Going into our planning retreat, the board is preparing for creationmode, self-evaluation and lots ofpre-frontal lobe organizing. Witha few splashes in president-electChris Hecht’s watering hole andwho knows how many toastedmarshmallows in between!

This time last year, I was uber-excited about our 2010 planningretreat. I wanted our chapter tohave a mission. I felt strongly thatwithout an over-arching goal --even temporary-- we would viewour accomplishments as mixedresults, not distinguishable fromany other chapter’s, let alone from

recent manifestations of our own chapter. Not yet president, though, I wasn’t masterof the agenda. Having a modicum ofmodesty, I let my pet issue slide, and ourstar-studded new board pulled off a verysolid plan and successful 2011 without amission statement. That planning sessionbecame the foundation of our year’ssuccess: higher attendance, additionalleadership positions, and a reestablishedsponsorship program in 2011 – and becamethe template anew that has beenincorporated into our new proposed by-laws. I am again uber-excited, but my itchto establish a mission has resurfaced, revived by the strident voice of one of ourmembers.

Sustaining Member and Award winnerTom Brumfield of Siteworks came to ourJune board meeting with a few words tosay. He didn’t appreciate comments I’dmade at the Banquet about the reasonssome people become members of CLCA –some for awards that establish credibility

for their business, some for education, somefor insurance, and others for networkingand relationships with others whoappreciate and validate the trials andtriumphs of being a landscaper. While Tommay have been a little sensitive, he aptlyreminded us that the chapter’s membershipis made up of about 15 R1’s, 18 R2’s and100+ R3’s. That is, 22% of our membersbring in revenue over $500,000 per year –the R1’s and R2’s – while the majority –78% – gross less than $500,000 per year.Attending the board meeting by telephone,I didn’t quite hear Tom urging moreattention to our majority members, the R3’s.What I heard loud and clear though was,“What are we doing with this money?”

Seven category sponsors donated a totalof $7,000 this year. John Deere additionallydonated a $1,500 barbecue grill as well asall food at our Outdoor Kitchen event.Ewing additionally contributed anunknown amount to reserve our Tailgatespot at the A’s Game and then hosted theBarbecue complete with tables, seating, souvenirs, beverages and ambience. So whydid we ask sponsors for more money? What are we doing with it? This is whatTom Brumfield wanted to know.

This was exactly my question when Ifirst attended board meetings in 2009. Non-profits are charged with using duescollected to provide services to members orto the public. Several long-standing boardmembers have been loathe to spend thechapter’s cash resources, feeling theirfiduciary responsibility was to keep fromgoing over-budget on events, or over thecourse of the year. Debates run betweenthose who feel events should be freebecause they are underwritten by sponsors,

sponsors who feel underserved, speakerswho feel undervalued when attendance islow, and board members who feel theyworked hard to put together a useful event, then see a lot of costly food taken homebecause it’s easy for members to bail on freeevents. Caught betwixt and between thesescenarios, planners at our last retreatdecided to charge a nominal cost for events, charge a little more for walk-ins, ramp upfood and venue quality, and call everyoneto remind them of each event. The resulthas been higher attendance, a slight profiton every event, and speakers, sponsors, members and board members happy to seerooms full and 120+ in attendance at ourBaseball Game.

Our sponsors’ money helped make thedifference. We spent more money this year–on a banner, a new website, nicer venues, fees to a couple of speakers. Yet our cashbalance remains the same. We can do more!

So what should we do with that money?Tom Brumfield suggests an LED lightingseminar. Product knowledge and methodstraining are most essential to the majority ofmember contractors needing to grow theirbusiness. Yes, Tom, there is a lightingseminar, in October, at MembershipDirector Peter Rosen’s house. And, yes, wehave offered educational events – anoutdoor kitchen seminar, a marketingseminar, an accounting seminar and ahiring one, most in the slow season whenmembers have more time to come. Yet, wecan do more.

As we head into the woods ofGeyersville for another planning pow-wow,I am awfully excited about the prospects forputting the chapter’s money to work for us,by hiring a professional to help us grow ourservices to chapter members and the public. Our success in 2012 will be measured best ifwe first define our goals, and then allocateresources –both money and human assets—to them. Your thoughts are at a premiumnow. As non-board members, you can havea say in what goes into next year’s event

Saturday, June 18, was a warm one in theBay Area, perfect for an afternoon at theballpark. Over 100 A’s and Giants fans fromthe East Bay, North Coast, Bay Area andSacramento CLCA chapters joined togetherover food and drink at the Oaklandstadium for the 2011 Bay Bridge Series. Tokick off the game, Stacy Nord of EwingIrrigation brought out his legendary BBQtrailer and put on a killer tailgate. Ewingstaff showed up from near and far to help! The East Bay chapter’s very own LauraLeuer was instrumental in getting the eventorganized and Billy Montesclaros’enthusiasm infected everyone attending!

I’ve been a Giant’s fan since the day theymet the A’s in 1989, and I was excited tohang out with customers and coworkersalike garbed in their favorite team hats andshirts. Unfortunately for the Giants fans, the

A’s pulled out a 4-2 win, but a good timewas had by all regardless. Thanks to CLCAmembers and Partners for their support:
