DOCUMENTARIES WITH A POINT OF VIEWThe award-winning POV (Point of View) is the longest-running showcase on television to feature the work of America’s best contemporary-issue independent filmmakers.

The City DarkThursday, July 5 at 10pm

Is darkness becoming extinct? When filmmaker Ian Cheney moves from rural Maine to New York City and discovers streets awash in light and skies devoid of stars, he embarks on a journey to America’s brightest and darkest corners, asking astronomers, cancer researchers and ecologists what is lost in the glare of city lights. Get a fascinating introduction to the science of the dark and an exploration of our relationship to the stars in this film that blends a humorous, searching narrative with poetic footage of the night sky.

Guilty PleasuresThursday, July 12 at 10pm

Every four seconds, a romance novel published by Harlequin or its British counterpart, Mills & Boon, is sold somewhere in the world. Take an amusing and touching look at this global phenomenon. Ironies abound in the contrasts between the everyday lives of the books’ readers and the fantasy worlds that offer them escape. Guilty Pleasures portrays five romance devotees who must, ultimately, find their dreams in the real world.

The Light in Her EyesThursday, July 19 at 10pm

Houda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher, founded a Qur’an school for girls in Damascus, Syria, 30 years ago. Every summer, her female students immerse themselves in a rigorous study of Islam. A surprising cultural shift is underway — women are claiming space within the mosque. View an extraordinary portrait, filmed just before the uprising in Syria erupted, of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam without giving up their dreams.

Up Heartbreak HillThursday, July 26 at 10pm

Thomas and Tamara are track stars at their rural New Mexico high school. Like many teenagers, they are torn between the lure of brighter futures elsewhere and the ties that bind them to home. For these teens, however, home is an impoverished town on the Navajo reservation, and leaving means separat-ing from family, tradition and the land that has been theirs for generations. Take a moving look at a new generation of Americans struggling to be both Native and modern.

Fiesta! Thursdays at 8pm

Fiesta! is devoted to the hidden pleasures and magical rhythms of concert music from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. Each hour presents music from the 16th to the 21st centuries, providing a platform for the sound, culture, and history of classical music in Latin America—a genre that does not typically receive much exposure.

The series also offers little-known treasures from the Latin American Baroque era, and celebrates the classical guitar through the music of Agustin Barrios, Antonio Lauro, and Leo Brouwer.

The host is Uruguayan-born composer, musician, performer Elbio Barilari.

Chamber Music from Spoleto Festival USAThursdays at 10pm

Miles Hoffman, music commentator for NPR’s Morning Edition, welcomes you to a new series of chamber music concerts from the Spoleto Festival USA. The series presents world class performances from the intimate setting of the historic Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina.

Tune in each week for the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and others. Geoff Nuttall, Spoleto Festival artistic director, provides lively commentary from the stage.

Each one-hour concert features vibrant young stars, including cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Inon Barnatan, performing with veteran artists such as flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, clarinetist Todd Palmer, pianist Pedja Muzijevic, and the St. Lawrence String Quartet.

The series also features the music of composer-in-residence Osvaldo Golijov, a rare opportunity to hear the music of a living composer interpreted by leading musicians.

Starting on Monday, July 16 at 9pm, treasure hunters embark on an antiques adventure in Market Warriors, a new series from the producers of Antiques Roadshow, the hit PBS series and forerunner of television’s antiques and collectibles genre.

In Market Warriors, four pickers travel to different markets across the country to purchase items with a set amount of money, and use their knowledge and skills to see who can make the most profit at auction. Fred Willard (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind) is Market Warrior’s’ off-screen host, offering wry commentary throughout the show.

Over the course of the season, viewers will get to know the pickers, enjoy an up-close look at the fierce competition in each episode and obstacles they face in the marketplace each week, and make their best guesses about who will come out ahead at the end of each episode.

Meet the Pickers (l to r):

John Bruno is an industry veteran: an antiques and collectibles dealer and collector for 40 years, and an appraiser for more than 25 years. John runs one of the largest antiques show promotion/management organizations in the Northeast.

Miller Gaffney’s eye for antiques and collecting was honed over the years at places such as Sotheby’s Institute of Art. She is a licensed appraiser and the proprietor of an art advisory service that she founded in 2006.

Bob Richter is a lifelong collector with the sensibility of an interior designer. Bob lives in New York City, where he is a regular at local flea markets and furniture shops.

Kevin Bruneau has owned and operated an antiques business for more than two decades and is fluent in the world of buying and selling antiques and collectibles in the online marketplace.
