divine Savior said, “Come to Me, all you that labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you”? Can you resist an invita-tion so full of love and tenderness? Do not say that you are not worthy of it. It is true, you are not worthy of it; but you are in need of it. If Our Lord had regarded our worthiness, he would never have instituted His beau-tiful Sacrament of love: for no one in the world is worthy of it…. Do not say that you are sinners, that you are too miserable, and for that reason you do not dare to approach it. I would as soon hear you say that you are very ill, and therefore you will not take any remedy, nor send for the physician.

For ReflectionWhat really happens at Mass?

Do I participate in the Mass with

my whole being—mind, heart,

voice, and body?

Does my participation in the liturgy

make a difference in my life?

Through the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection, God has redeemed us. This is the very heart of the Good News which the apostles proclaimed and which the Church proclaims

today. This free gift of God gives meaning to our lives: Indeed, “our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed” (from the Easter Proclamation, Roman Missal). And through the liturgy, this great work of redemption is ongoing. In the liturgy, Christ continues to act on our behalf. When the Church gathers to celebrate Eucharist, something happens: Christ, truly present, acts through, with, and for us, continuing the work of redemption.

The faithful express the mystery of Christ. The liturgy is not some-thing the priest does and the people passively receive. As Catholics, liturgy is the very language we speak. Gathering to celebrate the liturgy Sunday after Sunday is our primary means of coming to know Christ and of expressing that mystery through the offering of our time and devotion. Our gatherings in turn reflect the mystery of Christ, who acts through us in the world today. Through our conscious participation in the Eucharist, we learn to live in closer communion with Christ.

Archbishop Paul D. Etienne The Work of Redemption: Eucharistic Belief and Practice in the Archdiocese of SeattleRead the whole pastoral letter at NWCatholic.org

The liturgy is not something the priest does and the people passively receive.
