THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Reaching the Families of the Concho Valley with the Transforming Love of Jesus Christ!

“God sets the lonely in families…” Psalm 68:6

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

During the June 1st -3rd Leadership Retreat and Weekend, Fr. Tom Herrick our facilitator mentioned that one of the outstanding characteristics of Good Shepherd is our identity as a “Loving Family.” He teased out our understanding of this identity with probing ques-tions. What became clearer to us is that this is one of the chief and desired characteristics that we share.

Guests who worship with us often tell us how friendly and ac-cepting we are of them. New members are included at every level of ministry and service because they are genuinely made to “feel at home.” We see a number of folks: widows, students, military person-nel and others whom God has placed in His family here for their sup-port and encouragement. Our Vision and Mission is to build on that foundation and widen the number and makeup of families incorpo-rated into our church’s life.

Over the next year, the Church Health Team and the Vestry will be exploring ways to do just that. Some of the suggestions made so far are included in this issue of the Agnus Dei. We look for your prayerful input and involvement in striving to live into our Vision and extend our Mission. I pray that each and all of us will continue to wel-come all whom the Lord directs our way as we seek to Reach the families of the Concho Valley with the Transforming Love of Jesus Christ!

THE SHAPE OF OUR WORSHIP SERVICE

Part Three

Glory to God Having acknowledged God’s presence and holiness in the Processional Hymn, and our sinful unworthiness to be in His presence in the Prayer for the Holy Spirit’s illumination, Jesus’ words re-mind us of our high calling to love God with all that we are, and our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. All we can say is “Lord, have mercy upon us.”

Recognizing our sinful state, our attention is focused on Jesus. We are assured of God’s mercy, recalling and singing the angels’ hymn at the birth of the Christ child: “Glory to God in High-est and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.” (Luke 2:14 NIV) God is merciful indeed, condescending to be born, live and die among us as the God-Man. God reveals Himself once and for all to mankind in the person of His one and only begotten Son. Our voices respond to this incompa-rable gift with praise and thanksgiving for the Savior.

During the Reformation of the 1500’s, “The Gloria” was limited by some of the reformers into the shorter form we are familiar with at the end of praying the Psalms, or in times of private prayer. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer moved The Gloria intact, to be sung immediately after the Thanksgiv-ing following the reception of the Holy Communion. If the greatest expression of God’s mercy was in becoming Incarnate as Man, then certainly the second greatest sign of His mercy is that He gives Himself to us in the Body and Blood of Christ. We are reminded that “we are incorporate in the Mys-tical Body of Thy Son” and assured of His undying love and the outworking of His will in our lives until the day when we see Jesus face to face.

From the earliest days of the Church’s life and ministry, she has been overwhelmed by the incomparable gift of our Lord Jesus Christ. And in light of the coming of the Word made flesh, we draw near with expectant minds and pliable wills to hear the unfolding of God’s purpose and plan for us contained in His Word written.

The theme of the day’s Scripture lessons is expressed in prayer, The Collect of the Day. We ask the Lord to grant that the truth we are about to hear will find a home is our hearts and ex-pression in our lives and ministries.

Thursday's Intercessors

Each Thursday morning those committed to prayer for the needs of church members and non-members alike, gather in the chapel from 9:30-11:00 AM. Those wishing to participate as an intercessor, or

who would like to be prayed for, come by the chapel.

All are welcome.

Summer Schedule While you are away, look for an Anglican church in which to

worship. You may find them on the web at

http:www.//anglicanchurch.net/?/main/locator/us,

and be sure to share with them our blessings and greet-

ings. Its always a great encouragement to our brothers

and sisters. Our schedule will remain unchanged for the

summer, and look forward to welcoming guests as well.

Family Sunday School Class During the Leadership retreat our ministry for and to families surfaced as a priority and the desire to reach out and support all families in their life in Christ became obvious. To that end we are prayerfully considering a Family Sunday School class which would welcome parents, grandparents and other care givers to learn and experience a pre-determined Scripture Lesson each week. Please pray for guidance as we consider this.

