Angela Miller

G Not just to one’s self – but to the community as a whole. This is the

goal of Angela Miller, planning analyst at St. Mary Medical Center. Angela, also known as Angie around the Medical Center, is a rare example of one who took the loss of a loved one and turned it into an opportunity to give back to the community in a way that touches all walks of life, from the hungry and homeless to the family coping with cancer. She embodies the heart of one who truly understands the meaning of service. She is an outstanding person and employee. St. Mary Medical Center is pleased to recognize Angela Miller with the 2011 Values in Action Award for Service.

Volunteering services a pure gift.

Finding ways to give back to her community has always been a priority to she is doing something positive. But when her father died of cancer, this woman with a heart of gold mastered the art of volunteering and made it her passion. “Volunteering was always one of my favorite times. I get to hang out with these great ladies and make a difference,” she said. Angela is very passionate not only for serving the employees of St. Mary Medical

Center, but also for serving the community through various fundraisers and charities such as Karaoke 4 A Cure and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Today, through her efforts, the community’s needy are a little less hungry. Relay for Life in Hesperia has found a leader who raised more money than any other group in 2010. And St. Mary Medical Center patients experiencing pain have found comfort in the massage therapy program implemented by Angela. But that’s only the beginning.

Going the extra mile.

Angela established Karaoke 4 a Cure to help raise money for the Relay for Life. This live event invites community members to a purchase of opportunity drawing tickets goes toward a charitable cause. The success !fundraising format to another area of need in the community – stocking the pantries of local food charities. When she began organizing Karaoke 4 a Cure for Hunger she was concerned about how much food and money would be available to donate. But she wasn’t anxious for long after remembering that when she is serving, the results are in God's hands; that she should let go of the worry and hold fast to her faith. This event resulted in donations of more than $2,000 and more than a ton of food. Remembering that helping co-workers " !value of service for her co-ministers in the Medical Center and to the community. At work, she provides service by being an advocate for bringing access to tickets for sports events, family events such as Disney on Ice and Catalina trips, as well as on-site car washes and massage services for her fellow employees. She is always on the look out for more events and services to bring to fellow staff members. “As co-chair of the Employer of Choice team, Angie shows her leadership skills by providing guidance and compromise when needed. She always has the best interests of employees at the forefront of her decisions stewardship,” said Jennifer Gorsuch, an Employer of Choice team member and co-minister.

Taking the initiative, not just doing “your job.”

Angela says she’s grateful to have created a life of family, friends and coworkers who all share her passion of giving. For her it is now a way of life and she hopes it will become contagious to all who know her. “I see her juggle so many different things in the air at all times, but it never seems to frazzle her, she thrives on it,” said co-worker Mindy Ritchey. Whenever Angela meets with her supervisor, Randy Bevilacqua, Vice President of Communication, he waits for the next event, fundraiser or charity she has been processing ways to help. “Angela doesn’t wait to be asked to help. She sees a need and her mind begins to work through ways she and the Medical Center can help. This includes community needs like helping the local homeless or needy children receive Easter baskets, but also needs of our employees,” Randy said. She credits the team at St. Mary for allowing her the freedom and offering her the encouragement to serve her work and community in such a charitable way. “It is so rewarding. This way of life keeps you going with a bigger purpose,” Angela said.

Living the Core Values.

Community service isn’t about padding one’s resume, it isn’t about doing things so that one might be proud about it. It is a greater appreciation of the great lives of service that many people lead and deem to be “normal,” when it is extraordinary in its #!through her “normal” life and the community % “Angela is a wonderful ambassador for St. Mary Medical Center to the community as she exhibits our value of Service in the many events she contributes to and the charities she aids,” said John Perring-Mulligan, Vice President of Mission Integration for St. Mary. “It gives me great delight to see Angela and other employees extending our Mission outside of the Medical Center walls to the larger community.” It is with great honor that St. Mary Medical Center is recognizing Angela Miller with the Values in Action Award for Service for 2011.

