Kilian Community College Issue 20 Page 2

As a student at Kilian Community College, you’ve al-ready made an important decision about your future and the value of education in helping you reach your goals. As you continue to work toward those goals, it’s also important that you keep planning for that next step in your educational career. As you ask yourself, “What’s next?” you may want to consider the opportunities available to you right here at Kilian through a partnership with Presentation College. Through LearnSiouxFalls.com, the two Colleges are working together to offer students Associate of Science degrees in Life Style Coaching and Medical Assisting and Bachelor of Science degrees in Business and So-cial Work. Through these academic programs, Kilian and Presentation are helping students advance their careers in this competitive job market. For Kilian students or graduates, LearnSiouxFalls.com offers several advantages. The degrees are offered at reduced tuition rates, and there are many options to fit your schedule with online and videoconferencing courses available, as well as day, evening, and week-end classes offered on-site at Kilian. If you’d like to learn more, you’re welcome to attend an

informational open house on Monday, July 12th

from

11 AM to 5 PM in Room 127. You’ll get the chance to

meet with the program advisors and ask specific ques-

tions about the degrees, the required courses, and

your career options. If you can’t make it that day, you

can also contact Trista Dunsmoor. Her office is lo-

cated here at Kilian in Room 139, so stop by, call

(221.3139), or e-mail

([email protected]).

Hard to believe that July is here and we have passed the half-way point in 2010! As the tem-perature grows warmer, and the days get shorter, we want to give you an update on some of the changes you have seen inside and outside Kilian this summer and what to expect when you re-turn for Fall Semester:

Stop by the Student Lounge on first floor and check out the improved selection in the new vending machines. Cold drinks, for example, have gone from just 9 sodas up to 45 drink choices. The coffee machine now has 15 options! If you don’t find your favorites, tell a Kilian staff mem-ber. We can offer just about anything, if we know what you like.

A new sidewalk has been added from the parking lot to the patio, and with some TLC it’s quickly become a colorful entrance into the building. Thanks to the vision and leadership of Jim Smorada, along with the green thumbs of a number of staff and student helpers, more plants will be added around the building throughout the summer to beautify the Kilian grounds. If you have plants to donate, please tell Jim. He will quickly become your friend for life!

Grants and donations of nearly $100,000 have already come in to support construction of a new Chemistry Lab at Kilian! Architects are at work on a design and construction could begin by mid-August with a January 1 completion date. The lab will be located in the northwest corner of the building in what is now a large, vacant storage room. Classes could be offered in Spring 2011. The Lab is vital to the development of new programs in Health Care and Sustainability at Kilian.

Faculty, staff and students will be accessing improved Internet service on better computers by the start of Fall Semester. Many new computers will replace older ones throughout the building, and even more new monitors have been ordered to replace the antique “cube” monitors in some of the labs and SSC. In addition, an upgrade to high-speed Internet service through Midcontinent will provide all users with faster, more reliable access as well.

Fresh air will return to all classrooms by the start of Fall Semester! We were sorry when bro-ken gears and failing parts forced us to remove cranks from all the building windows. Every classroom and office window (all 65 of them!) will be replaced during the month of August, so as to minimize disruption to students and faculty. New windows aren’t something you may quickly notice, but hopefully it will help to improve the seasonal temperatures in the classrooms.

One project you will notice here in August and September has nothing to do with the college. If you look across the river to the northwest, or down the bike trail to the south, you will see a lot of construction traffic and new, large pipes. The city is replacing a main line that runs from about 49

th & Southeastern northward past Falls Park. A section of this line is located under the bike

trail just outside Kilian. Our section of line will be replaced beginning August 2. To prepare for the project, fencing will go up around the perimeter of Kilian sometime in July. Don’t be alarmed, it’s only temporary. Hopefully, the project will be completed and the fencing removed by mid-September.

Finally, keep an eye out for a new TV commercial featuring “Chip” and Kilian Community Col-lege. The commercial should begin airing on all local stations by August 1. Improvements to our web site, including new pictures featuring several Kilian students, are also underway and should be on-line about that same time. Have a great summer semester!

STUDENT REFERRAL CARDS

Do you know someone that is contemplating going to col-lege? Invite them to come check out Kilian. Kilian offers medical, business, human ser-vices and general education courses. Fill out a referral card and both you and your friend can get a $25 bookstore voucher the first semester they attend. For more information contact Mary Klockman in room 104 or at 605-221-3100.

Recently we received a request from Reanna J., the daughter of a Kilian student. Reanna would like us to have a coloring contest. I think that is a great idea. Although I do not have prizes at this time, if your child would like to draw a picture relating to a parent attending school or Kilian in general, I would love to display them in my office for a period of time. Please submit drawings to Mary Klockman in room 104 or pick up a coloring sheet from the front desk to bring home to your kids. Thank you Reanna for the idea!