Diocese of the Southwest Synod met June 1-2 at Christ the King, Albuquerque, NM. The Canons for the Diocese were dis-cussed, and the milestones and failures of the past year were noted. New Church was admitted into the fellowship of the Diocese, St Philip the Evangelist, Cortez, NM. Welcome brothers and sisters in Christ! as we continue to reach West Texas and New Mexico with the Transforming Love of Jesus Christ!

Good Shepherd's Vestry met June 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the library at the church. All members of the vestry were present except Rusty Lieber. The meeting opened with Evening Prayer. The May minutes were approved and the Financial Secretary's Report was reviewed and approved. Martha Sue Oliver read thank you notes from Meals for the Elderly and Trinity Seminary. David Harrison, Senior Warden advised that there would be a meeting of the Employee Handbook Committee Thursday. Rodney Brown, Junior Warden reported that he had received only one estimate for beautifying the garth but was expecting more bids soon. He still has other maintenance issues pend-ing and is working on them. Teddye Read, Communications, reported that she will work with Fr. Stan to develop a trifold and/or other informational handouts using the information gleaned from the Leadership weekend. Nan Barber, Christian Formation, reported that she has distributed flyers to daycare centers in an effort to find qualified nursery workers. Jean Yarbrough, Fellowship, reported that Jeannettee Anaya and Nan Holloway will attend the Daughters of the Holy Cross conference in Septem-ber. She also reported that Leslie Brown is heading up a committee for the 4th of July celebration in the back parking lot. Father Stan updated the vestry on the lawsuit, re-ported on the leadership weekend and on the Anglican Provincial Assembly and ad-vised that the dates of his vacation were being altered somewhat. The meeting closed in prayer for those grieving, sick, and in need. Respectfully submitted, Billie Ruth Hodges

A full copy of the vestry minutes is on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

Independence Day Celebration

Wednesday, July 4th we will celebrate our Independence from Great Britain with an evening of

activities. A Service of Thanksgiving for our Liberty will begin at 7:00 PM in the church with the

celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We will read the Declaration of Independence at the service,

and if you would like to read a line or two, please notify Fr. Stan. Afterwards, we gather in the

Parish Hall for an Ice Cream and Sweet Treat Social. Bring a friend or more along with Ice

Cream, sweat treats, and soft drinks to share. Bring your singing voices as well! Then, we will

gather in the rear parking lot for the best view in San Angelo of fireworks from ASU Stadium and

Lake Nasworthy. Bring some lawn and/or folding chairs along for you and our guests. PARKING:

Please park in the FRONT LOT of the church for the evening’s events. Contact Leslie Brown

(Coordinator) to assist with the celebration (1-972-922-4205).

The Order of the

Daughters of the Holy Cross The Shepherd’s Daughter Chapter ~ Congratulations to Jeannette Anaya (President) and Ruth Ann

Wallace (Vice President) who were elected in June to serve a three year term. Daughters Jeannette and Nan Holloway will participate

in the Daughter’s of the Holy Cross Assembly in September near Jack-sonville, Florida. The Vision of the

Daughters is to gather Anglican women and girls into a nurturing

and empowering community called to be servants of Jesus as He

unites and builds up His Body, the Church. Daughters commit their lives to the work and service of the Lord Jesus. They pray daily for our Church, its clergy, the Order and others in need. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and equipped with the powerful sword of truth as contained in the Holy Bible, they reach out to those who do not know Jesus to share His message of salvation through word and deed. They wear the Cross of the Order as a symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice and our need for

Him to be Lord of our lives. In community with their sisters, they are strengthened and encouraged to keep their fourfold life-long Vow of Prayer, Service, Study and Evangelism. For more information on the Order, or the local chapter at Good Shepherd, contact Jeannette at (325) 450-2258, or Ruth Ann at (325) 658-6620, or any Daughter. You will know them by their cheerful and faithful service

as well as the Cross pictured above which they wear continually. Thank you Daughters for your ministry on our behalf!