I t was just under two years ago that Sr. Mary Jo Piccione, SP, walked into St. Mary Medical Center. With a loving

"goes on for days and a genuine concern for all, the lives of staff and patients have never been the same.&(what God wanted me to do with my life. And because my life has been blessed with trusting, loving parents, siblings and friends, I was able to respond to God’s call to ministry of service as a Sister of Providence for the past 45 years,” said Sr. Mary Jo, a chaplain at St. Mary and recipient of the 2011 Values in Action Award for Dignity.

Being sensitive; imagining they are on the receiving end;

putting themselves in another's place.

As a chaplain, Sr. Mary Jo gets the opportunity to touch lives throughout the Medical Center. She responds to the needs of the families and patients, treating them with dignity, respect and affection. She is humbled daily by her work. Dr. Jean Donovan, Ph.D., Director of Mission Services and Spiritual Care, shared how Sr. Mary Jo often gets involved in all the ordinary details. Recently a death in the Emergency Department left a family member too upset to drive home. Sr. Mary Jo made sure to notify hospital staff and drove the family member home herself, and this is not families this way. She takes them to eat to make sure they are nourished during their troubled times. She serves with a deep spirituality and sense of service and self “Her life is her ministry. From the moment she gets up in the morning until she goes to bed at night she serves the St. Mary community,” said Jean.

Trying to have every encounter be a “sacred encounter.”

To Sr. Mary Jo service to others is her life and one she feels continually blessed to live. “The healing part of my life has always been a sacred encounter. When you’re with someone at a birth, they remember you. When you’re with someone at a death, they

remember you. These experiences connect you with families forever. This is humbling,” she said. Her colleagues also feel blessed and richer in life for knowing her.&!She is an individual who sees the best in everyone she encounters. In challenging times, Sr. Mary Jo seems to always know how to revitalize your spirit and help you see the good in every situation. She is the light in my life, and I am blessed to know her,” said Winna Asuming, Operations Manager of the Pharmacy. Rosa Ortega, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services, remembers what she calls “a Sacred Encounter of the Sr. Mary Jo kind.” Rosa recalls a particularly challenging day when she was struggling )with many uncertainties and she was feeling apprehensive about a decision she had to make.&*(morning, I found a small prayer on my chair that was left by Sr. Mary Jo at the precise moment I needed it. That prayer was my (message and felt instant peace. There is no doubt that Sr. Mary Jo’s presence is a gift, and we are truly blessed to have her,” Rosa said.

Anticipating what people need before they have to ask.

Sr. Mary Jo has been a Sister of Providence from Indiana for 45 years. She believes we are all connected in God’s loving Providence. She has spent those years working with cancer patients, the sick, elderly and homeless. Through her tenderness, her time and comforting words, she offers them insight to the love of God. “People really just want to come and sit and talk sometimes. For them to allow you to be a part of their pain is a real privilege,” Sr. Mary Jo said. “I’ve witnessed her advocating for nurses on what is the right thing to do,” said Rosa. Sr. Mary Jo admits that running into tragedy is not easy, but she recognizes it’s a part of life. Relating to a plethora of needs has become second nature to her, and she cherishes each experience as though it were the most important moment in her life. Be it a

patient who was a victim of violence, drug addiction or deep loss, her heart is open and ready to offer comfort and emotional healing. “Cancer, automobile accidents, crisis situations are experiences that have also been a part of my life and those of my family, friends and community, so I can identify with their pain,” Sr. Mary Jo said. She thrives in her role as chaplain at St. Mary Medical Center and looks forward to continuing to touch lives through the grace of God. “Every little bend in the road brings you to a new journey. I receive this reward in the (life and dignity to me. You can’t go wrong when you encounter God’s loving Providence in everyone you meet,” she said.

Living the core values.

#+3encounters and constant acts of tender thoughtfulness make her a shining example of faithful service with poise. “Sr. Mary Jo’s gentle presence and caring demeanor provides the foundation for patients to experience someone who fully accepts them as a child of God," said John Perring-Mulligan, Vice President of Mission Integration. “Because her values are so well integrated into her life, she can enter People rise to the occasion when their dignity is fully accepted.” It is with great pride and honor we recognize Sr. Mary Jo Piccione, SP, with the Values in Action Award for Dignity for 2011.

T hey call him “Dr. MacGyver,” because Dr. Mel Cherne is versatile in everything he does.

