June nineteenth marks the 54th anniversary of the founding of the Waukegan Sail & Power Squadron. Coincidentally, June 19 is also Fathers Day. That got me thinking about the foundering fathers of our squadron and the legacy they left. On 19 June 1957, a total of forty-three members, some from Evanston (now Racine), Kenosha and Milwaukee squadrons, joined together to form our squadron with the purpose of providing quality boater education. Within just a few years, 1961, some members left to form the Skokie Valley Squadron; then in 1962 Chain-o-Lakes & Rockford were created from the ranks of the fledgling Waukegan Squadron. Since 1957 much has changed in the boating world, we've gone from wooden boats to fiberglass, from dead reckoning and paper charts to an electronic world of GPS & chart plotters. One thing hasn't changed, the power squadron tradition of providing the best boater educational programs available anywhere. That was the goal in 1957 and it is still our goal today. Much of our class material has been developed over the years by those that came before us. Public Classes - The winter session will offer to all the ABC (America’s Boating Course) began 27 January at CLC (College of Lake County); presented by Tom Parkinson & Tenney Ford. Congratulations to the 10 students that passed thus being provided six months free USPS membership. The summer session will offer another ABC commencing 9 June at CLC to obtain a larger number of students and will be instructed by Tom Parkinson & Tenney Ford. As an incentive and to promote more members; every student who passes the ABC exam will be given 6 months FREE membership . Take advantage of this great promotional offer. Member Classes Marine Electrical systems instructed by Rex Miller began 9 February and four students enrolled; held at Rex’s home. Congratulations to the students that passed the six class sessions plus closed book final exam 23 March. Junior Navigation, with instructor Paul M. Green SN and proctor Keith Baldwin SN began 7 March at Brunswick Corp. in Lake Forest, with nine students enrolled. The course includes eleven class sessions plus an open book final exam. Seven students will be doing their sighting in Waukegan. Piloting, with instructor Tom Parkinson and proctor Tenney Ford III, began 7 April on Thursdays at Brunswick Corp., Lake Forest with ten class sessions plus Open Book Final Exam. Fourteen students enrolled and will be taking the exam in June. Seamanship with instructor Betti Mors is moved to December 2011. Engine Maintenance, instructor Jeff Geltz, has been moved to the spring 2012. Seminars The Waukegan Yacht Club seminar for 5 April was Mariner’s Compass presented by Tenney Ford III and assisted by Tom Parkinson with a head count of about 20. New Members were signed up and 4 more students signed up for the Piloting Class. WYC will hold WSPS free seminars open to the public every first Tuesday of every month till May. The last winter seminar, held at WYC on 3 May was Rules of the Road presented by Tenney Ford III and assisted by Tom Parkinson with a head count of twelve. Larsen marina hosted two seminars on 7 May. Onboard Marine Weather Forecast presented by George and assisted by Tom with a head count of twelve. 90% of the materials were sold in addition to three attendees eager to sign up as new members. Marine Radar was presented by Rex and assisted by Tom with a head count of nine, five kits were sold. I am very happy to announce Tom Parkinson is organizing and coordinating the seminar classes and plans to expand it to Saturdays in Waukegan thru the summer season for the purpose of educating new boaters or thinking of being boaters. This should present a nice opportunity for signing up new members. Other Business I encourage all to plunge into the upcoming classes including on-the-water boating education that is being squared out by USPS, Brunswick & Skipper Bud’s. I am meeting with Capt. Kevin and Capt. Bob of Skipper Bud’s to set out a plan on how to harmonize both goals. Let’s hope it will take effect this season or by the latest next boating season. The goal is for the USPS to do the class room instruction and Skipper Bud’s Captains do the on the water course on their Boats. In this way Skipper Bud’s Captains time can be freed up towards selling more boats. Continued two pages down….