Genesis: Bible Study The Pastor’s Bible Study on Wednesday at 7:15 PM is studying the

Book Of Genesis. The study of God’s Word, and the several oppor-

tunities offered by the church to do so, are a necessary and en-

couraging dimension of every Christian’s formation. Every member

of the church is invited to make the study of Scripture in small

groups a priority.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I was curious to look at the statistics from the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB), released last May and reported on in the Standard Times recently. This group has been tracking reli-gious membership in the United States since 1952. So, I looked at Tom Green County data to see what our home turf looks like. In the past 10 years, the Latter Day Saints grew more than any other religious group in our county, adding 848 adherents for a 79.7% increase. The Roman Catholic Church was next in growth, add-ing 399 new members, increasing 2.6% in membership. The Episcopal Church USA lost 176 members in Tom Green County between 2000 and 2010, but the Anglican Church showed 0 members in our county survey data. Puzzled, I looked at another chart on the overall numbers for church membership and found that, al-though we left the Episcopal Church, we were statistically lumped with the Episcopal Church membership for a total of 516 Episcopal/Anglican members in Tom Green County. Tom Green County grew 6% between 2000 and 2010 to 110,224. “Religious adherents” as listed in the survey make up 60.3% of our county population (that figure is 49% in the U.S. overall).

I am reminded of Jesus miraculously feeding 5,000 families, then quickly on the heels of that, feeding 4,000 families. He preached and taught throughout Israel for 3 years. He appeared to over 500 people after the resurrection. Yet, when he was crucified and resurrected, there were only 120 faithful. Jesus undoubtedly had personally healed many more than 120 people over the three years of his earthly ministry, and had spo-ken the Word to many thousands more. Those few 120 “religious adherents” may have felt small and insig-nificant in the upper room as they waited for the sign from Jesus to be given. But when the Holy Spirit fell upon them at Pentecost, they preached the gospel and turned 3,000 to the faith in one day. And the Lord daily added to their number. (Acts 1-3)

The Vestry and church members who attended our weekend retreat at the beginning of June are hop-ing to spark a renewal of evangelism and service from Good Shepherd to our community. Beginning with the July 4th fireworks party on our back parking lot, we envision a renewed effort to bring the people in our lives to our Lord and Savior. Will you renew your efforts to preach the Gospel where you are placed? Membership in Good Shepherd is not the goal, although it will undoubtedly be part of the outcome. Can we join with the saints of the ages and spark a renewal that awakens the Concho Valley to the transforming love of Jesus Christ? I believe that answer is: "Yes, with God’s help."

Blessings,

Deacon June

Church Health

Team June 1-3 the Church Health Team and members of the Congregation gathered for a leadership retreat at the Christ the King retreat Center, led by the Rev. Tom Herrick, the director of the Titus Institute for Church Planting in Virginia. During our time together we prayerfully engaged one another and listened for the Holy Spirit’s leading in dis-cerning our Vision, Mission, Core Values and Beliefs as the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd. These are available for your prayerful consideration following this ar-ticle, as well as in the weekly parish bulletin and Service booklet. This is a work in progress, as each of us are! Please pray for each of us to seek, hear, share and follow the Holy Spirit’s leading as we joyfully embrace His Vision and Mission for us in San Angelo.

PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY

Seven Hundred enthusiastic and eager members of the Anglican Church in North America gathered at the Life Way Ridgecrest Conference Center in Black Mountain, NC the week of June 3rd. The

House of Bishops, the Archbishop’s Cabinet, The Provincial Assembly, the Young Anglicans Move-ment and many participants were challenged and equipped with Passionate Bible Study and Wor-

ship, informative workshops and informal conversations with folks from all over North America. Ecu-menical visitors included representatives of the Orthodox Church in North America, The Polish Na-tional Catholic Church, The Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) as well as the Lutheran Church in North America. Each spoke to the Assembly laying out areas where greater unity between our

churches can be accomplished. Various Mission and Ministry agencies were also present, including “Threads of Hope,” which allows women from third world countries to market handmade cloth items

in the United States. The stole that Fr Stan is wearing at Services is an example of their art work. Eileen Burdock is arranging for a showing of items available during Advent of 2012. For more infor-

mation, contact Eileen at (325) 944-9831. Access the various Worship Services, Addresses and Teaching sessions from the Assembly on the web at

www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7435BC22B8CDBCA5 The next Provincial Assembly will be held at St Vincent’s Arch Abbey, Latrobe, PA (near Pittsburgh)

three years from now. Make prayerful plans now to participate with other members of our parish.

We will consecrate a new Arch Bishop during the Assembly.
