ach year, members of Vaughn’s Dojang take on various community and charitable projects. Participation in events such as self-defense seminars, blood drives, clothing drives, and fund raisers are an important part of being a student at Vaughn’s. The most recent fund raiser Vaughn’s sponsored was a kick-a- thon to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Nearly 30 students kicked 14,588 times on May 5, 2007, raising over $4,000 for the hospital. The event lasted about two hours, with students and instructors on hand to help count kicks. Sah Bum Nim donated a bike to the student who raised the most money. Ms. Hannah White, [6th gup] and member of Vaughn’s Special Dragons class raised $380 and took home the bike. With the success of the drive, Vaughn’s will be making the kick-a-thon an annual event! Another important community support event Vaughn’s hosts is a drive to support the Bethesda Project. For the last 6 years, Vaughn’s has organized a collection every winter. The Bethesda Project provides shelter, food and support services to the homeless of Philadelphia. The dojang collects t-shirts, gloves, soap, razors, shaving cream, and other necessities. Students from all classes generously donate such items each holiday season so that others can have some of the basic necessities. Vaughn’s has also worked with the American Red Cross since 2002, sponsoring 2 blood drives each year. The most recent, held on Sunday, March 4, 2007, was a great success. With over 50 donors presenting, and 44 collected units, Vaughn’s exceeded its goal of 40 units. We believe that a blood drive is an excellent way to help others. So many patients need blood each year that the American Red Cross is always in need of donors. Sponsoring a drive is easy; the Red Cross provides all the materials and does all the set-up, all that is required is for donors to be willing to donate. Each drive, many Vaughn’s students take time out of their Sunday giving blood or spend time at the dojang in case the Red Cross needs anything. Gup and Dan students alike can participate in the blood drive. Some of the other community or charitable events Vaughn’s sponsored during the last year were free demonstrations at the Audubon Elementary School and the Pottstown YMCA, free self-defense seminars at Phoenixville Hospital and the Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation, collected clothes for the Yankton Sioux Native American Tribe in Marty, South Dakota, ran a “Brick Campaign” and a cell phone drive to raise money for the WTSDF Building Fund. Vaughn’s dojang takes its responsibility to the community seriously. As martial artists, we have an obligation to give to others. Not just teaching the art to others, but to making the world a better place. It follows that if we can help those around us, we are spreading the ideals of the art we study, even if our contributions are ones we make when not in our dobohks. That’s why Vaughn’s sponsors so many charitable and community events each year.