With his vast experience and knowledge as a radiologist, he is always able to overcome obstacles to meet patients’ needs. And according to his colleagues, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Dr. Cherne is the recipient of the 2011 Values in Action Award for Justice.

Contributes to a work environment that supports the integrity of our mission,

values and vision with a shared sense of purpose.

7 %who served as a missionary doctor, it is no wonder Dr. Cherne has the quality of Justice instilled in him. Those who work closest to him gush about the many ways he goes the extra mile for his patients. He sets the standard for patient care in his department. His colleagues say he teaches through example. He takes an active interest in his patients. He treats them on a level based on care and compassion.Justice, empathy, dignity are all words used to describe him. But Dr. Cherne is unclear what all the fuss is about.

“I don’t know what that means. I simply take care of patients the way I would want to be taken care of,” he said. “The most rewarding thing is to help. When someone’s sick, care moves to the front of the priority list. Help them. Make them comfortable. That’s what I like to do.” He takes those qualities, so engrained in his character and passes them onto his co-workers, friends and family. Brian Hennebry, Director of Imaging Services, sees it in the way he treats every member of the care team – physician, technician and patient – as an equal. “He’s very well respected in that manner because he promotes input from every aspect of the team,” Brian said.

Listens and seeks to understand and respect all;

attends to the needs of people who are vulnerable and in

need.

Those in his department give one example after another on how his character sets the standard for patient care. He makes time to just sit and talk with a patient in order to make the patient feel comfortable and at ease. One colleague went so far as to say, “Each and every patient he encounters is treated as though they are the most important person in the world.” He takes his time, treats each patient as an individual and shows them respect. He never judges or jumps to conclusions while making sure the patient receives the treatment they need. The respect he has earned in his department as well as by his patients cannot be measured. He also remembers things about his patients. One time he remembered having a conversation with a patient about a favorite place to visit. The patient was nervous, so he started talking to the patient about this favorite place. It relaxed the patient and put him at ease releasing stress from the procedure. “I have patients call me all the time commenting on how much they appreciate

Dr. Cherne. They tell me how nice he is and how comfortable he made them feel. They tell me how he treated them like they were important and not just another number or payday,” one colleague wrote in Dr. Cherne’s nomination for the award. There have been numerous times in which Dr. Cherne has gone out of his way to treat those in need. For example, there was one patient whose portable catheter was twisted in surgery and the surgeon 89!was in extreme pain. Dr. Cherne had him come in countless times just to have it checked and to make sure the patient remained comfortable. He also called the patient to check on him. There have been numerous times when he will just sit and talk with a patient, sometimes about things not even medically related to their case, helping to make them feel comfortable and at ease. He will sit and joke with patients to help them relax. Each and every patient he encounters is treated as though he/she is the most important person in the world. Humbled by this honor, Dr. Cherne said it’s not about him, but the entire staff. “Everyone I work with has their good parts. They are more than just co-workers. It’s not an easy job. We work long hours and not everyone you are trying to help wants to be helped. It’s a real team effort,” he said.

Living the core values.

Building positive, healthy relationships, be it with a patient, their family or staff, is a main priority for Dr. Cherne. His work and personal ethics make him a revered staff % “Dr. Cherne is a wonderful clinician not just in the quality of care he provides but in his focus to ensure each patient and co-worker is treated with respect,” said John Perring-Mulligan, Vice President of Mission Integration. He is a shining example of Justice to all who are fortunate enough to meet him. St. Mary Medical Center is pleased to recognize Dr. Mel Cherne with the Values in Action Award for Justice for 2011.

R "a strong foundation of faith and consideration, it’s no wonder Edwin

Beltran has dedicated his life to treating others with care, respect and affection. :< "="registered nurse in St. Mary Medical Center’s Critical Care Unit, says he wouldn‘t change a thing. The core principles taught to him through his church and faith-based home are what make him the man he is today. He fully credits his father and church for his nurturing spirit. “He was an awesome role model,” Edwin said of his father. “All those values come back to you. I see nursing as a mission, an opportunity to share what I was given.” He says he gets the chance to meet people %) "new rewards, and new relationships – butalways the same purpose – an opportunity to pass along the values of love, kindness and empathy to those he comes in contact with.Edwin is the 2011 recipient of the Values in Action Award for Hospitality.

