JUly’s HealtH observance is Uv protection Too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation without protection may cause conditions that can lead to vision loss, including cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and growths, including cancer. That’s over the long term, but even a day without protection is harmful. Like skin, the eye surface can burn. The solutions: sport sunglasses and don a wide-brimmed hat. Don’t be fooled by cloudy days either. The invisible rays are just as present then. When it comes to sunglasses, the lens color and price aren’t an issue. The ability to block UV light doesn’t depend on the darkness of the lens. Many $10 sunglasses provide just as much protec-tion — or sometimes even more — than a $100 pair. Look for glasses that block 99% to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B rays. You may even want to go for the wrap-around style so the rays can’t enter from the sides.

Files for veterans and next-of-kinMilitary personnel records can be used for proving military service or as a valuable tool in genealogical research. Most veterans and their next-of-kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) and other military and medical records several ways. For veterans service records from WWI to present you may use the eVetRecs online system or download form SF-180 to mail or fax your request to the National Military Personnel Record Center (NPRC).

The NPRC eVetRecs system creates a customized order form to request information from your, or your relative’s, military personnel records. You may use this system if you are:

• A military veteran or• Next of kin of a deceased former member of the military. The next of kin can be any of the following:

• Surviving spouse that has not remarried• Father or mother• Son or daughter• Sister or brother

Your request must contain certain basis information for the center to locate your service records. This information includes:

• The veteran’s complete name used while in service• Service number• Social security number• Branch of service• Dates of service• Date and place of birth (if the service number is not known)

More online under the “Retired Activities” tab at http://mccs-sc.comMCCS Retired Activities on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BeaufortRAO

• If you suspect your records may have been involved in the 1973 fire, also include:

• Place of discharge• Last unit of assignment• Place of entry into the service, if known

All requests must be signed and dated by the veteran or next-of-kin. If you are the next of kin of a deceased veteran, you must provide proof of death such as a copy of death certificate, letter from funeral home, or published obituary.

You can also mail or fax a signed and dated SF-180 records request to the NPRC. Most, but not all records, are stored at the NPRC. Be sure to use the address specified by the instructions on the form.

behavioral HealthSummer is upon us, and with that comes a mul-titude of great activities that Beaufort has to offer-- from water activities, to festivals, to the highly-celebrated Independence Day fireworks shows. With all this fun in the sun, it’s easy to want to “throw a few back,” but there are a few basic rules for safe summer fun.

High-risk alcohol usage poses a myriad of dan-gers, particularly in this summer heat. While outside it’s important to remain hydrated, but some drinks, including alcoholic beverages, ac-tually increase the likelihood of dehydration. Al-cohol blocks the production of a hormone nec-

essary for water reabsorption. As a result, just a few ounces of alcohol can cause a person to excrete over a quart of urine. If concerned about dehydration, increase the intake of other bever-ages such as juice or water and avoid caffein-ated beverages which have the same diuretic effect as alcohol.

According to the CDC, 70% of water-related fatalities involve alcohol. Alcohol impairs co-ordination and balance, and the sun and heat intensify this impairment which can lead to accidental drowning. Additionally, one in five boating deaths was also attributed to alcohol usage. While going out to the sandbar may be fun, it is important to remember that in the state of South Carolina it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol. If you’re drinking, stay out of the water or close to shore. The impairments caused by alcohol could make it difficult to react properly if caught in a rip-tide or other dangerous situation.

Summer is all about having fun, relaxing, and enjoying time with family and friends. Part of keeping summer safe and enjoyable for all is making low-risk choices:

(1) Drink no more than 1 standard drink per hour and no more than 4 on any given day for men and 3 on any given day for women. A stan-dard drink is equal to one 12 oz beer, a 5 oz glass of wine, or a 1.5 oz shot. (2) Keep hydrated with juice and water, and nev-er drink on an empty stomach.(3) Remember that it’s okay to abstain.

back to schoolFall is traditionally the time to go back to school. To prepare, now is the time to visit the Education Office at your installation if you are not familiar with the military tuition assistance process or if you want help choosing a school or program. (Shop around! There are six on base reps, visiting reps, and over a thousand U.S. schools who offer programs online! You don’t buy the first pair of shoes you see, why would you enter the first college you see?)

military tuition assistanceActive duty service members generally qualify for $4,500 worth of military tuition assistance (TA) every fiscal year. If you have an educational goal and are not working toward it, you may be throwing away thousands

of dollars every year. TA can pay up to $250 per semester hour for technical/vocational certificates and associates through graduate degrees. For more details, please call or come by your local education office: MCAS Education Office: Rm 211, Bldg. 596/tel. 228-7484/7421; MCRD/ERR Education Office: Rm 42, Bldg. 923/tel. 228-3889/2152.

monies available to military community membersWe want all members of our military community to have the most opportunities possible to reach their educational goals. Many military spouses can access a Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) to go to one of hundreds, possibly thousands, of educational programs. A MyCAA fact sheet can be found on our website, www.mccssc.com/lifelong, keyword “MyCAA”. MyCAA is available through Military One Source via 1.800.342.9647 or militaryonesource.mil/.

Scholarships and financial aid are often key to your being able to take advantage of available schooling. Your second internet stop, after www.fafsa.gov, should be www.mcsfex.net. This website is the Military Community Scholarship and Financial Aid Explorer, and it does not require any of your personal or contact information for you to search through thousands of scholarships. MCSFEX is user friendly, can be browsed or searched by degree level, field of study, scholarship type and many more.

sad story - don’t let it Happen to youA Marine was in the education office the other day; he is preparing to get out of the Marine Corps in a couple months. He has been an electrician for the Marine Corps and wants to be an electrician in the civilian community. If he had done the USMAP Apprenticeship Program while active duty (can take one to 3+ years), he would have been ready to start work in a well-paid position. Instead, he will have to start at the bottom rung, and will likely need to go to a school and take numerous tests to gain credentials he could have had from the Uniform Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP).

Military careers can last 4 years or over 30 years; then most people look for a civilian career. USMAP doesn’t require additional training or work, but it does require the active duty time. USMAP gives the Active Duty Military Member a Certificate of Journeyman Status from the Department of Labor. That would help you get that job – possibly at higher pay – when you are ready to transition. Don’t wait until your last few months in service to prepare for your future. For more information, go to https://usmap.cnet.navy.mil/ or contact your local Education Services Office by calling MCAS Beaufort at 228-7484 and MCRD/ERR Parris Island at 228-2152.

test proctoringMembers of our Military Community often need to have tests proctored for college courses, industry requirements and more. If you are a member of the local military community and need to take a proctored test, contact our test examiners to determine if our free services are right for you. In addition to proctoring college courses, we have many active duty military-only tests and can guide you to CLEP, DSST, SAT, ACT test prep sites, etc. For more information, call your closest Education Office: MCAS Beaufort (843) 228-7474 & MCRD/ERR Parris Island (843) 228-2086.