For many students at Kil-ian the next big step is to transfer to a four year school. There are impor-tant steps that should be taken when considering a transfer. Here are some suggestions to help you with a smooth and hassle free transfer.

Look at different institu-tions. It is important to find a school that fits you. First and foremost, make sure the school you plan to transfer to offers the degree you want to pursue.

Talk with admission rep-resentatives from other schools. Make sure you un-derstand the requirements of the institution for transfer stu-dents. Admissions require-ments for freshman are sometimes different than for transfer

Kilian Community College Issue 20 Page 6

Students. For instance Presentation College re-quires an ACT score for all students with less than 30 credit hours; however, if you transfer into PC with more than 30 credit hours, the ACT is no longer re-quired. Each college has their own admissions proc-ess, make sure you are completing all of the neces-sary steps for admittance.

Pay attention to the de-

gree requirements at your transfer institution. Keep in touch with either an ad-mission rep or an advisor at the school you plan to at-tend. Specific Social Sci-ence, Humanities or Fine Arts classes may be re-quired. Compare your class schedules with the requirements at your trans-fer institution. If you have questions

about whether or not a class works for your pro-gram contact the admis-sions rep or advisor.

Pay attention to admis-

sion requirements for specific majors. Many students are ready to apply for acceptance into a spe-cific major at the time of transfer. Make sure these steps have been completed as well if necessary.

Pay attention to scholar-ships available to transfer students. Many schools offer scholarships specifi-cally for transfer students. This narrows down the pool of applicants and may be the edge you need to obtain a scholarship. With that in mind, it is important to maintain a good GPA at Kil-ian. Kilian is a smaller insti-tution that allows many to find their bearings in col-lege. Take advantage of the small classes, one on one help and the Student Success Center. Pay attention to Dead-

lines. Many schools have deadlines for admissions, registration and scholar-ships. Start thinking about the transfer process early. BE PREPARED. Admis-sions reps begin visiting students in the 8

th grade

and they still have 5 years before college. Give your-self plenty of time to com-plete all necessary steps. Showing up the day before the deadline for enrollment may cause your transfer to be delayed. Hold onto syllabi from all classes. Some schools

may not initially accept all transfer coursework. However, they may re-evaluate your transcripts if you request they do so. You may need the course syllabus or the course de-scription from the college catalog. If a class does not transfer in, follow up and see what steps you can take to get it looked at again.

If you come across

conflicting requirements, always follow those of the institution from which you plan to gradu-ate.

Make sure you com-

plete all necessary re-quirements at Kilian be-fore transferring on. If you have an unpaid bal-ance, credits will not be transferred to another insti-tution. Remember, you are still paying for your last semester at Kilian regard-less of whether or not you are planning to graduate from here. Don’t forget to complete those classes. It is easy to get ahead of yourself once you make plans to transfer. Don’t let that happen – it is a waste of your time and money and at some institutions could put your transfer in jeopardy.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER by Gene McDaniel

STOP and GO Last winter seemed to go on forever. If you remember, it was dark, cloudy, windy, slip-pery, snowy and cold. Around the end of February and the beginning of March just about everyone was dragging themselves around and ready to kill anyone that looked cross-eyed at them. The common topic of conversation tended to be about what we were going to do when it got warmer. So, here is some advice from your counselor. STOP IT (If you haven’t noticed, it’s now warmer.) GO (Go do all those things that you wanted to do last winter.) Here are some inexpensive suggestions to get out of the chair and enjoy life because rumor has it winter “will be back.”

Parks – The city and surrounding area have many great parks to enjoy. Most are free or at little cost and have fun stuff to do. (Picnic, volleyball, ride bikes, walk, playground equip-ment, watch or play a game or just relax.)

Swimming Pool or Beach – On the days when it is hot, nothing feels better than being in or by the water. Sit by the pool or lay in the sand and just enjoy yourself. Swim-ming is fun and great for you!

Community Events – If you look, there are several free events around the area that offer a wide variety of entertainment. (Hot Harley Nights, Hot Summer Nights, con-certs in the park, ethnic festivals, free outside movies) Check our website under “Calendar of Events” for a listing! Just beware of anything fried or on a stick!

Friends or Family – Some of the best times are when you make a call at the last min-ute and throw together an outside party with friends or family. A quick pot luck, some ice cream or a good watermelon can do the trick. (A few water balloons can spice things up, but you didn’t hear that from me!)

Basically, life’s too short, so stop sitting in that chair in front of the TV and go have some fun. Remember – winter is on its way!