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER Lt/C SEAN SULLIVAN

Well folks we bought, we sold, and by the math of some we survived the rapture. The 2011 Used Equipment Sale was a good time. The weather seemed to have kept some boaters away from the marina. Those who showed seem particularly interested in the flare shoot and all spent some time under the harbor house tent with us. Ok, maybe the rain had a little something to do with tent time, but everyone had fun. On to the next event: as I am sure you have heard by now, the Great Lakes Memorial Day celebration has been canceled. We hope to see an invitation to next year’s event. Fortunately, our friends at the Waukegan Yacht Club have invited us to join them Sunday 29 May at 1pm. Please see their web site for details www.wyclub.com and a few pages down in this newsletter. I hope to see you there. As we move quickly into June, let us not forget the 12 June Pancake Breakfast and for us sailors there are two major races. 18 June brings The Chicago to Waukegan Race and July 1st Queen’s Cup race. These events bring us into the heart of a season. 50 and raining will give way to 70 and sunny. June is wonderful and always flies by. So, make sure to make time to attend one of these events. Yes, time is on the move. July is five weeks away! This is our month to cruise. The 8th brings Milwaukee, the 15th is the Mac week, and July 30th is our First Annual Island Times Beach Party at Alford Beach Kenosha, WI. If you have ever wanted to bring your boat to a nice warm beach, drop anchor and meet up with friends; this is the event for you. Please take the time to read my upcoming email with the details of this event. We have a lot to look forward to this season. Make your plans now and let’s get out there and enjoy our time … On the Water.

Cruising Lake Michigan Hopefully the recent violent crummy weather will move on, allowing some quality time for cruising. So, here are some ideas that you may want to consider as you make your plans. Please forgive me if I skipped your favorites. Charlevoix-Harbor Springs-Leland These are the “crown jewels” of the lake. Charlevoix and Leland were both rebuilt recently, with more and new floating docks; you could spend your entire vacation time in these magnificent ports. Anchor at So. Manitou Island and visit the oldest and largest white cedars in the world and climb the 1971 lighthouse. Fayette-Egg Harbor-Fish Creek-Washington Island Fayette is the most unusual harbor on the lake, with its 19th century ore factory and village restoration. Fish Creek is a port you could easily spend a week. Egg Harbor has a new marina. Anchor in the bay north of Peninsula State Park, hike and play golf then dinghy to Sister Bay for dinner at Johnson’s (with goats on the sod roof). Tie up at Shipyard Marina in Detroit Harbor on Washington Island, visit Schoolhouse Beach (all stones), ferry to Rock Island for some challenging hiking. There’s a culinary school near the marina to sample some of their lessons. Beaver Island Once the only sovereign (non-Native American) government within US borders, governed by Mormon King James Strang, this port is worth a stop to explore its quirky history. There’s also a newer marina, nice bike paths and pretty beaches on the west coast. Frankfort Old favorite Jacobsen’s marina has a new owner, with

a swimming pool and lounge. The town still has good restaurants, a convenient grocery store, a bakery, shopping and a great beach. Ludington and Pentwater We give ports with good ice cream shops extra credit. Since House of Flavors has stores in both of these ports they get high marks, especially since they are also have plenty of other reasons. Both offer good shopping and restaurants (Pentwater has live music), great beaches but Pentwater is more “homey”. Grand Haven and Holland This port also has new docks, albeit fixed. They also continue to play the lighted “Dancing Waters” show backed by music nightly. Eldean Shipyard is the marina of choice, although far from the town of Holland. Saugatuck and South Haven Saugatuck is still one of the best ports, with plenty of shops and good restaurants and taverns. Visit the Keewatin railroad ferry museum, or at least the “Red Dock”, the bar next door. South Haven has the feel of its commercial fishing village heritage, with the addition of more good restaurants and a great beach. These two are the best bets for the southeast corner of the lake. Manitowoc – Sheboygan-Port Washington The best maritime museum in the Great Lakes is in Manitowoc, but not much else. Sheboygan offers a good marina, and Stefano’s, a great Italian restaurant. Port Washington has a new marina, and the Port Hotel as well as other good restaurants. The other ports are close to all of us, so I’ll skip them. As good as they are, there too close to home! Enjoy your summer. BobBobBobBob
