New stagings from the MetGreat Performances at the Met offers two extraordinary operas in July.

Tune in Sunday, July 14, at 1:30 p.m. (CT)

as David McVicar directs the first-ever Met production of Donizetti’s intensely dramatic historical opera Maria Stuarda, with Joyce DiDonato as Mary, Queen of Scots, and South African soprano Elza van den Heever making her Met debut as Mary’s rival, the formidable Queen Elizabeth I.

Then, tune in as star tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role in a new production of Wagner’s final masterpiece, Parsifal, staged by acclaimed French Canadian director François Girard in his Met debut, on Sunday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. (CT). The cast of Wagnerians assembled for this meditative opera includes German bass René Pape as the wise knight Gurnemanz, Swedish soprano Katarina Dalayman as the wayward temptress Kundry, Swedish baritone Peter Mattei as the wounded king Amfortas, and Russian bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin as the evil wizard Klingsor.

Radio Features

Summer SeriesPublic radio is dishing up platefuls of series specials this summer! Hear the specials during

Morning Edition and All Things Considered, or search NPR.org for the stories, transcripts, and supplemental content. The Nickel Tour SeriesAs families load up the car for the annual road trip this summer, Morning Edition’s Nickel Tour series features some of the most engaging tour guides from around the country—rangers, docents, tram drivers, and other guides who make historical sites, natural wonders, and tourist destinations come alive. The series launches in July.

Global GrillAll Things Considered is exploring the culture of grilling. We’ll have a burger, but what do they throw over the open flame on hot days in Mexico City, Mumbai, or Berlin? The Global Grill features audio postcards from the foreign desk and chats with chefs and food writers.

Crime In The City 2013Morning Edition and NPR Books partner on this series about crime novelists

and the cities from around the globe that inspire them. For the first time in the series’ seven-year run, cities in Africa, South America, and South Asia are featured. The action runs through Labor Day.

Kids Culture SeriesChildren are huge consumers of culture, gobbling up television shows, books, games, apps, and movies for hours every day. NPR’s Arts Desk puts a new critical focus on media for children with a series that takes children and the ideas they encounter seriously. Look for stories on the dominance of PG-rated movies, video games, licensing tie-ins for kids’ movies, and Matchbox cars.

Library Series The NPR Library Series explores our collective copyright nightmare, how content can be consumed and distributed electronically, the digital divide, funding challenges, historic preservation—and it reflects that sense of discovery and the pleasure you get from a great public library. The pieces air in August.

ComebacksNPR’s National Desk takes a look at comeback stories—from pop culture, politics, business, sports, fashions, and fads—in a series beginning July 15. Stories examine the comebacks of Yellowstone’s grey wolves, the French luxury brand Moynat, New York distilleries, and much more.

The TechnopolisThe 21st Century has been called “the urban century,” and the NPR Cities Project is responding by examining current urban trends and future challenges. As city and suburban populations burgeon worldwide, how do we want to live and what do we want our cities to be? In July, hear about vertical farming (growing crops inside a city building?!) and garbage dumps (or the absence of).

July Television Highlights

Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, a two-part documentary from Ken Burns, tells the remarkable story of the entire corps—including the young army men, French-Canadian boatmen, Clark’s African-American slave, and the Shoshone woman, Sakakawea, who brought along her infant son. Hal Holbrook narrates. July 9 & 16, 7:00 p.m. (CT)

Althorp, childhood home and final resting place of Princess Diana, is currently the home of Diana’s brother, Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer. Generations of Spencers have presided over this grand estate, and their dynasty has produced politicians, military heroes, dukes, and duchesses—and the future king of Britain: Diana’s son, Prince William. Come along with us on a tour of this noble manor with Secrets of Althorp. New! Monday, July 8, 9:00 p.m. (CT)

During Steven Caras’ 14-year stint dancing with the New York City Ballet, George Balanchine took note of his gift as a photographer and gave him access to photograph the ballet’s private world. Steven Caras: See Them Dance presents rare photographs of such ballet superstars

as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Suzanne Farrell, Rudolf Nureyev, and Natalia Makarova. New! Wednesday, July 31, 8:00 p.m. (CT)

The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a man who, in a world of unavoidable

pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. The Buddha, a documentary by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin, tells the story of his life, a journey relevant in our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion. Tuesday, July 23, 7:00 p.m. (CT)

In 1982, Judge Bruce Van Sickle issued a series of orders that changed how North Dakota cares for its citizens with developmental disabilities. Thirty years later, Prairie Public is reviewing

the historical context and investigating the outcome of that reformation with I Am a Person. Wednesday, July 17, 8:00 p.m. (CT)

Board of Directors to meetThe Prairie Public Broadcasting Board of Directors will meet Friday, July 26, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at The Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. All board meetings are open to Prairie Public members and to the public. For more information, contact Kirstin Lindbery at 800-359-6900.

Looking to the futureThose who have enjoyed supporting Prairie Public over the years are often

surprised to learn of the many ways they can continue that support in the future.

Start with your will. An up-to-date will can serve as the foundation of a sound estate plan, directing how you would like your property distributed when you no longer need it. Many choose to make provisions in their will for nonprofit organizations, such as Prairie Public Broadcasting.

Life insurance may not normally be top of mind when considering charitable gifts, but it can be an easy gift to make. Perhaps you purchased a policy to protect a loved one or a business interest and you no longer need it for that purpose. Such policies can make welcome charitable gifts.

Because retirement plan assets can be subject to substantial taxes when received by heirs, it may be best to make charitable gifts from these accounts and provide for heirs using other less heavily taxed assets. If you are age 70½ or older, you may contribute directly from your IRA to Prairie Public by using your mandatory IRA withdrawal (up to $100,000 per year), completely free of federal income tax. This opportunity is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2013, unless Congress acts to extend it.

To learn more, or to request our free booklet, “Your Guide to Effective Giving in 2013,” contact Ann Clark, director of development, at 800-359-6900, ext. 510, or at [email protected].

Bridge The Gap To Pine RidgeTwenty-five-year-old Brooklynite Chris

Bashinelli of “The Sopranos” fame brings a new meaning to the term “cultural exchange” in his new documentary

Bridge The Gap To Pine Ridge, airing Friday, July 19, at 9:30 p.m. (CT).

Over the course of two eventful weeks, Bashinelli gets a taste of what it means to be

a modern-day Oglala Lakota Indian on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

In the film, Bashinelli is honored to participate in a sacred buffalo harvest and

joins in on the celebration that ends in a big bite of raw liver. But that’s not all. He takes part in hard-labor farm work in

order to better understand employment, is “schooled” by the women’s basketball team

at the Pine Ridge’s Community College, and visits with a 14-year-old girl who has

devoted her life to suicide prevention.

By walking in local residents’ shoes, Bashinelli hopes to bridge the gap between

viewers and the lives of the people on Pine Ridge—their daily struggles, their

successes, their culture, and their dreams. Touching talks and classroom visits

with school-aged youth uncover stories of hope, and Bashinelli learns how culture

through the generations has prevailed in the face of adversity.