Creating a spirit of presence in which everyone relates and is available and attentive to the

needs of one another.

His unrelenting passion to serve others the way he would want to be treated is something he deems as a gift, a privilege. He enjoys while offering top shelf care to his patients. Each day he is allowed to do this he counts as a blessing. “At the end of the day, things are just things. But what’s valuable are our family, our children, our spiritual connection. For me it’s like, ‘Yeah! I get another day to share something with somebody!’” Edwin said. He takes his experiences and uses them to help others and says each life lesson makes it a little easier for him to identify with those in need. “When someone is ill they don’t really care about material stuff. They just don’t want to be alone or in pain. The things that are really important come to life. Many times it’s my privilege to pray with them. (and their family,” Edwin said.

Creating a welcoming spirit in which everyone is recognized

as a person with dignity.

As a nurse, Edwin embraces the opportunity to reach out and care for his patients while educating them to live as healthy as possible. “My father told me, ‘Men ?< %! "3tell you, it’s true,” he said. One way he helps patients sounds easy, but takes time and patience to master – listening. “People who are sick always want to tell you what’s wrong with them. They just have a hard time putting it into words,” he said. His goal is to help them understand and then teach them how to move forward in changing an unhealthy habit or lifestyle. &*!% their way of life. If you go to a different country you would have no idea what to order in a restaurant. You’d have to develop a taste for that culture’s food. It’s the same principle when changing your way of life after you’re sick,” Edwin said.

Greeting others with a smile, making eye contact, extending

a few kind words.

Edwin is the perfect example of hospitality! Through simple gestures of kindness he touches lives in a simple, yet profound way. He has compassion and empathy toward all he comes in contact with. One day, a fellow co-worker came into work feeling down but not showing it. Edwin must have sensed something and asked the co-worker, "How's it going?" and patted him on the shoulder. This simple gesture made the co-worker feel so much better that he had come to work. His co-workers applaud his spirit of hospitality and look up to him as an example of what being hospitable truly looks like. “Edwin is a very spiritual person. He is always "He has always been a person I could look up to. He has been a perfect example of the core values of St. Joseph Health System. He is always upbeat in such a way that it is a pleasure to come to work,” read one Values in Action nomination from a co-worker.

Edwin and his wife, Diane, are both nurses. Their nurturing characters must be contagious as they have children who are now nurses, some with spouses who are also nurses. This great family tradition will surely continue to touch the lives of many across the country. Edwin feels honored to work with the staff at St. Mary Medical Center and says it is the Medical Center as a team that deserves honors. “It’s really an awesome place to be,” he said.

Living the core values.

“When the Brothers of St. John of God began ministering at St. Mary Medical Center they brought with them the value of Hospitality. Now years later we see their legacy carry on in the wonderful work of people like Edwin. His kind words and compassionate care make patients, visitors and co-workers feel welcomed and comfortable,” said John Perring-Mulligan, Vice President of Mission Integration.= !Q talk with his patients. This allows him to gain a better understanding of their emotional and physical health. He makes a point to importance of better health choices in life. He does so, always with a smile on his face and genuine compassion in his voice. This is why St. Mary Medical Center is pleased to recognize Edwin Beltran with the Values in Action Award for Hospitality for 2011.

HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS

Y ou did it! You successfully implemented the ClinDoc, eMAR and BMV modules. After

months of preparation, the system went live on June 7 This implementation revolutionizes the way St. Mary will care for patients by moving away from a paper based environment to an integrated health information system that automates many manual functions and eliminates redundancy. It also lays the foundation for other clinical systems that will create a fully functional Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to help us achieve Perfect Care for our patients. Our gratitude goes to the Design for Perfect Care Team and the Ambassadors. They were instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition by building the system, testing it, helping to train employees and providing 24/7 support during go-live. The extra support from our IT staff was greatly appreciated. Thank you for your dedication and positive attitude in tackling the challenges of adapting to a new way of working. Your hard work will make a difference in our patients’ lives.

Physical Therapist, Denise Matthias, inputs her notes in the new ClinDoc system.
