JULY 2011 http://175.sirinc2.org/ Branch 175 Vol. 17 Issue 7 BIG SIR Sir Ron McClain Well, most of the holidays are over, now time for vacations. But as retired SIR, we are on vacation all the time. I hope Father’s Day was rewarding for those of you who have kids. I don't have any, so we adopted our niece. Then there was Veteran’s Day. A great day to remember all those who have given so much, some their all. Then there was July 4th. The day we remember our revolt from tierney. We have become the greatest country in the world because of our freedoms. It was great to be able to present The President’s Award to our Senior SIR, and such a large group (see above). Keep it up guys, the 95 and 100 year awards are next. The year is half over. Where has the time gone. Soon it will be Christmas and then a New Year. Be well and stay cool. LITTLE SIR Sir Marin Vallejo Remember the saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun?” Well July is here, the first half of the year has passed and it seems like only yesterday. Yes! I’m having fun, serving you the members of SIR 175, and most of all listening to your suggestions and concerns. I wish to thank you all for making the first half of 2011 a success. Please remember, ask a friend to join you for lunch and the following month, don’t forget to call him. Remember, retention is part of recruitment. BIG SIR Sir Ron McClain

Well, most of the holidays are over, now time for vacations.

    BRANCH 175 SIR

Picture at left taken by Mr. Howard Watkins who was visiting branch 175 at the June lunch and who is speaker at our July Lunch

Mr. Howard Watkins, Fresno’s Photo Laureate, is our July speaker. A retired attorney, Howard has taken over 250,000 photographs and has the largest collection of photographs of people, places, and events in the greater Fresno area over the past 35+ years. He has partnered with the Fresno Regional Foundation and CSUF”s Henry Madden Library to

donate his collection to be available to the public through the Library’s website. Come hear about this wonderful community project. Be early and enjoy viewing some of his “photo boards.”

Mr. Shawn Ferreria Senior Air Quality Specialist

San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control

    District

Ms Ruth Holmes, Outreach & Com-munications Representative, assisted Mr. Ferreria in giving handouts and helping SIR complete a “Healthy Air Pledge Card” and thereby being entered into a drawing for an electric lawn mower.

Mr. Ferreria makes a return visit to SIR 175. He was last with us in 2008. Shawn said, “The Valley’s a bowl and it traps allhe pol-lution during the Summer.” He promoted the District’s Healthy Living Campaign and told us, “All of us can step up and help clean the air,” and encouraged us to sign a Health Air Pledge Card. The banner to the right of Shawn in picture above contains seven con-crete things we can do the help (including car pooling and combin-ing trips we take).

New member, Sir Don Washer (on right in picture) being installed by Sir Dean Clark, Membership Chairman, at the June Lunch.

Membership by Sir Dean Clark This is going to be a great month! Paul Dehn will join us on a permanent basis. This makes 12 new members so far this year. Thank you Sir Tim Finley. Paul retired from the TSA Transportation Security Administration. Since he served as a Lead Screener, I imagine there are interesting stories he could tell. His hobbies are golf, travel, and gardening. Larry Hanville , guest of Sir Tom Lean will be joining us soon. He has been in the grocery business for years with Savemart. Another one who likes to golf, travel, and garden. We’ll have to share some stories with each other since I worked for Mayfair Market 10 years while going to college and warding off starvation when I started teaching. For all you emblem owners, this is the month again for “Proud to be a SIR” drawing. This is fun. So wear everything and win a chance for a FREE lunch. As I have said before, I have seven emblems(which means seven chances) but Sir Don Luft has been on a buying spree. I will be interesting to see how many emblems he comes up with. Don’t leave it up to just our newest members to invite guests. Carry our business cards and hand them out to people. You really will be doing a big favor inviting someone. It’s boring sitting around home when we have all these activities to share. Cock-a-doodle-do!

Your Branch 175 golfers fell on hard times when we played Branch 179 in our two challenge matches for the annual 175/179 trophy. We met at Airways on June 28 and were thoroughly trounced 6 to 2. At our second match on July 12th, we again come up short winning 3 of 12. The good news from the first tournament was that the team of Sirs Jim Scroggin and Gary Beacom and the team of Sirs Tom Lean and Mike Castle were victorious in their matches against 179. Sir Bob Dickson finished 4th in the individual tournament and Sir Rich Grigsby pocketed the cash for closest to the pin on the part 3, 15th hole. Branch 175 winners in the second tournament were Sirs Jerry Long, Tom Lean, and Charlie Pepper. We also played a two-man best ball tournament at the beautiful Belmont Country Club on July 7th. I’m sure everyone will be surprised to learn that Sirs Mike Castle and Tom Lean were the big winners from our Branch 175. I happened to have a front row seat to enjoy their show and they even helped me bring home a second place finish. I owe them both a “big orange” for putting up with me. Sirs Jerry Long and Bob Dickson also had a good day on the course and received a substantial financial award. Our next two tournaments will be on July 26th at Riverside, 0800 shotgun start and on August 9th at Fig Garden. At Fig Garden, we will have regular tee times starting at 0930. Call Sir Charlie Pepper at 433-0646 or Art Daly at 227-7618 to signup. Email [email protected] and/or [email protected] also will work nicely. Phil Mickelson passed along a great golf tip recently when he responded to this question from an anonymous reporter. Reporter, “You are spectacular, your name is synonymous with the game of golf. You really know your way around the course. What’s your secret?” Mickelson replied, “The holes are numbered.” See you on the tee.
